I've heard that putting dry shampoo before your hair gets oily helps. Once your hair is dry after washing it you use the dry shampoo and it will suck up the oil.
I used to shampoo my hair everyday, now I it's only every 3-4 days. At first it was really hard, my hair was so so so greasy, it feels dirty and ugly (obviously) and it also smells. But ur body will adjust, it took me about 2-3 weeks to get from shampooing my hair every day to once every other day. And then another 3 weeks to get from that to once every 3 days. And then it gets easier. Now (without ever intended to) my hair is not easily getting oily and I can shampoo once every 4 days. So good luck, u just need to trust on ur body. Hope u can understand my english (it's not my first language)
keep at it, when I first started washing it less it became really oily quickly, but changing your routine consistently should get your scalp used to washing less. Use dry shampoo to remove the oily look until you wash
I remember as a kid I’d love to keep my hair outside in the sun as much as possible because I wanted naturally lighter hair. Finally, when I was 17, a hairdresser pointed out my hair was severely damaged by the sun. I was shocked because no one ever told me that was possible so since then I’ve been wearing hair sunscreen during the summer which has completely transformed my hair!
@@Littlemissdidi a hair sunscreen from Soltan. Very oily so I spray it onto my hands first and work it in. I think you can use normal sunscreen too but might be a bit heavy

