This is by far one of the most practical knife fight instructions I've ever seen. The question is: what if the attacker is a highly trained fencer with hand-to-hand combat (but not specifically knife fighting) skills as well? It seems like the ultimate physical ability of the fighter is still the key determinant of the outcome.
@@razorsharplifestyle101hard9 If the attack comes as surprise attack, for sure! Fighting skills matters the most when both parties know that the attack begins.

Thats a young James Williams I think and He is legit regardless of what people say, and if not good for him cause he made it a serious career. His CRKT knives are serious value for the price point!!
I love the relaxed manner involved in this system. I am an Eskrimador, and watch all manner of videos on blade combat. A lot of the concepts taught herein come Pencak Silat and Eskrima.
Obviously this will piss some people off, but SOME of these techniques -note that I didn't say 'all'- are bullshit, and would not hold up to pressure testing. Choreography, compliant partners, flashy/excessive techniques, and demonstrations with convenient, if not miraculously perfect conditions, are not realistic. Captain Confucius talking about harmony and peace, probably has never had to deal with a serious altercation, especially trying to negotiate the business end of a knife.
In training you start/stop the flowing movement so that it can be studied by the training partners and by anyone watching the training session, in the real deal you must keep in the flow without any need to break the flow. Everyone is a f*cking expert! ... Take whatever makes sense to you and leave whatever doesn't suit your style. Simple!
its a practical video. remember hes training men who need to fight. cant just run from the knife attack. because in everyday life , do NOT be a hero if you have no one around you to protect, such as your kids, wife, family. you RUN!! with knives you WILL get cut. this instructor doesn't ever give the attacker his hands or feet. its a practical way to defend yourself, giving you what you need to know to try and not be cut or to be cut in the most non fatal way possible. but you seem to be a sheep. sorry man
Loved the first part with the swat team with the flashlight and shotguns trained on the man, he then attacks as the guy with the shotgun just stands there staring at him.
It happens that way in real life, the oh crap moment that delays your reaction. The team member hadn’t even processed they were being attacked and not doing the attacking
Basically you wait for them to be committed to their attack, then react. It is extremely hard to do but more effective than anything. It only takes practice, practice, practice. Unarmed against a weapon there is no other way! A tip I have taught myself after years and years of martial arts is if you are out in public and have the opportunity, pick a large man from the crowd and use you imagination on him. Pretend he is attacking you and imagine what you would do. Try to feel it inside! The more you can make yourself believe it is real the better it works. Try to feel how much he weighs and how much you weigh. Try to feel his strength against your technique. This can be very effective in the real world if done properly! It is not quite as good as actual hand to hand but that is not always possible and there are no limitations inside your head! it also helps keep you sharp between training classes. I swear on my life that, just yesterday, I was confronted by two patched bikers. They where apparently offended that I was not showing them enough respect and started to discreetly harass me. When the leader said "blah blah, this guy" (I didn't hear the first part) as I walked by him I turned to him eye to eye about two feet away) and said "WHAT!"1 He said, sheepishly; "noth'in, do you work here?". I don't know why he said "do you work here" but he didn't say anything aggressive two feet away in my face! I was prepared to defend my honor and they knew it! They backed down. If they hadn't I would have put up the best fight I could! This wasn't necessarily a very smart move but that is just me. I discourage you from these actions.
Exactly,It ain't worth it though.Dont let ego get the best of you.It don't take much to bleed fatally from just one knife strike.Plus you don't know who is carrying a machete or what about jail time.20 feet away is a safe distance.2 feet you pushing it.
It takes a minimum of five years to learn to feel the adversary's intention to move and direction. The video is spot on, but the intricacy of the concept and skill required is beyond what a short course can convey.
Yeah the hand to hand video is great to , moving in a linear way , cam instead of block and etc , brilliant , makes sense movement or constant movement in defense like what Steven Seagal teaches or taught in his school had said about Aikido
As someone who is trained in knife combatives..... Yeah, 6 minutes into this, and there was no doubt I was watching traditional martial arts mysticism B.S.
NGMonocrom it's derived from kali, and it's completely situational. There is no real way to defend against a knife attack so you rely on instinct and two basic formats inner/outer.
Justin Reyes No way?? Use situational awareness to keep overs from getting intimate with you (closing the range), get off the center line by changing direction, and if you fail to do that; pivot away from your attacker and go for his back before he gets to lash out to the rear with his knife. If that fails, use snap palm heel strikes to deflect any stabs. There's also the less glamourous tactic of temporarily disengaging and putting obstacles between you and the attacker. And I'm sorry, but these are all basic techniques and tactics that any good teacher, especially one grounded in Kali, should be able to teach and demonstrate. If they can't.... time to look for a new teacher who actually knows what he's doing.
Justin Reyes There is a way to defend against knife attacks. That defending may get you cut it may not but it could save your life in a life threatening situation. And it's simple, practice techniques, repetition, repetition, repetition. Just like you learn to kick and punch. Just like you learn to grapple, just like you learn joint manipulation. Thats ALL you can train for (unless you get someone tpo actually come and try and stab you in training) What techniques do you trust and learn? Knife attacks that are aimed at really maiming or killing are up close, unseen and/or very quick and violent. If you find yourself unarmed and dancing about with an a person with a knife, the chances of them wanting to actually seriously hurt or kill you is low. In either case, as was demonstrated in this video, try and get that knife hand and bloody keep it. And even struggling with someone with a knife can end up with a nasty cut. With you not knowing about it. Palming the knife hand out of the way is also a very effective way if defending against stabs, and general distance keeping, you can set up for a grab with the opposite hand, attempt a restraint, break and disarm. This video is a very good video. It doesn't go into other techniques and philosophies but what it does go into it does well.
it took you 6 minutes? dude the example they showed with the door and the soldiers trying to breach was hilarious. like they wouldn't know the deal by the time the 2nd guy got stabbed. like it'll only take one stab to kill the guys. people call my knife fighting bull shit, but damn this was ridiculous. although some of it is alright.
The first guy isnt that bad, but a little weird with his esoteric talk. The second guy however is just straight forward the real deal. Thanks for sharing that gem.
I called BS when I saw the first guy. But the second knows a lot, you can see lots of Filipino martial arts elements, very practical application, is awesome
I fail to see why some folks are critical of this video. It seems to be a thoughtful and serious treatment of the subject. Sure some new ideas may have emerged in recent years or some training methods may have changed, but clearly the makers have considered the dynamic nature of human conflict. To quote Yamamoto Tsunetomo: The man who has faced death at the point of a sword, has an elevated view of the subject"

