Absolute favorite band of all time. I woulda given thumbs down if they weren’t on this list. To hell with the devil and always there for you should have been on this list as well, in my opinion
Here here!! Well said! Been playing since age of 12. The period between 1968 and 1988 in my opinion is the Titanium Age of Guitar. Some will say, what about Metallica, Stone Temple Pilots, Avenged Sevenfold? I will say they're great bands who've made great contributions but.. in my humble opinion, the musicians in that 30 year period did more to broaden how the guitar was played, learned & expressed. There were so many innovators that took advantage of the increase in electronics technology. And these musicians didn't have the internet & TH-cam to further their craft. Only magazines and other printed media, plus TV shows to help them along.
@@helixxharpell Terry Kath of Chicago transit authority and Rory Gallagher are 2 fine 😊examples of great contributors. I could rattle off dozens more. But, those two came to mind immediately. Thanks for the reply. Have a great weekend.
That tone kills! Everyone here in the comment section may have their opinions on what songs/riffs should be on this list but I think that adds to the fun and quality of rock guitar from this decade. There's too many songs to include. I personally would have included Ratt's "Lay it down", Ozzy's "Shot in the Dark", Def Lepards's "Hysteria", and Queensryche's "I don't believe in Love" but that means i just might make my own video of it. awesome list man!
Thanks for the shout out to Loudness and Stryper. I started as a pro musician during that time period and so much of that was in our set list. Round and Round has one of the sneakiest bass lines of all time. You have to listen for it and once you hear it you can't "unhear" it. lol Loved playing it. It's so hard to categorize that stuff. Maybe we should have just called it "popular 80s metal". lol Sure there was lots of hairspray and makeup but hey chicks dug it. That was the only thing that mattered besides the music. I had hair down to my butt at one point but it sure did get the ladies attention. I had pretty hot young woman literally growl at me at a gas station and say "I hate you" then she went on to explain she couldn't grow her hair as long as mine. lol. One of the best pickup lines I ever had thrown at me. lol
Brings back many fond memories of days gone. It also reminds us of a time when music was actually good unlike nowadays in which most new music really sucks.
I'm feeling well 'cause I've recognised all songs. Haha. Nice performance, so clean and detailed. Congrats. You should play Ninja by Europe, and I wanna rock by twisted sister, turn up the radio by autograph, etc.
Nice Rich Mockingbird. Love all the 80s music. Would love to learn it if I had the time. I will be checking your videos out. They could help me big time.
Ratt - Lay it Down? David Lee Roth - Yankee Rose? Motley Crue - Kickstart my Heart? WTF man? You had some good ones, jesus, Lay it Down has probably one of the most recognizable opening guitar riffs of the 80's. Other than that, most of those are my choices too.
Right...I cant stand rap "music" to me its talentless garbage so I dont listen. But to each his own, I dont go around telling people who do like it they are stupid either, however, like many do me for lovin the hair age. I play keys, guitar, drums, etc. so thats a big reason I like it is the musical talent that no one can seem to admit is there ( mostly some of the best). Im not a jazz or classical fan, but I definitely give respect to the level of talent the players have. Bhah, no one is ever happy now days society is clueless puppets with a cell phone growing out of their hands anyway; if you saw it on facebook its gotta be true right???
I think you made some good choices but I don't think Journey, Iron Maiden and Ozzy are Hair Metal. Journey is prog/hard rock. Iron Maiden is New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Ozzy is more Black Sabbath Style than this.
Your probably right about Journey, but I've always seen Ozzy/Randy as hair metal. Iron Maiden are more "Heavy Metal".... but still have big hair, and are metal haha ;)
Hired Goonage it was also that his dad got very sick and Vito took care of him, while taking care of him he developed really bad arthritis and can’t play the guitar luck he used too. Sad as fuck
definitely nailed this one man! can tell that this is your schtick. great taste, and you seem much more comfortable, as well as nailed the 80's glam tone! very nicely done.
Marino Oliveira To some extent you could classify their 80's stuff as somewhere between heavy metal and glam metal because it was heavier than glam metal, but was still slightly less complex in terms of songwriting than their 70's songs.
Great top 20 hair/glam list, however 2 Minutes to Midnight, Crazy Train and Breaking The Law were not hair/glam. Otherwise I still love this list and your playing style.
The riff that begins at 3:02 was originally from a Kansas song: the Pinnacle. Aside from you know who covering Carry On Wayward Son Kansas was the point of departure for many metal riffs copped later by a range of groups in the mid to late 80's. The music of the 70s from Black Sabbath to Alice Cooper to King Crimson broke new ground, profoundly effecting musicians who grew up with it.
