Charlie Rose and Thomas Friedman - truly, truly, truly the two best people, in the world, to understand the multi-facets, and tremendous number of nuisances, in our world!
    ------
And in a truly balanced, and center-thrusted, manner!
    -----
I could listen to Charlie and Thomas talk for hours! For hours!
    ----
    I love these guys!
    -----
If only the leaders in our world - elected; governmental; business; educational; and non-profit - would earnestly and meaningfully listen to their wisdom; breadth; comprehensiveness; and yet detailed analysis and assessments!

Overall, I think Rose, personal foibles and moral shortcomings aside, did solid work on his former show on PBS even if he could , at times, be verbose. I don’t know what Friedman is talking about, a ceasefire on or before October 7th, because inside of this Apartheid State of Israel, more Palestinians had been killed in the West Bank than any other year of the occupation, so I don’t know WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT, but I had tweeted, ‘Why REVENGE’ the week before October 7th. Because the word REVENGE had been scrawled on a Palestinian home that settlers had destroyed in the West Bank, just within a week before OCT 7th.

Friedman is a dual citizen and a settler (owns property in Israel) so his blindspot re The Occupation is willful ignorance. Nowhere did he admit the IDF has been shooting their own people according to the Napoleon directive. Charlie Rose's gentle line of questioning rather anemic with no hard questions (regional instability, 2000 lbs dropped on civilians, ethnic cleansing, UNSC allegations).

Thomas skipped the egregiously brutal occupation and all international law protecting civilians -- including the Fourth Geneva Convention, the UN Charter, The U.N. Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and more. One of many key aspects included in the above is the legal right of the Palestinians to resist, even violently, Israel's horrific occupation. Tens of thousands of civilians, including thousands of babies, blown to bits or buried alive by hundreds of U.S. 2,000-pound bombs doesn't seem to bother him much, if at all. Which specific actions, specifically, are Palestinians justified in doing in order to improve their economic, political, and religious situation?
Are they justified in protesting in front of embassies? Are they justified in organizing international boycotts of Israeli products? Are they justified in killing Israeli soldiers? Are they justified in taking Israeli soldiers prisoner? Are they justified in killing Israeli civilians? Are they justified in raping? Are they justified in kidnapping Israeli children?

If Palestinian, you can be held without charge for years and years, and they simply don’t level charges, they simply sentence you to judicial imprisonment in six months time allocations, which are legal under the Occupation. Now they’re stripping men and boys, and we can see the wounds on their hands, from the plastic restraints, and they’re tortured. 20,000 killed vs 1200 killed, and google search each year that GAZA faced slaughter. One of the most amazing things about this war is that while Arab governments are hoping Israel wins this war American leftists want them to lose it. Really makes me think about the recent statements made by the UAE’s foreign minister in which he was pleading with westerners to stop thinking they understand Islamic terrorists better than those living in the Middle East do. In terms of the Palestinians, what you’re calling for would GUARANTEE that many more generations of Palestinians would needlessly suffer. Hamas has billions upon billions. They deliberately force their people into abject poverty with the only pathway to escape it is by killing people on behalf of Hamas. If at the end of this Hamas still governs in Gaza then nobody is going to help rebuild and security measures will tighten. Israel and Egypt will have the support of 90% of the world in this endeavor. The fact that this reality is obvious to any semi-intelligent person whose spent time objectively trying to understand this conflict tells me that you really just hate the Israelis and don’t give a fuck about the Palestinians. Otherwise, you would speak out on the “Jim Crow” type laws that Palestinians in Lebanon and Jordan suffer under as well as the mass slaughter of hundreds of thousands of them in Syria. You didn’t though. You’re just blindly blaming Israel for everything with absolutely no concern for the fact that if you get what you want in this conflict the citizens of Gaza will suffer like they never have before and that suffering will never end because you insist Hamas be able to remain in power. I’m convinced that if people like you weren’t so vocal this conflict would’ve ended decades ago and am absolutely positive that infinitely fewer people on both sides would be killed. Yet, here you are advocating for the same lunacy that hasn’t worked at any point in the last 80 fucking years. At some point it’d be fantastic if you lot started thinking logically instead of being governed entirely by blind emotion. You ideas don’t work. Your ideas consistently make the situation worse. Humble yourself and embrace reality.

The Palestinians have been offered a state repeatedly but their Arab neighbors decided they'd rather wait so that terrorism could do it's dastardly work. As usual, the Arabs and Palestinian Arabs miscalculated and now there is little support in Israel for a two-state solution. Why? Because groups like Hamas or the PLO always end up taking over Palestinian governance. In 1970, they even tried to take over Jordan and assassinated the Jordanian Prime Minister. A few years before a Palestinian assassinated Robert F. Kennedy. They are sick and deranged people and they were that way before the Jews arrived. Arab internecine wars and assassinations were common. The arrival of the Jews gave them something to hate in common.

