I'm black and most of my friends are. We saw Tropic Thunder on DVD when it first came out and we ALL were laughing. Everybody pretty much understood the nuance of the joke

I think you can make Tropic Thunder today. Most people think that the blackface is what is the most outrageous thing but it's Simple Jack. That would be the thing that wouldn't make not suitable for today. The blackface was fine because it wasn't punching down. It wasn't making fun of black people. The movie also acknowledges that it's wrong. The black character is always confronting RDJ about it. The movie is about the ridiculousness of Hollywood. The context of the blackface was fine and I don't think it would be an issue today.

Tropic Thunder was more of a criticism of how convinced an actor has to be to psych himself into the character until they lose their true self identity and become out of touch with the fictional element of embodying the persona of the role
