- Unfortunately, we had a microphone issue, and the sound on the main video is TERRIBLE. I was able to clean it up a bit, but it's still a mess. My sincere apologies for the poor quality. If you speed playback, it does seem to help a bit! Granted, I talk quickly already...
CORRECTION - The mDesign Stackable Closet Storage Box is 32.4 x 18.4 x 18 cm (I have the wrong dimensions on the video! Thanks to those who pointed this out!

Pink foots are awesome! I have a juvenile now. Thanks for sharing! The clicking, etc, in the audio wasn’t bad at all!
I'm glad that the sound wasn't too annoying. And thank you!
I finally did it. I hit the point where I cant really add more Ts and had to choose my final orders. So I added Theraphosa apophysis as well as O violaceopes (dream T for me as an arboreal nerd) to cap it all off and celebrate 2 month anniversary as a keeper. Like I said before I have a ton of slings and I've gotten really adept at keeping moist substrate. I have a lot of free time besides work and Im still young so I figured might as well do this all while I can. It really wouldnt be possible without you. Ive watched an embarrassing amount of your videos and all your podcasts I could find. Ill be at 45 Ts when its all settled almost all slings and havent lost a single one! Just know your hard work is really appreciated by keepers like me. The wealth of knowledge presented so well and concise allowed me to take leaps instead of steps.
LOVE the apophysis...such cool spiders. My O. violaceopes just passed last year of old age. She was stunning. And I truly appreciate the kind words...thank you so much!
Can’t wait till my sling starts putting on some size, great video as always, Tom!
It shouldn't be too long. Thanks!
How big is yours a year later? I just picked up one today, 10/30/24. Maybe 1.5"
Another awesome video 📹 😍😍😍 beautiful spider and stunning colours WOW!!! Thank you Mr & Mrs Tom ❤️ 🙏🙏🙏
Thank YOU for watching, Susan Elizabeth!
@Tom Moran I have learned so much watching your videos, I have 2 top ppl I love watching because I learn the most from them and you are one and Dave (beasties) the other, so very grateful to you both!!! ❤️ wld be awesome if u two cld do a live together if possible matching up the time zones 🙏🙏🙏
Great looking enclosure ...... did I miss the name of it though? Sorry....
Thanks for another great video....😎👍👏👏👏👏🕷
Thank you! I thought I put a note in. They are sold under Reptile Growth 10 gallon enclosures.
Hello great video information and rehousing Tom
Thank you, Moon!
Nice collection Tom. I discovered this species (apophysis) 1990, in Puerto Ayacucho, Venezuela.
Thank you very much, Charles. And that's amazin!
Great vid, Tim! The crackles and pops weren't that discernable on my end. Came just in time since I have yet to rehouse the new birdeater I received. I'm not positive it's a L. parahybana since every picture I've seen of them don't have the two stripes on the tibia portions of the legs like the one I have. She's still a big girl though. Oh, and my G. porteri molted finally and shows more pink on her now. Before she was just a grayish sling. Hi, Billie! Getting good on the camera angles and you never get shacky.
Keep warm and safe, Winter isn't over yet and we're expecting some snow tonight here. Probably won't get but a dusting down in the valley but they're predicting about a foot in the higher elevations. Stay safe you two. Happy Valentines Day!
Hey, Linda! I'm glad, because they were terrible on my end. I'm so upset about it. And that's awesome with your G. porteri! Hopefully, my little ones start showing some color soon. Billie says hello...and thanks! :) Temps overy here have been creepily mild; I actually miss winter. haha Happy V Day!
This comment is in regards to your latest podcast as Spotify only lets you do a short note and I figured you'd see this here. Picked this one bc I love my theraphosa apophysis haha.
