SWFL Eagles 4-18-24. E23 Snaps a Branch; Soars; Mockingbirds, Shrikes & Jays Pester E23.

- Video combines ground and cam footage. Video opens with E23 on the inner branch being pestered by a mockingbird (s). E23 leaves, snaps a branch on the way out, and lands in the office oak. Bluejays are nesting; therefore, the jays pester E23. E23 ends up dropping their branch, and heads to the DSPS (drive side pond snag). The shrikes are nesting nearby, so now E23 is pestered by a shrike (s). E23 does some branch hopping, then heads back to the nest tree and the mockingbird. E23 moves from the attic to the outer end of the attic, then to the inner branch, then leaves. CamOps tracks E23 out. E23 rises to to make one soaring pass over the N pasture, then glides right back to the nest tree. Time stamps below, if interested. Click on any time stamp to advance to that part.

12:34. Back to ground view; E23 on the outer end of the attic, mockingbird pestering.

13:45. E23 leaves, mockingbird following, heads N, out of my view.
14:03. Cam view. E23 leaves, heads N, briefly rises for one short soaring passing over the N pasture, glides right back to the nest tree.

Such proud pests. Only problem is the eagle is far more territorially dominant if chose to be. Prefers fish instead of birds otherwise would become food & get ambushed instead of being able to pester. Yet instead of being territorial pest like the birds, holds the grace of a raptor and most of the time just ignores them knowing they can do nothing to move him if he/she chooses.

Sharon Shneyer, Thank you Androcat for another wonderful video and memory of E23 and this incredible eagle family. Tomorrow afternoon I am going to a memorial service being held by the hospice team that took care of my Aunt, the last direct link on my mother's side of the family. With the season ending, and the chats coming to a close it just makes things so much harder.
While there are some other nest's and Lady Hawk, does some wonderful things, it is not like the SWFEC site with enjoyable chats, incredible moderators and wonderful folks.
Our last homework assignment which Sam gave us on Friday, April 19, 2024 is;
If you could only pick ONE thing that you have learned this season that you did not know before about eagles what would that one thing be? I am still pondering that question which we will all present our answers on Monday nights chat. Also it is very wonderful when you come and join in, as you give us another perspective.
COULD YOU please perhaps clarify another question, that has been befuddling me if you know as I have received several different answers (I have been watching since Season 1).
I know what Ozzie died of, but did M15 have a fight with him or something?
I know that M15 has been a wonderful mate to both Harriet and now F23, but it leaves me wondering.

I am one of the few people who watch on a phone, which is currently my only Internet access. I use the magnifying lens, which makes a big difference, even when there are close-ups.
@ringdoorbell3223. YW. No fight was observed between M15 and Ozzie. That is a rumor that has persisted, but there has never been a witness or anyone who produced photos/videos of a fight. M15 was not the only male eagle vying for the territory. There are many eagles in this area. People who do not live here or observe these eagles locally make up stories that get shared on social media as fact, and are most often completely inaccurate. You can ask in the chat for correct information. A new thing I observed this season was F23’s habit of rinsing off food in the pond. 😁
Thanks for being there, always appreciate the combination of cam and your ground videos. Poor E getting pestered, as far as we know the eagles haven’t attacked their young ??!!
@heidihybicki3827. YW🙂. The small birds all have their own little chicks in the nest, or little fledglings. We cannot fault them for protecting their own babies. Eagles don’t specifically hunt little birds like that, too fast, not much to eat, waste of energy. Eagles will eat small birds if the opportunity arises. E12 got a small fledgling in the pasture. All birds of prey get pestered: eagles, owls, hawks…

@cataniamommaitalia87. That is one of the top reasons eagle are taken into care or perish. Power lines are a huge threat.

Awesome capture. Seems all the Eaglets, have experienced little birds teaching them a lesson. For E23 seems it a Mocking Bird being that pesty & E22 a Longerhead (typo sorry) which was awesome all the video& photos all have shared. As a very busy person, will you be able to include the cam views of (probably) F23 stealing food, which was on the nest, from E23 who then chases her and wrests it back from her (it seemed). That altercation occurred on a branch of a tree closer to the main road. This also happened on the 18th.🙂