If anyone see's this, another big physical cause of hair damage is leaving your hair down/untied in the car with the windows rolled down. The snapping your hair does in the wind is also a big cause of friction and breakage because the force is so violent. So try to tie your hair back or wear a cap if you're worried about matting or breaking your fragile hair! (this applies to windy days. boating, biking, etc) have a good day
This is actually extremely helpful, thank you so much. 😊 I live in an area where it’s windy/ breezy a lot, so these tips will definitely help keep my hair healthier.
Touching your hair often is also damaging your hair, according to hair stylists. That's why the hair in the front is often more damaged than the hair in the back.
Try changing your shampoo and conditioner to sulfate-free products, if it still is damaged then apply some hair mask/oil to your hair an hour before you shower. Hair damage is also closely related to your diet, so maybe look into how nutritious your daily food intake is for your hair!
@@nuna5767 i don't know what the reason is. I've been using cg friendly products for years (I have slightly wavy hair), and my diet is decent. My hair just never behaves properly.
@@gargeesarma5709 It might also be from humidity at the area you live in, or the air polution. Polution really worsens everything from toe to hair :( Do you put your hair up in a ponytail or bun a lot? Doing that daily would also weaken your hair cuticles and make your hair less healthy, sometimes even leading to thinning. If you are using Tresemme, I heard that there is a class-action lawsuit for it because the customers are suing it for causing hair loss. Changing the brand of your shampoo and conditioner might really help a lot!
Exactly. If I comb my hair dry it will snap off, but if I detangle gently with lots of conditioner and water I only have split ends after 8 months or so.
That's what I though, like what? I ain't combing my curly hair when it's dry. That's literally like killing your hair. I can only comb it when it is wet and after that I don't touch it anymore throughout the day.
If anyone has curly hair, a protective hair style is braiding! I've bleached my hair twice and its helped retain my curls. Also, oils are amazing, especially mixed with a carrier oil.
I was going to comment that people with textured hair have a different playing field. Highly porous hair does NOT only come from damage. People’s porosity is different from many reasons. An ACV rinse is not going to magically change that. Sealing oils help fill in the gaps as they’re molecules are too large to penetrate the shaft. Styling while wet is our main way to avoid damage.
Liah could you do a video on oily scalp and how to deal with hairloss having oily hair and what products would you recommend in this type of condition.
You need to hydrate and moisturise your scalp. Most often you get greasy hair because your scalp is too dry and is overcompensating by producing even more oils.
I’ve always heard that the final rinse, when you wash your hair, should cool water, which will cause the cuticle to lay flat, resulting in shiny, stronger hair.
Except that when you close the cuticle it makes it harder for your hair product to penetrate the hair after a shower. This is good advice for straight hair but not curly hair.
@@WeOnlySayHelloReal Raising the cuticle makes hair duller and harder to detangle. The whole point of conditioner is to help lay the cuticles down and lubricate the hair. Nobody should raise their cuticles on purpose. And products almost always coat the surface and almost never penetrate, penetrating hair is unnecessary and almost always a marketing gimmick. Conditioner coats the surface because the surface is where the friction and damage is occuring. In almost every formula, the only thing penetrating is the water.
Also a great tip based from my experience: If you drink enough water everyday and you keep your body hydrated it reflects onto your skin and hair health. I proved this to work because I used to have frizzy hair all my teenage life but it all got better when I started water therapy.
When I was younger My hair used to be very smooth, shiny and moisturized even some of my friends thought that I've always been doing my hair before going to school but it was naturally silk .. until I turned 11 years old.. I got Psoriasis on my scalp that damaged my hair ..( I'm 17 now ) now it's frizzy and super dry and when I look at the mirror i see those baby hairs flying in the air 😢😢 ... I tried applying oils but I never keep doing it continuously 🌚 which is sad .. my hair is suffering but my lazy self is watching in the corner .
Same! I used to have beautiful hair until I turned twelve, and then it started falling out due to stress. My hair was super thin and frizzy and I couldn't do anything about it. My hair looks way better now, but I know it won't be the same again.
@SallyNathania I have had acne for 15 years, I’ve never had any problem with hair oil affecting my acne. If you have oily skin along with your acne it means your skin is dry. Using face oils really help with acne (weird I know) but it made a huge difference in my skin. If you are worried about your hair/acne, try braiding your hair on days you don’t wash it. Hair will adjust to less washing. I used to wash my hair every 3 days, but I’ve been washing my hair once a week for years. It took about a month for my hair to adjust. Also the chemicals in your shampoo/conditioner can really impact your skin and acne, so washing your hair less often is better for your skin and hair
following K’s comment, don’t assume it don’t affect your face, we all have different genetics, my face gets acne when my hair is oily, anyone else’s could be different
From someone that lives in a very hot and human country: It's still possible to wash hair as little as once a week, but it takes time for the scalp to adjust and produce less natural oil. So for the first month or so after starting washing my hair, my head was so greasy and disgusting by the 3rd day, but now even after a week my hair looks fine. And when I say wash, I mean wash with shampoo. I shower and use some sort of conditioner almost every day.
I live in a hot and humid place too! Now I'm transitioning from washing it every 3 days to every 4 days. A thing that helps a lot is to do some hair styling on the days the hair is the most greasy ( with no heat of course). I usually braid it or make a bun. It really helps a lot, and it's fun to get to know new hairstyles to try out!
I think it's also important to note that the frequency of shampooing one's hair may be different on your place's climate. When I was in China shampooing every other day worked fine for me because the weather was cool. But when I went back to the Philippines and tried it, I actually had some type of fungal infection on my hair roots because the weather here is almost always very hot.
You are my favorite beauty/health blogger. I love how you make everything so simple, yet factual. Not just some random tips that everyone can Google and turn into a vlog.
Can you do a video on your favorite shampoos & conditioners? As well as what ingredients to avoid/look for. Maybe products for different hair/scalp types? My hair is physically damaged
I think a paraben and sulfate-free organic shampoo would be good for your hair, as well as using hair masks for damaged hair once or twice a week, maybe?
Hi ivana i agree with silicone and sulfate and mineral free, plus using fermented rice water. Soaking the rice to 2-3 days and placing it on a spray bottle. Since i have chemically damaged hair, it's super dry so I spray rice water to my hair everyday
HUGE help for my hair was actually using Johnson and Johnson’s baby shampoo. No harsh chemicals, very gentle on the scalp and hair... and body for that matter. If you notice yourself breaking out a lot on your shoulders or back or if you have a skin condition like KP (what I have) or eczema, you may be surprised how helpful reducing those harsh chemicals can be on the health of your skin. After all, that shampoo is getting washed away and most likely coming into contact with your skin.
The biggest thing that has helped my hair is not only using a paddle brush to detangle my hair, but also using a smoothing brush. I have really oily hair naturally, and I used to wash it almost every day. But I found using a soft-haired bristle brush distributes the oils that are normally on my scalp down to my ends, not only getting rid of some of the oils on my roots but also making my hair naturally sleek and shiny. I've gone from every day to every other and sometimes every three days. If you're like me and have thick, oily hair, I definitely recommend trying it out!
Also once in a week, oiling our hair is necessary. When I used to live in a hostel, I had to wash my hair with hard water because there was no option but now that I started living at home, soft water is like the most important thing. And when I started to like keep oil on my hair for 3-4 days a week, it grew longer and thicker! And I'm already blessed to have silky straight and smooth hair. And honestly I never experimented with my hair apart from cutting them so yeah, I already follow all the things she said. ☺