To those generation Z kids in the comments asking, "How did grunge replace this music?" Grunge didn't take over "this" music... all of these songs were written and played a few years before grunge came along. When grunge happened, it was the early 1990s, and all the brand-new hair metal bands were TERRIBLE. They were all young, formulaic dudes trying to copy their predecessors, but they lacked the songwriting skills and substance of bands like Journey, Whitesnake, or even Motley Crue. They were SHADOWS of the culture they were trying to be a part of. The hair metal of 1989-1991 was made up of bands like "Spread Eagle" (who? exactly), Southgang, and Jagged Edge. They were pretty bad, especially when put up side-by-side to the bands we remember and love from the 80s. The biggest songs in hair metal in the year 1990 were by balladeers like Firehouse, Tesla, and Ugly Kid Joe, and although they weren't bad songs, they just didn't bring the party in a way the kids could relate to... not at all in the way that guys like David Lee Roth or Dee Snider had done a decade earlier. The ones that tried to bring the "party," like Warrant ("Cherry Pie") were mocked, because albums like theirs were demonstrating that hair metal had finally jumped the shark, so to speak. Albums like Pearl Jam's "Ten," and Nirvana's "Nevermind" may or may not have been your preferred jams, but they were full of substance and sincerity, during a time when hair metal had lost all sense of being cool or badass anymore. Every day in the 1990-91 hair metal world, a new young band would show up with the perfect "permed hair," the same fast guitar licks copied from the Big Book of Approved Rock Licks, and forced-sounding lyrics about girls, but none of it was landing. Rock fans found themselves ready for Kurt Cobain at a time when music actually kinda needed artists like that. Kurt and Eddie Vedder had a rougher edge, kinda like GnR had on the Appetite for Destruction record... but unlike Axl and GnR, they weren't pretentious and starting to lose touch... they were just delivering the raw goods, and the fans appreciated that. Most bands at the time resisted the change and died out, but those who learned to adapt, like Alice in Chains, for example, found a home in grunge with an audience that was ready to take bands seriously again. So rock...evolved. As it had to.
Warrant was from the late 80s, early 90s and they were awesome. Jani had some amazing vocals and songwriting skills, but unfortunately grunge “took over” when they were just on their second album
Missed one of the double stops in 'Round and Round'. At least it didn't sound right to me. A band I was in covered that song back in the day, but I can't remember how to play it anymore. Maybe I played it wrong but I don't think so.

Mark Zuckerberg zucc?
It pains me but I agree, just not enough of this on internet anymore
Thats because he is playing at low volume, and he doesn't have a bass player and drummer there
they aren't spot on ,often not played right
@@s4lroachclip absolutely bullshit excuse.
you´re right, there are thousands of good solos that is very difficult to choose
Great video 👍! I enjoyed the riffs. I grew up in the 80's high School grad of 1982. Great memories of 80's music. Thank you so much.
Here here!!
@@6stringgunner511 Oh definitely! Really enjoyed their contributions! Thank you and have a great weekend yourself!
As you say, there are way more than 20 great riffs. But each one of these 20 are classic and 100% recognizable. Great choices.
awesome job my favorite genre keep rockin it
STRYPER RULZ! Glad to see them in the list. 🎸🐝🐝🐝🐝🎸
I feel like Vito Bratta of White Lion gets overlooked a lot. He was really talented. That solo on "Wait" is really tasty.
The Little Fighter Solo and Dont give up Solo are the best Solos of White Lion, arent they
Thanks for the shout out to Loudness and Stryper. I had pretty hot young woman literally growl at me at a gas station and say "I hate you" then she went on to explain she couldn't grow her hair as long as mine. lol. One of the best pickup lines I ever had thrown at me. lol
Nice top 20. Great Riffs.
Ozzy isn’t hair metal he is heavy/classic metal
Bark at the moon, the Ultimate sin and part of No rest for the wicked could be considered Hair metal.
Of course his best records are HEAVY metal.
If he played a song from the ultimate sin album is accept it
Hey,Ozzy had the stupid hair too.
You can’t talk about 80s guitar and not add Randy Rhoads
Ozzy is 100% hair metal.
Very nice! Smooth playing! Love your choices.
Brings back many fond memories of days gone. It also reminds us of a time when music was actually good unlike nowadays in which most new music really sucks.
Judas, Maiden, Ozzy... Really?
Alpargata Sucia Journey too
Hair metal not black metal.
The NWOBHM was very glam based
Thomas Grabowski lmao none of those bands are black metal what are u talking abt
@@zman2205 Maiden wasn't.
Great video, there'll always be someone who doesn't like it or disagrees!!!!
A huge thumbs up for White Lion!!!! 👍
That is by far one of the best versions of the welcome to the jungle intro I've ever seen on youtube, well done
I'm feeling well 'cause I've recognised all songs. Haha. Nice performance, so clean and detailed. Congrats. You should play Ninja by Europe, and I wanna rock by twisted sister, turn up the radio by autograph, etc.
Glam Rock= 70’s.
Glam Metal/ Hair Metal: 80’s. 😉
I don’t think it’s actually metal though. To me, its just 80s hard rock
This is classic thanks for posting the video! Good job!
Good to see you jamming on some of the best riffs from a truly great time for metal and hard rock guitar playing.
