- Howard Jones - No One Is To Blame 1986
You can look at the menu, but you just can't eat
You can feel the cushion, but you can't have a seat
You can dip your foot in the pool, but you can't have a swim
You can feel the punishment, but you can't commit the sin
And you want her, and she wants you
We want everyone
And you want her and she wants you
No one, no one, no one ever is to blame
You can build a mansion, but you just can't live in it
You're the fastest runner but you're not allowed to win
Some break the rules, and live to count the cost
The insecurity is the thing that won't get lost
And you want her, and she wants you
We want everyone
And you want her, and she wants you
No one, no one, no one ever is to blame
You can see the summit but you can't reach it
Its the last piece of the puzzle but you just can't make it fit
Doctor says you're cured but you still feel the pain
Aspirations in the clouds but your hopes go down the drain
And you want her, and she wants you
We want everyone
And you want her, and she wants you
No one, no one, no one ever is to blame
No one ever is to blame
No one ever is to blame

I Graduated in 1989. It was an honor & a privilege to grow up during the 1980's. Not everyone was so lucky......
That is a gigantic comment. Now, I shared your experience. But you are so wise for adding the last sentence.
Amen!
I was in my 20's during the 80's....best decade of my life....went dancing every night to great music.....miss the 80's so much.....
A time machine must have taken me back to the 80's! When it was great to just turn on the radio, lay in bed, and just listen to talented musicians.
Ahh yes, great voices and better lyrics
Class of 90. It was the best time in the world to be a teenager. John Hughs films ,great music, great hair, real communication, and no cookie cutter fashions, we were real individuals then.
Check out your yearbook sometime. We all appear like young adults, long past our childhoods. A good majority of us were employed in some fashion by the time we were 14. School parking lots full of safe, insured, motor vehicles that we worked hard for. Our friends preparing themselves for basic training, trade school, community college, or university. Romance and adventure always on our minds, and our futures were bright. Independence and self-sufficiency was the goal.
Not his greatest commercial success, but very much his best ever song. Lovely melody with an inspired and inspiring lyric.
A lost time. The best. I love this song. I'm 67 now...
Jesus Christ, what memories Of being so happy and free as a teenager growing up in the 80s, no stress, no mortgage, no middle age spread,😂 And no bloody coronavirus, thank you Howard for the memories 🌹
What's also amazing is that everyone looks back to the 80s as this great era of electronic music, but the songwriting craft, all alone, was just amazing. Play this on a piano or a guitar, with no synths or anything, and it's still beautiful. Those were good days.
It's difficult to find a song nowadays with clever lyrics like this one. Thanks, Howard.
Well, in the Top 30 charts, anyway.
Alternative music still has some intelligence.
The average IQ of humanity has dropped since the 1970's...sadly (fact).
☮
Wow. How many years and I still love this song. Oh, 80's why couldn't you go on forever?
Words of truth were more never spoken.
Coke. The 80s had to end because of all the Coke. We would be extinct.
❤❤❤
@@OnlyKoolaid hahahahaha! Would be funnier if it wasn't so true! God bless us all that made it-
The hairspray was eating a hole in the ozone or something like that, then it became greenhouse gasses.
A time that's gone forever. Great times...makes my heartache and miss this time in my life.
👏👏👏👏I know exactly what you mean friend, what a great time to grow up 🏴🏴🏴🏴x
Same feelings....
I feel the same way!
Me too
Howard Jones should write a song about that. I’m sure he’s ace it.
Been at least 25 years since I've heard this song. Awesome to hear it again now. Wow, we really had some good music back in the 80s didn't we?
This song reminds us that in the journey of love, sometimes it's not about assigning blame but rather embracing the ebb and flow of life.
my brother passed several years ago....back in the day he loved this song!! I miss his drunk ass...
How does this only have 1M views? This was HUGE in 86 or so...
Kids today are missing out man...
Your answer 4 years later... cause this is someone who just uploaded this.