The case of water damage is really a thing to me. Once I was in an area where was much softer water and I was surprised that my hair was so much smoother than at home. I thought it was the shampoo I used but I continued to use it when I was back home and there was this frizziness dryness again.
I use to struggle with washing more hair every day because of an oily scalp too, until changed my shampoo to a non-toxic scalp clarifying one that has no harsh chemicals and build up ingredients. I know you mentioned chemical damage, and I wanted to highlight how crucial a non-toxic shampoo that is focused on scalp health is because that addresses the scalp and the overall health of your hair over time i.e. like soil for a garden is tended to to grow healthy flowers, tend to the soil to ensure beautiful flowers. With focus on shampooing with a great healthy shampoo I've minimized to washing once a week. Instead of using heavy deep conditioners, I've opted to oils before washing to honour scalp health and hair nourishment. A good one start with could be coconut oil because it's convenient or camellia oil which is used in traditional asian beauty and is perfect as a lightweight multi-functional nourishment for finer hair, it also feels really nice. :)
This video arrived at the right time when I've started being conscious of my hair health! Thank you for this and I always lovelove your creative examples and the way you share scientific processes that makes it so understandable!
As a mature woman, these practices are very important, especially when you dye your hair. I wash hair once a week and use dry shampoo in the mean time.
The most useful tip I heard was about that ph level in the water my friend have a big problem with eczema and that softner thing might be the solution for her so thank you for mentioning that 🙏🏻
Thank you for those simple yet important tips. There is something I want to add; as far as I know, it's not only the "hot" stuff that damages your hair. In order to preserve the healthiness of your hair, you're supposed to keep it at its natural temperature as much as possible. So, extremely cold or hot showers, and both cold and hot blow-drying can damage your hair. It is best to use lukewarm water while washing, and maybe switching between hot and cold during blow-drying can be better.
I wash my hair once a week, and it stays smelling good all week. I have very thick and full hair, it's wavy and curly. If I wash it everyday, it becomes drier... and it takes an entire day to dry, so it's not convenient at all to wash more than once a week. Also, I used to wash it every two days, and do everything wrong (from shampoo to heating) and oh boy, it was so much work for such bad results. I didn't know how cool my natural hair was. I thought it was just work, but turns out, if you LISTEN to your hair, you will learn what it wants, and it's gonna be way easier to take care of it!
Thanks for this! I have thick hair too and I was about to go for washing my hair 4 times a week (bcs I thought it will be much better to wash it as often as possible bcs my hair is too thick) but then I read your comment. Might consider washing it twice or once a week only
@@sAkUrA6309 You can adjust to your own needs, but washing once a week prevents water damage, shampoo damage and let the natural oils do their job for longer 🧡
@@sAkUrA6309 Just listen to your hair! If it doesn't get oily or itchy that fast then dont wash it until it does. If you wash it more often than you need to it will get greasy faster and damage your hair.

