Luka is also way more skilled than Duncan or Shaq. That doesn't mean anything. He will surpass Dirk, but Dirk was crazy in his prime. One of the most underapreciated superstars ever. Easily Top 20 All-Time. Dirk got passed Kobe, Gasol, Durant, Westbrook, Harden, LeBron, Wade and Bosh in 11 without another All-Star.

Skill wise there's no question Luka is way better than Dirk and that's coming from a long time Mavs fan. Luka's trajectory at minimum will be top 15 player of all time. But as of now Dirk is still the greatest Maverick of all time because of that goated 2011 championship run.
....and because of the 05"-06" Finals appearance, 1 Finals MVP, 1 league MVP, Number 6 on the All Time Scoring list and being the best 7ft shooter of All Time. (KD & Bird are not listed at 7ft by the way).

I’m a home town Mavs fan. This guy Luka does everything better then Dirk. I mean EVERYTHING!!!! He scores more, he assists more, he rebounds more, he controls the pace of the game. It’s not even close. Championships is a team accolade, individually, it’s not even close.
I think the argument is that if you're that good you'll make your team win, Dirk did it with a respectable but not a very talented team, so I'd still side with Dirk

In terms of talent, I think Luka has surpassed Dirk. However, in the Hearts of the fans, Dirk will be number 1.
He is the definition of humility and loyalty, stuck around 21 years, and put the franchise on the map while also having revolutionized the game with his style of play and won them their first and only championship.
It's going to be hard for Luka to overcome Dirk in Dallas.

Thing is, the Others have been amazing, Luka can't be stopped, Kyrie is pacing himself to show up when needed, the Centers are tremendous and prob the best center duo in the league. The 3pt shooting have been below average, but when they do hit shots, games like against the Rockets or Sac happen, if they don't, they still grind the wins out.
The win against Denver was them having a terrible shooting night, Denver was also shooting badly but that's because they have size to bother Jokic and Murray now.
Pj and gafford will be important in the playoff, a lot of lob and assist will be coming for those two from luka and kyrie
Livley aswell need to make sure that trio is healthy because the back up for them is grim

Old heads don't like it when a younger player is praised for being better than the old players. I don't know why, but it seems like if they agree to those types of questions. Dirk is the best, but luka is the more well-rounded. Obviously, Luka is more skilled in just about every way besides pure shooting, but Dirk had longevity, plus he revolutionized the game. He also led dallas to its first ever chip while having 10+ 50 win seasons in a brutal western conference that featered duncans spurs, kobes Lakers teams, the 2 second suns with nash, webber and the kings, garnett and the wolves. Another thing that gets overlooked is how clutch/efficient dirk was in the clutch. Especially the playoffs. Luka will probably go down as the better player, but without Dirk, there would be no Luka so let's appreciate the greatness that basketball fans have had a chance to witness on a nightly basis for decades past and decades to come!

People from later generations will always have prospects that are better than the previous generations. It's just the natural flow of things. A lot of players today grew up watching guys like Dirk, Kobe, Shaq, Nash, Lebron, Wade, Etc... they patterned their games to their idols and obviously that will produce an abundance of skilled players.
That being said, at this stage of his career, Luka is on pace to edge out Dirk as the best player in a Mavs uniform IF

I think Shaq has a point. Luka may be better than Dirk, but he’s not greater than him yet. There’s a difference. Greatness is about more than skill, and Dirk’s 2011 playoff run is the greatest of all time in my opinion. I do think, though, that Luka will probably surpass Dirk.
