No different really from identifying a brand of amp from it's tonal characteristics, like how people recognise the Marshall and Les Paul sound. I think pickup makes have certain characteristics across the entire range regardless of style. If you have enough experience with a certain make, you'll recognise it when you hear it.
Rob could *absolutely* become a world class mix engineer/producer. His ears are extraordinary. Even Rabbea, who's ears are great too, looked speechless when Rob called the maple top :)

Richard Harrold he’s almost spot on with guitars he’s familiar with, like esp, prs, Gibson most of the time, difference in pickups, amps an pedals are where he struggles 😂
Wow, I can't believe Rob didn't nail the les paul sound right away. When he was talking about how he knew what it was through Rabea's playing, I was so dumbfounded when he said hollow, hahaha.
LOL yeah I thought the same...it was very distinctively "Les Paul" sounding...perhaps the easiest of the bunch to identify. I might have missed it as well to be fair...but the first note screamed LP to me anyway. :-)
how about a blindfold challenge where lee and chappers are blindfolded and all the others, pete, bea, josh etc. will play the same things and they have to guess who is playing :D
As long as Rob was listening to the guitar, rather than basing his opinion on Bea's playing, he was spot on. They're not true "wide range" pickups, as I understand... at least they don't follow the original Seth Lover Specs with the CuNiFe magnets.. but they're different. You do get that neat, creamy, singing midrange when you add a decent amount of gain. You can get a good Gary Moore tone with them.
The Gretsch Streamliner is definitely semi hollow. The Gretsch website calls it Center(sic)Block. I used to have one and it never sounded as good as this. I wonder why?
Interesting thing that Rob and Lee are still looking in eachothers direction when they are conversating, despite being blindfolded. Lee even turned to the camera to adress the youtube audience! Interesting stuff there!
For someone who's wracked with analysis paralysis over the next guitar he's (i.e., me) buying, with body style being a big factor, this was incredibly insightful. Brilliand idea and a lot of fun to watch (especially Rabea's faces when the guesses were spot on). Cheers!
I think a great idea for a blindfold would be to change it completely. Rabea plays different guitars mic'd up from a different room and rob and lee listen back on studio monitors or pa monitor!!! I would love to see that
This is great! I love these videos. I think doing a blindfold guess the guitar would be cool. Brand name, type of pickups, price point, etc. Lee vs. Chappers. See who can get the closest.
How about a contest for the viewers where the winner actually wins the gear or something ? Perhaps a five pedal/guitar blindfold challenge where the winner needs to correctly identify all ( whatever number or thing) of them?

Why no 335? Why no 175 or 330 for hollow bodies? These are the guitars people think of when you say “semi hollow” or “hollowbody electric”. I mean feel free to throw in whatever others too but these are the guitars that people have been playing for years and years on records so it is a shame to leave them out.