I live in a fairly rough area and although I carry a Ka-Bar 1211 fighting/utility knife, I'm not a violent person at all. Many people here carry all types of knives so I train daily so that I know how to use my knife to the best of my ability. Anyone can carry a knife, not many people know how to use it. Knife laws here in Canada is stupid, criminals carry them anyway, do you think the law is going to stop that? Prisons are not filled with God-fearing boy scouts. That said, I would rather carry my Ka-Bar, a fixed blade knife and defend myself, than to be another statistic or "victim" of crime. Sorry but I got a family to support, criminals don't give a damn about that. I love these videos and I'm always learning a thing or two in each one I watch.
Great respect to our SpecOps community and we thank them for their service and we are forever grateful. This is just my opinion but, I think Mr. Williams is the last person should be teaching the Navy Seals. He is a good martial ARTIST but I cannot trust my life from a person who never seen or experienced real combat. I know James served in the military but I also know he did not experienced combat. One of his student got hurt real bad using his techniques and that speaks volumes.
It all depends who using them it can be a perfect system but if the person using it don’t use the techniques right it can make the system look like it don’t work but in actuality it’s the person using it wrong
They always do this in slow motion where the defender has all the advantage. The attacker does one attack and then leaves the defender to do his defense and multiple attacks. It doesn't work like that in real life. A knife attack is similar to a fist attack; multiple knife stabs will come and it not easy to grab someone's arm when they are swinging. I've seen many Vadim Starov videos where he does incredible during training then he doesn't look so cool in an actual fight. Also check out 6 martial artist against a knife fighter. These martial artist are social media influencers that do some knife defense videos; Then they get stabbed to death in a proper knife defense sparring match. In the end it is possible to defend against a knife; but the better warrior wins. Granted the knife fighter gets a big edge. If you watch animals fight each other; they all have weapons. Example a cat vs a black mamba. The cat uses insane agility to avoid all strikes from the snake and then lands its killer blow.
Everyone needs to realize, this is a training video for civilians. Even thought a couple of the guys on here were SEALS, This is not what the SEALS are training in...
Damian Blue I've trained with the guys on here...about the time it was filmed. It's not bad tactics...just not the details that the SEALS were/are getting. Keep in mind, the SEALS operate in complete secrecy, and are never allowed to show their training publicly. Even after they retire out of the unit. Even though I trained with some of these guys, I never got the exact same training they did. May have been the same principles or techniques, but not the same level of stress inoculation, or detail. In other words, I am not claiming to be a super, ninja, SEAL trained operator, just because I met, and trained with, these guys. I just know what they told me, themselves, about the difference in public training and unit training. NOTHING you see advertised as "used by the U.S. Navy SEALS" was ever used the way it was advertised. If it is, it will be shut down by the DoD and DoJ in a heartbeat...lol BUT... what they show you, personally, in private is another story... ;-)
These are old techniques...Like everything else it evolves and becomes better. As an example: Before the UFC the conventional thinking was that if you had earned a black belt in any striking discipline that was enough to defend yourself, and most of the time, it was. As long as you didn't get attacked by a grappler.
I get what you're saying. Though my (as a striker, primarily) my ego wants to scream "Hey I've taken my share of grapplers in my day!" (of course I've gotten my ass handed to me by grapplers, too, but it has been a fairly even back-n-forth as long as we are on the same skill level and both at the top of our game, etc.) But yeah, your point is well-received ;) -A boxer and Krav Maga practitioner
It is totally unrealistic. Risking your hands is way better than risking your torso and internal organs. In a realistic knife fight, you should not grab or be grabbed by your opponent unless you know what your doing. I guess even people who are professional fighters will not dear grabbing an armed offender. Pay attention that the soldiers who are attacking the instructors in the video are leading with knife hand, which is not the case if you are faced with an experienced fighter. Experienced fighters always lead with the empty hand and keep their knife hand retracted. These instructions may be applicable to a military context, but I am dead sure that these thing are not going to happen in an street fight. Street fights are ultra chaotic and it is 'ruthless determination' that wins.
its a practical video. remember hes training men who need to fight. cant just run from the knife attack. because in everyday life , do NOT be a hero if you have no one around you to protect, such as your kids, wife, family. you RUN!! with knives you WILL get cut. this instructor doesn't ever give the attacker his hands or feet. its a practical way to defend yourself.
If you run, you die tired. Turning your back on an armed attacker is a death sentence…by the time your realize a knife has been pulled, it most likely exiting your flesh. Until the guy was using to intimidate more than use so he shows it
