What Calabrian Greek sounds like

- Hearing Calabrian Greek spoken in the villages of Gallicianò and Bova. For those who speak Greek, I didn't find it to be ancient or Doric sounding at all. There are some words that certainly are old ("outhe" for "no", "chloro" for the color green, "anthos" for flower, "platego" for "to speak" which probably comes from "politeuo" (πολιτευω) which means "to act like a citizen/speak in a public forum" etc.). But it basically sounds like Italianized modern Greek with some ancient words.
There appear to be no theta, gamma, or delta sounds evidencing Latin/Italian influence. Anything beginning with a "kappa" is pronounced with a "che" rather than a hard c sound like modern Greek. Hence you hear "che" for "and" instead of kai (και). The "ψ" is inverted. Rather than a "ps" sound in modern Greek, Calabrian Greek say "sp." Hence, the modern Greek word "psyche" (ψυχή) is pronounced "spyche." Also all "chi" ("Χ") and "xi"sounds ("Ξ") seem pronounced like "sh" which is common in modern Italian.
I suspect they speak a dialect more closely related to the Koine Greek spoken at the time of the 11th century Byzantine Empire, the last and final time Southern Italy was still part of the Greek speaking world. Or perhaps it was influenced by Greek refugees fleeing Constantinople upon its fall to the Turks in 1453. What's interesting is that they have no Turkish loan words which modern Greek has such as tzami for "glass" among others (they call it "vitro" which is Italian) which make sense given the Ottomans never conquered the region. Overall, most modern Greek speakers should understand it pretty thoroughly.
Remarkable that these living relics of an ancient past still exist. And would have been more numerous had it not been for strong pressure to Italianize during the time of Italian unification and the rise of fascism under Mussollini. Interestingly, Greek Orthodoxy is making a comeback and the government supports maintaining this highly endangered dialect. Enjoy!

Sadly that phrase is being used to kinda shame others who are of other ethnicity and stuff. Although I know the true meaning and it is true that Italians and Greeks are really close. Italian is a language I always wanted to learn and maybe that is the reason.
My God, they use the ancient word "ὦδε" instead of "'ἐδῶ" for "here". "Arte" for "now" comes, pobably, from ancient "ἄρτι" ("just now"). Absolutely understandable by a modern Greek. So touching!!!
They obviously didnt lose the contact with Greek proper though. They pretty much speak modern Greek not koine or anything. Just another dialect with some Italian elements. Also it looks like many things have been reintroduced. Anyway I wouldnt trust someone that also speaks standard modern Greek like the man in the video. But anyway. It is fascinating.

