VVT is used to increase the volumetric efficiency of an engine... By controlling the time of valve opening and closing.... It is done by a motor or a pump which is fitted on the intake camshaft.....also it increase power and mid torque. It is a nice question you asked.👍

Sohc means single over head cam shaft It have only one camshaft to operate both exhaust and intake valves Dohc means dual over head camshaft It have 2 camshaft one is for operate the intake and the other one operate the exhaust DOHC have greater smooth..

What we hear as an engine note is just it's exhaust stroke? Between every "thump" we hear, a cylinder undergoes 4 strokes?

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) in Spark Ignition (SI) engine(Petrol) is also used for improving the fuel economy.
