In terms of Geddy, the Wal is probably the one instrument he used where the sound was as much from the bass as it was from his hands, if you know what I'm saying.

The Studio Albums box set has a version of Presto that's much better balanced than the others I've heard. Much more prominent bass. I love it! Not as prominent as this of course 😅
I was just inspired to relearn this song. I got Presto the day it came out and the t-shirt. I was 16 years old back then lol. First song I learned. There was no internet back then had to do it all by ear.
I cannot fathom how much time you must practice to learn all these songs down to every last nuance? Damnit now you have me jonesing for a Wal again!! 😀

This is one of the toughest Rush bassline Geddy ever created ! And one of their best song ! There’s a bucket full of notes by the square foot and you played it so perfect and well. Believe or not, it’s by listen to your videos that I renew with playing bass and will never quit again ! Again you played it so well with a bit of your personal touch. Your YYZ lesson has been inspirational and I watched it day after day until I felt comfortable (still working for 140bpm). Excellent job! You nailed not only the bass part itself, but the tone too. Of course, having the right bass goes a long way to matching the tone. Thanks Mike. Yeah, this bass has "that" sound, right out of the box. It gets closer than any of the other "Geddy" basses I've owned over the years. I could never get a Rickenbacker to ever sound anything like he did. Yeah, that was a long time ago.

One of my all-time Rush favourites. And you nailed it - as always. Hats off. And that Wal... man, this is my no. 1 dream bass. This thing sounds like a giant coil spring that's come alive. I played my pal's Mk 3 once and it was hands down the best sounding fretted bass I've ever held in my hands. Many years ago I used to dream of an Alembic, I finally got one, it's been with me for over a decade now... but for the last several years I can't stop dreaming of a Wal bass. Actually, a pair (a fretted and a fretless one - I'm a massive Mick Karn fan), and even one would be more expensive than all of my basses combined (yes, including the Alembic - it's their mid-range Essence model) and two would cost more than all of my basses and my 3 old Volvos combined ;-) So... maybe one day. Maybe.
That's great to hear, I'm glad you liked it. It was my #1 dream bass as well and I definitely enjoyed it for the time that I had it, but I found it to be a bit of a, for lack of a better term, one trick pony. Your "giant coil spring..." analogy is perfect and it does that sound like nothing else, but I found that it was, for me, limited to that specialized voicing. When you plugged it in you automatically sound like Geddy Lee on the Power Windows album. I'm sure you could get it to sound, pretty much, however you wanted it to, but I think how it sounds in this video is pretty close to the truest essence of the sound of this bass. While it's great for this stuff, I thought it sounded a bit too over the top on other material. When I had it I would find myself stepping over it to pick up much less expensive instruments that I enjoyed playing more. That's the main reason I got rid of it.

I suppose that would have a different relevance depending on the players style or skill but nonetheless I think it would be helpful for some of us to know where to start if we wanted to take on Rush tunes. I just thought this one sounded a little better, in terms of the mix and balance of my bass to the music. I have another neat story to go along with Marathon when I post it. Thanks for asking. Additionally, I had already done a cover of Marathon using the Spector before I got the Wal, so that's floating around my computer as well. And, from what I can remember, it sounded pretty good.

They've pretty much said in the comments everything I could think of saying, so I will ditto their sentiments. I wish I would have thought of doing that first, I mean... That's right...you got it. (actually, I'm not that clever but thanks for giving mw a way out). I may have said this before, but, its funny, there are certain riffs (like the first long one in the bass solo of this song) where, if I were to play it on any other bass, I'd have a 60% chance (at best) of getting it right. The long run in "Time Stand Still" is another one. However, on this bass, it's almost as if I couldn't botch them if I tried.
Your Rush covers are essentially listening to the album with bass more upfront in the mix, they’re that good.

This is a totally underrated song by them. Presto is the first Rush album I bought and listened to it nonstop for 2 weeks.
It was underrated, wasn't it? I remember being a little disappointed by it when it came out but it quickly grew on me.
I think 1985-1996 in general was their most underrated period of music.
You are a true fellow Rush aficionado and I, Sir, consider you an authority on Geddy Lee's bass playing style. Well done. (tip of the hat).

Thanks. Funny you should ask that. When deciding what song to post, it was between Marathon and this song. I just thought this one sounded a little better, in terms of the mix and balance of my bass to the music. I have another neat story to go along with Marathon when I post it. Thanks for asking.
Additionally, I had already done a cover of Marathon using the Spector before I got the Wal, so that's floating around my computer as well. And, from what I can remember, it sounded pretty good.

That's right...you got it. (actually, I'm not that clever but thanks for giving mw a way out).
I may have said this before, but, its funny, there are certain riffs (like the first long one in the bass solo of this song) where, if I were to play it on any other bass, I'd have a 60% chance (at best) of getting it right. The long run in "Time Stand Still" is another one. However, on this bass, it's almost as if I couldn't botch them if I tried.
