    Back in the Eighties, during the heyday of metal, bands like Van Halen, Judas Priest and the Scorpions were releasing incredible, killer albums packed with amazing guitar playing.
    Today, I feel that the majority of metal is more focused on rhythmic parts with less harmonic movement than what I think of as the approach representative of Eighties-style metal. It is from that perspective that I put together the three “classic” metal-style riffs featured in this month’s column.
    During the NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) days of the late Seventies and early Eighties, bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest were forging blazing, melodic metal earmarked by powerful and memorable song riffs.
    FIGURE 1 is indicative of Iron Maiden’s style: above the progression of three different pedal tones, shifting two- and three-note chord shapes create the melodic content that keeps this part interesting and moving forward.

    No matter how much flak hair metal gets, it seriously is incredible music. To me they are the perfect mix of heaviness and melody. Many people seem to have forgotten that a guitar is a melody instrument not a drum or a bass.

    • @nicwilson89
      @nicwilson89 8 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      They also seem to forget it's a mid-high rang instrument and then proceed to scoop all the mids out, boost the bass and it gets totally lost in the mix and generally sounds muddy and utterly shite :p

    I grew up with bands like Accept, Priest, and Iron Maiden and as much as I like today's metal the riffs of the 80's metal where way more melodic and creative than they are now, Now it's just a lot of drop D chugging with not much else. And every metal band of the 80's were easily distinguishable from each other.

    One question why does using a pick sound different to using my finger nail. The tone changes to a deep tone with a pick not sure why.

    • @666metalsucks666
      @666metalsucks666 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure how to explain that but I'd recommend dropping the finger habit unless trying to play flamenco. Anyway skinny more bendable picks are more for strumming chords whereas thicker ones that don't bend are better for more technical things.

    I think the reason songs & bands were so good then was due mostly to all the money & popularity that a decent band could get if they recorded at least 1 good song & all the competition forced them to record good & catchy music. I don't think the lyrics really mattered as much.

      good tube amp with high gain channel required, low wattage (like 15-22W) makes it easier to get to the sweet spot without killing your ears...also, avoid guitars with floyd rose tone killers on them.

    • @AAlfons
      @AAlfons 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Violet Deliriums yeah and use good pickups!
      I think Duncan distortion is awsome for that kind of metal. Never been fond of active for old School heavy. I use the blackouts mick thomson, if i take the gain down a bit, then i can get a killer heavy metal sound from the laney lionheart we use in the rehearsalroom

    • @VioletDeliriums

      Alfons Pettersson I have Duncan SH-1s on one of my guitars. They are nice.

      Violet Deliriums nice! They have to low output for me to use Daily but they are really nice!
      Best about the emty is that they push the sound so hard without tons of gain! I would never use them if i played old School everyday, but for industrial, swedish death and stuff like that, they sound killer!

      Alfons Pettersson I don't specialize in metal, but I draw from it. :)
