I love the characteristic Two Loud Two Soft beats of the Super Ds. One railwayman described the class as ‘Super but not that Super’. Firemen had to cope with a narrow cab which had a floor lower in the centre than at the sides. Awkward and daft! Lovely whistle mind you… far better than the waffly LMS hooters.

Great recap of the Super D. 1 of the small number of NRM locos I would like to see back out running.

The old LNWR is so pitifully under represented in the preservation world, especial when one considers how big it was.
In my opinion building locos like the clan is a mistake when there are so many earlier missing links which could be replaced.

yes, I hope it's finished before I am. Do you think we'll see the super D in steam again.?

@@nigelmitchell351i think i did hear that pete waterman wanted to look into overhauling it again but that was a couple of years ago now and not heard anything since.

@@kineticrail I know he was very involved in financing the first restoration, which I read was very problem and expensive.
I stupidly didn’t get to see it in steam. My dad had many happy memories of these old girls on long freights at Rugby in the 1930’s.

One of my all-time favourite locomotives, I love her ghostly whistle. Hope one day she'll steam again, thanks for sharing :)

It reminds me of a time when as a boy I raced one of these locos on my bike. I distinctly remember the wheezing noises and uneven exhaust beat as it slowly dragged its train of clanking goods wagons.

I saw this at Shildon a few weeks ago, but not up close since it’s sandwiched between two rows of exhibits and you can’t get a good view of the side. Despite how hard it is to see, it’s truly a phenomenal loco and seeminlgy a very powerful one too.

How does the engine at the back know how much power to apply? If they pushed too hard wouldn’t it risk detailing the train or something?

Something about Joy valve gear instead of Stephenson.

Joy Valve Gear is apparently very hard to set at an even beat unlike the equivalent Stephenson or Walschaerts designs and other iterations of said designs. I personally don't have the answers why but that is what I have heard passed on
