Mid 60's here. Regular scope and iron sights it is. Phones and computers are great, but I print off just about anything I save online (folder etc..) Everyone in my family can use a manual can opener, because we don't even own an electric. Takes up too much cabinet space for one thing. Everyone in the family can start a fire in adverse conditions. I believe loosing electronics, even electricity, would be small compared to loosing tap water. If you've ever had to boil water, you know what I mean. I'm the only one who can fire up and connect a generator to our switchgear, but anyone can use an extension cord. Can't stress safety enough. I'm originally from the DFW area. I still have family there, you may know some.
I recently stopped wearing my Apple Watch and switched to analog watches. I’ve never been happier. It’s been years since I wore a traditional watch. The sad part is that I own some really great watches and they were just being stored away. I attended a class with the New Jersey Search and Rescue team. They really opened my eyes to the benefits of an analog watch.
Got a new traditional watch 6 months ago, was tired of constantly charging a watch. Do use the Apple watch when I exercise or walk, but not going back to regular use
@@lancephilip I agree. I've been using the iPhone since the 3GS model (2008) and have never contemplated getting an Apple watch for the same reason. In fact I even got rid of most of my battery operated watches because I got tired of having to replace batteries and paying to get them pressure tested to ensure they maintained their water-proofness. All my watches are either automatic Seiko Monsters, or G-Shocks with Tough Solar and Radio controlled time keeping.
I hear ya! I recently bought 2 Casio watches this week. I just received my G Shock Rangemaster yesterday and am waiting for my blackout “CasiOak”, Tough Solar model to arrive. I love my Apple Watch functionality but im ready to unplug and go back to a regular watch. Also in case something happens and im unable to charge the AW. Gym use for the AW will still be there.
I have gone back to wearing pocket watches, because of analog's multi-use, and when someone asks me the time, and eyes waiting to see what brand of wrist watch im sportin', will just look for another person wearing a high dollar watch. Also, i always carry a compass with me, works well in all but the most extreme environments. Thanks for sharing, you Mighty Awesome Devil Dog. ERRAH!
Unlikely many of us would need to navigate with a compass, but I used to when I did forestry work in the pre GPS days. Good to have one, set to the right declination for your area and know how to orient on a map (paper) and navigate through the woods. I worry that our brains are too dependant on GPS (mine is getting that way for urban nav). I used to drag my kids to orienteering events once or twice a year just to give them the flavour of basic navigation.
If you live in the USA there is more generic way to navigate, look up interstate and highway grid and number system, it is set up kinda like a graph with numbers getting higher in north east to smaller in south west and the state route last number has meaning, I would explain it all but would take to long but our highway and interstate system is set up to help you nav anywhere in usa
@@scotlackey9819 thanks for this background. I'm in British Columbia was thinking more about a rural/wilderness scenario. I guess its beyond the scope of EDC anyway, but I was just thinking about our dependance on electronics for navigation.
Growing up in the country we had to deal with a day or two without electricity, no running water. Being a skilled reliable adult just makes sense. Maybe another barter briefcase video is in order. Great content as usual.
I really like that you tackled this topic. As both a Software Engineer and a concerned/prepared citizen, I try to rely on technology as little as possible as I learn these skills. Learning range finding using a card instead of laser, using radios instead of phones, etc. I do want to call out that a GMRS license from the FCC is cheap and requires no test, so it’s a bit easier to get into than HAM bands. I would like to afford an unpowered Trijicon ACOG but man those things are expensive 😂
You've made some great points young man! As a baby boomer I've used a compass to navigate, CB radio to communicate, scanners to listen in on official communications, shortwave ssb radios for weather and disasters such as hurricane Andrew'. I often wonder whats Millennials and gen z going to do if the $HIT goes down.
Amen X! I'm a big component of having a big stock of batteries. Rechargeable gadgets are great, until.... Technology/electricity is gonna get hit one day on a big scale.

Here’s how I feel about emp. 1: probably not gonna happen 2: and if an emp does hit, the likelihood of you AND your buddies stuff being destroyed at the same time is pretty high
Based on my reading about EMP, it won't be as universally destructive as people think. Items with long antennae and attacked to mains power could be in trouble, but a smart watch on your wrist would probably be unaffected or recover after a restart.
Topo map, compass, protractor, binoculars. Only real tech I use that’s electric. Starlink, gps, iPad, and iPhone. All encased in a faraday bag and pelican box.

I’ve been thinking of the Garmin tactix because it has offline maps and cans last off one single charge 20- 30 days but also have a d-ring watch as well you just in case. Ha !
I teach survival since 1986 but don't teach electronics and don't rely on it. If you want to learn how a GPS works you'll have to go somewhere else. Itá map and compass with me. I allow students to bring their phone for emergency calls and taking pictures and that's it. They can bring a flashlight/headlamp but I teach them to go without, etc. Good video!
I used to have my entire contact list memorized, about 30 telephone numbers. I've had a cellphone continuously since 2003. I no longer remember my contact numbers. Tech sometimes makes you lazy or dependent upon something else other than yourself. I guess I'll get myself a little black book...
I agree but I do have faraday lined closet where I keep my solar generator, powerbanks and ham radios , faraday closet or just box is fairly cheap to do and will be important if we get into it with china, china has been working on emp tech for a long while now and I’m sure they will use it after how our country has shown we panic and turn to civil unrest every time something goes wrong, be safe all, be prepared
💯 Great video, Marine-- as much as you like 'tech stuff,' I didn't figure you as the type of guy to have a realistic view about it. Glad I was wrong 😏👍
Mechanical watches are the worst choice. Super fragile, least accurate, still susceptible to emp’s, and highly prone to problems. Get a digital quartz solar watch like a g shock

Yo have to have analog as part of your EDC, go-bag, etc. Old school lensatic compass for example. As far as radios, HAM is great. But GMRS is easier to get into as it is sort of HAM-light (no relation to Bud-Light) it uses repeaters just like HAM to increase communications range by hundreds of miles. Also GMRS can communicate with FRS radios anyone can buy and use from Walmart because they have a few shared frequencies. GMRS radios do not require a test like HAM, only a license. Per the FCC one GMRS license covers the whole family per household. I recommend people look into the FCC rules for themselves, I am no expert. Semper Fi bro
EMP doesn't even have to be some enemy attack, it could be a solar eruption from the sun jacking up our technology. Having a mechanical watch (or two.... or ten) is a smart idea.