My Mom is a hairdresser so I've always followed all of those tips. I wash my hair once a week and focus the product only on the roots. I sometimes use dry shampoo on the 6th day when it's needed and some hair oil from time to time. I let my hair air dry as often as possible and never play with it while it's wet. I try to finish the wash with colder water to close up the cuticles and still... my hair has always been extremely frizzy and dry. I don't have damaged hair but still, it is such a pain to keep it looking good and I actually learned something a while ago that has completely changed my life. Brushing you hair is what makes it look as awful. It doesn't matter how well you take care of it, brushing it will always ruin the look. So now, I just rarely comb through the roots and that's it, my hair can finally be free. Also, since my hair really IS very dry, I use a hair mask instead of a conditioner, the ones from Garnier are really nice. Anyway, thanks for the video. I'm loving the diversity! 😍
Oh my God Liah you are such a life safer, i've been dealing with fridge hair becuase of the weather changes and new environment i now live in, and i've been taking this step by step that you recomended and my hair started to look nice, shinier and healthy again 💚💚
This is the best hair care video I have ever seen. It’s kind of long but worth every minute. My best tip, clean your brushes and combs!! Take the time to use tweezers or a metal pick tool, to get out any dust, lint, or spaghetti wrapped hair around brushes and combs to make them cause less friction. About every 3-6 months. It is well worth the hour it will take, I promise!!
Liah, I love you so much 💖 Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us, I feel truly lucky to have found your channel. You saved my face from acne. Love, from México!
I really admire your extensive research and the background and chemistry of things, and applying it to caring for your hair properly and sharing it with us!! Thank you so much!
That's definitely a good thing to do! Your hair ends don't get as greasy or dirty as your scalp so you don't need to apply as much shampoo to clean them, and when you only rince the roots, as you rince it off, it'll get to the hair ends and that's more than enough to clean them already
I've heard about "cleansing conditioners", they clean the hair but is not as damaging or harsh as shampoo! Leaves your hair clean but moisturized, something for you (or others who wash their hair everyday) to try out!:)
I trust her more compared to other content creators based on beauty and personal care to self especially to skin, hair and others. We truly need someone like this- a professional in her own forte. Glad I've found your channel ❣️🥳
tbh silicone free hair styling products are the way to go, they don’t build up as much (i use the shea moisture styling lotion) + for drying your hair: a hair dryer with a diffuser causes way less heat damage as it distributes the heat evenly
The application of coconut oil before taking a shower also restores damaged hair. I used to apply it 5 hrs or more before taking a shower and then applies lesser shampoo afterwards so that the oil will still stay and do it’s magic 😊
I actually have the habit that i don't comb my hair while it's still wet from shower since i feel like it breaks easily, and in my country it's very normal that people go out without drying their hair. Hair dryer is not a huge thing. You just let it air dry
I would recommend you to look up Nizoral shampoo, it helped my dandruff and zits You can also search Dr. Dray Nizoral on TH-cam she's a certified dermatologist she gives very helpful tips and evidence on scalp problem
since may i really suffer from extreme dandruff and hair loss and my scalp is often really oily. my doctor said it's due to stress i had 6 to 12 month ago (he could be right) and i should just wait. but i am not patient and tried l'oreal botanicals fresh care lavender and i have way less dandruff, fewer issues with oil and i only use it once a week. only the hair loss still bothers me.
Could it be that you might have scalp eczema? If you have very bad itching and you keep scratching your head cause of it, it can end up with hairloss and a lot of dandruff (I found out that I had scalp eczema and not dandruff after 6 years, and also have VERY BAD hairloss). I'd recommend maybe checking in with your doctor if this souns familiar. Otherwise, maybe you could try an apple cider vinegar wash, which can get rid of some oiliness, and also helps some people with dandruff! Personally I recently started using a DIY flaxseed gel + olive oil hair mask before every hair wash, because I saw a video of ''Alexandrasgirlytalk'' where she showed her bald spots, and how this mask got completely rid of it! It ended up getting rid of my dandruff, getting rid of about 80% of my eczema irritation, and because when the mask dries up after 2 hours your hair kinda feels like straw, it ended up helping my oiliness TREMENDOUSLY! The moment you step under the shower the gel dissapears so it also isn't damaging at all. If you have nothing to lose, you could check her video out, and she also has a video showing her bald spots, and maybe try it. It's very easy to make, and honestly a life saver to me. Also for hairloss, you could check out a product called Rogaine, apparently a lot of people love that for hairgrowth, even Dr.Dray an online dermatologist talked about how it works. Personally haven't tried it, since the product also says that if you stop using it the hairloss starts again, so I'm hoping the gel will help + vitamins + protein, but this could be something you could research if you've already tried everything else! Lots of luck, and I really hope you find what you need