It kind of makes sense if you think about that though. The edges of a cultural influence is where the culture last arrives, and thus stays longer. Probably classical Greek sounded more like this than like modern Greek does (sans the italian accent, of course). A bit like 1500s Castilian probably sounded more like nowadays latin american accents than the spanish spoken today in Spain.
I am also Cypriot, and the Cypriot dialect is closer to ancient Greek that modern Greek
I am southern Italian family from Salerno Napoli Livorno Roma and my autosomal dna shows to have Cyprus at 6 percent .. which is interesting because my maternal Haplogroup is HV4a1 which HV4 is completely absent from Northern European dna but only common in Calabria , greek islands and Middle East, HV was also found in many ancient skeletal samples of the Minoan women.. I'm Greek and I just came back from a trip to Sicily and South Italy. The main purpose was that a good friend of mine was getting married to an Italian girl from Calabria, however, I wanted to turn this into a more pleasant experience, so initially, I visited the Sicilian east coast (passed by Catania, Taormina and ended up in Syracusa). I hadn't realized before the footprint of ancient Greek civilization in the area (yeah I had heard about Magna Grecia in school etc), but everywhere you turned there was an ancient monument! In Syracuse there was the museum of Archimedes, and a statue of him on the bridge where you enter the small island of Ortygia from the mainland part of the city. As soon as you enter Ortygia you see the ancient ruins of the temple of Apollo, then Piazza de Archimede,, and then Syracusa Duomo which was built on top of the ancient monument temple of Athina. You see "explore the Greek Syracusa" tours everywhere, big signs/advertisements of ancient tragedy theater plays etc etc. Furthermore, there was the Parco Archeologico of Neapolis, right at the side of the city of Syracusa, where you could visit ancient sites like the "Ear of Dionysius", the tomb of Archimedes, and of course Teatro Greco, a great full-size ancient amphitheater. There was a similar site in Taormina with another Teatro Greco there.
Then I visited mainland Italy, Palmi and Reggio Calabria, and while at the wedding, I was talking to local Italian friends of the couple and they told me there were areas in that region where people were still speaking the Greek language - Griko. They said you should definitely visit, but unfortunately, I didn't get the time. A few days after the catholic wedding, the couple also performed a small orthodox wedding ceremony at a Greek Orthodox nearby church "Chiesa Ortodossa di S.Elia e Filareto". I noticed that the priests there spoke to us in Greek but with an Italian accent.
Then on the way back to Sicily, we stopped by the seaside town of Scilla where the myth says that on the rocks by the Scilla town castle, the six dog-headed monster Scylla lived. The same monster (Σκύλα in Greek) and area is the one that according to Homer, Odysseus encountered on his way back to Ithaca.
Finally, the last couple of days were spent in a seaside hotel near Catania in Sicily again, and as I was relaxing one morning with my daughter by the hotel pool, there was an Italian couple with their two young children next to us. The woman comes up to me and asked where we were from, I said Greece. She then said: “Ha, I knew it, I recognized the words. This is the language that my mother was speaking in the house and the area she grew up in”... Then she explained that they were living in the city of Lecce, and apparently her mother’s house was in a small nearby town which was called….”Calimera”, which literally means “good morning” in Greek!! Actually, I thought she was joking at the time, but I googled it afterwards, and apparently, there really exists such a place!.
So, after this experience, I had to look up for more info on this “Griko” language and I'm glad I found this video!

As a Roman that has studied ancient greek for 4 years, I can say that I am extremely proud for what my ancestors and my far cousins of Greece have accomplished 2000 years ago. Even though Latin and the Ancient Greek that our ancestors spoke is no longer used, we can and we should try to preserve our heritage and culture for future generations.

I am from Sardinia. It seems quite a long way from Greece, however, digging in, the links pop up and are still important. It begins with the foundation of the city of Olbia which, according to classical writers, was founded by people from Φώκαια, Modern scholars have always rejected this hypothesis, until a few years ago, during some archaeological excavations, the typically Greek foundation emerged under the Punic city. The Greek city lasted a few decades but the name was preserved throughout the Roman period. After Sardinia it was conquered by the Vandals but reconquered, after about 80 years by Justinian and became a province of the Exarchate of Africa. When the Arabs conquered North Africa, Sardinia remained the only free province. The news on the early Middle Ages in Sardinia are sparse, the Byzantine gold coins disappeared during the eighth century. Probably the last governors sent from Constantinople together with the local aristocracy formed a political entity formally dependent on Constantinople but in fact independent. However, the ties were never completely severed: when in the 10th century the Byzantine Empire once again became an influential power in the Mediterranean, the Sardinian rulers, the IUDICES in Latin, the archons in Greek, restored and rebuilt churches with dedications in Middle Hellenic language, despite the fact that a neo-Latin language had already formed on the island. After yet another attempt at Muslim conquest, thwarted by the fleets of Genoa and Pisa, ties with the Eastern Empire began to become increasingly scarce. The Norman conquest of southern Italy put an end to relations with Constantinople. Despite this, the Sardinian IUDECES continued to use Byzantine symbols in the exercise of their power, the first writings of the Sardinian neo-Latin language were composed with the Greek alphabet and, still today in Sardinia we celebrate Saint Constantinus who, as is known, is a saint for the Orthodox church but not for the Catholic one. In one town, Sedilo, for the occasion, an equestrian competition around the sanctuary dedicated to him takes place, perhaps to celebrate the victory against Maxentius. Finally, returning to the classical era, in central-western Sardinia, there was a city called Neapolis, a clear Greek toponym, in Roman times. Historical sources tell us nothing about the history of this city. The ruins are still called Santa Maria di Nabui, in the local dialect, a clear continuation of the ancient toponym according to the phonetics of the local neo-Latin dialect.

