    Easy to understand. Everything makes sense. Thanks for taking your time to make this video for us beginners.

    I do understand that you have to make sure the outboard starts but you have a dock there, you can tie your bout to that and then start your boat. Don`t ever start a outboard without water, not even for a few seconds. Your impeller is dried up. Another thing, you can also start your outboard when it`s on your trailer in the water. Never dry start it. Just a tip.

    Two ways: 1) Releasing boat from trailer Before reversing into the water.
    2) Releasing boat from trailer After reversing into the water.
    1) With 1, you are relying on the momentum that when you brake the car, the boat will separate itself and drift off the trailer. Car goes a little faster and brakes just before water.
    2) With 2, you can go slowly back and brake, but boat is still attached. Then it requires you either push off by hand the boat (hard if big boat) or use the boat engine in reverse to pull the boat off.
    Which is better ? After 20 years of boating, I'm still not sure. Probably reverse attached, then stop the car, brakes on, detach / let loose the boat from the trailer. Get back into the car and reverse the extra 1 metre and brake quite hard. Especially when you have a bigger heavier boat than this lighter one.
    Where things can go wrong:
    - You released the boat from the trailer high up the ramp and it starts rolling off the trailer - my boat once ended on the concrete ramp. Not so bad, but a scratch.
    - Slippery green algae on the ramp - if too much, it's dangerous and car might slip down with no control into the water.
    - Getting confused between putting the car into forward or reverse.
    - Not putting the car brakes on ! Although obvious, this must be said ! I think most sinking accidents are due to this ?
    - A bad ramp with lots of rocks / wind / sideways current. Sideways current is horrible and you lose control of the boat and struggle.
    Reverse a little deeper, it's easier to separate boat from trailer. Reverse too much electrical might go fuse or car go in water. Reverse too little, it's hard to separate boat and trailer !
    Small boat I like method 2, you can reverse with everything attached and just push off the trailer with engine & / or hands. The boat being light you can push it off the trailer easily.
    Stop and think for 10 seconds before you do it all what you are going to do, and don't be rushed by any other ramp users !

      The last sentence is important: trying to be courteous to other and hurry. Big mistake, especially for newbies. I made that mistake often at the beginning. Then I started to take the time I needed.

    Good video for launching a small boat at ramp that's not too steep by yourself. Found this helpful since I am new to boating and know that I will sometimes be alone when I launch my 16' runabout. Not so anxious about it now.

    Was interesting to watch this... a great vid for those who have never launched a boat by themselves...(except for the dry start). I have a large boat and like you, I took it many times to the lake by myself. It is nice to go out on your boat by yourself especially in the late afternoon right before dark when the water is calm and like glass...watching the Eagles dive for their dinner and hearing the water lap against the hull, having a beer or a whisky listening to Led Zep or your favorite music and there ain't nobody around to mess with the peace and quiet. Catching a few fish and throwing them back but keeping one big one to cook up for the camp dinner...adding some onions, garlic and butter all wrapped in foil...makes me want to go again!

    As a first time boater I found this video very informative... very clear instructions. Only 2 things I would do differently on a personal note. I would give the winch strap some slack but keep the hook on the boat. And I wouldn't start the boat without water going through it. Other than that... nice job! And I'm curious why all the haters are here commenting on your video if they already know how to launch a boat? Just saying...

      Saw your comment after I posted the same thing! These "how to launch" vids tend to miss that part all the time. It's definitely one of my biggest pet peeves. Always those people loading their boats and organizing and doing all kinds of prep work at the ramp, you just want to go get in their vehicle and drive it back to the staging area yourself.

    Like some others have said, you MUST have water going through your motor when you start it. That is due to the impeller (water pump) which is not being lubricated if no water is available.
    Otherwise, very nice vid.

    “Waterproof” or not, it’s also a good idea to disconnect your trailer electrics before you back the lights under the water; just make sure you remember to reconnect before you hit the road. It is not likely but you can short out your lights if they are functioning under water (parking brake light, for instance). Good video for solo boater or someone whose partner is not able to assist with launch and haul out!

    I think that I'll start using this method. The ramp that I normally use is pretty shallow. I have to back into the water quite a ways before getting deep enough water to float my boat. Needless to say that I normally end up wading through the water to unhook my boat from the trailer. Thanks!

  • @socal0buck
    @socal0buck 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    You shouldn't unhook the front strap from the boat until it's in the water. There is a chance it could slide off the trailer.
    This will work for a small boat. For a bigger one you need to get up on the boat and drive it over to the dock. Or maybe use two ropes so the stern doesn't flip around on you, assuming the water is deep enough and you can get close enough to the dock.

      It really depends on what kind of trailer you are using. If it is a roller trailer it is very common that something like that would happen, but if you have a bunker trailer it should stay until it enters the water.

    cool multi views. although I was raised around boats I not have much launching from a trailer experience. We had waterfront property on the barnegat bay and either anchored out, tied up to the dock or for the smaller boats used a block and tackle with rollers to beach them above the tide. Most of the ramps around Jax, that i know, don't have a pier or its a little ways away from the ramp so you have to beach on the ramp... pretty much the same principals though... fair winds

    You flatlanders have it good! Ha ha ha! But then again, where I live, ramps generally have a steeper and a lot of times longer slope. I personally NEVER unhook the winch strap until right before entering the water. I unhook it right at waters edge, only takes 30 seconds at most. Also, never start the engine out of the water, even for a few seconds. Love everything else that you discuss. Thanks!

