    The amount of time we spent on that merry-go-round in the Summers of the early 80s, not to mention the giant blue slide and the monkey bars. Something happened between the mid 80s and the early 90s and after that there were no more children playing in the parks. The estate turned into a filthy crumbling nightmare landscape. And the misery spread too. Right across to Abbey Wood (which used to be a beautiful little place) up Knee Hill towards Welling and now as far as Sidcup. Crime, vandalism, out of control children, complete lack of parental control and no real community to speak of anymore. RIP Thamesmead, the rats in the newly built shoebox flats have you now.

    When these estates were being built , they were very ideal. Old slums house were torn deemed unfit and out of date. Lack of maintenance , clean up , and repair have made these estates unfit. The architecture is not faulty , its the people who live there and vandalise it. They do graffiti , piss on walkways and lift, muggings, drugs etc. Look at Beckton estate in docklands, its no different, same problem. These estates were built with a great vision, but dirty politics and lack funding let it go into disrepair. People of criminal backgrounds ruined a perfectly good estate. What are we gonna do next? Tear down Barbican complex, just because its made of concrete. Don't rip apart, fix the problem.

      Yeah Mohammed fam you are 100% spot-on. I lament the demise of these interesting bits of architecture. They speak of an era of hope that turned ultimately to be an era of despair. Allahu akhbar.

    Private developers are moving in alright. Peabody housing action association have got ther hand on the entire estate and are pulling down buildings that they cannot sell to their yuppie friends from the city and doing up the rest to sell to them. Crossrail is going to make Thamesmead a des res OK.

    • @Sabotaz80xx
      @Sabotaz80xx ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tall residential buildings that are privately owned and rented by professionals and working families usually tend to work well, it’s when they are used to house the poorest in society that it begins to go disastrously wrong. Housing single parents families with numerous kids in an overcrowded flat with drug addicts in the same building etc is of course not going to work and lead to endless social problems

    Social housing disaster. Contractors made loads of money and the whole thing was a complete disaster. Once again... all about financial gain, backhanders and profits for the rich.

    Those old GLC architects really didn’t like colour did they? Building on a flood plain wasn’t a great idea either and all the ‘developers’ heading down that way now (again) know this.
