Recycling is great! But also good to remind everyone that before recycling, it’s best to try to first Reduce, then Reuse, then Recycle. Reducing comes from only buying products you need and finishing it, Reusing can be done by up-cycling or repurposing the packaging and reusing the bottle/jar again until you absolutely have to “dispose” of it and that’s when you Recycle it.

If you’re in malaysia, you can recycle any cosmetic product from any brand with L’occitane. Even concealers, pumps, mascara, etc and they’ll also sort out the products for you so you don’t have to think about anything, just make sure you clean up the product 100%. You also get points for it and they give free gifts depending on how much you recycle which is great to test out their products since they’re an expensive brand. This is available at any L’occitane store nationwide.
Also, recycle all your Mac products at any of their counters. 6 items will get you a free lipstick of your choice. Lush also accepts their black pots back to recycle. 6 pots gets you a free face mask of your choice.

It's really awesome to see a business owner speaking directly to consumers about this topic and taking accountability. As a new skincare reviewer I have had my share of guilt suddenly acquiring so many products and not knowing what to do with empty components. For personal care products it's a bit hard to think of any alternative methods to relay products to customers so its amazing that KraveBeauty is launching a sustainability initiative to handle post consumer materials and I hope other businesses get more involved with waste management as well!

I’m glad that sustainable has become a buzzword. It’s been a long time coming. Finally someone in the beauty community makes a video about this. Thank you! Keep em comin ❤️

Check out your local city’s recycling guideline
    WHAT CAN’T WE RECYCLE?
    1. Mixed materials
-Like PUMP DISPENSERS (loại ấn xuống) which is very convenient but it’s a mixed materials of plastic and metal spring so workers would sort that out and toss it into a landfill
⇒ Disassemble the metal string out of it OR just recycle the body part and throw the pump into your regular rubbish bin
    - Also SHEET MASK POUCHES and TOOTHPASTE TUBES are mostly mixed materials
-Makeup items like eyeshadow palettes, blushes, eyebrow pencils, mascara tubes, lipstick tubes too
-MAC has an back-to-back program, LUSH is 1 of those pioneers in sustainability, GARNIER has partnered up with TerraCycle which is an amazing recycling initiative, and Kiehl’s and Origins
    2. COLORED CONTAINERS might be very very hard to close the product loop/ might not be recyclable in the 1st place
-Like yellow or blue or green glasses/ or colored packaging like black plastic containers
    3. COATING OF THE CONTAINER matters too
-If the plastic bottle or plastic packaging is matte coated, it has a really luxurious matte touch and it might be very very hard to close the product loop
    4. FRAGRANCE and NAIL POLISH BOTTLE might be the hardest to recycle
    COMPOSTING
    - Normally referred to food waste
    - But if your SHEET MASKS and COTTON PADS and COTTON BALLS are made up of 100% cotton, it might be compostable
-Might move to wash-off masks (I’m from Mugwort Mask)
    WHAT CAN BE RECYCLED?
    1. METAL (especially ALUMINUM)
-Probably the most valuable recycling material
    2. AEROSOL CANS
    - Like hairspray, dry shampoo or anything that comes in a can
    - Be sure to spray out every single drop so there’s no product remaining, but please do not ever CRUSH or PIERCE THE CAN because that can be very very dangerous
    3. CLEAR GLASS JARS/ PACKAGING and CLEAR HARD PLASTIC BOTTLES
    - So many materials like Polypropylene (PP), Polyethylene, PET. There’re high and low density
    - Educate yourself on all the plastic identification
DO WE NEED TO WASH OUT OUR PRODUCTS?
    - Yes, most recycling facilities would encourage wash all the remainings inside so it doesn’t contaminate the entire bin of recyclable materials
DO WE TAKE THE LABELS OFF?
    - The excess glue would be burned away but if it’s a paper label and you want to recycle that, you can separate it
MAIL PACKAGING DUE TO ONLINE SHOPPING
    - If it’s just 1 material like a single CARDBOARD BOX, it’s recyclable
    - If it’s a material like BUBBLE MAILERS ATTACHED INSIDE a paper bag, those are 2 materials so you might want to separate those
INVEST IN WHAT YOU REALLY NEED

I’m so happy to see that this topic is being brought up by a business owner and influencer like you because I always feel like it’s a topic that’s never really talked about in the cosmetic and beauty industry. There seems to be a lot of focus on the marketing and selling of a product but there is never enough focus on the proper disposal of a product or in making productions more sustainable. I think it’s crucial for industries, like the beauty and cosmetics industry, to promote sustainability and reflect on their production processes as they are producing and selling a lot of products each day.