I've been in Judo, Jujitsu and Kempo with rank in all, studied several other diciplines, and worked a lot with rubber knives with lipstick on them wearing t shirts. I hate to say it, but if someone is determined to kill you with a knife, luck is going to play a huge part of whether you will defend yourself adequately. You probably will die if he's good or crazy determined and has any speed at all. Try to kill him even if he stabs you, try to stop or slow him down so the next victim has a better chance, if you have skill. I have been studying knives a lot since breaking my back, and i have come to the conclusion that this ancient weapon is so efficient and deadly that I teach people to run like hell. If you cant, and if you have a gun, don't move straight backwards to avoid the attack, he will get you, move at an angle back while you draw or roll backwards to the ground while drawing your gun to take your vitals out of the way for enough time to draw. Knives are deadly.
Roger Williams You got it man. Knives are deadly. We teach knife defence in our art but the first piece of advice we give those that train it is, run. If you are not 100 percent confident, and there are other options, run. It doesnt make you a coward, it makes you smart, and safe. Knife defence is an end of options option, (and is benificial for certain trades) you can get as good as you can with it in a learning environment but reality can have different ideas. The problem is you can't train knife defence the way you can punching and kicking (for obvious reasons). But what you can do is teach, in principle - reality, then technique, and practice that technique as much as you can the same as kicking and punching. Except hope you never have to test it.
Yeah, there needs to be a lot of luck. Which means that there is some kind of chance - and that's why you train, to improve those chances by a few percents atleast.
As a marine corps veteran, I didn't learn this type of technique. I did learn some knife techniques as well as other stuff. I want an infantryman, so I guess it wasn't that imperative that I learn advanced techniques. This video may be old, but it's still effective, and I approve of this video. Oooorah! 🫡 Thanks for sharing.
The difference between navy seal or any other elite military organization and civilians is that they carry firearms, and if they are using a knife to take out a threat it's not going to be in a defensive manner it's going to be an offensive attack and all they really need to know is where to cut and how to cut and how to do it quietly. If you're watching these videos for self-defense you're wasting your time. In the real world, there is no real knife "self-defense" knives are offensive weapons and if you are attacked with a knife chances are you will be cut before you ever see the threat, knife defense is more about threat management and reducing your injuries by preventing further injury by either eliminating the threat or getting away to safety before you go into shock.
I would not say its a waste of time, if you believe that you are dead. You have the cards stacked against you, but you can still walk away. I have done three times, two times with cuts and hospital visits. Two times I was cut before I saw it, I used Aikido tactics, and police Academy tactics and lived. the reality for most people watching, your attacker knifes you to rob you, and intimidate you so you do not fight back and beat the shit out of them, or run. Its designed to get access to you money.
For some information, check out the wound patterns on skeletons of those who fought and died by bladed weapons,eg, the Battle of Visby skeletons, many of those were slashed to to the upper legs and bled out , they had insuffiscent protection on the lower parts of their bodies, so all this movie kind of sword/knife fight is proberbly wrong. check it on Wiki.
Yeah, as someone trained in knife combatives, 6 minutes into this.... and there was no doubt that what I was watching was traditional martial arts mysticism B.S.
Interesting thing, I was walking around in the suburb in a neighbourhood known for segregation and criminal activity (in Sweden), and a couple of guys in their 20s were practising a technique that actually worked as a feint to the Krav Maga blocking technique (low 360 block) with a follow up stab to face when the person is bent over. These guys were not martial artists and have probably not even heard of Krav Maga, but probably had some degree of criminal involvement (gangs). I love Krav Maga just interesting how reality leads to creativity.
Before even watching the video I reacted to the gi he is wearing. Screams traditional-martial-arts-won't-work to me. And also no shoes. Guess this was the 80s or 90s huh? What do you think?
This is true. You cannot fight in a robe whilst barefoot. If an attacker breaks into your house and you don't have time to put on your tacticool gear then you might as well just give up.
It was a informative video but once again they complicated things for one it's a demo where the trainer knows the move about to be made in real life you don't get that advantage also knife fighting needs to be simple your not going to remember all that in actual combat when all your fine motor skills just went flying out of the window because they will that's why William Fairbairn trained soldiers n commandos gutterfighting it took about 45minutes and then an additional few days of practices and it was uncomplicated so the guy's were able n retain what they had been taught in actual combat because it was so simple that it became capable to perform during stressful hand to hand combat because it was instinctive because of it's simplicity.
I would also like to know. Would you please say what is ineffective? I hope the day never comes, but if it does, I would like the best chances of survival during conflict.

