I was a volunteer firefighter while in high school and college. We had a two story station, but upstairs was a meeting and classroom. No one lived there. We asked the chief if we could install a pole, but he said no. He figured it would take too long for all of us to run upstairs so we could slide down when the siren called us out.
That’s a good reason 😂 We were given two reasons 1) the insurer said absolutely not (though spinny slides fine) 2) it takes most of them so long to climb the stairs in the first place, there aren’t enough of us upstairs to warrant one.
On the contrary, new stations need to have a pole. They protect some. Take the new Boston station that got built. It has poles. The FDNY Ten House (the station near where the 9/11 Memorial is) got rid of its pole when it was built. But it was their choice. The poles are nostalgic.
Single story stations are OK in the burbs and rural areas, but not so in congested urban areas. You wont find a single story station in NYC and almost all of them have poles!

Go take a tour of the new Provo City Utah fire station on Canyon Road and you'll find they did build a two-story with the fire pole in mind
I've seen one level stations with a pole just for looks.

I asked why no more Fire Poles ?
Answer, too many ankle injuries.