His official account has over 3 million views. th-cam.com/video/pekhxxngQ3s/w-d-xo.html
Who's the fool that doesn't like this? 22 years old when this came out, loved this song ever since.
“Doctor says you’re cured but you still feel the pain
Aspirations in the clouds but your hopes go down the drain”
These lyrics really speak to me.
And Ben gets her usually Ben Franklin
Every time.
You can feel the punishment but you can't commit the sin .....
Great song.
...80's really was the best generation for music, shows, cartoons, movies, toys, and styles... :)
There's something about the 80's that soothing... 💯👏👍🏽😀😉
Back to the 1980s...the best decade ever...thanks for this!!!
I listened to this song over and over in the 80's. It was all over the radio too. Thank GOD for 80's music.
me too
I remember hearing this tune in 1985 when I was inside of a pet store in my neighborhood, it's a good tune and I love the lyrics the 80's were my preschool/kindergarten years I miss that decade I'd love to go back in time.
Was this already out in 1985? I just remember hearing it in 1986.

❤️❤️❤️❤️
This is a classic song which will be remembered in the years to come. The '80s was the golden era of music. It was the birth of MTV and The Music British Invasion.
Howard jones was the 80's
yes
rotativo13 80's was the best generation for music, movies, shows, cartoon,s toys..etc.. people didn't know what they had...and anyone who thought the 80's"sucked" either didn't expierence it back than, or doesn't understand it.. 80's was such a passionate time and a brighter time in the world..
Brings back such great memories of MTV and 1986. What the hell happened to music and MTV? Someone could make a fortune if they put that back together again. Fools destroyed MTV.
I had my teen years in the '90s and that was a good time for me. My childhood years were in the '80s and,for me, those were the best years. I reflect on them often and I would love to go back and do it all again.
No other era will ever equal, the great 80's.
YOU'VE GOT THAT RIGHT !😀
Thank You, Laurie for your reply, be safe and take of yourself.
+ratter531 You too hun 👍
Thank You...
ratter531 The best era. Loved the 80s.
Growing up in the 80's was a wonderful experience...I can't go back, but I'll always have the great memories.
We never really know how good we had it until it's gone. RIP 80's.
I was/am a 60s-70s kid who lived and breathed that music. The 80s not so much, but this song speaks volumes. It had me from the first bars. It still does.
80's music RULES and that's a FACT!
Even the singers with just a couple of top ten hits back then had better voices than the headliners do now. 100x more real talent in the 80's than there is today.
WANTED time machine to take me back to the 1980s
If you ever get one come by and get me
Well get a time machine yet ???
I want to go too !!
😎 LOL
Take me!
Uncle Rico is that you??
First, we need a Delorean
It was an era when everything seemed right. The bright colors, innocence, youth and love. A time I will never forget. It still rained in Seattle but, we had umbrellas and coffee so we didn't care.
one of top 10 songs ever heard in my life. nobody could make a song like this anymore.
Music today can't give you those kind of memories. Cool 80's story, thanks for sharing.
loves lost ... time lost ... tears streaming down my face
Yup.
Agreed
Absolutely. Such uncertain times.... I thought this would make me feel better but I’m in tears.
Me too, today is the first time since I first heard it in the 80s that I REALLY listened to the words, and I’m crying my eyes out.
3 decades of life experience on, and I understand the pain and the acceptance in my core, in a way I just couldn’t as a teenager.
Life is both cruel and infinitely beautiful.
Some songs are easily forgotten, and some you just never want to grow old and live in them days when they were big hits, Well im never going to feel old, Thanks to CLASS LIKE HOWARD JONES, I'll always feel 18 year old, So Glad i grew up in the greatest era of all time, AM & ALWAYS WILL BE PLAYING 80s MUSIC.
