I know you were waiting for this episode! 🚙🤩 Rest assured, it still looks pretty much the same as it did in 2004 when we were there last, so I imagine it would be the same for you. I'm sure there has been a lot of expansion and development, but that goes for almost every single coastal town in our country. Countless memories on that beach, in the pools, in the accommodation establishments, in the town, just everywhere! I'm glad we could show you present-day Margate on a quiet Monday afternoon. 😊
@@DustBugsTravel yes thank you, I just loved it. I will be forwarding this link to my two children. It brings back such strong emotions and good and bad memories. Just love seeing it all again. Again, thank you. 🤩😎🥳

Thank you for venturing up to the south coast of Natal, specifically Margate. I lived in Richards Bay for a long time before emigrating twenty-five years ago, and even living on the Natal north coast we still used to travel south to Margate for our annual vacations. As was said in this video, so much has changed in the town in all this time. There are places I recognize, but many spots have changed or been updated that I don’t. Quite honestly I don’t miss South Africa with all that has been going on, but…..I do miss the Indian Ocean dearly and your last two videos reminded me of this. The colour, the waves and the smell. Thanks for reviving good memories.

Thank you guys for showing us beautiful Margate. So nice for Sonja to see all the old places she used to frequent when she was young. Memories, misty water coloured memories. I was impressed by how clean the place looked. I learned to swim at Newlands Pools in Cape Town. It was nice to see where Sonja learned to swim. Just as well Curtis did not try kicking sand in that body builders face. Remember the old advert for those body building stretchy things in the 1970's ? We have a South African vet here in Invercargill who arrived about 2 years ago from Margate. When I asked her why she left beautiful Margate, she said it was becoming dangerous. She reckoned it was no longer safe on the beach and that the public toilets at the beach were filthy. What a shame.
One of Sonia's aunts lived in the US since the 50's and she visited every two years and would always bring otherwordly gifts when she visited. One time she brought Sonia one of those stretchy muscle man dolls clad in a Speedo, no less. She says it provided her and her friends with endless hours of entertainment stretching and pulling his arms and legs. 😁💪🏻 It was good to be back in Margate again and I'm glad you came along. 🚙🌊🌴
So nice to see Margate again. My dad always took us to Margate over December in the late 70's/early 80's, this was before i even went to primary school. A friend and I went there in 2014 during winter time while on a west coast, south coast, east coast road trip and stayed in the tall apartments across the Wimpy for a few days. I want to get in the car and visit Margate one last time. I'm 47 now, time sure flies.

I thin a lot of people have lovely childhood memories of Margate. I get the same about the Karoo and Free State. Happy times with my folks chasing trains, eating picnics by the roadside...mmmm....food never tasted so good! Even getting wailed with the cane from the picnic basket in the middle of the night when me and my brother didnt stop giggling and keeping the parents awake! Ja nee, lekker by die see. Looks so beautiful and peaceful now, but I wouldnt like to be there in the festive season with all the crowds, it would stress me out. Awesome waves at the pier, like they dont want it there and are trying to wash it away. A guy eating a can of tuna on the beach? I wouldnt have kissed him,. The road that leads to those who dont want to be found, but these crime syndicates, they will find you anywhere. Marvellous Margate! Thanks for a really beautiful tour.
I'm blown away by how many folks have such incredible memories of Margate, but then again I shouldn't be surprised if I think back to how busy the place used to be back in the day! 🌴🌊🏖️ Every person's memories are super special to them, I've so enjoyed reading about yours since you hopped on board. Yup, the guy eating tuna on the beach was next-level. I still can't get over it, I can still picture the scene as if it were yesterday. 💪🏻🐠
In the sea and the pools all the time! 🌊🤩 That's exactly what Margate was for my wife too. We were there last 19 years ago and it pretty much looks the same to me still, but I would imagine a little different on a Monday afternoon than over a weekend or during peak season.
Stunning place so beautiful. What beautiful memories thank you for sharing with us and taking us down memory lane with you. These precious memories will forever be printed into your heart❤
Did a little partying here in the mid 90s,was living in Sheppy at the time.I just love the south coast vibe, fishing,or just spending time on the beaches, especially in the early mornings.
Agreed, for us it's also a vibe thing on the South Coast of KZN. I think Margate was the town for partying in the mid-90's. We did a bit of our own there during that time too! 💃🏻🕺🏻 Thanks for watching!
Awe... so many emotions were stirred with this episode. Glad Sonia could also return to those happy places and moments of her childhood. I grew up in PE and only heard of the famous Margate, which truly is beautiful! Thanks for bringing me to it.