Tarantula anatomy, classes of urticating hairs, avic "morphs", dipluridae, how to deal with bad advice on boards, tarantula "nutrition" or the benefits of switching up feeders could be cool topics. When I first started I went through your podcast and listened to anything I thought would help at the time and then went back through to listen to the rest. I think if you do some more advanced topics beginners wouldn't mind seeing as they have so much content to look back on. This might sound weird but sometimes I put on old podcast episodes to fall asleep because I just love hearing about tarantulas and it's very calming. Give yourself credit where credit is due! You've helped many, many people and will for years to come even if you do decide to take a break. I link people to your podcasts all the time and they always seem to appreciate the great reliable information. :)
Hahaha Great choice! I have to rehouse one of my girls VERY soon (I'm actually going to rehouse a stirmi, blondi, and apophysis at the same time. :)). Thanks very much for the feedback. I will obviously continue to do the more advanced topics; its just that sometimes, I will be covering more basic ones as well. That way, I continue to hit both ends of it. And that's awesome about falling asleep to them! :) Thanks again!
My Theraphosa blondi 'Deebo' is doing fantastically. Huge thanks to you for your care guides. Up to a leggy 4.5 inches in a year even with my relatively cool temperatures. The growth rate is crazy and I'm so glad I gave them a shot.
The Theraphosa apophysis does look beautiful in that enclosure and I can second the comments loving that moss!
Is that Deebo from FRIDAY? hahaha Dude, I absolutely LOVE your names...seriously! Hope all is well with you!
@@TomsBigSpiders I just knew you'd get the reference! Yep. That's it! He's stolen my bike twice.
Thank youuuuuuuu for all your videos
Lots of love and respect and greetings from me in Amsterdam the Netherlands
Thank YOU for taking the time to comment! And hello from the US! :)
@@TomsBigSpiders you are very welcome
It's my pleasure to write in your comment section.
Lots of love to you and the family from me in Amsterdam the Netherlands
Gorgeous spiders ! Nice to see that those enclosures you enjoy lately have them in X large size. I wasn't bothered by the sound issues, btw. Glad to see that your T. apophysis didn't flick TOO much. I'd bet they're as bad as blondi and stirmi.
Stay safe and thanks for sharing :)
Hey, Luc! Yeah, that was an awesome find. I have two already. haha I'm glad the sound issues weren't terrible. I'm using a new mic, and it's been a PITA. haha Thank so much, bud...hope all is well!
thanks for the care info.....they're both beautiful
Thank you so much, Dee! Hope all is well!
I've been intimidated by the care requirements of Theraphosa species, but you present the info in such a way as to make me realize they're really not too different to care for than other Ts. Just the size and hair make it seem worse
And the hairs! 😱
Thank you so much, Madeline! I really appreciate that.
Thanks for another great upload, gonna watch the video now.
But i wanted to thank you for the Audio warning in the beginning, saves a lot of watchers equipment as these pops and what not do tend to destroy the freq range of speakers and u eventually get distortion.
Tip. Check ur cables and connectors , most of these pops are usually down to a loose cable, or specs of dust getting trapped in the connector itself, so try blowing on them in the future if this arises
You're most welcome, and thanks so much for the tip. I'm worried that it's the jack for my phone, but I will definitely try blowing it out in the future!
Gorgeous new setup Tom!!!
Thank you, Alexis!
Great video 👍 🇬🇧
Thank you, Wayne!
Thanks for the great video! I'll be rehoming my T.apophysis soon. My girl's always kicking hairs also.
Thank you for watching! And I hope that things go well and hair-free!
Moving back watching this big spider waiting for the little hairs to fly! Creepy!
Luckily, she only kicked once. :)
Wow! B&B ; big and beautiful! 🕷❣❣❣🕷
Thank you!
Fantastic video as usual Tom, and a beautiful species of spider 🕷 featured and definitely worth having.
Thanks so much, George! :) Hope all is well!
Well, that was pretty easy for a Theraphosa rehousing although She kicked a bit. Nice Setup too👍
Hey, Mike! Yeah, I think that went quite well! :) Thank you!
Just fed mines today, awesome set-up great video Tom
That's awesome, Nick! Thanks so much, bud!
Awesome enclosure... THATS A HUGE SPIDER!!! I'm definitely not there yet. My biggest T rn is like 4" and I can't get over how big it is sometimes. I've got an L.P. that is still a timy sling..