Damn...still love his voice all these years later
we do we have katty perry ellie goldman lady gaga the list goes on
@comatoast72 ,,,, Wow, you brought tears to my eyes. I had two brothers with Muscular Dystrophy and they loved Howard Jones and many others songs of the 80's. Thank you Howard Jones for making real and meaningful songs. Love you!
A talented and underrated musician.
you can say that again! but just as Phil Collins did background singing with Howard in this song, Howard did so much for so many others as well.
I NEVER realized it was Phil Collins on background until I read this...now it's all I hear. That and the overtone of the drums, classic Phil Collins. Every song I've heard of Phil's the drums are very much in front of the rest of the instruments....same thing here. Very cool, love learning new stuff.
I was an adult in the 80's. I loved and lived every minute of it.
Has always been and still remains .. my theme song …
You can and you can't.
No one is to blame.
Brilliant interpretation.
some of the best lyrics from the 80's and some of the best music underneath...
It was definitely my decade as well my friend. I graduated in 1990, then grew up fast. The 80's were all good times as I remember them.
A brilliant performance.
Thank you, dad, for exposing me to your music whilst I was a child in the 80s. Thank you, dad, for never having the flock of seagulls haircut.
Perfection, plain and simple, sheer perfection.
You can build a mansion, but you just can't live in it
Line hits me hard as a fifty year old carpenter who will never be a homeowner.
Remember, the greatest carpenter of all didn't come to build houses of furniture, but to wash away sins!
Just watched his concert in the park for United Way Utah and he is just as cool and fun as he was 20 odd years ago. Thanks for the music and good memories
Never cared for this Genre of Music until I heard this tune, my gosh look at the lyrics, now that's a song writer, I'm sure this tune touched a bunch of people with what was going on in their lives at this time.
No one is to blame, cannot argue with that.
Wish I could go back and relive the crazy 80’s, great music, friends and the freedom to do whatever!!!! Great times!!!!
The year I graduated.. 1986.. How lucky we were to have gone to High School in the 80's.... This was music...
I agree I graduated 1980 in college in 86
you missed the late '60's...nothing better!
👍👍👍👍
Late 70's....no war then :) and the same drugs..so.. ! WHOOT
Eric Parks you know that's the truth, I spent many a Friday night cruising around listening to the once in a lifetime music👍👍✌✌
I love this song. Howard Jones in Charlotte NC was my first concert when I was 13.
God I miss that music... 60's, 70's, and 80's music will NEVER be matched!! Thanks to ALL those great artists!!
SO TRUE... ALOHA.
Never ever be matched!!!
Dr says you are cured but you can still feel the pain. Yep. So many relatable lyrics.
When this song came out in 1986 I was in love with my girlfriend. Best year of my life
Phil Collins IS doing the fantastic drum work on this one. You are correct. Howard Jones' music is pure genius.
I can remember HBO playing this video between movies in 1986.
Takes me back to 1986 -- the very best time of my life.
Unpretentious, crystalline vocals + great lyrics + nice melody = Pop Classic.
The 80's music was so dam real. So fortunate 2 b a teen back then.
Reminded me of a time sitting in the back of my cousins camaro with a guy I was crushing on,..... of course he liked my cousin....yet, I smile as I say those were the days I miss so much. Running with my cousin, school and the crazy days that went with being a teenager....if any of the 80's Bratts know what I am saying---smile proud!
Yes these were the Golden years! the 80"s! no worries, just being a teenager, those are the times we seem to reflect on as we get older if that was your decade.
graduated in 1988 great high scool song
Hearing a song like this that I have not heard in years take me back to the 80's
"...the insecurity is the thing that won't get lost": my favorite lyric from one of my favorite HJ songs.
It's so true and gets stuck in my head regularly....
One of the most underrated singer/songwriter's of the 80's
Still one of the most popular arist's at Retrofest's.
And little wonder....!
Howard Jones is a true natural writer for music that really matters. The message of "No One Is To Blame" comes through in the lyrics, and I'm sure we have have all been through the blame game, and this song is an exception to the rule. Another reason to love Howard Jones.