It was absolutely fantastic being in famous Margate again! 🚙🤩 It was an emotional, yet very exciting, trip for Sonia down memory lane. We appreciate you coming along!
Happy to hear you're enjoying KZN with us! We've been very keen to return to the province after many years and I'm so glad we got to see Margate again. 🌊🌴
Loved this episodr. Brought back many childhood memories. We went to Margate every December in the late 70s and early 80s. Alesys stayed in Seabrook flats. I had a crush on the catetaker"s son. He was the same age than me. I clearly remember the 2 swimming pools on the beach Sonia mentioned. They were much higher up than the current pool. I also remember Sarie Marais holiday flats. Last time I was in Margate, it was still there. Thank you for good memories
Hi guys Margate was definitely 100 % holiday town the names of the apartments ibiza santarna casa espanol reminds me of Spain and the canary Islands but for me Margate beats them white frothy waves blue seas and a lucky escape for Curtis it's so so nice to listen to your memories of Margate dordling and a muscle man with a tin of tuna classic. Shame you couldn't fly drone but that for security! I always like the drive through the suburbs they were amazing. Interesting air port love the garages the hospital the big mall fill in the gaps of the view of Margate not just holiday place. What a place to take a holiday 5 star thanks for taking me along cheerio till the next one
100% Spanish vibes! 😁🇪🇸 I trust your judgement that Margate is better though, I haven't been to Spain or the Canary Islands just yet! Let me tell you, that muscle man made me feel super guilty, but not for long I might add! I quickly decided that life is just too short and enjoyed my beer, even more than before! 💪🏻🍻 Cheers for joining us in Margate today. I know your Margatre is also a coastal town and probably just as beautiful. 🚙🌊
Hi You Two, Thanks for this amazing trip with you. Brought back so many fond memories. We spent many family summer holidays here, back in the late 50s and 60s. On the first day usually sun burnt our pale skins to blisters, then had to wear shirts for the remainder of the holidays. Remember, no sunscreen back then. The business area you entered into were mostly residential then. We usually stayed in the caravan park and also at the Cutty Sark Hotel at Shelly Beach (don’t think the hotel is still in existence anymore). Those were the days of Dickie Loader and The Blue Jeans playing at the Palm Beach, I can still imagine them singing Sea of Heartbreak echoing across the lagoon. The memories we make with our family is so precious, time to reminisce and play old songs again. Every man’s memory is his own literature. My point of view is that Margate is over developed, but unfortunately that is life. Thank you, Safe travels. Frans
A real treasure trove of memories of Margate, thank you for sharing those with us. 🌊🌴 Margate was definitely an emotional visit for us and we were happy to see most of it looking like we remember it. It has no doubt developed a lot since we were there last two decades ago, but that goes for most coastal towns and villages in South Africa. 🤷🏻♂️🇿🇦 I know of a Cutty Sark Hotel in Scottburgh, but I'm not familiar with the one in Shelly Beach.
Yes you are correct, the Cutty Sark is in Scottburgh, I got confused. Must have been the Shelley Beach Hotel where we stayed, it was near rocks just to the back of a big tidal pool.
I also have very fond memories of Margate. The first time i went there was in 1988. The company that my dad worked for bought a block of holiday flats. The flats used to be called Oppistrand. I also stayed at the Margate Sands in 1990. It used to have an infinity pool back then. My favorite restaurants were the Eat N Meet and also the Cheyenne Spur. There was also another lovely place nearby called The Crab Shack. My favourite gift shop was called The Coral Reef, as you walked through the door, you were just greeted by the lovely sound of wind chimes.. The entire ceiling was adorned with wind chimes.
This brought back great memories for me as well, although I didn't grow up there. When I went on holiday to Glenmore with my grandparents, we'd usually stop at the Margate Mall, where my grandad would get fish bait. I also remember buying a rubber shark there from money I got from doing little chores.
I lived in Margate as a young boy from 1983-1988. My grandfather owned a novelty and appliance repair store in the Margate Court Hof building that can be seen at 2:36. It was called Byrd's Services and sold a lot of interesting things from Nintendo "Game and Watches" (early handheld video games) to those "Dippy Ducks" and other novelty items. I went to Hibiscus Pre-Primary between 1983 and 1986 and Margate Primary School for Class 1 in 1987. My family left Margate in the summer of 1988 to move to Westville, but my grandparents lived a little longer in Margate before joining us in 1990. Wonderful memories of walking down the street and along the beach with both of them.