Olbia by the way = Olvia = Όλβιος = Όλος + Βίος = Holo(Holistic) + Bio which was/is a wish for literally a ''full-life'' (on this realm = Βίος) that would lead to an advancement of the soul into the (after)life (=ζωή in Greek)... this means that life in Olbia must look/feel just like paradise!

But, due to our mistakes, from 1400-1500 we got divided: the ones who remained christian, they come from that old byzantine ONE, they never had connection with Turks and they paid it expensively, even with their blood as martyrs... The ones who became Muslim, they become Turkalbanians... I dont judge your ancestors, it was difficult and painful. Something new, got born in now Albania after 1500. But if you still like to say that you are one race with Greek Byzantine Arvanitas, start from becoming orthodox christian again. It's not about blood. That is mixed everywhere, and all bloods are God's.. It's about faith,culture, different history and way of thinking.

If you really want to hear Greek with an Italian accent, go to the island of Kalymnos and speak with the very elderly. You will hear a delightful sing-songishness in the language. You see, Kalymnos was part of the Dodecanese ( "The12 Islands") under Italian domination until 1948. You can figure out the rest.

After centuries...and in the occitan valleys of piedmont, val maira val varaita, they speak occitan , but piemontese accent, so it seems someone from asti or cuneo uding the same language than in the pyrennees

My parents and family are from Southern Calabria from Provence of Reggio Calabria. I knew that the region they were from, known as Magna Graecia, had a solid Greek history. The cities like Caulonia (Kaulon) and Locri sounded very Greek. The sea of the coast where my family is from is the Ionian Sea. This is the first time that I really get to see and hear the language of such rich culturally and ancient people. I appreciate the language is still kept alive. Thank you for the video!

There is a Greek word with ancient origin "ΠΛΑΤΙΑΖΩ" (platiazo) which translates to "spread out/extend, my speech". We also have place names like "ΠΛΑΤΑΙΕΣ"(plate es), ancient city. The word "ΠΛΑΤΥΣ" (platis) which must be the root, means "elongated" more or less. (not a professor or anything)
Discovered about this language today, impressive how big of an impact history can be on people.

What I heard was a mix of classic and modern Greek, with a pinch of Italian, mainly the accent and a few latin words, and some pronunciation from southern Greece, like Cretan tsekism (the "che" instead of "ke" and the "sh" pronunciation instead of "χ" on the word "cherome" (χαίρομαι)).
It was an amazing and interesting dialect.

I would just remind everybody. Southern Italy was colonized by the greeks, called Magna Grecia. Later after the fall of the Roman Empire, regions like Calabria became part of the "Byzantine empire", which although it had not been fully Hellenized at the time, it kept the regions connected to Greece. Later, especially regions such as Naxos and Crete and the Peloponnese (Santorini being an Italian town) became part of NORTHEN Italian kingdoms until the 16th (with southern Italians kingdoms leaving Greece around 11th), the Italian influence in this regions also mean that greater similarity can be found with Crete (however, Calabrian and Meridional Italic dialects, are completely different from Veneti and Ligurian dialects, as such you can actually find Italic borrowings in Crete that you can''t in this greek dialect).

Wow what a video I came across TH-cam I'm a Cypriot and this gave me goosebumps some of their greek is close to the Cypriot Greek dialect
I am Cypriot and I can see clearly now why on the recent DNA tests the Haplogroup palette of Cypriots match more with south Italians than mainland Greeks. The resemblance of the dialects and even the rhythm of the accents is astonishing. Still, I feel obliged to mention that Griko does not trace its roots directly from archaic or classical Greek but from Koine. That's because of the Eastern Roman Empire, the empire, which survived for 1000 years, had for a very long time south Italy and Sicily as a part of it. So the Greek language continuum evolved like any other part of Hellenism, except of course Tsakonian(Lakonian). I think your next destination should be Cyprus so we can observe our dialect from a better point of view(provided that your video will be a little bit more informative) :P :D