Hello! Yeah, I'm really digging these enclosures. And I'll always be impressed by the size of the larger ones. I have two T. blondi females that are around 9", and I'm in awe. :)
@@TomsBigSpiders I'd be frozen if I saw a spider that big. I just couldn't take care of it. I hope through time, my lil L.P. will learn me on the big spoods.
L.O.G shirt and a Theraphosa, sweet!
Great rehouse Tom, always nice to see these. Your videos are the only ones I can show to the s.o as I don't want her to be more freaked out about my rehousings at home than she already is, lol.
Do you get your leaf litter from online too? I've always wanted to but never got around to it.
I always use one cork bark and a starter burrow/hole so they have two choices, but I think this way should be the way to go for the adults. I've had some with one that don't even use the one, so this way might be better. So thank you, using this as motivation to buy more cork bark. Plus it's nice when rehousing too. Anyway enough rambling from me now.😅
I recently listened to your award episode of the podcast. I really hope you bring it back next january!
Thank you so much, Fallon! I will definitely do it again next year. :)
Thank you Tom !!! As I mentioned before , I just got two of these three days ago from Fear Not . Male and female . About three inches . In a few years I'm gonna burn up your comments asking for pairing advice . Be forewarned !!
Hahaha I'll be waiting! :)
Ooh I do like that size enclosure. Off to Amazon I go to get my A.Geniculata one of those 🤣
Ha, that's awesome! Don't buy them all, though...I need more. ;)
A STUNNING T there mate cant wait for mine to grow
It shouldn't be too long for you. :)
@@TomsBigSpiders exactly they almost double in size each molt lol
Great video as always
Thank you Chantal! I hope all is well!
Thanks Tom . Love an update on these mine is only 3 inches but it's so nice to see how yours are progressing.I don't know if they become more kicjy as they get older but mine seems to have calmed down alot since i got it but i do open the enclosure every night to air it out a bit . Yay beeing said it only has two movement modes fast and jerky or slow and half threat pose.
A very v strange but loverball spider.
You're most welcome! And mine seem to change temperament with every molt. They are both a bit kicky now. haha
amazing creatures, all the best tom!
Thank you so much. They really are!
Hey Tom n Billie 👋 glad you managed to get the 10 gallon. I thought it would be perfect for a Theraphosa sp so good to see them used for one , it's also nice to see an alternative to the tubs ppl normally use for them , nothing wrong with tubs but if you have any Theraphosa really you want to see it and i am yet to find a clear tub they're always milky to some extent.
I am with you Theraphosa are definitely anything but boring brown spiders, my partner has all 3 and non of them are plain brown , fiery red heads all the way 😆 great vid as always thank you Tom & Billie. ( Billie to seen as she always records your vids, she deserves credit aswell, i just hope i spelt her name right 😊)
Thanks for the heads up, Charlene! I was SO excited when I found these on Amazon. I plan on buying many more. And that's so true...I'm finding that I want to SEE my big ones more. And you definitely spelled it correctly...she says thanks! She does not get enough credit, that's for sure. Thanks again!
Great video Tom and I love these big beasts. A lot of spider for your buck. I feel I have to point out your measurements of the mdesign enclosures . I use these a lot and am pleased with them as they’re so versatile . I think you underestimated the sizes in cm. I am the same converting to inches but just wanted to point it out . All the best buddy and stay well.
Hey, bud! Yup, I totally used the wrong number on that. Thank you so much for the heads up!!!
I just got my first one today, 10/30/24. This is so awesome!! I went to get some crickets for my wife's leopard gecko and i always stop and look at the T's. They only have brachies but not today! I hate that i got it at a chain store but there it was. I wasn't passing it up for anything. Looks to be about 1.5" maybe 2"
Hello, Anthony! What a great find in a chain store...wow!
@@TomsBigSpiders the best part is they just got it that morning. They didn't even have a price on it yet. It just had an R on the label for rare.
