The sheriff did it! I met Richard Marx in Toronto in '94 at Much Music headquarters. I asked his opinion on who killed Mary and he asked ME what I thought instead. I told him that I thought the sheriff did it - and he said he was "inclined to agree". He was so kind (and so 4:43 cute!) to a giggly teenaged girl. He made a fan for life! I listened to this song (and many others from that decade) on repeat for many, many years! Not sure where you are, Richard Marx, but thanks for all the great music, sir, and for being kind to a kid!
Thank you so much for this. I've watched the video over and over I thought it was the sheriff as he's taking pictures of them at the beginning, then he pulls up in the car beside her, then at the end Mary is running away and you just see a car at the side of her (it must be the sheriffs car). This song is a masterpiece and I love the way the video and song combine to tell a story.

It's hard to find a TH-cam video of a well known song which does not have at least one instance of someone describing it as "underrated". It's almost become as overused as the term "gaslighting".This song had huge amounts of radio coverage in the 90s and went to #1 in 14 countries.

Can we just take a minute to appreciate the amazing age we live in? When this song came out, I would sit in wait, listening to the radio station with my tape recorder (I was 10 at the time). A song comes up that you like and you hit record. Then when it finishes, you hit stop, all the while hoping to catch as little of the radio DJ's voice as possible. Then when you want to listen to a song in your head, you first scramble through your recorded tapes (cassettes) and then forward through it until you get the song. And one day, your tape gets worn out and the song is all twisted, or your player pulls out the tape and you lost your favorite songs. I remember how sad I was when the tape that had this song got destroyed. Now, it is just 1 click on TH-cam or Spotify and typing of a word or two (or just "Hey Google" /"Hey Alexa...") and you get to listen to whatever version of whatever song you want to, in its purest quality, without any risks of it getting destroyed in the process.

I dedicate this in memory of my best friend John Viviano from Deposit, New York who died Saturday at age 40. It's a reminder of our 90s childhood and the way our towns radio station WIYN 94.7 use to be and this song had heavy airplay on that station. The lyrics "we use to walk along the river" is what we referred to the mighty Delaware.
One of the saddest songs every written, but absolutely beautiful! This has been a favourite of mine since 1991 when it was released, brings back amazing memories. Thank you Richard, you are more talented than you were ever given credit for.