Just like with skincare, I avoid sls in my shampoos. I also avoid non water soluble silicones because the extra build up in my head makes my scalp itch like crazy. I've noticed the skin on my scalp is very similar to the skin on my face. I've since ditched traditional dandruff shampoos and now use a shampoo with 3% salisylic acid as the active ingredient and it exfoliates my scalp, controls oil, and stopped the itchyness. C:
Can you please make a more detailed video on how to maintain a frizzy hair? IT WOULD HELP A LOT. Or just reply to me with more tips please :) You already helped me woth my acne problems so Im trusting you in this aswell!!! ♡♡♡
I use the curly hair method. Frizzy hair is due to lack of hydration. So I spray water on my hair and follow with some leave in conditioner or oil. This has really helped me, as mid week my hair gets frizzy too. x x
1.while drying always scrunch your hair with towel to soak the water water than creating friction 2. never wear towel turban after washing hairs this points can also be added to your helpful video i learned
With hair care videos I never know what to believe because the video will say one thing & then all the comments will be like "ACTUALLY, THAT'S NOT TRUE--!" so I think HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO LEARN ABOUT HAIR HEALTH IF EVERYONE IS LYING!? But this is the first hair video that actually made me feel reassured that I can DO SOMETHING to care for my hair without a secret chance I might also be destroying my hair.

And then it gets easier. Now (without ever intended to) my hair is not easily getting oily and I can shampoo once every 4 days. So good luck, u just need to trust on ur body. (this applies to windy days. boating, biking, etc)

Combing dry on curly hair is more damaging than wet hair.
Exactly. If I comb my hair dry it will snap off, but if I detangle gently with lots of conditioner and water I only have split ends after 8 months or so.
Hm yeah. I don't think she considered all hair types when she made this video.

Also handy for long straight hair! Prevents tangling and you don't get choked by your own hair haha
Could you go deeper in these oils please? My curls are so thirsty
@@catherinecarranza7224 a youtuber Bianca Renee has a video on it and she explains it perfectly!
Anisha Dsouza same problem here
You need to hydrate and moisturise your scalp. Most often you get greasy hair because your scalp is too dry and is overcompensating by producing even more oils.
Yesss I need this!
Omg yess pleasee
Omg sameee
Another tip is using a silk/satin pillow case or bonnet to prevent friction from tossing and turning in our sleep 😴

But I can't stand the oil on my hair. I'm also afraid it will make my acne worse.
You can use dry shampoos to soak up the excess oil and extend the time between washes.
Should never be using dry shampoos, so bad for your hair, and take away natural hair oils.. try using powder to soak up the oily in-between washes

Dry shampoo helps, i live in the phils so i can relate
From someone that lives in a very hot and human country: It's still possible to wash hair as little as once a week, but it takes time for the scalp to adjust and produce less natural oil. So for the first month or so after starting washing my hair, my head was so greasy and disgusting by the 3rd day, but now even after a week my hair looks fine.
And when I say wash, I mean wash with shampoo. I shower and use some sort of conditioner almost every day.

But when I went back to the Philippines and tried it, I actually had some type of fungal infection on my hair roots because the weather here is almost always very hot.

cut out sulfates, silicones and drying alcohols (benzyl, isopropyl, ...) and use a deep conditioner ones a week
You should watch green beauty or nappyFu. They may have tighter texture than you but they know what they are talking about
HUGE help for my hair was actually using Johnson and Johnson’s baby shampoo.
I weaned myself off of shampoo and I haven’t used it at all in at least 3 years and my hair is amazing. I preach all of this!

I have been washing my hair everyday with a shampoo since i was a kid. My hair fall has suddenly gone beyond control now. Thanks for all the advice!

