  • This is the first video of my Breaking Down a Guitar Legend Series. Alexi Laiho was and still is a huge influence on my guitar playing, so it was a no brainer to pick him as the first guitar legend. Please subscribe, share, and let me know what other guitarists you would like to see featured in the series. Below are links to the clips that I used in this video.

The original Jackson RR he bought was formerly owned by Jiri Jalkanen, the guitarist of the thrash metal band Stone. And Roope Latvala played in Stone with Jiri in the 1980s, way before joining Waltari, Sinergy and COB eventually

I had pretty much stopped playing guitar other than just messing around a little bit until I heard children of bodom in the early 2000s and that reignited my passion for guitar playing and especially metal guitar playing. I was already a very good guitar player but just had slacked off and was used to playing Guns N’ Roses, Zeppelin and Hendrix. when his signature guitar came out in 2006 it only took me one month to save up and buy that guitar. It is the black and yellow LTD. Unfortunately I could not afford the ESP but I love that guitar with all my heart and would never trade it for anything. I met Alexis one time and the rest of the band several times and saw them perform eight times in person. Some of the best concerts I’ve ever been to. The year is 1999, the locations is France. In high school every one is talking about that Italian band that makes RPG metal (Rhapsody’s Symphony of Enchanted Land), or that other band with an opera singer ( Nightwish’s Oceanborn). Cradle of Filth’s Cruelty and the Beast is a favorite amongst the crowd even though people complain a lot about the battery sound quality. Then out of nowhere a new champion arrives, a band that is aggressive but also uses a lot classical music techniques and motifs. Children of Bodom’s Hatebreeder just slapped everyone in the face. I did have to swap the pickup out for a SD black winter since his signature pickup sounded too "nasally" for me, but that's just personal preference. You missed a very rare and special signature guitar of his, the LTD Alexi-600SE. It's the same as the pink one you showed but with one lil difference; the pink part on the body doesn't have any black in between.
There were only 200 of them made. I'm really lucky i managed to get my hands on one of them. :)

Alexi also played in the Punk-Trash band Kylähullut (all songs in Finnish language). If you thought COB partied hard...Both Alexi & that band's drummer passed away from alcohol-induced liver disease. Ouch! Check this shit-out, you'll recognized the guitar: Kylähullut - Paskiaiset (means something like 'effin idiot) th-cam.com/video/cMcnwXN-MOs/w-d-xo.html

Bums me out that he died of cirrhosis from drinking. Why didn’t he get help, for his depression and drinking? I think his lack of liberal education (college is free in Finland) didn’t do him any favors. His whole world was playing (a very good thing) but the context was the rock scene (not so good). I can think of so many great talents who died far too young because the world of music swallowed them. This is what capitalism does to its greats. Musicians deserve far better and should work together to demand a better world, but industry vampires like it this way. Kind of a microcosm of earthly human existence.