    What was Hamas’ plan?
Mr. Freidman, the plan is obvious. By now you should understand that terrorism is a particular type of war, and that the purpose of war, including terrorism, is to induce a decisive political result.
I strongly suggest that you read (or re-read) the late David Fromkin’s July 1975 Foreign Affairs article (“The Strategy of Terrorism”, pp 683-698). That is as lucid an explanation of how terrorism produces a political outcome as I can find. This essay was included in Foreign Affairs’ 75th anniversary compendium of its most important and influential articles. The editors of Foreign Affairs obviously thought that this is an important and relevant article that should not be forgotten.
Hamas’ 7 October 2023 terrorist attack was a classic terrorism trap and Binyamin Netanyahu foolishly drove Israel straight into that trap. Joe Biden did likewise for the United States. Both Israel and the United States are going to suffer greatly and lose stature for failing to recognize this obvious and avoidable trap.

Thomas Friedman knows Hebrew and Arabic, has a Master's degree in Middle Eastern Studies from Oxford, has been a bureau chief or Middle East correspondent for the New York Times since the Lebanon Civil War, and has won a National Book Award and two of his three Pulitzers for his coverage of the Middle East. I'm pretty sure he understands a thing or two about the motivations of Hamas and also of terrorists in general. E.g., note what he says at time mark (11:07).
In any case, his question at (6:36), "What was [Hamas's] plan?", was a rhetorical one, rhetorical in that it's posed from the perspective of non-Hamas Gazans. Friedman's point is that Gazans, when given an opportunity to survey the damage wrought by Israel, will be, as most human beings in their situation would be, ambivalent at best but outraged more likely at the consequences of Hamas's actions on Oct. 7. Friedman's point is that Israel's strategy should be to sow division in Gaza's power structure and to empower moderates by taking Israel out of the Gaza spotlight and removing the unifying force of an external threat.
As for America's involvement in Israel since Oct. 7, Yair Rosenberg of the The Atlantic has written an opinion piece that might interest you. It's dated December 15 and suggests that Biden's support for Israel, far from gung ho and gulled, has been qualified and tactical. The gist seems to be "The U.S. should keep its friends close, its enemies closer, and Israel closest of all." Right or wrong, the article is worth a look, I think.

I have been reading Mr. Freidman’s OpEds in the New York Times for 26 years. I even read a few of his books and watched him on Charlie Rose’s PBS programs. I used to think that he knew what he was talking about, but it has become painfully obvious that he does not.
If the Palestinians wanted to get rid of Hamas, they would have done so a long time ago. All they had to do was rat them out to the Mossad and Bibi would have taken care of the rest. But the Palestinians support Hamas and will continue to support Hamas no matter what happens because Hamas is the only political entity that is still vigorously fighting for the Palestinian cause. The Palestinians will NEVER abandon Hamas because there is no better alternative and the Israeli government refuses to give them any hope.
After Arafat died, the Israelis co-opted Fatah and the PLO such that those two have become Israel’s capo and are totally discredited. Mahmoud Abbas is an Israeli stooge. Neither the PLO nor Fatah will rule the Palestinians EVER again. Mr. Freidman doesn’t understand that.
Hamas’ “plan” was to get the Netanyahu government to abominably and odiously over-react to their 7 October attack such that global public opinion would universally and permanently turn against Israel. More specifically, Hamas sought to demonstrate unequivocally to the entire world that Israel is no longer the social democratic state that it once was in the 1970s: Israel is now a racist, apartheid state with the Palestinian Arabs relegated to a permanent underclass to be openly exploited, despised and dispossessed by the Jewish ruling class. It would appear that Hamas’ plan has wildly succeeded. Again, Mr. Freidman does not seem to grasp that important fact.
(Actually I suspect that Bibi was looking for an excuse to ethnically cleanse Palestine because if he solves the “Palestinian problem”, his political and legal problems would vanish instantly.)
Furthermore, everyone (except Mr. Freidman) knows that if Israel is allowed to continue, it will attempt to conquer southern Lebanon in order to gain control over the vast water resources of the Litani River.
At best, this will result in a regional war with Israel getting destroyed by Hizbullah, Iran, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. If the US attacks Iran, then Russia and China will enter the war to preserve their access to Middle Eastern energy resources and commercial shipping transit (i.e. Belt and Road initiative) via the Suez canal. Again, Mr. Freidman doesn’t seem to understand that.
For Israel, this war is not about Hamas or even revenge: It is about expelling and/or exterminating all remaining Palestinians from “Greater Israel.” Unfortunately, it also would mean World War 3.

Yes, I have been wondering if CR would find a place given this vast internet/social media world we live in. His personal decisions cost him a prestigious program, a program that contributed to the public discourse in important ways. Mr. Rose has paid a price for his choices. He was publicly shamed and punished. That seems to be a cost that Americans wanted to see. It is however, part of the Christian ethic to allow a person to be forgiven and to contribute to society. We are not living in a Puritan nation. Frankly, the Founding Fathers rejected the Puritan ways and values, finding them too narrow, even draconian in instances. There is no need to live as Puritans. We are a nation that moves forward. We are a nation that progresses. It is therefore, good to see Mr. Rose is moving forward. This conversation with Thomas Friedman is emblematic of the contribution Mr. Rose can make. These are unsetting times; on both the domestic front and on the international stage. If the US and the west does not realize this and starts to compromise, also ideologically, in order to keep their status and influence, they will go down the hard way. We have seen this in history over and over again in the rise and fall of great powers. So often they fall deep, and pull the whole world into desaster, because they don't realize soon enough that they are not as powerful anymore as they thought they are.