Summary
Chemical damage- bleaching, dyeing, perms, colouring
Water damage- quality of water- hard water bad- tip if have vinegar rinse or water softener thing. soft water good, length of exposure long period of time is bad, don’t comb or style wet hair
Product damage- don’t shampoo two often extend and adjust days as much as you can. Only shampoo scalp, choose the most moisturising shampoo, use as less hair products as possible, brush hair before shower, clarifying shampoo/ foam shampoo every so often if needed
Physical shampoo- gently press out the water when towel drying, swap out towel drying for an old shirt, don’t tug or stretch hair
Heat damage lower- less long exposure to heat, no long hot showers, hair styling make sweet and short, invest in tools that will cause less damage
UV damage- avoid direct sun exposure as much as possible, wear hats etc
I tried putting coconut oil in my hair to where it's a little too oily 2 hours before I do shampoo my hair since it's so dry, be careful though it made my hair grow much faster than usual if you dont want that
Hmm that means it worked well! 😁 did you just apply it once or over a period of time? (E.g, weeks?)
@@ron5506 I did this for a little bit than over a month every two days even though I shouldn't have washed my hair that often, I still shower every two days but I only rinse it out with water every other time

Yes! Try to make the shampooing short and sweet too :)
Co-wash. Wash your hair with a conditioner or a co-wash labeled product. It's perfect.
That's definitely a good thing to do! Your hair ends don't get as greasy or dirty as your scalp so you don't need to apply as much shampoo to clean them, and when you only rince the roots, as you rince it off, it'll get to the hair ends and that's more than enough to clean them already

I love Liah soo much😭. She is so informative in her videos and does not waste time with useless intros! I love her videos, she’s one of my favourite youtubers
Keep going !!❤️
Thank you!
OMG, this is finally a video I found that helps me! My hair are naturally very volouminous, and I was looking for tips to reduce the volume.. I am visiting a hairdresser soon, but i wanted to look up how to keep my hair healthy till then..
When I was younger I struggled with my hair a lot (mostly because they were curly and volouminous) and cut some parts out myself, resulting my hair having a different length on each side and layer.. Wow..What a brilliant idea of mine...!
Well now I want to fix it, and after that keep it healthy.. This video helps do much! I can't put it in words, Thank you!
I just genuinely love your videos, since everything is so well explained with a little science and personal experience. I'm still considering buying a Dyson hairdryer, although it's a bit in the expensive side, but I really appreciate your opinion on the matter.
Keep up the good work! 😊

Best to first see a doctor to make sure it's not health related
Just like with skincare, I avoid sls in my shampoos. I also avoid non water soluble silicones because the extra build up in my head makes my scalp itch like crazy. I've noticed the skin on my scalp is very similar to the skin on my face. I've since ditched traditional dandruff shampoos and now use a shampoo with 3% salisylic acid as the active ingredient and it exfoliates my scalp, controls oil, and stopped the itchyness. C:
Rosa R. any recommendations for shampoo? my scalp seems to be the same.
right, what shampoo do you use?
What shampoo!!!
Can you please make a more detailed video on how to maintain a frizzy hair?
IT WOULD HELP A LOT. Or just reply to me with more tips please :)
You already helped me woth my acne problems so Im trusting you in this aswell!!! ♡♡♡
I use the curly hair method. Frizzy hair is due to lack of hydration. So I spray water on my hair and follow with some leave in conditioner or oil. This has really helped me, as mid week my hair gets frizzy too. x x
Chrissy Moss ok ill try this out :)) THANK YOU ♡

1.while drying always scrunch your hair with towel to soak the water water than creating friction
2. never wear towel turban after washing hairs
this points can also be added to your helpful video i learned
With hair care videos I never know what to believe because the video will say one thing & then all the comments will be like "ACTUALLY, THAT'S NOT TRUE--!" so I think HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO LEARN ABOUT HAIR HEALTH IF EVERYONE IS LYING!? But this is the first hair video that actually made me feel reassured that I can DO SOMETHING to care for my hair without a secret chance I might also be destroying my hair.