I'd forgotten this song until I heard it in a store just last week. My ears perked up and it was instant "Oh, yeah!" What a great song. Lyrical, haunting, amazing.
This song was just played on a UK morning show This Morning, they are having a summer session of 80's & 90's songs and this guy was singing this. I immediately shazamed it. What a beautiful song. So yes I have listening to it in 2024 and will be listening to it over and over again. It is a beautiful song and the video is really good aswell.
My father recently told me that I loved this song when I was around three years old. Apparently I liked most of the music he listened to and kept on dancing, but this song must have been my favorite, he said. I'm 33 now and happy that he got me to “rediscover“ this beautiful song. Thanks, Papa! :-)
The entire album is fantastic! One track Billy Joel plays the piano and on Billy Joel's album released near the same time, Richard Marx sings background vocals on one track.
Like a time machine back to being a 12 year old 😢❤ It felt like I had forever in front of me- endless freedom and opportunities. But I blinked twice and now I'm 45 wtf Life is short so short for any younguns reading this - make the most of every damn day x
1993 a 2 year old kid on old headphones listening my uncle CD player. It took me 15 years to find this song based on a 2 year old kid memory. I remember every detail. Timeless production. Here I am in 2024, June 16th.
uauuuu que bacana!! Vc deve ter varias memorias musicais dessa epoca, pq anos 80 e 90 foram fantasticos! tente ouvir Erasure, The Smithis, Tears For Fears, R.E.M e outras tantas....
Уж точно не хуже, чем у Томаса Андерсона, эта песня примерно конца 1992 г. Просто кто-то попал в ажиотаж и крутился, а кого-то как Ричарда немножко подзабыли.
My girlfriend and I at the time got free tickets to see Richard Marx around the summer of 93. I was never a fan and more of a Judas Priest and Iron Maiden type fan. But it was free and the venue was very intimate. The tickets ended up being front row and I have to admit I was not only blown away but it was one of the best concerts I've ever attended. I was particularly impressed by his extensive and skilled band. Those were fun times.
I love this song the first time I heard it as a teenager, even with less ability to understand it from my lacking of english at that time, and when I fully understand the lyrics and the supposedly real story it was based on, so hauntingly beautiful, a timeless beauty. some days like this I miss the 90s and its vibe, can't believe it was 30yrs ago
Probably this is a fantasy of his own. He imagines what would happen if he do this and then what will have to tell when gets caught by the police... It is crazy but some people like this that's why so many serial killers exist.
Fico impressionado como algumas pessoas tem a capacidade de transformar histórias em música com arranjo e tudo mais. Não consigo nem pensar em fazer uma canção dessa.
Heard this first time when I was on holiday in florida when I was 10 in a flea market 1990 i asked my dad whos that singer,my dad went and found paid vacation album for me dad's gone now but was the best holiday I ever had! Thank you America, from a young at heart scottish manchild🤘👍
This song is dedicated to my sister. I remember she wanted to listen to this song on repeat when it came on about 20 years ago. How time flies. I miss you
I was six or seven when I first heard this song on the radio, and I think it's the first song I really had a genuine "adult" emotional reaction to. Even as a tiny l'il first grader I recognized something hauntingly beautiful about this song.
Mystical, scary, touching, different, timeless, emotional, makes you feel afraid of the devil out there in this world, and at the same time confident in all the good there is also out there in this world....what a song!
This song is one of those few that just hits the spot. Perfect tone, perfect instruments and an unsolved mystery. I heard Richard wasn't going to record this song because he didn't think it was 'quality'. I am so glad he recorded it anyway! Gives me chills...Thank you Richard, for some awesome music!
Absolutely one of the saddest and most haunting songs I have ever come across in my 45 years of life. For some reason, I am drawn to sad, haunting stories and Melodies like this. In my opinion, this is the best song he ever wrote. I remember listening to this when I was back in high school, and feeling like it applied to my life in some respects. I have lived with a disability for virtually my whole life, and I have always felt like an outsider and an outcast, even among the people who should be most accepting and understanding. And so this song has always had a special place in my heart.
@@Rusty-mv1nc and yet, that isolation and separation from the group at-large has benefited my life immensely over the years. I don't rely on others to validate my on feelings of self-worth and value to the world. I have learned to rely on my own good sense and judgment and wisdom, along with accomplishing things to give me that sense of value on purpose. I see others around me who dedicate their lives, so it seems, to molding themselves into what they think everyone around them wants them to be or thinks they should be. It has given me a certain Inner Strength that I have depended on heavily over the course of my life. Friends are a great gift but good friends have been few and far between. I don't need people. I like having them around if they are genuine and good people. But I know that I can also live and be happy without them.
@@kylienagy8381 if you only knew! If you could comprehend how incredibly difficult and frustrating it is to try to socialize with people and make friends when you are living with poor vision your entire life. If you could only see the indifference, and how people feel they cannot relate to me, or believe that I am really so different from them. Even among my own family, there are those with whom I have no relationship because of conflict over what they believe I can or can't do, or what they think I should or shouldn't be doing. Or, imagine been trying to get a job in that field, only to have the person who is interviewing you tell you outright that they can't imagine how I can do the job because I don't see as well as they do. They imagine that if they had the same loss of vision, they wouldn't be able to function. And so they assume that I can't either. And I never get a chance to prove them wrong. That's the kind of Outkast I'm talking about. But it's not all bad for me. I have an amazing wife who likewise grew up with her own disability, and can relate too much of what I have experienced. I learned, many many years ago, through many difficulties, never to spend my life trying to measure up to someone else's expectations or beliefs of me. The result of such freedom is loneliness. That's what I'm talkin about. But I am grateful for such difficulties in my life, it has forged a certain strength of character that serves me well. And my two little girls, and boy to come, will grow up knowing and learning for themselves the differences are to be celebrated, not avoided or shunned.
If youre still reading this in 2022 you have an excellent taste of music but you now growing older and older 😂 those sounds of the 80's and 90's won't ever come back again. Keep them alive and remind them. we wont ever hear those good music as those again...✌

Richard's wife once asked him what he was writing and he told her that it was probably the worst thing he'd written and he would dispose of it. She asked him to sing it for her. When Richard had finished, his wife offered her opinion which was that it could be the best he's written so far. Thanks to Richards wife for saving this wonderful classic. It's not only one of the best songs I've heard in my 68 years on this earth but it's a story of human behaviour that we must never excuse but sadly have to accept as being among us until the end of time.

Xheliz i was just talking to a person before you about feeling and remembering pain as an infant and he was deluded. He said he remembers things from when he was one. So i came to this video and saw your comment and thought ooo not again. But yeh it makes sense with you but that guy was a nut
gunner gallian Hahah it's okay I understand it sounded a little nutty. But it was a long story short and I could've have expressed myself better.
Hazard was not his biggest hit, but as soon as I heard it, I thought it was the best song he'd written. I dare say it has stood the test of time 30 years on. Such a haunting story.
i wonder why it was NOT a hit, this song needs to be revisited on music channels, maybe the gen y gen z trend it
@@gordongekko3174 what you saying about these gens? That you think they'll promote it? I'm surprised you think that. Like on some dumb TikTok videos to ruin it?
@@sowhat... See these days we have to adapt to the current gen and the trends they do, a lot of songs voluntarily or involuntarily are coming back because the z y gens are using it in some stupid video, I am looking at the positive side atleast that highlights awesome songs like these which otherwise people won't know.
@@gordongekko3174 they say there's no such thing as bad promotion. They're wrong. Maybe you're too positive. Who cares if people don't find out anyway? Especially if it's not in a good way.
Sorry for your loss 😞
Great song to dedicate 💫

An amazing talent, only surpassed by his heart. An EMT from Texas and singer songwriter.
Excellent Song by the Great Richard Marx.
The entire album is fantastic! One track Billy Joel plays the piano and on Billy Joel's album released near the same time, Richard Marx sings background vocals on one track.

I hear you. "Prejudiced eyes" resonates with my own experiences, its hard when you don't fit with the norm.
You are NOT an outcast. You are a human being. Please know that you are desperately needed in this world..