Barbarous! 🤘
Damn right, bud! haha
I found my two T. apophysis don’t really like burrows for some reason and prefer to hang out in the open. They have had premade ones from sling to juvenile to their current setups but they never used them or made their own. We’ll see if that changes once they hit their full grown adult size. Great video as always!
Maybe yours just won't take to burrowing. As long as they aren't big hair kickers, at least you'll get to see them more!
Hey Tom great rehouse,I've got a sling who keeps going in death curl so I put her in a ICU kitchen roll and a water dish, then she picks back up and does fine, not sure why this is happening.
Hi, James! Oh no! Sounds like a dehydration issue to me. Maybe leave it there for a bit and, when it perks up a bit, offer it prekilled prey? That's what I've done with some success when that happens to any of mine. If you want to update me, leave a brand new comment so that I see it much more quickly! Good luck!
Hi Tom, I think the conversion from inches to centimeters is wrong at 5:03 of the video. 12.75" x 7.25" x 7" equals 30.48cm x 18.41cm x 17.78cm. I use the same explosion proof enclosures here in Spain haha (bought on Amazon). Nice rehouse btw!!
Thank you! Yeah, I totally screwed up and used the wrong numbers. And they are in Spain, too? Great to hear! Thank you!!!
My t. Apophysis is such a skittish little guy. It probably has another molt before it gets to that size.
Mine seem to go back and forth from being more calm to super skittish.
Great video as always! I just wanted to let you know it's been a while since I sent you an email for a question I had (I put TH-cam, in the title like you asked), sorry to be annoying with that, I could just post the question here, but I had attached videos in my email that might help you help me. Thanks again!
Hello, Audriclabonte! I DID respond to that one; could it have ended up in your bulk?
Definitely gonna have to invest in some these tanks for sure
I'm loving them so far.
@@TomsBigSpiders after seeing them here so much and the sizes look good as well cause some the Amazon stuff well we all know how that is might get a good one might get a dollhouse size one lmao
Mine is exactly this size right now. A little while ago she exhibited a crazy behavior. I was doing enclosure maintenance and I needed to move her. I was moving her a long with a paint brush and she jumped on the paint brush, wrapped her legs around it and bit it. It was so crazy. I have never seen anything like that before!
Yikes! Now that's impressive. That'll certainly get the blood pumping. haha
Some moss I've found good to use u can get in craft section at Walmart and is real moss soaks up water nicely and the isopods love it to
Great tip...I'll check that out! Thanks!
@@TomsBigSpiders on the package of moss there's like 4 or 5 different kinds u can get from the company that sells em each kind is different if I still have e the package I'll get pic n send one to ya
I can;' believe how big and beautiful they are! Their abdomen seems to be shaped a little different or is it just because they're big?
They really are stunning spiders. And I'm really not sure!
I've heard the material the top is made of referred to as "Perf". As in perforated aluminum.
Ahhhhh...that makes perfect sense, Terry! Thank you!
Tom, I love your videos. I've just gotten into the hobby so I'm always keeping an eye out for enclosures and supplies. Do you have links for the enclosures in this video?
Welcome to the hobby, Jeffrey (and thanks for the kind words!) ! Here you go: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09MQBB6CP/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Yesssss this has been one I've wanted see for some time they have an outragious feeding response just awesome never seen a t jump for food but these will lol as I'm raising 2 of these although males unfortunately but still fun watching thrm.grow they're almost hand sized atm and omg got a few hairs from 1 one my arm and nothing like I've felt b4 started a burning sensation almost like my arm was under heat and then a bit later started itching like hell
Hey, Eric! Man, a lot of folks have commented that the hairs are really bad. Fingers crossed that I don't experience that any time soon.
@@TomsBigSpiders ya fingers eyes n toes crossed cause that will ruin ur night and the itching comes n goes its like wtf haven't had the big stirmi kick hairs yet knock on glass to save my ass as I've heard those n blondi to the worst of the worst
oOoOO very pretty 😍🥰 I want to one!!
Thank you!