Very beautiful indeed...believe or not, i am 64 living in a small town just about around 70 km away but its the first time ever i visited these inner places in Margate & Ramsgate just a week ago 17/11/ 2024 Maybe apartheid kept me away growing up because all these places were reserved for Europeans only .Its soo beautiful that i decided to buy an apartment in Ramsgate....
A great trip down memory lane. We never went to Margate to stay. I do remember my first-holiday romance at the age of 15. We stayed at Shelly Beach. Every time I hear Credence Clearwater Revival, Bad moon rising, I think of the sessions at Margate Hotel. My father was not impressed. As you said, fantastic coastline. No wonder it is still so popular.
M not only for Margate, but for Memories too! I'm glad we could take you back there and that you were reminded of memorable times in your own life. It was certainly fantastic to be back, we loved it! 🚙😍
Totally unrecognisable from my memories in the 1950's. At that time all was bush an dirt roads.. There used to be a miniature steam train that ran from what is now the wimpy (worst in SA) to Mac's cottages. . You caught the steam train to the beach. Where your flats Nellelani is today the only building there was the Lucien Hotel all on its own in the bush. The train bridge you mentioned was a narrow guage rail that ran from Port Shepstone to Harding. Was lost to black ownership and BEE.
Interesting to read how much you thought the town had changed, we again thought it hadn't changed that much at all. It was good to see Margate again, after all these years. I do wish I could've seen that coastline still covered in vegetation though, it must've been truly beautiful in the years you describe. 🚙🤩
Do you remember the house boats in Margate?..they must have still been there in the 50s, my father in law always used to talk about them as he grew up on one of the houseboats.. apparently he also started a business there selling ice.. he was called the Nice Man..😊
@@DustBugsTravel Yes, he was very proud of his first job as the nICE Man, he had an old folder full of notes from people thanking him for being such a nice man, and he was a very nice man, i adored him. I wish I could have seen the houseboats for real, they must have been so cool. I only ever saw them in his old photographs, Margate looked pretty wild back then 😍
You seem to watch our videos to point out what we didn't see or do. That's so not how we look at our travels. It's impossible to visit every single place of interest in any particular town or place. We visit the places we want to and include those in our videos which we choose to share with those who may also enjoy them. It's really as simple as that. 🤷🏻♂️
@@DustBugsTravel wow!!!! I actually watch every single one!!!!! I actually thought you may be able to add it to you future list. Think I will re-think watching your channel now.
Hearing the jackhammer in the background as you were looking at the artworks. I know what day you were there. I was across the street at the Grove restaurant trying to eat with that horrible noise going on.😮😅
What a beautiful town. I visited that town every weekend after midnight, Sundays, as a youngster delivering newspaper. I am twenty years in Cape Town now. Just wondering if the Margate fishing pier still exists.
Perhaps you didn't watch the entire video, but I walked on the pier and the waves were crashing wildly against, under and over it. 🌊😳 Unless you're referring to another pier, which I may not be aware of. 🎣
@Ingeborg Van der Veer I hope Cyril rolls out the red carpet for your Dutch Royal Family in every way imaginable! 🇿🇦🇱🇺 One can only hope they have an enjoyable and productive visit to our beautiful country. I'll be sure to stay far away from any traffic jams that could result, those aren't my favourite! 🚙😁
The flat top trees might be Albizias (which are a bit like Acacias without thorns - although I think there are Acacias without thorns in other parts of the world, too). "Flat Tops", I think is the common name I've heard for them. (Because it's been my brother who has pointed out most such things to me, I tend to know a lot of things just by their Latin names - because that's what they teach the shad sheriffs, danger rangers, and other such conservation folk. Saves confusion. There's always a bunch of common names for things, but you only have one Latin name. And if that's the first name you hear, it's easy enough to remember.)
Thanks for the info. 👌🏻 We love trees so much, but I can't guarantee we'll remember that they're Albizias when we see them again. They're fascinating with their flat tops though. 🌴💚 You're lucky to have a brother with such extensive knowledge of botany.
@@DustBugsTravel TBH he can be a bit of a pest with it. ( ;-) Just kidding. But many a true word spoken in jest?) I don't think it's at all necessary to use one name or the other. (And just describe them, as you did, and there you go; you've got one of the names for it without even trying. It's not always that you can do that with a tree - or anything I suppose.)
Born in Shepstone. Lived in uvongo and went to school in margate. Left SA in 95. Still remember when that pool had a waterfall in the middle and slides. Have you done a uvongo video by any chance?