Keep it up dude.
i dont listen to hair metal but i dont get y ppl hate it so much
Plot twist. The guitarist in the video is Dave Mustaine
bangasou12 People don't FAKE NEWS
I know what you mean. I love hair metal and I dgaf what others thinks.
Msgr. Øystein Nidal Gein 😂😂😂I'm dying
Wooo! Ratt, Def Leppard, and Ozzy made it on here! Just wish there was more Crüe lol.
Killin it. Cool beans. Keep on trucking. The best
Haha keep on trucking? thanks
Gypsy Road was one of the best hair band songs in the 80s.
Ozzy solo's was totaly different from BS sound
I agree, differance could not be clearer.
+Alex Dead Cool Ozzy in the 80s was tottaly hair metal commercial, especially in 1986. He used to tour with Mötley Crüe and Bon Jovi !
Well, they're all hairy, and they all play the same twelve notes... :-0
this video was a blessing to my eyes and ears, thank you for uploading it!
Hell yeah I love anything BC Rich neck thru NJ series!
when you like the video before watching it because you know it will be good
Brilliant! My top 3 riffs at the top. My 2 favourite bands at 2 and 3 and my favourite guitarists at 1 and 2.
finally someone playing some white lion !
Very underrated
guitarist6494 I couldn't agree more.. Vito is one of the best guitar players of that era..
Rob Jarrett yes but unfortunately only a few guitarists know him... i think he actually deserves so much more fame than some others...
The solo For Wait is very melodic.
Wait, waaait. I never had a chance to love you...
I LOVE that Charvel!
Love the hair, takes me back. Awesome playing bro
no Cinderella in the list???
Yeah. Bad Seamstress Blues, Gypsy Road, Night Songs are very memorable melodies
I second the Bad Seamstress riff....that is pure bluesy gold.
SOMEBODY SAVE ME!
GYSPY ROAD
Lol
No Dokken either
I would like you see if you could do the opening riff to RATT- Lay It Down
Love that Soldier Of Fortune was thrown in there!
Some spot on, some sloppy. Not saying DeMartini is easy but that was kind of all over the place.
Vito Bratta
Guitar Beaver legend
This guy.
I wish he’d come around again...
Amazing guitarist who just gave up. I think grunge crushed his soul touch
Dude, Stryper is soooo good!!
how is iron maiden hair metal....
Hmm,... perhaps the spandex pants?
+Nightdare Good Point
That song specifically is very hair metalish
ThyerHazard Lol, so early Pearl Jam is hair metal too? They had long hair...
jack burrows They have hair? LOL
love how your outro for this video is the ending to super mario 64! EPIC
Why is Judas priest here?
Halford literally has no hair. Hard to qualify as hair metal lol.
MrNexxxus he was beautifly bleached blonde in the day
Could be why he lost it.
Marino Oliveira To some extent you could classify their 80's stuff as somewhere between heavy metal and glam metal because it was heavier than glam metal, but was still slightly less complex in terms of songwriting than their 70's songs.
Not the song he choose so much but anything of the Turbo album is glam/hair metal!!!
Wow forgot about Poison by Cooper. Good call. A few of this didnt belong though but I respect you had White Lion, Dokken, Loudness, Stryper!
You make it look so effortless WOW
Great top 20 hair/glam list, however 2 Minutes to Midnight, Crazy Train and Breaking The Law were not hair/glam.
Otherwise I still love this list and your playing style.
You Forgot the song : Inside Out - XYZ , in that song there're so many riffs , Its lead guitar is the craziest I know .
Shit... I would have included that if I knew about it earlier 😱😓👌🏼
Guitarist6494 - - One that doesn't get much credit is "Mean Streak". (I.M.H.O., of course!)
The riff that begins at 3:02 was originally from a Kansas song: the Pinnacle. Aside from you know who covering Carry On Wayward Son Kansas was the point of departure for many metal riffs copped later by a range of groups in the mid to late 80's. The music of the 70s from Black Sabbath to Alice Cooper to King Crimson broke new ground, profoundly effecting musicians who grew up with it.
why is everyone getting triggered on the genre? I love all these songs and this guy is good, I think that's all that rlly matters here. the end
i love your channel,
Thanks for the love my friend 😁

I love all your videos. Thanks and keep them coming.
Omg your strumming action at Welcome to the Jungle is extraordinary
To those generation Z kids in the comments asking, "How did grunge replace this music?"
Grunge didn't take over "this" music... all of these songs were written and played a few years before grunge came along.
Well stated my friend. You sumed it up perfectly.
Man, the economy of movement and precision of this guy is incredible!
these riffs are all technically right but they feel very lack luster in the energy for some reaosn
it's because he uses a very soft pick attack. If you want an aggressive/energetic sound you have to play aggressively
yeah thats a part of it. also no crazy vibrato thats such an 80s staple
Your right.
Missed one of the double stops in 'Round and Round'. At least it didn't sound right to me. A band I was in covered that song back in the day, but I can't remember how to play it anymore. Maybe I played it wrong but I don't think so.
@@guitarmemoir it doesn't. He doesn't add the "rest" on one of the chords.