Hey Tom I think you are on to something with the 2 heights and 2 burrows. I just rehoused my h pulchripes with 2 pieces of cork bark and 2 starter burrows and he/ she dug them both out.
Hey, Cody! That's awesome! I'm curious to see how this goes moving ahead. :)
I did get the Same encloser after i saw your video for my t.a. There is a lot of top ventilation. Should i close the top ventilation so That there is only Cross Ventilation left for humidity ? Love your Channel by the way :)
Hi, Janos...great question! I haven't covered any of it yet, but I may when winter rolls around. It can get quite dry up here with the heat running, and the ventilated tops can almost be too much. If I do, I usually uses something like this: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B086G546X3/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_8?smid=A330SW4YE3KV7X&th=1 It's thinner plastic for poster frames, and it can be cut with a good pair of scissors.
@@TomsBigSpiders thx for your answer ! :) keep its up with the great videos :)
Hello Tom, i see that you are not using hydroballs on the moiser dependend tarantula, did you have Bad experience with it or what is your opinion of it ? Have a nice day and thx for the videos:)
Hey, Janos! I actually covered this recently in a podcast. I honestly haven't needed a drainage layer, although I've tried it in a few enclosures and have been experimenting a bit with them. There's NOTHING wrong with using drainage layers or the clay balls for folks who use them!
@@TomsBigSpiders thx for your answer i See if i can find That Podcast :)
Nice!
Thanks!
Interesting video. I saw one today at the store (ofc breeding).
Is the Apophysis same size as a Blondi or larger? Smaller? Both females ofc.
Thanks in advance :) I'm very split
The largest spider I've ever seen a photo of was a mature male T. aphophysis. They are leggier, but some thing that they can have larger legspans than the stirmi or blondi. All three are comparable.
@@TomsBigSpidersThat's quiet interesting.
Usually I would expect the female to be larger than the male.
Also length wise.
@@justaemptymall I'm just saying that the largest specimen I ever saw was a male. I'm assuming females could get as large or even larger.
Thank you :) I will see what my Theraposa Apophysis reaches. Currently the gender is unknown ^^@@TomsBigSpiders
Hi Tom. Love your videos and this set up. I’ve just acquired my first apophysis female around 16cm, and wanted to ask you, how do you tell when they go into pre molt. I’ve been told they don’t display the black skin bald patch like other new worlds? I would appreciate your advice and expertise in this species. 👍
Hey, Stuart! Congrats! And it depends if they have been kicking hairs. If they have a bald patch, it does darken up a bit. Mine will also get quite bulbous abdomens when they are in premolt. They will also usually stop eating for a bit.
@@TomsBigSpiders hey Tom. Thanks so much! She has eaten a lot and is rather fat. Hasn’t kicked much hair off and abdomen is darkening a little, but she is not eating at the moment. In terms of the substrate, should it be kept a little moist at all times, or is it okay if it dries a bit and then I give the substrate a little water once a week or so. Is misting the substrate a bit okay or should there be a drier spot in the enclosure and moister areas in other parts? I would hate to overwater the enclosure and be too moist.
Isn't T. stirmi the most heavily build with largest carapace and fangs?
Supposedly, the T. stirmi is beefier overall.
Why don’t you get the terra fauna from bio dude for the moisture dependent sp?
That size enclosure I can down with, very nice size. Most of the time they’re just not quite deep enough
Ummmm...I don't know? haha He designed this stuff for tarantulas, and I've been using it for several years now. I like that it does well both dry or moist. Yeah, I'm LOVING the extra depth. Thank you!
@@TomsBigSpiders I was a die hard repti soil user for years then I got crested geckos and ordered the bio active kit for them. It came with the terra fauna and I like it so much I bought a 32 qt bag for my t’s. It doesn’t seem to compact as badly and seems to be holding moisture very well. Just a thought
Do you know what's the reason behind the species' name? Apophysis is used in medical lingo to refer to processes as in protuberances (like the transverse process in a vertebra) but I don't see how that applies to these spiders
That's a great question; I honestly don't get how that applies to this species. Great point!
