  • Remember the Dodge 360 small-block engine from Roadkill Garage episodes 3 and 4? It was later run on the dyno for Engine Masters episode 14, and then rebuilt, hopped up, and retested for a future Engine Masters. But the machine shop screwed it up pretty badly, so here’s an update from the set of Roadkill Garage on what’s coming next for the powerplant that is supposed to end up in the Vanishing Paint Challenger.
We’ve provided this free episode on TH-cam to give you a taste of Roadkill Extra so you can decide if you'd like to subscribe for more episodes.

As you watch, cruise over to Facebook.com/RoadkillShow, follow us, and watch for future posts asking for your questions to be answered on the Q&A sessions that are posted every Friday on Roadkill Extra Powered by Dodge.

I thought maybe they supplied the wrong 'stack height' (1/2 stroke + rod length + piston compression height), but that wouldn't explain the deck being different end to end of the block...
Actually, I don't like decking blocks (other than a few thousands to 'true' it), prefer getting -0- deck or .025" deck via proper stack height of parts...

I had a 318 come into my shop running like shit, but it ran. I managed a engine rebuilding shop where we R&R engines and built them in our shop. Anyway, this engine shook like mad and barely got the Dodge van into the shop. So when the guys tore the motor down I had to see what was up with this motor, and I'm glad I did because I never would have believed what the problem. The number three main journal, where the thrust bearing resides in Mopars, was broken clean in half. It broke at an angle so the two halves of the crankshaft were pushing each other around in the motor allowing to run. Unbelievable! The main bearing had spun in the block and trashed it, so we ended up upselling the customer into a 360. They say you can't kill a 318, well this guy came really close!

Once the block is machined correctly, whatever intake is used has to be machined to match the block. So every time an intake or fuel system is changed, the intake has to be machined to match. Mopar blocks are super stiff because of the sidewalls extending well below the crankshaft and because of the high nickel content iron they're cast with. It's so much simpler to just have the deck to crank CL , and deck flatness measured instead of machined. These blocks also don't need to be line bored due to their stiffness too. Once in a while the heads have to checked for flatness if there was a head gasket problem.

It happens with machine shops. My papa told me that happened when he took his 360 to Muscle Motors. Took it to another shop and they shook their head and fixed it. When Chrysler had the 4inch crank for 360s, back in the 2000, he had Muscle Motors do it and they had it in Mopar Magazine.

Don't even get me started on rebuilding a Dodge 360. Years ago I had a friend of mine rebuild a 360 to put in my '73 Dart. This dude was supposed to be a Mopar guy with lots of experience, knew him for years. Just after a few hundred miles the rocker arms were all worn out. (Most likely due to an incorrectly installed cam bearing that prevented oil getting to the rocker arms.) Then came a leaking freeze plug, turned out he didn't replace the freeze plugs. Next thing on the list was a vibration felt inside the car while driving, eventually he admitted the crankshaft wasn't balanced because of the extra cost. (But he never asked me...)
Later I discovered the timing chain was installed incorrectly; the marks did not line up.
So we are talking about four (4!) different amateur mistakes in a single rebuild done by a 'Mopar expert'.
If there is one thing I learned in the car business, it's NOT to trust anyone who presents himself as a 'Specialist'.

Hey, good day. 360s in Oz, were rare. Wog Chariots; Vals were known as! And yes liked all the LA info, that was only recent. I trusted my machine guy and was lucky not to have real tears, due to lost parts. A piston to valve clearance issue, with a nice solid grind, needed the piston valve reliefs cut. I did not check the work. The motor after years and a failed launch in front of many, ran oh so good. Except for the rather marinized look, outa one bank!! A head repair that aborted with the first bit of uneven heating { start up ! } Provided the water feature. On tear down, lovely little faintest marks, showed up the poor workmanship. However in all fairness, I did not measure every pot. So my bad.
    Cheers Adam.

If they reconditioned stock rods, I'd check rod lengths as well. I don't know if Steve only measured how far in the hole the pistons were before filming this, but that can be rods just as well as a bad deck job. If each piston down a bank is progressively farther in the hole, it's probably the deck job. If it's random, think rods.

