Triumph Tiger 1200 Rally Explorer - Why I would have a big Touring bike - and a Mutter

  • As the name suggests, I ride all year round and in all weather (well nearly all weather) and when it really gets tough I like to know that the motorcycle I am riding can cope. Last year in particular we had some extreme wind and rain and without my trusted Triumph Tiger 1050 I would have been stuck. The smaller bikes are fine but tend to get blown about in gusty wind and you can get swamped by heavy rain and traffic. The Tiger helped keep me planted and out of the worst, having that higher riding position really helps. However, it was a very heavy and top loaded beast that was at times difficult to manhandle and although I never did drop it there were times I came close. As you know I changed the 1050 for the 900 which when I test rode, found to be light, well balanced and easy to move about.
    When I saw Uncle Stu’s video, whilst I totally agree with the majority and the sentiment I could not help but notice that he was basing his reasoning on older bikes. I wondered if he would think the same if he tried the new bikes. Of course I can’t talk about the BMW GS as I have never tried one but I was surprised what I found with the Triumph Tiger 1200 Rally Explorer.

    You keep churning out quality. I too liked Uncle Stu's video and thought he spoke enormous sense. My own feelings on large capacity is something we've corresponded over - and is much in line with yours.
    I came from the 'BMW world' so have some experience - and perhaps too subjective.
    The GS is an interesting and very important machine in the development of motorcycling. I'd say it is responsible for the modern adventure machine, including this Triumph.
    What a turn around from a machine, the original 'little' GS, which existing owners approached with great caution, later elation for a 'city' bike turning into the 'ultimate' transcontinental tourer standard (what happened to the RTs crown!) by adding a lot of weight, and power. I think the other manufacturers followed suit and this Triumph - with variant stylings like the big Kawa Versys, Suzuki VStrom and others, saw the opportunity.
    For me, the original GS, with an adventure fairing (in the same way as the R100 spawned the RS and RT add-on fairings) would embody the simplicity, and weight saving agility, of the machine.
    And...queue Himalayan/Scram, perhaps with that nice Baak fairing I sent a picture of to you.
    I think BMW, maybe still the discerning choice of the affluent that they were (or in my case, sell your soul to have one) are still overpriced, even more so than they once were, now still trading on the superior German engineering, quality and finish they could once demonstrate but now, I think, can't.
    These behemoths (Stu's good choice of a word) do offer the comfort smaller machines lack, the ease of power on big roads which does, however, often translate to a loss of fun on smaller roads. They also offer all the bells and whistles which I agree are an economic decision by the manufacturer to not offer on smaller, now mid range, machines. But we started on 650-750 'behemoths' with all that full faired comfort (well, such as the electronics of the day allowed), and that could still be the case. Your comments on that KTM390 display an example. "Why don't Honda add cruise control to the NC750X", is a common question, not to mention a comfortable seat. Both apply to many mid-range machines. But of course, the manufacturers are playing those prices and encouraging the upgrade to their bigger models, which elicit greater servicing profits for the dealers, and so on.
    Yes, Stu should try the others, but I suspect he would still come to the same conclusion.

    I think Uncle Stu is right in his mind that you don’t neeed a big bike but if you want a big bike that’s not an issue these days. For myself I now find my Classic 350 does everything I want but for others they would find it lacking. As a side note I travelled back from Wokingham to Basingstoke yesterday afternoon in howling winds, a lot of the way side winds and have to say “Omega” never moved once, just planted to the road, I was amazed !
    On another note the sound of the 1200 now they have altered the firing order, to my mind I much preferred the note of my old 12 reg Street Triple 🙂

    • @TAYM
      @TAYM  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes my 1050 had a marvellous tone to it. I too believe you can just about do anything with most bikes. In fact on the Himalayan two up video with Mrs TAYM, we had really strong side winds and it didn’t budge an inch. However, this morning I switch from the 500 to the Tiger to come into work. It was torrential rain (as it had been all night) with many side roads flooded along with parts of the A14. I plumped for the A14 route in and out there in the wind and rain, mixing it with the hgv’s, vans and nervous car drivers, I muttered to myself, there was no bike I would rather have been on. Yes I could have done it on Bertie and with a smile on my face but it would have been a slightly nervous smile and I am pretty sure I would have arrived a little wet at work. As I said, I don’t disagree with a lot of what Stu said, just not all. 😊

    I have to be honest, if I was a few years younger I'd be happy on a big tourer, but a couple of years ago my big old 955i Tiger was getting just too cumbersome on the drive and in the man-cave. I do miss it from time to time on the motorways, but it wouldn't be of any use on some of the mountain tracks I've been using Blizzard the Himalayan on. Perhaps the answer might be a bigger man-cave! Nice overview of the big 'un. Cheers.👍

    I haven't been in agreement with Stu all that often lately but I'm largely with him on this issue, I can't see the point in paying a zillion dollars for a premium large tourer/adventure bike when I wouldn't need its full capacity for anything more than maybe 5% of the riding I do.
    It's the same with cars, I live in rural Western Australia and I see them all the time on long weekends and/or holidays, running up and down the highways in $90,000 Toyota Land Cruisers or tricked out dual cab utes with all the fantasy off road fruit when the only off road driving they do is the 500 meters of gravel that takes them from the highway to the campsite or caravan park. The rest of time those behemoths live up in Perth and spend the bulk of the time dropping the kids off at school and driving to work or shopping. Down here in Australia we call them 'Suits in utes'.
    If you do actually use them for the purpose for which they're designed then fair enough but I suspect the bulk of them are the bike equivalent of the suits in utes, especially in the UK where to be honest you don't really have large distances to cover. For the money I'd rather have a couple of cheaper bikes that are more focused on the type of riding I do, for me it's an Interceptor for highway riding and a Classic 500 for the back roads.

