Thai and Cambodian troops clashed for a fourth day Monday over a disputed border area surrounding a 900-year-old Khmer temple, which both sides claim as their own. Thai nationalists are calling on their government to "reclaim" the area.

That news is old. They went to international court twice. The ICJ already ruled the temple belongs to Cambodia and Unesco already approved it as a heritage site. It was Thai nationalist movement that tried to block Unesco proposal that led up to the war.

And last time I checked, it is one of the fastest growing economy in SE asia with mega development projects underway, and there is stock exchange in Cambodia....goes to show how much you know...

@beshnola Yes, your language is from the Tai group but the vocabulary such as royal language, names of some foods and other technical terms were from Khmer. Try to learn both languages and make connection. You can't just denied without knowing anything about Khmer language.

@keeyk118b I didn't say all Thais, of course some Thais were from China, many were recent immigrants, maybe the last one or two hundred years. They have fully assimilated into the Thai society. So imagine Khmers living in today's Thailand in the prior to the Ayudthya period, of course they had assimilated and became part of Thais society along time ago.

Nationalism to a state is GREAT! It creates identity, but in this case it also create conflicts of interest. As long as neighboring countries of ASEAN keep fighting among themselves like this, they will never compete with the USA, European Unions, China, and Japan. Being Thai, Khmer, Viet, Myanmar, Malaysian, Indonesian, Singapore, Brunei and Laotian are great, but what's best is being ASEAN united.
@SAFC442 its so sad that this is happening over a temple. It's even worse that the temple was damaged in the last bout of fighting. Irregardless of a common religion and blood relations between people in both countries, nationalism sparked this latest round of fighting, which in turn was sparked by the sentencing of Thai protesters for espionage in Cambodia. The U.N. needs to come in to establish a peace keeping force before this escalates into a war.

@beshnola Did you know that the first king of Laos, Fa Ngam was the adopted by Khmer king? He was was raised at Angkor and married to one of the Khmer princesses. Later the Khmer king sent Fa Ngam and the princess to fight and created Laos kingdom. Khmer king also sent dancers, musicians, servants, priests and thousands of Khmer troops to accompany the couple. Many Thais and Laos today have Khmer blood especially the ones that have darker skin.

Thais think highly of themselves and look down on their neighbors. When in reality Siam gained so much from Cambodia in the past including, culture,territory, people, language,foods,and royal customs. Many of Siamese ancestors were Khmers broke off from the Khmer empire. Central Thais and people in provinces along Khmer border are khmer.

Why is there a conflict here. Neither country is now Hindu albeit there are small numbers of Hindus in thailand. Yet they are not asking for it, the temple is a ruin, but it is also a Khymer ruin is it not?

You can see Khmer ruines all over Thailand today, Siam adopted Khmer culture, language, foods, and royal costumes since Ayudhya periods. There were Khmer native people that lost their native language and had fully assimilated into Thai society. Khmer empire started Southeast Asia in the 1st century AD. Where was Thailand?

Over the French's rule, the Southeast region was known as French Indochina. Cambodia had the largest region; thus a great source of income. The French played nice and split the land somewhat equally. This is what it looks like today. During Khmer's great civilization many centuries ago, they were the most strongest and greatest civilization in that region. They fought off many Thais and Vietnams. They created amazing monuments like the Angkor Wat. I don't see where those Thai got the (nonsense)
I know this is 12 years later but this is simply not true, before french Indochina (which lasted over 90 years) there was the kingdom of Siam which became smaller, smaller and smaller until they eventually lost south Vietnam, laos, Cambodia and south Burma the Khmer empire may of built it but they are nothing compared to the modern cambodia

Siam never had south Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia or Burma. It was the Khmer empire that had those territories under its rule including Siam itself. I don’t know what kind of history they teach in Thailand but it is backwards compared to what the rest of the world learns about Southeast Asia.
