I think something that is important to mention is that Nihei is known more for his complex art style, and not for his ability to tell great memorable stories. I bought this for the art and it delivered.
Something else to take note of is that this was part of Marvel's failed 'Tsunami' imprint, the goal was to take classic Marvel superheroes comics and make them more appealing towards manga readers, many of the artists were given up to 13 issues to work with, the Venom comic got 18, meanwhile the Emma Frost comic only came out as a single issue. Also strangely Tsutomu Nihei appears to be the only actual Japanese artist that they managed to get on board. 'Tsunami' only lasted from 2003 to 2004.
Also unrelated, but i think the way Nihei draws faces is actually very cool, and it's a good thing to distinguish yourself from other artists and stand out, imagine if everyone drew the same way? I remember finding his style a bit off-putting at first, but then i actually really started to like it, the cold, dead, expressionless features fit the equally surrealistic horrors of the worlds he make up.

Firstly, thanks for the very well put together comment!
Nihei is most definitely an “art centric” mangaka - but his stories are also able to build atmosphere very well. This didn’t work in a single volume release.
I’d heard about the Tsunami imprint - it seems like a interesting route for them to go down even though it seemingly bombed.
I can see your point about the faces - I never thought of it like that!

I tought it was one of the most amazing Wolverine mini-series ever.
The art was different enough to be a breath of fresh air and it fit the apocalyptic future theme.
I also loved the story, even if it was really simple, or should i say, sparse/almost no dialogue. But because i loved the main plot point, it didn't bother me. I tried to see it as if it was a silent movie or as if i was watching someones point of view of the events, but not necessarily their words.
I mean, Wolverine; time travel (although i admit that part was weird, because if she could time travel, why not time travel back to a point where they could do something about the creatures? I don't remember if they explained that in the book.); Nano tech like lethal creatures; them being vulnerable to Adamantium was a really good touch too.
I loved it. But i can see how someone wouldn't. It's not everyone's cup of tea. When i first watched it, it took me a while to get used to the art style.

After reading this first issue I was quite excited as it felt very 2012 dystopian movie but even though it was only five issues it felt like they were dragging their feet the whole time. The story could’ve been told just as effectively in a 48 page one shot. It also gave off the effect that they had the idea for how they wanted to start the book and how they wanted to end it and had to make up everything in between on the spot. The character designs of the characters from the future were intriguing and gave off the illusion we were about to be introduced to an interesting and fun group of resistance fighters but absolutely nothing is done with them. The robot died fighting the final boss and it was written like we were supposed to care but there was zero set up to make us care. It was an alright comic, just wasted potential at the end of the day

I may be in the minority who liked this little Marvel deep dive into manga. This book influenced me a lot when I finally got to draw Logan for Wolverine: Prodigal Son for Del Rey back in the mid 2000s, especially Logan's design of a slimmer frame and wearing a jacket.