Zero deck on a 360? The piston is 070 down the hole!
Rush makes more work, check every inch of the way. Never believe what a machine shop has done.
I used to be an engine sealer for a Holden 6 class that has fairly tight regulation. I have seen blocks decked crooked, heads milled crooked diagonally, engines with bent rods and one engine seemed to have been line bored out of square too,,, it was tight, pulled front and rear main caps and you could see the bearing wear,, on a fresh machined engine. And not a bent crank, though have seen those too.
Though GM managed to make so many of those engines all woppy as well, though never decked crooked. Main tunnels and cam tunnels though are generally very avarage.
This is just bad machining, not the cheats that they kept on trying on! eg stroking the engines 10 thou etc.
As for bad machining from factory, Or bad assembly. A Ford 6 assembled from new with a broken top ring, A Holden with a 9 thou oddity on one main journal, A Holden V8 with 5 thou problem, A Clevo with no centre main thrust shell, Valiant hemis with odd sized lifter bores,, they have an astris on the engine number pad. And you cannot buy oversize lifters any more! That block had been line bored, main studs, torque plate bored and honed, decked,, but was in effect junk .

That's a little piece of Mallory, maybe 3/4" and it's got a lot of room to be moved to the outside of the counterweight, so it has full effect. Normally for a external to internal move, we're talking 1" pieces of heavy metal. Now, those are aftermarket rods, and probably pistons too, so they're lighter than factory stuff, but it's still poor craftsmanship putting heavy metal that far from the CW edge. 0.100 is all you need.
A set of mildly ported W2 heads would easily have you over 500HP.

true, but it's probably a OLD 3 phase compressor. They can be found used for pretty damn good prices considering what they are. Lots of shops\manufacturing places that shut down auction them off. Your right a home garage really doesn't need something like that, but the places they came from did, and you can't buy something of comparable quality with a more appropriate size for the same price new, not even close

Hey I have an idea for you... an Anti-Roadkill car. Something with power but nothing crazy, but smooth acceleration, smooth steering, smooth suspension, smooth breaks and quiet quiet quiet.

Maybe a little boring, but everybody is about dropped airbag suspension to the floor, or lifted with 37"+ tires, or as much horsepower and torque with straight exhausts. My dream car/truck would be an early 50s Truck body or older with a good 6 cylinder (or small 8) engine that drove like a dream and was quiet and comfortable. Good sound dampening and mufflers, quiet tires, smooth shocks, steering, brakes, and shifting. Nice stereo. Clean on the outside with a wooden deck, shaved emblems, lowered just a touch, tinted windows, white paint job, LED lights, and maybe shaved door handles. Really clean, reliable, and great to drive. I don't need something to do 0-60 in 4 seconds, but enough power to get up and go if needed. I would not want a trailer queen or anything like that... something to drive every day that you would want to drive every day with just enough style to turn heads. Most shoot for performance above everything else, but I want smooth, quiet, and reliable.

Everybody does the high horsepower street racer 4x4 rock climber supercharged nitro baja. Think of something like 5 window 50 Chevy truck with a 6 cylinder Ecoboost engine with an automatic transmission on a custom frame with 4 wheel independant suspension using some old school thick whitewall tires. Add is a good sound system that is crystal clear and make sure it has good heat and AC.
It would be interesting on a finished build with the typical Magnaflow Exhaust and low profile performance tires and test the sound levels at idle, acceleration, and highway speed. Then change the exhaust and tires, adjust the shocks and transmission, add the Dynamat and Lizard Skin, insulate around the engine and wrap the exhaust, and hunt down every rattle, squeak, and whistle. Then compare sound levels. Maybe even test how much certain things affect the noise levels. It should be easy to get a bunch of sponsored products too.

Boat anchor. Shouldn't have chose that one since it's dyno said it was junk. Some times they're just too far gone - can't shine a turd. Machine shop probably did as best they could with what they were working with.