    Good thing the rope was longer than what you had mentioned. If it was only a bit longer than the length of the trailer, you would have to go deeper in the water to tie up the boat to the dock. Great demonstration, it was enjoyable watching you go through the motions.

      I know a better way and ill share it with you..back up the trailer with boat in water just far enough so its pretty much off but not all the way completely .enough where its floating..go back.unhook tour crank ..get on your boat.lower motor of course..not all the way unless u know for sure its not shallowater..start your engine ..warm up for a few min..than unhook your crank lock..than put the boat in reverse and reverse.u might need to give it some gas reversing so it comes off completely of trailer..have a rope ready with booies..and park your boat by dock or whatever .tie of course and let motor warm up .A BOAT NEEDS LIKE 15 MIN TO WARM UP IF U WANT TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR MOTOR..that'll give u enough time to go park your truck with boat trailer...reason for starting boat on the trailer still is because a boat can mess up ANY TIME.like a car......so when u crank it on and see the motor spitiing water..u know for sure it works..instead of putting it in water and what if it doesn't start..u have to get help putting a broken boat back on the trailer.....been there done that....so when u crank up your motor in the water and if its not turning on or spiting water out of motor,than you know the boat don't work..don't risk putting a nonworking boat in water...always make sure first...

    if you have a roller trailer never disconnect from the winch until you are mostly in the water. i have seen boats land on the ramp before they hit the water. Bunk trailers are ok to do this. I always start my boat once in the water but before you leave the dock. Safe boating.

    • @thefixerupperguy1992
      @thefixerupperguy1992 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed, do not start it without a water source. Don’t even turn the engine over. I’ve seen impellers go bad from customers simply turning the key to make sure it will turn over (not even starting the engine). The impeller will shred and chunks will go up in your engine block and can cause a blockage and lead to over heating. True impellers are cheep and usually easy to replace but a rebuild due to overheating is not cheep. Start it with a water source.
      I’m not trying to be a jerk I don’t want people to dealing with unnecessary drama when fishing and water sports are supposed to be fun.

    • @retrocny5625
      @retrocny5625 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Impellers go bad all the time. It's a soft rubber part that's made to wear. If you own a boat and it sits for long periods(say during the winter), it needs to be replaced every season if you can afford it as they're very susceptible to dry rot. I've seen it happen to others and I've had it happen to me.
      I don't ever start my motor without muffs on it, or unless it's in the water. I don't think starting it for a second or two will do any real harm because it's not gonna over-heat in that amount of time but it's still not a good habit. Launch the boat, tie it up, and then start the motor before you ever un-tie the dock lines. If it doesn't start, put the trailer back in and take the boat out. If it starts, untie the lines and go fishing.

    I let out about 7 feet of the winch strap, back up til the boat floats back around 3-4 feet on the bunk boards, walk out the trailer tongue and get in the boat, start it up, back it off the trailer and drive it to the dock. Docks around here may be 30 yards from the ramp. Nice job on the videol

    If you want to be courteous to other boaters, you would walk your boat down to the end of the dock and tie it up out of the way so other boaters can launch and/or retrieve their boats while you are parking your car and waddling back down the ramp.
    Also, never have a bow line that is long enough to get caught in your prop WHEN it falls in the water while you are underway and not looking. Always keep another longer line on board for when you need a tow because you brought more beer than gas.

    I always keep the hook of the winch tide with the boat ( not very tide and untide it when the boat is already for the half in the water. and than untide it. I have seen several boaters on a steep ramp the boat was launched on the concrete, because it already rolled of the trailer !

    I have the same boat eye and trailer roller relationship. Where the eye has to go over the roller to connect to my trailer winch. Do you have any tips for doing this? It gives me fits if my trailer is not deep enough.

    If you have a nice dog like in the movie, you dont need that rope stuff.
    just go in the water with the trailer than hook up and drive the boat on the dock and fix with a small rope,use fender if you dont want scratch something.
    put the car with trailer on park space.

    No matter how many times I have launched a boat by myself, and made my share of mistakes, I can always learn something. One comment: also watch the tide or current direction, if the boat ramp is in a river.

    No controll on a small boat while launching, if other boaters are around I’d hide out for the aftermath besides launching is easy part loading up is the hard part

    this SUV must use a shift - N - neutral while backward with a boat trailer down ramp to the water...
    never use a shift - R - reverse

    you get as simple as it gets...
    during the summers I worked as a launcher... places where the traffic was so high you cant self launch. drop your boat in the water with me in it, I pole it to a guy in transient parking you walk to the end of the pier prep the boat your gone in 45 minutes or the boat comes out of the water, just like a tow.
    we also kept a list of people that went onto lake for safety. you come off of lake off of list. kept track of those that were permitted to stay on lake over night. assisted stationed game warden and sheriff on patrols. those years saved several people lucky no kids involved mostly drunks.