    • @TAYM
      @TAYM  ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you entirely but for me, my little tiger is my Ute and although it is only needed for around 15% of my riding, it is 15% I need to do. Of course I could use a car instead but I am a motorcyclist and do not want to. I almost thought Uncle Stu, when he was talking about the fuel economy, was going to suggest that you might as well use a car. He didn’t of course but I can’t help thinking that’s where he was going. Anyway, great comment 😊 thank you 😊

    Cracking video as usual TAYM, I think Mr Feelinglum has had a downer on most subjects recently, I had to give up watching his videos about 12 months ago.. he's had nothing new, relevant or interesting to say for ages.
    Personally I love a big adventure/touring bike, you sit up higher than other bikes and are able see over most car roofs for anything dangerous. As for the extra weight and equipment, Theres a bit of a recurring moan on V-Strom forums about all the extra bits on the 1050XT has over the stock 1050 with the stock 1050 owners saying stupid things like you don't need switchable cornering ABS or multi level traction control, we didn't have that years ago we just used the throttle . . . Blah blah blah... Or hill hold and hill descent control? Just cover the brake! Blah blah blah....
    All well and good on a gentle incline but try pulling away on a fully loaded bike on an incline greater than a road camber and you'll be thanking a very clever person for inventing such things! My argument is they are now standard on most higher capacity top end bikes nowadays and are an invaluable safety item.. I'd rather have them and not need to use them than not have them and need them!
    Rant over and relax! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

      Marvellous, it is a clear case of horses for courses, I don’t need a bike that can do 70, 80, 90 or even 95 percent of what I need to do, I need to do 100%. Even if that means having two or more bikes. I don’t like it when people argue that a certain bike will do 90% of what you want to do. I mean, imagine I want to go to London and could only get within 5 or 10 miles of my destination! I could give a million other examples but it just gets silly. It simply doesn’t make a good argument especially when you have no experience of the very thing you are rubbishing, if you know what I mean. Still a lot of interesting comments. 😊

    That is a marvelous bike there but it would be too tall for me-5ft 8inches with a 29 inside leg. I actually like the style, but to me something like the old Honda 750-800 VFR would be my choice. I`ve toured to Devon from Staffordshire on my old CB250 back in the mid 70`s. But as you say, a bigger bike is more planted, safer I think, and you were right, you have to cope with the awful driving by other road users. Stu F remembers touring on a small bike, OK, but in those days they were more powerful. My CB250 had 30 hp and I still found it wanting in situations like a long pull. Besides he has a garage full of bikes to choose from ,and I don`t think he would choose his 350 over his T120 to travel a long distance. He is right about the GS being a behemoth though, too heavy, too wide, and too unwieldy for anything other than motorway touring.

Plus, something i shall touch on in my Friday Mutter, my mate Richie sent me a photo of his Vstrom 1050 loaded up with all his gear for a 10 day tour, including bike spares, in all weighing over 60kilos, stick a couple of middle aged humans of average size and weight, that would seriously effect the brakes, handling, fuel economy and just about the all round ability of a 250 or 350, no matter how slow or careful you go. Modern larger bikes have all the weight slung down low (in particular the VFR) so any added weight is counter balanced. Still it was a good video just a little biased and perhaps made for clicks. I trust what you are saying entirely, Triumph are a small player in the world of motorcycles, selling on about 80k a year across all their models and with no car manufacturing to support and share research and development they will never be BMW. As far as Ducati go, from friends that have ventured down that road, it is short lived and dotted with both mechanical and electrical issues. However, all say the same, when it all works they are exceptional. Only what I’ve heard. I must get out and try some for myself. 😊 thank you 😊

    Yes but no good for me. I wouldn’t be able to touch the ground. Now you know why I have the meteor

      The Meteor is a jolly marvellous motorcycle 😊

    I agree, riding the bike is for fun, not economics. If you use it for work, buy a cheap 350 cc, and a second bike for fun.

    Actually even worse are these raised seats at the back. I could ride them but can’t get my leg over anymore! 🙄😂

      😂😂😂😂 that is an issue even with 34 inches of prime inside leg sand only made worse by slightly injury torn stiff hips 😂😂😂

    These bikes are really mile munchers rather than trail bashers. The GT explorer makes more sense than the rally Explorer really. In the right hands though they are very off road capable.

    Thanks TAYM. I'm sorry, and I'm sure it's me, but I just don't get the point of a 550 lb, $20,000, semi-offroad machine. If I want to go down a gravel road on my Bonnie or Tiger Sport 660, I do it; albeit, gingerly. If I want to haul ass down a gravel road, I grab one of my quads or use a purpose made dirt bike to do that. Like you said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and, IMO, these ADV monstrosities are uglier than a mud fence.

      No need to be sorry and I am sure 100% it is not you. 😊😂😂

    😡 Right that’s it. I’m starting a campaign to limit the height of motorcycle seats to 800mm, and that is being generous! Can I count on your support? There will be free leg reductions on the National Health included - just for you. BUT for YOU they will be compulsory, to free you from the curse of the 34” inside leg! 😡😡😂
