    Alan Rickman's breakout Hollywood role! Fun fact: when his character got dropped off the side of the building the director purposely told him they'd count to three before letting him go. They counted to one. Thus, the look of shock and fear on his face was absolutely, 100% genuine!

    Bruce Willis was known strongly as a typecast for romance and romance-comedy films as kind of a B listed actor. Die Hard thrusted him into the action hero/noir genre and gave him that superstar status.

      @@arizona_anime_fan Which is extactly what B-List means. He was well-liked, respected, and sought up, but he wasn't A-listed (superstar). It's not even a negative thing. It's hard to believe now, but people kind of laughed at the idea of Bruce Willis being this hardcore cop. Imagine Kevin Hart who is known for his comedy suddenly is playing a very serious action movie as the hero and nailed it. It's really, really, really hard to branch out as an actor to other genres. Die Hard literally was a make it or break it moment for Bruce and well deserved.

    • @osmanyousif7849
      @osmanyousif7849 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      What's interesting, is that the director John Mctierian (Predator, The Hunt For Red October) didn't want some big action star that the studio was trying to offer him. He believed that John McClane should look like an everyman. This is where Bruce Willis came in to play, as he was known for his rom-com TV series Moonlighting co-starring Cybill Shepherd. But Bruce didn't want the role at first due to his contractual obligations to the TV show, but when Shepherd became pregnant, the show's production was stopped for eleven weeks, giving Willis enough time to take the role for John, getting paid $5 million to play the role.
      This however did not please studios, believing Bruce to be the worst choice to star in an action movie, especially since he only just started one movie throughout his whole career, which also turn out to be a failure. It was also noted that at the time, there was also a clear distinction between film and television actors, where many failed in their recent attempts to make the transition.
      Due to all this controversy, expectations for Die Hard were low; some marketing efforts omitted Bruce's image, ostensibly because the marketing team determined that the setting was as important as McClane. Bruce even stated that if the film was to fail, he would go into early retirement or just stick to TV.
      Well, I guess after today, this film proved everyone from before wrong.

    • @mgeek1
      @mgeek1 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He wasn't exactly B-list. He was a television star thanks to "Moonlighting." Die Hard was filmed while he was on hiatus from the show. No one knew at the time that it would be such a huge hit. It made him a movie star.

    Die Hard and Lethal Weapon were two of the genre-busting films that really took action movies to the next level. The stars didn't have to look like Arnold, Stallone or Van Damme to have audience believing the protagonist can kick ass and save the day.

    Bruce Willis might not think it's a Christmas movie. I guess it's not in the traditional sense. But, so many people choose to watch Die Hard during the Christmas season over the years so, audiences have made it a Christmas movie, whether Bruce thinks it is or not. Plus, it's just another genre of Christmas movie. Just like there are horror related Christmas themed movies. Also look at the first Lethal Weapon. Both Die Hard, and Lethal Weapon are both great 80's action movies set around Christmas time, and are both perfect to watch around that time, or anytime of the year.

Argyle ( De'voreaux White ) also appeared in the Blue Brothers back in 1980 as a kid trying to steal a guitar from the music shop before Ray Charles fired a few rounds near him LOL! Also the scene where Willis jumps off the roof was actually filmed with Willis performing the stunt from a 5 story parking garage. Bruce nearly missed the air bag below and almost slammed his head on the concrete Yikes ! and if that wasn't enough Willis suffered permanent hearing loss in one ear during the scene where he is shooting the henchman from underneath the table as a result from firing a gun so close to his ear. ( Yes even blanks can be very loud like live ammo ) And Mr. Thornburg the reporter yes you saw him in Ghostbusters as the EPA guy that got drowned in melted marshmallow fluff at the end.

    You probably already know the major fun facts, but here are a few more from the director's commentary. He was very worried about the rooftop sequence, particularly about having that many people standing underneath a real hovering helicopter. He knew that one mistake could kill a lot of people, so he called it off after only two fly-bys. Hence why you don't get a good look at the roof from the helicopter until after it's evacuated. Also, the roof explosion wasn't done with a miniature; to get the scale, they set up a camera 5 miles across the city. The director's favorite moment is the elevator "ding" right before it explodes. Also, Alan Rickman's "Alas, your Mr Takagi did not see it that way, so he won't be joining us for the rest of his life" and chowing down at the buffet table was ad-libbed. Same goes with Al Leong, the guy who munched on a candy bar while waiting for the police infiltration.