I believe the knife is underrated. People forget that its its a Silent killer, Reliable, And like the soldier said in a situation where you have to abort it will help you survive out there. No batteries needed lol.
Exactly, Conditioning yourself with deadly knife striking is useful for self defense situations. And a combat mentality instead of spending 20k rolling on a mat somewhere for an advanced belt in the popular jujitsu art and endup with a dojo mentality.
The first instructor is James Williams and he is a Nami-Ryu Koryu Kobujutsu Japanese Samurai practitioner🙏🏼
Holly Hell. Nasty. It seems that speed even more than precise technique is the factor. Great video.
Leslie Porter The better your technique, the faster you can be
Obviously this will piss some people off, but SOME of these techniques -note that I didn't say 'all'- are bullshit, and would not hold up to pressure testing.
I have a good KDA on COD, so I know these knife tactics are over complicated and don't work. All he needed to do was click on the mouse. What a moron.
In training you start/stop the flowing movement so that it can be studied by the training partners and by anyone watching the training session, in the real deal you must keep in the flow without any need to break the flow.

its a practical video. remember hes training men who need to fight. cant just run from the knife attack. because in everyday life , do NOT be a hero if you have no one around you to protect, such as your kids, wife, family. you RUN!! with knives you WILL get cut. this instructor doesn't ever give the attacker his hands or feet. its a practical way to defend yourself, giving you what you need to know to try and not be cut or to be cut in the most non fatal way possible. but you seem to be a sheep. sorry man
DarthTwilight stop ylkin Shit and try to attack him... Go find him and attack him then u can say that but he could be a seal and u would never know
Loved the first part with the swat team with the flashlight and shotguns trained on the man, he then attacks as the guy with the shotgun just stands there staring at him.
At that range, the pattern would be tight enough to effectively end the attack without collateral damage.
Fantastic. Great to see Mr Williams at work.
Fedez
NGMonocrom it's derived from kali, and it's completely situational. There is no real way to defend against a knife attack so you rely on instinct and two basic formats inner/outer.
Justin Reyes
No way??
These guys are the real deal.
The knife is the scariest weapon. This is a good reality check for anyone who's seen to many Hollywood trash movie's.

