    My Cousin Vinny Movie Description:
    New York lawyer Vinny has never won a case. When his teenage cousin Bill and his friend Stan are accused of murder in a backwater Alabama town, it's up to the nervous Vinny to save him from jail, even though he's only ever tried personal injury cases before, and none of them successfully.
    My Cousin Vinny is a 1992 American comedy film directed by Jonathan Lynn, and written by Dale Launer, who also produced with Paul Schiff. The film stars Joe Pesci, Ralph Macchio, Marisa Tomei, Mitchell Whitfield, Lane Smith, Bruce McGill, and Fred Gwynne (in his final film appearance). The film was distributed by 20th Century Fox and released on March 13, 1992.
    Two young New Yorkers traveling through rural Alabama are arrested and put on trial for a murder they did not commit, and a cousin, Vinny Gambini, a lawyer who had only recently passed the bar exam after five unsuccessful attempts, defends them. Much of the humor comes from the fish-out-of-water interaction between the brash Italian-American New Yorkers (Vinny and his fiancée, Mona Lisa Vito) and the more reserved Southern townspeople. The principal location of filming was Monticello, Georgia.
    My Cousin Vinny was a critical and financial success, with Pesci, Gwynne, and Tomei praised for their performances. Tomei won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Attorneys have also lauded the film for its accurate depiction of court procedure and trial strategy.

    Every time I rewatch this movie I’m more and more convinced that Marisa deserved the Oscar. She’s legitimately great. Comedy actors don’t get nearly enough respect or credit at the Oscars, which is a big part of why people were questioning whether she deserved it, but she killed it. And most actors will always say that comedy is harder to do than drama, too.

      9 times out of 10, when most actors try to do stand up comedy they absolutely bomb. They get so much fake love and think it’s just “talking”. Reminds me of the story I heard on JRE where an actor invited all of his actor friends to come watch him do comedy. His plan was to go on stage for the first time ever in his life as far as comedy and he also dressed up and went on stage 3 different times as 3 different characters….needless to say, he died on the stage that night 😬

    • @vincegamer

      He got stereotyped into somewhat goofy characters because of Herman Munster (and even before that, car 54 where are you). It was so much the case that he assumed they wanted him to ham up like Herman for this role. He was apparently very happy to hear the director wanted him to play it totally straight.

    Law professors sometimes use My Cousin Vinny in their classes to show proper courtroom procedure, including how to impeach a witness and how to qualify an expert witness.
    La Guardia airport was named after Fiorello La Guardia, mayor of NYC from 1935 through 1945. Vinny's middle name probably came from the mayor, not the airport.
    When Marisa Tomei won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, there were rumors that the Academy had made a mistake, and that the award was supposed to go to one of the other nominees. This was terribly unfair to Tomei. As we now know, if they make a mistake and give an award to the wrong party, they correct the error immediately. Tomei's performance really was award-worthy. And as any actor will tell you, comedy is harder than drama.

    The reason I always figured that the Judge took a disliking to Vinny was because of the fact that he had his feet up on the Judge's desk...a highly disrespectful thing to do. But I also always figured that the Judge was just applying the rules to Vinny the same as he did everyone else...that he might have made his dislike of Vinny clear, but that him being a hardass about the rules was just him being the way that he was with everyone all the time.

    I love this movie. There's no real bad guy in this movie (except if you consider the real murderers) and once the innocence of Bill and Stan becomes clear, all charges are dropped. Most law enforcement and prosecutors are not corrupt.
    Fun Fact: When Vinny is trying to explain his "real name" to Judge Haller, he knocks over the judge's chess board. This was accidental but director Jonathan Lynn thought it was so funny and authentic he decided to leave it in the film.
    Language Barrier Fact: The misunderstanding between Vincent Gambini and Judge Haller regarding the two "youts" was in fact a real conversation between Joe Pesci and director Jonathan Lynn. Lynn, who is British, at first had a hard time understanding Pesci's pronounced New York accent. He decided that the routine was quite funny and put it in the film.
    True Crime Fact: Director Jonathan Lynn actually has a law degree and insisted the film's legal proceedings be realistic. In fact, many attorneys and law professors have praised the film for its accurate depiction of trial strategy and courtroom procedure, especially with regards to presenting expert witnesses at trial. In fact, the film has been screened at some law schools to illustrate courtroom procedures.