    This was Alan Rickman's first movie. He had only ever been in theater and TV in the UK up until this point. Talk about a mainstream breakout role. It was Bruce Willis' first big movie hit (he was a big television star on the show 'Moonlighting') but his other movies hadn't really launched him in that area and audiences actually laughed at him in the trailer because he was mostly known for being a charming smart aleck. Reginald VelJohnson (Al Powell) was ready to give up on acting when he got this role. So maybe if not for Die Hard, someone else might have been Carl Winslow on 'Family Matters'.
    I maintain it's a Christmas movie. Christmas motifs all through the movie, a few Christmas songs, etc. But the clencher for me is that the movie's composer actually worked in some Christmas melodies to the orchestral soundtrack. That's a Christmas movie. I love Bruce Willis, but he's wrong.

    The thing with this movie compared to modern movies is that it pays attention to things. he loses his shoes, it comes into it. He finds shoes, they're the wrong size. ammo mattered. he has to think, and information is important. its not just some fancy gun play. thats why john wick was so loved i think, it made things somewhat believable, as ridiculous as they get there's a feeling of it being grounded by some rules.

    Die Hard with a Vengeance is my favorite. Bruce Willis worked on Pulp Fiction with Samuel L. Jackson was didn't have any screen time together so when the Die Hard sequel came around and they wanted new blood, Bruce Willis recommended Samuel L. Jackson.
    Their chemistry and back and forth is fantastic, the movie rocks!
    Check it out!

    This is a Christmas Action movie, remember throughout everything it's also a love story. He's doing this to save his wife and she knows it. Which is why at the end she's like
    Holly McClane. You should watch the next two if you like this one. Stop at 3 though, they never made any more after that.

    RE modern action movies vs older action movies, a lot of it comes down to what I call the Michael Bayification of a lot of modern action movies. Stuff like ADHD editing style, lazy writing, using cheap CGI in place of practical effects, less interesting characters and dialog to get you invested in the story, less effort and overall craftsmanship. Part of the reason why people went so crazy over Top Gun Maverick is the clear effort that went into making the action as good as they could possibly make it, and how rare that seems to be these days.
    In fairness to modern action movies, they aren't all like what I described above. Its also not totally fair to compare the average modern action movie to the very best ones that came out in the 80's and 90's. There were plenty of crappy action movies back then as well. Its not exactly apples to apples.

    a lot of people point out the APC trying to drive up the stairs as being hilarious but almost everyone misses that the SWAT team was trying to cut the METAL lock on a GLASS DOOR.
    also the subtle warning of how bad it's gonna go when the SWAT guy pricks his finger on a rosebush and starts pouting.

    Actually, John knew that Hans was not who said he was, when he offered him a cigarette. If you pay attention very carefully, Hans holds his cigarette in a European style. While, John, being the American veteran cop he is, notices this and is able to catch on. Also, John noticed Hans in the elevator when he read the “I got a machine gun” message.

    Fun Fact: the original intended star for this movie wasn’t Bruce Willis, but was in fact, Frank Sinatra, and there was even a point where they briefly considered rewriting this movie for Sylvester Stallone as a potential Rambo sequel, but that idea with scrapped pretty quick.

    • @liamfitzgerald7217
      @liamfitzgerald7217 ปีที่แล้ว

Probably the same reality where Will Smith plays Neo and Kurt Russell landed the part of Han Solo.

    In my opinion, this first Die Hard is the best of them all. It is truly iconic.
    Interesting side note: do a quick google search for recent Die Hard battery commercials. Bruce did one recently with a 'first Die Hard movie' theme to it.
    It has some actors who also played in this movie as well, the ones who played Argyle and Theo are in it, reprising those roles. It is a great minute of fun...and yes, he actually does crawl through some air ducts in the commercial as well...wouldn't be complete without that... :)

    Back before cell phones, truck drivers and other people who drove a lot used to have CBs, or 2 way radios, that they would use to talk to other drivers. My dad and uncle both had long commutes to work, and they used to talk to each other over their CBs to pass the time as they drove.