I soooo agree!!!!
Much love to the 80's, glad I was able to be a teenager in that time. Awesome music all the time.
Brings back memories..
man i miss those days , we sure had real music . good true pure music.
YOU'RE THE FASTEST RUNNER
BUT YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO WIN
Happy memories ...no one is to blame but i didn't know back them. ...love this song .Always reminded me of my happy high school year ...1986
That summer in '86 was magic for me. 20 years old and full of romance, LOL. This song was one of many that will define that period of my life. The girls back then seemed different than today. Maybe I'm just old now, but they really were worth romancing. It won't ever be same as it was.
Aspirations in the clouds but your hopes go down the drain
To me it's sad to learn music will never be this good again. You would have to build a time machine to experience the 80s again.
This song truly is food for the soul. I was in elementary school; 5th grade... How time flies! Such a great song..
1986 had some great songs. I fell in love that year and I miss her
Wholly 80's Batman, I love this song!! It was played on awesome classic soundtrack too :-)
phil Collins drumming style and pattern with howards writing abilities makes this my 80's alltime fav hit...great upload
Miss the music of 80's.. Never the same
This song is a testimony to the genius of Phil Collins.
Doctor says I'm cured...But I still feel the pain...
Take me back to the 80's...I'm sure It'll fix everything.
mmm, no money problems, time seemed longer, first car LJ Torana, just doing whatever felt good. Yep time travel woulds be nice.
Hey Gus...It was good seeing you & Cessy.

Hey Gus ....Just checking in say Hi to Ceci. Hope you enjoyed your holiday.
Such a simple song and yet when i look back.......growing up ....losing loved ones.....people that have gone....It really makes perfect sense to a lot of people.
yea, usually you remember the good times as your young, forget the bad times, make better times as you get older
+izzy john thats 1 way to think of it, another is proof of the second law of thermodynamics (entropy increases with time)
The decade of my youth. I miss the 80's.
Always one of my faves!
Thumbs Up, 80s will always be the BEST.
Take me ..back ..I need to go back to a good times in my life
Mushrooms, CDs or Cassettes and good friends to sing along.
This boy can sing a song. And you want her ........ but no one is to blame .
You can look at the menu but you just can't eat
You can feel the cushions but you can't have a seat
You can dip your foot in the pool but you can't have a swim
You can feel the punishment but you can't commit the sin
And you want her, and she wants you
We want everyone
And you want her, and she wants you
No one, no one, no one ever is to blame
You can build a mansion but you just can't live in
You're the fastest runner but you're not allowed to win
Some break the rules and live to count the cost
The insecurity is the thing that won't get lost
And you want her, and she wants you
We want everyone
And you want her, and she wants you
No one, no one, no one ever is to blame
You can see the summit but you can't reach it
It's the last piece of the puzzle but you just can't make it fit
Doctor says you're cured but you still feel the pain
Aspirations in the clouds but your hopes go down the drain
And you want her, and she wants you
We want everyone
And you want her, and she wants you
No one, no one, no one ever is to blame
No one ever is to blame
No one ever is to blame
thumbs up for the space man ! on this one always on the radio back in 86 cruising in my 79 Trans Am .
Yes.... amazing song. This is how you deliver music if you have something to say.
This song is so far ahead of the 80's. I can't believe it's from then
I was so into Howard Jones in high school (back in 1999 or 2000), and this seems to be his one song that's still pretty well known. Love the Phil Collins production sound.
+JPMcFly1985Two don't forget the wondrous BASS line by PALLADINO ! that man is a magician with that instrument and of course JONES is a brilliant songwriter!!
I still have the fold-out poster from this album framed and hanging in my TV room.. He is standing below a high window in an old building with long stemmed roses strewn at his feet. He was such a beautiful boy and this music is TIMELESS!
the soundtrack our lives... rock n roll yeah
+Emiliano Ortega-Guerrero SYNTH POP AWESOME