@@TomsBigSpiders I should've googled better before bothering you. Here's the answer: "The male T. apophysis has tibial apophyses (projections) - hence the species name." So it seems they got their name due to the presence of tibial hooks in males
What is your opinion in general of someone starting the hobby with old world? If someone isn't generally interested at all with new world?
Hey, Angel! Well, I think that it really depends on the individual. I think that it's a heck of a lot easier to learn basic tarantula care (especially rehousings) starting with a more forgiving beginners species. However, many folks can jump right in with old worlds with no issue what so every. The trick is to be prepared and to REALLY spend a lot of time watching good rehousings...and some bad ones to try to identify where things went wrong. I hope that helps...good luck! :)
I have a male apophysis and blondi, then I have females for both as well hoping to have 2 successful breeding projects soon
Hey, bud! Man, definitely keep me update on that. And if you can, record it. I want to see that! haha Hope all is well, bud!
Hey Tom I need your advice I forgot who I used to buy and order T’s from off line it was same girl you used I keep thinking Angie’s tarantulas can you reply abd give me some companies that ship up north we’re we live like you
Hi, Joe! I've used Fear Not Tarantulas, Swift's Invertebrates, Pinchers and Pokies, and Tom Patterson without issue.
I hate the hairs on mine, it seems to be the only one that really irritates me. All my others are no problem but when I mess with her oh my God
So far, I haven't been bothered too much by these...Xenesthis and Lasiodora are a different story, though.
I’ve sent you pictures of a mature male apophysis right? They have a lot of purple, I gave my male to Tanya hoping for some babies soon
Yes...it's stunning! I just love giant purple spiders. haha
I got haired right in the face once because of my own mistake by a big Stirmi. Felt like a really bad sunburn 😕
That sounds very unpleasant! Yikes!
@Tom Moran I learned a valuable lesson though and gained a healthy respect for urticating hairs lol
Hey Tom. My A Seemanni likes to burrow quite a bit and because she’s at the bottom of her enclosure, her fangs seem to be scraping the plastic of the enclosure. It makes a squeaking sound. From the looks of it, she seems unaffected and continues burrowing like normal, but is this something I should be concerned about? Is there a way to prevent damage to her fangs? Thank you!
Hello! I would suspect that she would eventually stop trying to carve through the plastic of her enclosure. She shouldn't be able to damage them unless she works them into vent holes.
Do they burrow as slings?
They dig from slings right on through adulthood.
I have 4 of these "big brown" spiders. Two apophysis females and a T stirmi pair. I personally don't see the appeal and loathe the hairs. But I know people are crazy for these things which is why I bought them. For resale. I've sold one of the apophysis females but have yet to find someone to take the others who doesn't want something for nothing. I will say I'm fascinated by their size but that's it. As always great video. Thanks for sharing
Hey, to each his or her own, bud! haha I adore all of my Theraphosa, and find that many people pass them up for being boring and brown. Like you said, I think that the sheer size has a lot to do with the appeal. Hope all is well!
I just got my 12th T. I got a female juvenile pink toe. I named her Junie. Wanted to get something special for my 12 T for my 30th birthday. She is so pretty. Really lucked out cause ALL 12 T,s are female
Awwww...that's awesome. Congrats!
I thought the males get only 5-6 inches
My buddy's male was over 11". They definitely get larger than 5-6.
@TomsBigSpiders oh ok cool thank u
$75 is not bad for that size!
Hey, Erik! Not bad at all! I'm quite pleased with these things. haha
You don't feed them birds, do you?
No, never. "Birdeater" is a misnomer. Most of them don't really eat birds.
Tom, unless I'm youtubially-challenged, you have nothing on your channel re: Stromatopelma calceatum. This horrifies me. I cried bitterly, and will be seeking therapy.
Shhhhhhhhh...Brian! Keep it down, man! If people find out that I've never kept one, I will lose ALL of my credibility in the hobby. If you keep this hush hush, I will get one soon. Deal? :)
