The following content is related to the December 2012 issue of Guitar World. For the full range of interviews, features, tabs and more, pick up the new issue on newsstands now, or in our online store:store.guitarwor...
I call this month's column "The Riff Welder" because in it I demonstrate a variety of ways you can bring more melodic content to your power-chord-driven ideas through the use of single-note lines and small two-note chord voicings, often referred to as "diads." I will take a few fairly "stock" chord progressions and, by moving a few notes and voicings around, show you how to devise much more interesting and effective rhythm parts.
You guys are bashing him like he is claiming that he is teaching original material and ripping off others. He is demonstrating how to play a style.. Besides, guitar players have been copping each other's riffs forever...
This might sound stupid but this dude actually got me into playing guitar a lot again with his last video.
it was a really simple exercise how to get some speed in your playing and it ended up being a great way for me to practice.
Thanks man!!! Nice to know I'm not the only one who feels this way judging by the response to my comments. I wish we could just clean house and start all over. Maybe Guitarworld can start deleting the ridiculous immature comments that have nothing to do with their videos. (that would be a whole lot of deleting! haha) Again, I hope they read this and know that there are those who really appreciate the great lessons (no matter how trivial they may be). Not EVERYONE is a guitar shredder...ya know?
I love that American Metalhead intro. Your riffs are killer!
I'm glad SOMEONE is calling them out for it! Most of Guitar World's fanbase is pathetic. They don't appreciate anything, and it's even worse on their Facebook page. Anything they put out gets bashed for no good reason.
Seriously, this is the stuff I learned teaching myself in the first month or two....
Why are people giving this a thumbs up? 14 so called musicians need to practice their ear training. Tune to STANDARD and play along. You'll be amazed as to how well the pitch matches.
When most people learn guitar they tend to just learn the notes and chords in their standard placing and keep using those names no matter what tuning your in. Much easier to quickly find note placement with other players :P
Hahaha..........that's cool. At least you realize it's in standard tuning rather than arguing. Everyone makes mistakes. It just amazed me how many people agreed with you. Anyway, cool to man up and admit you were mistaken! Rock on dude!
Thanks man! Yep, it really is unbelievable how every single vid that gets put up is just ripped apart. I don't know of ANY other channel with such an immature "fanbase". I'm really suprised that they don't just shut the channel down...........but thank God they don't!!! Hopefully, they realize there are a lot of other muscians out there who are very appreciative of what they do.
i see alot of guitarists with access to the internet and youtube commenting. please direct us to your instructional videos. yes this is easy stuff. i'm guessing it's for beginners. i wish someone had bothered to teach me. well, not really. i love the fact i'm self taught minus the books i bought on theory.
Dude this tips really helped me with my metal thank you so much !
Wow, I don't know how tired I was when I wrote that comment, indeed it is NOT in standard D tuning as previously stated (but rather stand E tuning, no special business there), I don't know what caught me off guard there lol. At least I got the comments going!
Is anybody else reminded of Tommy Wiseau when this guy talks?
Amazing tone Mike!
"How to handle antique 80's style metal riffs without breaking them."
I believe that is the idea...
You gotta get your ears checked dude! Seems I can play along with the vid in STANDARD tuning and the notes all sound the same! Amazing!
Thank you, Mike!
Not everyone can play like Tosin Abasi like you can.
@JPlatinum333 Actually, I don't even think they should be called a fanbase! That would imply that they were real fans, and we all know that fans are actually supposed to APPRECIATE your hard work.
jacksons are so fking nice
extending the e5 power chord on the 7th fret A string with pinky, i hear #5, not c power chord. the next thing with b5, i can agree on that, but then again, i hear lydian in the context ::) i know am just nit picking, just thought it's worth mentioning ( i know Metal Mike knows these things).
Excellent
lol where do i get that guitar strap? that things pretty metal.
rebel skull pick box strap.. look it up
The second one is Bad Boys by Whitesnake 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
So nice RR Jackson !!
Finally someone gets it!!
@Thorbear632 UGH! Those comments on Andy and Paul's videos disgust me! Can't these idiots at least come up with new insults? But yeah, I honestly think that GW has the worst fanbase of anything out there, which is sad because of how great they are. And I'm SO happy that you said something about it, since it doesn't look like anyone else really did.
