  • In this video, I'll show you how to open up the steering box. How to get the bearings out, inspect the races and replace what is necessary.

Some of the problems encountered with the steering box is the use of the wrong viscosity grease/oil. It is difficult to properly fill the box with grease from the fill point and oil is too loose and leaks. With the thick grease, it is forced to the sides and does not lubricate as it should. I can't remember the name of the product that comes in a squeeze tube, but there is a thread on Chevytalk that addresses this issue. Thanks for sharing your build.

@@jdinman6263 I'm waiting on the master cylinder install. Waiting to see how that universal mount works. I'll keep watching for sure. I'm kinda going the same way with my 53 4 door 210.

There are not enough videos on the '53-'54s, thanks for this! My 54 when I get to turning right it has a spot where it binds some. Now that I have seen the innards I may try to remedy that this winter. Any thoughts about the likely cause? How difficult are these to remove from a complete car? (SBC) How many of these boxes have you worked on? How much was the worm gear, and where did you find it? Thanks for the info!

Did you ever find a contact for a replacement worm gear?

No... I sold the 53 to a buddy of mine. He's going to do a chop top project out of it... I really just wanted to document the tear down procedure and how to get started on a build like this... Everybody wants them finished their own way and there's plenty of shows and videos already about that part. Thanks for watching.

Thanks, your video is very helpful, just a question: is it possible to replace the bearing in the part from minute 5:03 ?

Yes all of the bearings are replaceable I believe. The thing you cant replace is the steering gear. It is made into the shaft of the steering rod...

New to your channel lots of great information, I saw your finished Chevy on one of the groups on Facebook this week. You were featuring the grill, what a great idea, are going to show us how you put the grill together on one of your videos? Would you be able to put one together for sale? Thank you for your time, keep the great videos coming.

So if you get in an accident that steering shaft will probably hit your chest. I think im investing in harness seat belts.

I did shoulder strap seat belts in the front and back seats of my Bel Air... I should do a video on that!!!