  • @YingApplebox

I would LOVE to see you try to do a zero waste or low waste skin care + make up routine.
Also, brands like Loccitane and The Body Shop are starting to have products where you can bring in your own container to refill some of their products, too!! If one day Krave Beauty is able to have a store front with a refillable option that would be so amazing!!
I do really think sustainability has to be talked about more among regular influencers, too. Like, if you're a travel influencer, you should be making videos talking about how to can travel more eco-friendly e.g.talk about choosing to vacation somewhere you can go to by train instead of flying. Or if you're a beauty influencer then give a shout out to some of the skin care brands that have compostable packaging, etc.
Anyway, I love how Krave Beauty, although a rather new brand in the market, but you guys are thinking about sustainability + educating your consumers about it! 3 cheers for Krave Beauty's team and to you, Liah Yoo.

I’m glad that there are detailed guidelines available on what is recyclable where I live, but so many people don’t even bother to look them up 🤦🏻‍♀️ Unfortunately, my city doesn’t recycle squeeze plastic tubes and one of my fave moisturizers is in that kind of packaging... and I’m not gonna give up on that just yet lol... but I’ve definitely made some different purchasing decisions since becoming more conscious about what is recyclable. Some products I just stopped buying altogether! Great video Liah 👍🏼

THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! I dont even have a YT channel and was thinking of making this my first video because NO ONE is talking about the billions of pounds of waste that come from packaging.
I've been saving all my empty products for almost a year now because I want to recycle them properly. It weighs down on my shoulders when I throw things in the landfill.
Something I want to mention is in my county, aerosol is considered toxic waste. Its vital that each person does their own research and takes advantage of free recycling.
Recycling costs money sometimes. Terracycle is doing amazing things but some of them cost $
And lastly, I admire that you as a brand owner are doing your part in minimizing your carbon footprint. I think the biggest issue we face in this subject is that there are minimal laws and regulations in the packaging industry. Packaging now has become vital to sales. The nicer the packaging, the more likely it is to sell. Most people don't know how to recycle or even think about it. Education about recycling is the most important thing we can do right now. I think ALL brands should be responsible for the waste they create. Not all of them need to offer recycling programs, but they should play their societal part in educating their consumers on how to reduce waste. What is happening in the world is disgusting and heartbreaking. I can only hope people like us make a difference. Thank you again.

Greetings from 🇨🇦 Liah, I am so glad I found your channel, thank you it has been very informative. I am becoming ever more concerned about the amount of make-up I own. Covid lock-down has prompted me to shop my stash, and I realize how much I have and do not use, especially when not even leaving the house. I started thinking about how much is out there exponentially and how will it all be recycled, if at all. This morning I decided to start checking the Coporate website for Coty inc (owner of Cover girl) then L’Oréal, and I was disappointed. Their sites are quite vague and do not have clear information or guidelines for recycling their products. They really need to get their act together. I have always known Mac has that amazing “return to Mac” initiative and that is so awesome. I love Mac for many reasons and that is one of them. Am starting to feel anxiety when thinking about all those billions of bottles of unrecyclable nail polish, most of them with the varnish still inside (because who ever uses up entire bottles to spotlessness?), the chemical paint still inside, is ending up the at the bottom of our beautiful oceans. I am making to clean all my recycling, whether food containers or beauty product. I split up the recycling when there are mixed materials. I also flatten all the cardboard and paper products to make sure there’s room for as much recycling as possible in the bins. I have shared my spotlessly clean and flatten philosophy at home with family and also at the office pre-covid. Please keep up this 👍amazing content Liah. 🙏 Thank you and Hugs from Montréal 😊

