    Your Rush covers are essentially listening to the album with bass more upfront in the mix, they’re that good.

      I appreciate your honesty. I'll be honest too, the choruses sort of drag from a bass player's perspective. Thanks.

      That's a nice thought, but it's only a bass and I like the voices of my far less expensive instruments just as much.
      It is very nice to be able to get so close to Geddy's sound as he sounded on the tracks he used the Wal on. In terms of Geddy, the Wal is probably the one instrument he used where the sound was as much from the bass as it was from his hands, if you know what I'm saying.

    This is one of the songs that first made me want to play bass and I still can't can't play it half as well as you do. Very well done.

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  8 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Cool. It's not a competition. If it makes you happy to sit down to play, and spend time with your bass and some quality music, that's all that matters. Thank you very much.

    • @BryanMaxDobberstein
      @BryanMaxDobberstein 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It was meant more as an expression of admiration rather than competition, but I can see how I might have said it better. Thanks for the great videos.

      The Studio Albums box set has a version of Presto that's much better balanced than the others I've heard. Much more prominent bass. I love it!

      Not many people mention that. Even for, what I might consider, a simpler song, I put quite a few hours in on it. I enjoyed playing the Wal while I had it, but it was far from my favorite bass.

    I was trying to think of a word to describe your work here Troy and couldn't think of one whilst I was viewing, so I guess "mesmerising" fits the bill fairly accurately. If Wal were ever in need of a promo to sell their basses, they need look no further than this. It's exactly how I would want my Wal to sound. Well done Troy and thanks for taking the time once again.

    • @TJH3113

      Thank you for the very kind words. That was very nice of you to say.
      Wal doesn't need any help with selling their basses. I believe even Geddy had to order his, wait in line, and pay full price.

    This is one of the toughest Rush bassline Geddy ever created ! And one of their best song ! There’s a bucket full of notes by the square foot and you played it so perfect and well. Believe or not, it’s by listen to your videos that I renew with playing bass and will never quit again ! Again you played it so well with a bit of your personal touch. What amazing tone out of the Wal! I never knew a thing about them before watching you after being a rush fan for years. Your YYZ lesson has been inspirational and I watched it day after day until I felt comfortable (still working for 140bpm). I do beg you TJH to put more metronome performances for the very technical songs. Was really hoping for a slowed down La Vida Strangiato. More than all I hope you are playing with musicians as talented as you, because you are truly great at your craft. Cheers from IL.

      Rush means so much to me. When I turned 5, I got Moving Pictures on 33. My dad and I bonded over our love of music and it does make me smile that you play the songs correctly. I don't have to tell you how technical the songs are, and the odd meter is my "something shiny" . Again, thank you and I will continue to watch. Blessings. P.S. how did you come across the mask behind you? That is so interesting!!

    One of my all-time Rush favourites. And you nailed it - as always. Hats off.
    And that Wal... man, this is my no. 1 dream bass. This thing sounds like a giant coil spring that's come alive. I played my pal's Mk 3 once and it was hands down the best sounding fretted bass I've ever held in my hands.
    Many years ago I used to dream of an Alembic, I finally got one, it's been with me for over a decade now... but for the last several years I can't stop dreaming of a Wal bass. Actually, a pair (a fretted and a fretless one - I'm a massive Mick Karn fan), and even one would be more expensive than all of my basses combined (yes, including the Alembic - it's their mid-range Essence model) and two would cost more than all of my basses and my 3 old Volvos combined ;-) So... maybe one day. Maybe.

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's great to hear, I'm glad you liked it.
      It was my #1 dream bass as well and I definitely enjoyed it for the time that I had it, but I found it to be a bit of a, for lack of a better term, one trick pony. Your "giant coil spring..." analogy is perfect and it does that sound like nothing else, but I found that it was, for me, limited to that specialized voicing. When you plugged it in you automatically sound like Geddy Lee on the Power Windows album. I'm sure you could get it to sound, pretty much, however you wanted it to, but I think how it sounds in this video is pretty close to the truest essence of the sound of this bass. While it's great for this stuff, I thought it sounded a bit too over the top on other material. When I had it I would find myself stepping over it to pick up much less expensive instruments that I enjoyed playing more. That's the main reason I got rid of it.

      It was underrated, wasn't it? I remember being a little disappointed by it when it came out but it quickly grew on me.

      I think 1985-1996 in general was their most underrated period of music.

      TJH3113 have you ever thought of making a playlist that starts with what you would consider entry-level rush tunes and working toward more difficult ones in the playlist? I suppose that would have a different relevance depending on the players style or skill but nonetheless I think it would be helpful for some of us to know where to start if we wanted to take on Rush tunes. Saw your video today on how you do your video recordings. Enjoyed that very much! Thanks for posting that. It's amazing how beautiful something and sound and how simple the set up can be. I'm a firm believer in less effects and more technique.

    Perfect Again Troy! The Time Stands Still DVD is great, but 2112 is played a step down so Geddy can hit the notes. The Bonus material is of my first concert, Rush at the Capital Theater 1976!

    Now that you have the Wal, would you consider doing Marathon again?

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. Funny you should ask that. When deciding what song to post, it was between Marathon and this song. I just thought this one sounded a little better, in terms of the mix and balance of my bass to the music. I have another neat story to go along with Marathon when I post it. Thanks for asking.
      Additionally, I had already done a cover of Marathon using the Spector before I got the Wal, so that's floating around my computer as well. And, from what I can remember, it sounded pretty good.

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's right...you got it. (actually, I'm not that clever but thanks for giving mw a way out).
      I may have said this before, but, its funny, there are certain riffs (like the first long one in the bass solo of this song) where, if I were to play it on any other bass, I'd have a 60% chance (at best) of getting it right. The long run in "Time Stand Still" is another one. However, on this bass, it's almost as if I couldn't botch them if I tried.

    • @JimmyJames714
      @JimmyJames714 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      TJH3113 Cool, so, you're saying that bass has no wrong notes in it? 😃 Is the scale length or neck width much different from say, a Jazz?
