(1) during the manufacturing and shipping process the strip is used to keep the shingles from sticking together, especially in hotter climates while the shingles tend to sit out on rooftops during the construction process. (2) it keeps the "buttons" free of dust and debris. -- unless its the adhesive strip some shingles rarely may come with, there is no reason to mess with it. If there is one hanging out that is visible, you may take it off, otherwise these are hidden during the install process and are of no concern.
cellophane on back of shingles never dissolved after 25years in Florida Sunshine.. Why is cellophane put on back over sealant adhesive strip if cellophane stops bonding of top shingle to lower shingle? Says on mfg package not to remove cellophane since it will dissolve and bond ?????!!!! Never in 40 years have I found any dissolved! Why is glue sealant put on if it serves no purpose? 40 years of different answer s from mfg and roofers. I removed them my roofs survived hurricanes other roof lost 30℅ of upper shingles .

Cellophane strip prevents bond.... They claimed it would " dissolve" .. Never dissolved even in Florida heat after decades. Crazy