      The chess set noise also adds authenticity to the Gallow/Callow "mixup." Because he was saying the name when the noise happened it seems more likely the Judge could believe he'd just misheard.

Hang out with people older than 17 and do even the smallest amount of googling and you'll see it on numerous "best of all time" lists. 'Underappreciated' certainly isn't the right word either. I absolutely LOVE this movie for a few reasons. First of all I took auto shop as my major in high school. Years later I used to work on cars. I ALSO worked several my friends mechanic business. He had a 24-hour repair service, we also had a contract for a diesel trucking company. I'd spent a few yrs on & off working on 18 wheeler repairs. At one time I was a NYS Safety and Emissions Inspector. I WAS ALSO certified BY EUCLID for heavy duty brakes and suspension repair. The 18 wheeler tires are pretty big but I learned from him how to pull them off. A lotta people were surprised that I did truck repair because I ONLY STAND AT 4 FEET 10 INCHES TALL! I LITERALLY don't have to bend over too much in order to actually get myself UNDER an 18 wheelers truck frame! 😂 I just kind of been down a little bit with my knees and I CAN pretty much just scrunch myself down so I can crawl under. I can kinda just sit Indian style and just tilt my head a little bit while I'm under there. Also when it comes to the top of the engine, I approach it a little differently than the guys do. They end up standing on the front leaning over and have to move around a little bit more to get to each side. I CAN'T reach the same way by standing on the bumper. SO I HAVE TO actually have to pretty much LAY ON TOP of the engine in order to work. The guys can usually reach deeper into the engine~but I can get into the tighter spots because my forearms aren't as big as theirs are. LOL 😂 I Also love this movie because when I went back to college in my MID 40's I took Paralegal as my major. I had to stop due to the coming disabled. But my intention was to go to John Jay college and become either a defense or a human rights attorney. I've always been interested in the law. I'm an international prisoner and human rights advocate for 38 years. I DEAL WITH every level of the legal system~from my juveys TO my people on Death Row.

Other great legal dramas are The Rainmaker, A Civil Action, Erin Burchvich, Murder At First,The Nurmberg trail. The part that always kills me is the public defender who looks so perfect and than he is completely useless where he cant speak at court.

    Son of Sam is a real case - it was very scary while it was going on.
    Yes, Fred Gwynne was the one and only Herman Munster! And yes, Marisa Tomei won the Oscar for this role.
    LaGuardia: yes, the airport, but the airport is named after a famous mayor of NYC, Fiorello LaGuardia.
    The judge made it very, very clear at that first meeting that he is a stickler for procedure, and warned Vinny that he was, so this is perfectly in line with expectations.
    Not Jersey! Marisa's a Brooklyn girl!

  • @bookwoman53
    @bookwoman53 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Poor Fred Gwynne wanted people to forget about his role on the Munsters so that he would be taken seriously as an actor. He did a great job as the mysterious old man in the original Stephen King Movie Pet Semetary.
    Regarding grits, there is an northern Italian dish made with cornmeal called polenta. Vinny should have recognised it.

    FYI: The problem the judge had with Vinny is that you have to be licensed to practice law and it is illegal to practice law without a license, so Vinny was trying to get out of there fast. It wouldn't have voiced the trial, since the state dismissed based on the new evidence but could be grounds for a mistrial and have it done again, regardless of the verdict. Vinny would have been arrested and had a nasty fine / minor jail perhaps.

    • @nikolatesla5553
      @nikolatesla5553 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Vinnie has a license to practice law. He can practice law in NY on any case. But not in Alabama. However, a lawyer can handle a case in another state by making a pro hac vice (on this occasion) motion to the judge overseeing the case. The judge approved this arrangement based on what Vinny told him at the beginning which was false. Making false statements to the judge is certainly illegal and Vinny was afraid he was caught.