Exactly, not that rolling around in the ground self destructive jujitsu training.
I love these videos and I'm always learning a thing or two in each one I watch.
very real and excellent instruction for the serious.
Thanks for this video it's life defending and saving information God bless 🇺🇸🙏🏻😇

Thank you for sharing this!!! GO NAVY!
Fast backfists with knife in hand....very dangerous.
I always bring my gun to a knife fight.
Uncle Rico, Grandma says that you need to leave!
This video makes me laugh just because it's so old
Everyone needs to realize, this is a training video for civilians. Even thought a couple of the guys on here were SEALS, This is not what the SEALS are training in...
+sniper244 how do you know
Damian Blue I've trained with the guys on here...about the time it was filmed. If it is, it will be shut down by the DoD and DoJ in a heartbeat...lol BUT... what they show you, personally, in private is another story... ;-)
+sniper244 Sure ya did buddy
+sniper244 scars.com/about
School of Awesome Well...they had me till the "all human combat has constants" line...
Though my (as a striker, primarily) my ego wants to scream "Hey I've taken my share of grapplers in my day!" (of course I've gotten my ass handed to me by grapplers, too, but it has been a fairly even back-n-forth as long as we are on the same skill level and both at the top of our game, etc.)
But yeah, your point is well-received ;)

By the music, these sound like old video from the 90's posted only for our enjoyment.
So many people talking shit about these instructors , I'd pay money to see any shit talkers take on any of the instructors LOL

If you run, you die tired. Turning your back on an armed attacker is a death sentence…by the time your realize a knife has been pulled, it most likely exiting your flesh. Until the guy was using to intimidate more than use so he shows it
the instructor looks a lot like Stephen K. Hayes....

Thanks for the video!
Props to that assistant

As a marine corps veteran, I didn't learn this type of technique. I did learn some knife techniques as well as other stuff. I want an infantryman, so I guess it wasn't that imperative that I learn advanced techniques. This video may be old, but it's still effective, and I approve of this video. Oooorah! 🫡
Thanks for sharing.
I'm a Barney Fife of stealth fighting lol
Charles Howard Yes .
Exactly, because if he gives you a hard feint and you fall for it. Things are going to get really bad really quick.
Holy shit, that's James Williams! Cool
The Benchmade folder he's showing off is a Tsunami but the photo knife is a 970s Benchmade Emerson. The Tsunami is a fairly rare model.

This is why most special forces groups use Krav Maga or at the least have some Krav techniques added to their training.

Pretty boys in slow motion .
This shit it terrifying.

There's a lot of BS in here, but at the same time its still relevant knowledge to know.
Peaches want to further elaborate? I mean the video is an hour long. Your statement is kind of redundant
I would also like to know. Would you please say what is ineffective? I hope the day never comes, but if it does, I would like the best chances of survival during conflict.
iwaswronguwasright lol it’s been four years since I wrote that comment. I’d have to rewatch the video and talk about it point by point. Instead just trust me when I say that if you fight with a knife, you’re going to get cut, just try to kill the other guy first.
Ok. Thank u. I totally understand chances are super slim of coming out unscathed. I was thinking of maybe getting those cut and stab proof shirts. Are they effective?
@@iwaswronguwasright To a point, Im sure. You'll still feel any stabs though, they'd be more than enough to debilitate you. So maybe you wont die, but you better finish the fight fast.