She has great difficulty constantly getting in and out of a vehicle, walking longish distances and struggles to navigate uneven surfaces and stairs. The last thing we need is for her to get injured on our travels. We explore mostly by vehicle anyway and she's totally happy to wait in the car whenever I take a walk. 🚙🥰

I just can't believe how much it has changed. My parents took us there in the 70's. Was in the sea and the pools most of the time.
The famous Margate! Traveling along with you and enjoying Natal
Happy to hear you're enjoying KZN with us! We've been very keen to return to the province after many years and I'm so glad we got to see Margate again. 🌊🌴
Saw a documentary about Tidy Towns and saw this town there... Wow
It certainly looked tidy on the day of our visit. Thumbs up to the Margate folks! 👍🏻
I also saw that.. they doing a wonderful job on the South Coast.. what a difference they've made.🎉
Loved this episodr.
Hi You Two,
Thanks for this amazing trip with you.
Thank you,
Safe travels.
Such great memories at margate in the 90s to 2010s ❤
Very beautiful indeed...believe or not, i am 64 living in a small town just about around 70 km away but its the first time ever i visited these inner places in Margate & Ramsgate just a week ago 17/11/ 2024
Maybe apartheid kept me away growing up because all these places were reserved for Europeans only .Its soo beautiful that i decided to buy an apartment in Ramsgate....
Hi enjoy you videos
Thank you, happy to hear! 🚙😁
Do you remember the house boats in Margate?..they must have still been there in the 50s, my father in law always used to talk about them as he grew up on one of the houseboats.. apparently he also started a business there selling ice.. he was called the Nice Man..😊
The Nice Man, what a cool name! 😎 The houseboats sound super cool too, they must've been awesome!
@@DustBugsTravel Yes, he was very proud of his first job as the nICE Man, he had an old folder full of notes from people thanking him for being such a nice man, and he was a very nice man, i adored him. I wish I could have seen the houseboats for real, they must have been so cool. I only ever saw them in his old photographs, Margate looked pretty wild back then 😍
Thanks, I can smell that ocean! How I miss the warm Indian Ocean!
Such a pity you did not go to Izotsha. Beautiful Lutheran church there
You seem to watch our videos to point out what we didn't see or do.
All good. It's entirely your choice, as always. 👌🏻
@@DustBugsTravel I am referring to the same one, haven't watched the full video yet. Thanks
In 1979 we stayed at the Santana, it was a great time..
But many a true word spoken in jest?)
I don't think it's at all necessary to use one name or the other. (And just describe them, as you did, and there you go; you've got one of the names for it without even trying. It's not always that you can do that with a tree - or anything I suppose.)
He can't be that bad if he loves nature as much as I gather he does. 😁
I was wondering what the place looks like for touring but I'm sure I will visit this time Stephen Makwale soshanguve
The flood was in 2008, then again 2017 and 2019, and then again recently.
I vividly remember seeing images of floods in KZN a few years ago, must've been 2019 then. Huge damage was sustained across a large area. 😨🌊
Born in Shepstone. Lived in uvongo and went to school in margate. Left SA in 95. Still remember when that pool had a waterfall in the middle and slides. Have you done a uvongo video by any chance?
Sorry I meant fountain ⛲️
We haven't visited Uvongo in recent times, no. We'll hopefully be back in the area one day and will explore the South Coast further then. 🚙🌊 We made a brief stop in Port Shepstone in Episode 365 if you haven't seen that one yet. 😁
Is that pool in Margate still open? We visited Margate for 40 years before relocating to Australia.
When we visited Margate in August 2023, the pool was definitely still open and I would think it still is. So many folks have very fond and special memories of Margate and it'll always be a very special place to Sonia. 😍🌴🌊
flood washed wimpy clean
They probably sustained some damage too during the 'cleanup process'. 🌊😳
Margate of old SA is gone.....its just Cement now😢
We saw so much more than just cement. 🚙🌳🌊
There use to be a train that children could ride on
How does it make you feel knowing you were having a blast at your father's holiday apartment while the natives were getting hammered?
We focus on the beauty of our country. Politics, past and present, are of no concern to us. 🇿🇦
@@Jnr619 what a dumb comment. Go fill your time with more productive tasks

Quite the story. 🚙😁
We love your show and watch most of them but we are curious, why doesn't your wife walk with you?
Thank you, I'm glad to hear you enjoy our videos. 😁👌🏻 Sonia has had three failed major knee surgeries in the last six years. 🚙🥰
@@DustBugsTravel Thank you for your reply, we where just curious. Hope her knees improve with time. Keep on making your interesting videos and be safe out there.
It's not like it used to be back in the day's 😂 Margate is now practically finished with tourism .. the town is financially unstable... business is struggling...😮many white elephants 😂