I’m so glad you uploaded this video TODAY Liah!!! ☺️
I’ve left a lot of comments at KraveBeauty IG promoting asking for a change of packaging or a refill program.
I’m so glad you’re thinking about change the packaging of Krave’s lines.
Thanks to educate people about to be more responsable consumers.
I have been obsessed looking glass packaging thinking that was the only way to be more sustainable but now I know aluminum is another great option.
I’m trying to don’t t buy any plastic bottles and I hope the next moisturizer that Krave has been announced come in a sustainable packaging that starts this change!
The problem with plastic is the industry that hasn’t created another ways. Please demand your favorites brands to do this changes. We don’t have a Planet B and try to give up the bottle using bar shampoo and conditioner, even there are body balm bars now. Invest your money in sustainable and ethic brands.

I absolutely adore Liah for making this video - she's perhaps the first (that I know of) owner of a beauty brand who says no to excessive consumerism! This is so true - the amount of waste humans are currently producing is simply NOT recyclable. We absolutely need to reduce what we buy in order to create less waste.

OMG! I was just thinking about this for the past 3 days!!! Because I just looked at one of the bins and realised it is full of various empties (plus sheet masks) and I started imagining how they'll make animals suffer ,and pile up to make a "modern art mountain" (maybe we should send it to Tate), and since then I have been pondering on how to go about recycling then. Great job making this video, Liah, as always! Best wishes and much love from London

Thank you so much !!! I felt so bad not recycling the empty containers because I didn't know how to do it. I mean if you throw something in the recycling bin and it is not recyclable I've heard that the whole lot becomes unrecyclable.

Also, my city recyles plastics #3-7 and #7 is other, which is typically what is said on a lot of skincare packaging so just check the company your city uses to recycle or your cities recycling guidelines. Always rinse your products out 😊

This is super informative and useful! I tend to reusing the empty plastic jars, like the aloe gel jars since they are big I can use it to keep my bobby pins etc.
I'll check out more info about my city regulations about this, thank you so much for increasing my awareness 💙🙏

Thank you Liah for raising awareness on this issue. For removing labels, I would say no because they contain packaging information which helps the recycling company to identify the type of plastic the packaging is made of. Hence, easier for them to separate the containers before recycling as different types are recycled differently.

YASSSS THANK YOU!!! I was JUST about to start asking all you skincare and beauty TH-camrs to do a video on this!! I absolutely would like more content like this and maybe a way to educate consumers would be an info sheet we could keep and distribute to friends and share on Facebook etc. also thank you SO MUCH for caring about this as a producer! I’m so disturbed at every aspect of our global society recycling system producers consumers education government it is all so screwed up and needs to change !

I remember mentioning the sustainability topic idea when you asked about video content ideas, so thank you for addressing this! 💚🌴 just came here from IG after Krave's recent sneak peak pic of the moisturiser, and I think I understand the move towards a jar instead of a pump/tube now! I'm still not sure how to feel about it (due to hygiene purposes), but I'm looking forward to seeing the ingredients! 😊😘

Wow, this is very helpful. I recently started saving product empties and was amazed by how much waste I create.
I’d love to see you guys launch larger products to help reduce waste. For example, I’d happily invest in a 3-5oz bottle of the Beet Shield, as I go through it so quickly. ❤️

@@LiahYoo That is very true, I understand what you mean when it comes to Krave Beauty. I'm looking at the larger companies, e.g. Estee, Loreal, Unilever, Proctor
If companies could show the consumer how to separate the different components for their products, that might be easier when it comes to recycling.

Pacifica also has a recycling initiative, plus they are cruelty-free & vegan. :-) They are currently the only brand I buy because my county does not offer recycling of ANY kind. I was also told by surrounding counties that I would be fined for dropping off recycling if I was not a resident. So sad. :-( I am desperately trying to reduce overall consumption, in the kitchen, too, and have been making a lot of my own stuff. It seems like the best option.