Great post dude!!! Call these so called "experts" out!!! Bunch of immature little children!
that guitar strap is fucking awesome
You are sort of right but not exactly. If you play first inversion on the piano it says 3rd,5th and octave BUT you play the root in the bass with the left hand so...
You make a point here
It never said they weren't going to be generic, at the end of the day if you had a tonne of super original amazing riffs, would you go around teaching them to everyone?
great riff!
Bad boys, by John Sykes/whitesnake
Whitesnake - Bad Boys riff!!
Helped me thanks
05:31 Bad Boys - Whitesnake (sort of)
Lol....yeah I had a look to see if erszebet had uploaded any guitar vids too...but nope. I think this series of lessons has been great. Even if you're a "shredder" I'd imagine you can still take away some ideas from these.
FORTIFY
Nice tone man! i have a Jackson too but didnt sound like that!!! what amp you use???
sounds like something Randy Rhoads would write....awesome
Where do u get that Rhoads TIp cover thing? I never have seen it and google doesn't see it
It looks like electrical tape to me
The videos are unavailable at your website =(
Exactly
You're correct; and he's not playing triads, they're dyads. Only two notes, the third and the root. And the power chords are dyads as well, with a root and the fifth.
10 years late but...he is actually playing the root and the third a step down...🤘😎
"when i was writting this riff" you mean when you were playing bad boys by Whitesnake :^)
Jackson Guitars are for Gods
Liked the plain version better!
@Thorbear632 HAHHA :D I'm DEFINITELY NOT an expert on musical theory whatsoever. I was just really surprised about that "D-tuning"- comment so... But if you're slightly interested you could go to my channel and check out some of my guitar covers :)
No dude. D F# A is not the first inversion it's the root position or tertian form of the chord. The first inversion is F# A D and 2nd is A D F#. Triads only have two inversions.
Not trying to be rude, but he just took most of RATT and Whitesnakes songbook. To his credit he does mention WS. and 80s metal. LOLOL.
the dude said it was stock progressions.. He's trying to show some ways to spice up bland riffs.
@guitarelectricks What puzzles me is how it got so many thumbs up. LOL.
That's completely different man. I'm just saying a triad can't have a third inversion.
You have a sliiiiiggghhht Russian accent!
@guitarelectricks Are fucking serious!? He's in standard tuning and the notes he mentions are all correct. Maybe you should develop your hearing before judging too quickly. Where did you come up with down-tuned D???
This dude is a good player and i like him.But when you are making lessons check what the hell you are doing so you can explain it right. The D major triad he was talking about is 2nd inversion in this case.1st D F# A 2nd F# A D and 3rd A D F#.
you're the best bro..! (^_^)
don't shit on me mike you and i both know that thats a G with an F sharp in the bass
pretty little the title, no?
For some reason, Guitarworld just seems to attract the bottom of the barrel when it comes to comments. Just go and read some of Paul's comments he gets. It's very rare that anything is written with articulation and inteeligence. Just a bunch of whiny, angry children making fun of Paul. Sad.
Generic, eh? go back to writing your "amazing" riffs if you think you're so awesome. He is actually showing us how to use some real chords in writing music and how they work together. Not just use a bunch of random chords that sound evil. Every lesson mike gives i learn something new.
Yea ya i misspoke.
Dear Metal Mikey, please stop nicking whitesnake riffs, and sating you wrote them. Thats not very metal, mickey.
yeah, may be because i dont do "black" metal!
Figure BI sounds like blues/rock...Nothing i can learn here...
I like how he ruined the whole thing by making it country in the last bar.
Very Christian metal again.
bad boys and what ratt song do i hear?
If Toki was a real guy.... lol
How about a non-douchey comment on this video. I like his strap.
Well of course, they're chords dude. You don't shred with chords.
Don't bother explaining. As you can see, the "experts" have already let us know how useless this vid is. I bet Guitarworld understands that there are beginners trying to learn from their vid as well. If this is so "easy", why don't you "experts' just go somewhere else. I'm sure Julliard has an advanced class for you! He DID say it was to spice up BASIC riffs.
You've got something on your chin.
Figure 1B sounded like shit
Hahaha............again, like I said in another comment. You have a lot of "experts" that chime in on Guitarworld's channel. You're better off talking to a brick wall as it may actually listen and learn something! You're gonna be hard pressed to convince that "expert" that it's standard tuning. Unreal......"down tuned D"......lol
It was soooo boring and generic...
do i like his accent or is it annoying?
