Celtic origins: Who were the Druids?

  • Celtic Genetics and Paganism explained...
    Celts are known for tartan, faeries, druids, bagpipes and the British Isles - but the origins of the Celtic culture lie in the Unetice culture of Bronze age central Europe and it spread out with the Hallstatt and La Tène cultures. In this history documentary, I look at the genetic evidence for the spread of Celts into Britain and Ireland in the Iron Age, as well as the Galatian Celts into Anatolia. Then I examine some Celtic archaeological artefacts such as the Gundestrup cauldron and the Marlborough bucket and I introduce the viewer to some of the basic aspects of Druidry and the Indo-European religion of the ancient Celts.

      @@SH-fz9dy Yes, in Finland and Karelia now in Russia the Lapps call White Finn, there is a definite relationship between the two and Finn is also quite a lot used as a name in those regions. Vikings were much travelled and a Fascinating Warrior people, too many misread their past, go to Russia , you will find they journeyed all the major Rivers and sailed from the Black Sea to Constantinople in Turkey. Being a Cymro we also have a History with them , some good and some bad, but the Icelanders were very different, they travelled to Ireland and Britain Trading for Centuries.
      Keep Well in these Dark days of the Virus, pleasure to see someone who understands what names actually mean.

    • @robertevans8010
      @robertevans8010 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @David Hopkins I know them both. Lapps is an Ancient Name, it is nothing like the N Word, in Finland it is Common as the name Finn, the Sami people are not all Lapps not all Lapps are Sami, many Vikings were Lapps, I am educated and probably a lot more than you think, I am now 103 Years of age, I actually met JRR Tolkien and I befriended him, we had many Conversations about the Finns and Nordic Peoples, he was of course, of that Blood, but l knew him through the Oxford Book Society, it was interesting for me as a Linguist to have listened to him speaking Cymric, if you are a Cymric speaker you will understand, you have a very fine Cymric name, I hate being called Welsh which is a Germanic word, meaning Foreigner , Literally Foreigner in our own Land, Britain, now that is like the N word. Remember the Cymric word for what is now England is Lloegr, which in words means Lost Lands, Celts in Cymru do have links with the Icelandic Norse from before the 9th Century, when Trading was common, their Saga's tell of Daughters of Cymric Kings being wedded to Rulers of that People. Vikings yes, but they were not the same as the Viking raiders around the coast of Britain and Ireland.
      in Russia the Sami are settled in Karelia and they do Travel East into Siberia and West to Norway and Finland, Lapps are peoples of the same areas, but are no longer Nomadic many have settled. Tolkien was interested in the Norse influences on the Gaelic Irish and Scottish Languages, which is obviously quite extensive, it was no influence on the Celtic Brythonic Language.
      Therefore, I would ask you please do not insult myself, if you would have seen what I have done in my Lifetime , also what I have witnessed, you will not call me un Educated , I never Insult anyone, I talk to people, my wife was Danish, I met her after the War when I had joined the International Red Cross. I had been a Major in the Commando's with the SOE. During the War, I spent Two and a half years in the Balkans, I speak Russian and German and Five other languages, not including my Native Tongue.
      Please listen to people, do not make assumptions that they are Idiots, I killed many men in WW2, many of them close up and personal, that I was not proud of, but they were mostly Wehrmacht or SS, we were at war. I became a Pacifist in 1947, I still have all my grey matter, I am one of the few SOE agents alive in Britain, not many left, I will soon be going, I lost many friends to Idiots who were Educated, in Death Camps.

Rome then controlled the area until 383AD when troops were pulled out to defend the mainland of the empire. They were never destroyed though. The Romans had been to Hibernia before, and every once in a while used it to base reserve troops, as they'd helped an Irish king retake his throne.
      Most writings describe the land as "not useful" and otherwise "deficient," much like Scotland was described. Essentially, Rome never conquered these places because they had no use to the Empire, and were more trouble than they were materially worth.

      Roman and Romano-British artefacts have been found primarily in Leinster, notably a fortified site on the promontory of Drumanagh, fifteen miles north of Dublin, and burials on the nearby island of Lambay, both close to where Túathal is supposed to have landed, and other sites associated with Túathal such as Tara and Clogher.

Any time I went back to visit it was mostly Germans and Austrians there, which is why to this day for some reason, I like them so much. Many Celtic/druidry remains are still there. The Gauls left there mark there. Some of our family live around the po valley, still, and also in friuli/Venezia Giulia. Their language (friulan) is not shared with the rest of Italy. Most of central and northern Spain was also fully Celtic at one point, and at least the northern half of Portugal was fully Celtic speaking until the early middle ages.
      Northern Italy was Celtic, as well as Hungary, Transylvania, Serbia and central Anatolia. Celtic Galatian warriors were employed as mercenaries in Seleucid and Ptolemaic armies and some were resettled as landed retired soldiers in Egypt and probably as far east as Afghanistan.
      Celts even settled in western Ukraine in a region which is also called Galicia. The Celts might have had settlements and certainly had trading posts along the Dniestr river and as far north as Lithuania for the lucrative amber trade. They also had trading posts on the Dniepr and Don and acted as trade mediums between the Scythians and the Hellenic and Roman world.

    Watching this again to just pass the time. You should do something similar for the germanic tribes since they make up just as large part of history of the british isles as the celtic peoples do. All of your stuff is good Tom, I'm sure such a video would be no different.

    harharhar got me roaring with laughter. where'd we come from, where we going. at first the historical truths seemed boring compared to the intro, and i thought perhaps there's more truth in the fantasy than the reality, but as the show went on a great story appeared, scholarly, and in chronological order and i really enjoyed the pictures of the artifacts. well done. is it fish and chips or spaghetti and pizza, that's the true question. thank yew have fun.