According to the Genocide Convention, genocide is a crime that can take place both in time of war as well as in time of peace. The definition of the crime of genocide, as set out in the Convention, has been widely adopted at both national and international levels, including in the 1998 Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC). Learn more about the definition of the crime of genocide.
Importantly, the Convention establishes on State Parties the obligation to take measures to prevent and to punish the crime of genocide, including by enacting relevant legislation and punishing perpetrators, “whether they are constitutionally responsible rulers, public officials or private individuals” (Article IV). That obligation, in addition to the prohibition not to commit genocide, have been considered as norms of international customary law and therefore, binding on all States, whether or not they have ratified the Genocide Convention.

Mr. Friedmans paints a logical picture and sensible approach at first blush. But the approach of withdrawing to see how the Gazans react to Hamas is a a highly speculative gamble given that Hamas has all the guns and controls the government. It’s a particularly risky gamble for Israelis given that Gaza is on their border and Hamas has vowed to continue the attacks whenever it can. If Mr. Friedman’s children lived on a Kibbutz bordering Gaza, would he suggest this?
After 100 years of Arab attacks on Jews in Israel and multiple rejections of a 2 state solution by the Arabs in the area, maybe it’s time to recognize that it is not possible unless and until the Palestinians no longer hate Jews. But from their actions, it appears to be in their DNA. So maybe the right wing Israelis are right, that the best solution is to expel their sworn enemies from Gaza and the West Bank? 100+ years of Palestinian Arab attacks on Israel and rejection of multiple offers of 2 states including the Peel Commission recommendation of 80% of the land for the Arabs and 20% for the Jews certainly supports this conclusion.
As for World opinion and pressure, once the result is accomplished, likely the world will quickly forget like it has with Assad killing 500,000 Syrian Muslims in his own country. The rest of the Arab states are now normalizing relations with Assad. The rest of the world is doing nothing. Russia is bombing civilian targets in Ukraine. Where is the condemnation? Much of the non Western world including India has not missed a beat in continuing to trade with Russia.
If I’m living in Israel now, there is no way I am going to allow a militarily independent Palestinian state on my border now or until the Palestinians somehow convince me, not Thomas Friedman, that they no longer hate us.

Are we forgetting that Thomas is well known to have said that if "only" Palestinians could use peaceful resistance by marching to israel, they would be met by young Israelis with flowers who support them? Here is the answer:Palestinians did exactly that and the results were a violent repression by israel where Palestinians were shot and killed and some were shot on the knees by Israeli soldiers. Talk about peaceful resistance!!!
Thomas was a total let down in this interview but a bigger disappointment was Charlie's indifference to his nitpicking only highlighting actions where Israeli failures could be countered by HAMAS failures and really glossing over grave misconduct by israel where israel has no counter for it's many unmatched violations. For example Thomas talks about HAMAS violating a ceasefire which existed but he somehow forgets that israel had killed over 150 Palestinians pre 10/7, and settler violence had increased as well as settlement expansions, now, how is that upholding a ceasefire?
Thomas ran a soft on israel narrative and totally ignoring the fact that israel is beyond a rogue state, israel would be the most sanctioned entity in the world because of it's actions, israel has a human rights abuses track record that makes North Korea look like a model state.
Or maybe Thomas should have just declared that he has a bias for israel instead of camouflaging his biases and prejudices by depriving key grave unmatched Israeli violations.
Personally I think that israel is playing a key role in the diminishment of American power and prestige in the world. The American public is sick and tired of foreign wars and it is really trying to avoid unnecessary wars but then you have a situation where israel is dragging America and abusing American power and prestige to get involved in conflicts that have persisted longer than they should due to israel's bad faith approach where they pay lip-service in conflict resolution negotiations with no intent for a peaceful settlement. You find that in those peace talks israel is either dragging it's feet to buy more time to get favourable conditions that would allow israel to isolate the Palestinians without actually solving the issue of the 700000 Palestinians that were expelled from their land and remain displaced.
Both Charlie and Thomas being journalists should have really highlighted the fact that israel has killed more journalists than in any conflict and has hindered journalistic access so that there's transparent reporting!!

I also remember so many interviews Charlie gave in earlier, less crazy times, which enhanced my life, interests, and thoughts.
One less hopeful thought of the ME - for decades, as long as I remember, I have been distressed at the Arab street dancing, demonstrating about every atrocity against all Westerners - not just Jews, Americans, Brits. Decades before 9/11. I hope they are a minority, but, like most MAGAs they are many, noisy, nasty, and affect us all.

So again, why can't this arrangement be expanded to include the West Bank and Gaza? Obviously it would require time to formulate and a process of reconciliation like what South Africa used to dismantle their apartheid system.
