    Good call on getting the Alexi MM-04 booster installed, the midboost is essential for the Alexi sound. Don't be afraid to try different settings with the dipswitches. • @EclipseAtDusk
      @EclipseAtDusk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That pre-amp boost does A LOT as Ola says - it’s not really any different than putting an overdrive before the amp like many metal guitarists do, just slightly different.

    • @SteelSkin667
      @SteelSkin667 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be fair you can't really go wrong with a boosted HZ into a JVM, it's just a good combo. Although the JVM is a fairly late development in Alexi's career, he was using some fancy vintage rackmount stuff before that.

    • @Gloomshimmer
      @Gloomshimmer ปีที่แล้ว

      The HZ are quite nice an affordable pus, and theres to much gatekeeper mojo around boutique PUs. The HZ have a nice, not oversaturated distorted tones, but instead of emgs actives a usable cleantone. They handle distortion very good. But dont put to much focus on the pus. The cab is more interesting. Celestion greenback. Has more influence than the pickups on the whole sound.

    I guess the question is mainly which era Bodom, the US metal style Bodom or the old school, when you talk about his rigs. The old rig was much more in the 80's spirit. Custom Jackson RRs with JE-1000 preamp booster, rack with Lee Jackson GP-1000 and VHT or Engl power amp was common. The sound was rather unique, he was very inspired by Stone (the band of his later bandmate Roope Latvala) who played with those before Metaltronix heads. His (maybe first) Jackson RR was actually the guitar of Jiri Jalkanen from Stone. The preamp is like a Fender Concert, but people asked Lee Jackson for more gain so he added another preamp tube. It also has a wonderful mid shift knob similar to how JE-1000 has dip switches (well basically Musamaailma copied the design for MM-04 since Jackson didn't manufacture them anymore) which in tandem created that very juicy mid focused tone. Very percussive and saturated, squealy and prone to give feedback notes.
    This later rig was much more world tour friendly, the amp in one chassis instead of rack. With the old Jacksons you couldn't get a clean tone even, unless you had a toggle installed on the guitar. But the old rig beats the later rig by million miles in being unique and interesting. But of course it's the mid focus and his playing that is the key to make things sound like him.

    I sold my JVM for A Bogner Ecstasy. It was a good choice. But if I was to rebuy a head, it would be a JVM. Channel 3 orange and red were the most amazing saturated goodness, especially with my Les Paul. Underrated metal amp that can do every style. But the Bogner takes the gain staging options and the cutting clarity to a new level.

    No one can ever replace him.
    One of the best frontman, and a God in his guitar.

    As much as I love and admire Alexi, it was refreshing to hear one of their songs played as tightly as you did in the intro.

    I have a Alexi signature Emg on my Jackson Kevin Bond RR. Sounds amazing, both in studio and riggs.
    And yes .... EQ and boost. About scaloops ..... Have that on my Kramer RR from the 80's and a Invader pickup.

    Damn Ola...you really nailed the tone in that intro. Alexi is one of my guitar hero's and I will miss hearing new music from him. At least he put out a lot of quality music that I can still listen to. He will live on forever in the great music he wrote. RIP Alexi

    you definitely nailed it! obviously you said it is set to his settings but i swear there are a ton of videos with him shredding and nailing those riffs with less gain. obviously he was a master!

    I grew up listening to children of bodom and my buddy who just passed this last august would play all of their songs by heart on guitar when we would jam in our teenage years 15+ years ago. We loved COB more than almost any metal band and took to In Flames as well and Jason Becker and Gilbert and all that shit. But Downfall and Angels Don't Kill are my favorite COB songs and of course Everytime I DIE!!!! My buddy was a fanatical fan and he was a shredder. But yea my main group I got into most was actually At The Gates. Love me ATG, biggest guitar influence for me besides Tool

    My favorite of all time 🙏🏼 I have a big problem with ESP/LTD charging 1500+ USD for a “signature” guitar and they can’t even throw in the EMG HZ Alexi set (with the preamp, which is integral for his signature). It’s just bullshit to me. Pennies on the dollar for them.
    But for those who have passives and want that preamp sound- all you need is to EQ boost the 1.3k (or closest number on your EQ pedal) and then bump the output level up just a tad bit.
