    I went to Shildon today and managed to see this lovely sole survivor, albeit not up close due to where they’d put it. It’s a very nice loco, as well as being powerful.

    I knew a driver who loved them and drove Super Ds on freights from London to Glasgow and across the Pennines. “Never let you down and if anything went wrong they would still get you home “running on just one side”.
    At night on board a passenger train with eyes closed he could tell you exactly where the train was by the sound of the track under the wheels.

    Loved to see these, a friend of mine drove them for many years, his favourite class of loco.
    The most epic sight I ever encountered with steam was in the early 1950s seeing a triple headed double banked freight of 100 wagons burst into Preston Station up the steep bank from Preston Docks with exhaust blasting sky high.
    Fitters were banned from moving them on shed because the regulator could develop a hydraulic lock and it it was opened with even a breath of steam would run amok. Numerous ended up down into the turntable

    The idea of 0-8-0 just look nice because they were so odd but they have some issues being many and these 0-8-0s and 49395 is lucky to even be existing let alone fully operational *also Rest In Peace the Caledonian 600 class*

      There's also the LNER Q6 and Q7 classes, each of which have one survivor.

    very good Chris there was also a trick with super Ds when struggling for steam which enginemen were you take one of the plugs out and play tricks on the driver like put the plug somewhere so the driver can't find it or put it on the hotplate if you watch life on the footplate video you can tell most Crewe enginemen can tell you it was there least favourite engine but we are luck 49395 is preserved

    I always thought there were more of this class around, boy was I ever wrong, thanks for clearing that up for me. It's a nice engine I will admit, I just wish it was running right now. Still, great video and I can't wait for the next installment of this series. Nice work Chris.

    What does “the controls are all backwards mean?” Like are they on the opposite side, open the wrong way or just counter-intuitive to operate? Also do the injectors leak constantly and you don’t know it?

    • @oisinoraghallaigh5636
      @oisinoraghallaigh5636 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Late but here goes: Yeah, they open the wrong way. It's a left hand drive engine, and the regulator opens anti-clockwise instead of clockwise. So when it's shut, the regulator is up in front of your face, and when its open it's down by your knee. The reverser is also backwards, you turn it anti-clockwise for forward gear, and clockwise for reverse gear

    The only surviving ex-LNWR big engine. The Super D's were awkward buggers to work on, but got the job done. Any chance of a profile on the Crabs one day?

      60103 flying scotsman That is true. But one of the three is part of the national collection and not running. Leaving Chris only two to film. Would probably be just as much of a pain as it was for him to film the Britannia's. He faces the same scenario with the GWR kings

  • @russellgxy2905
    @russellgxy2905 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm not sure that they were that complicated, given they were the last LNWR locos to remain in service.

    • @owenmeschter9888
      @owenmeschter9888 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just because they lasted long doesn't mean everyone liked them. The railroads liked them because of how strong they were, but the chairmen of the railroad(s) never drove the clunky things, so I'd imagine crews were not a fan of the backward controls and crappy valve gear.

      At the very least there’s the George V new build and the relica Bloomer additing to the LNWR representation in present day.

    Any reason for the pronounced frontal overhang?

    • @rayhagele
      @rayhagele 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a guess, but I think its to fit on smaller turntables. I know some American prototypes have overhang on the tenders so they can squeeze onto existing turntables without spending the money to upgrade them. As long as the overhang didn't hit anything your good to go.

      Will Horowitz Oh hell no!

    • @brad2799
      @brad2799 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Will Horowitz Well, a Fowler 7F is basically a Midlandised-LNWR G2 and G2A. So having a preserved G2 is more worth it.

    • @Rosie6857
      @Rosie6857 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Fowler 7F is an LMS engine and owes nothing to the Super D but maybe a little to the Midland Railway. It was a superior locomotive in all respects except one, which was crucial, in that its axleboxes were inadequate and caused perpetual maintenance problems. So they were scrapped rather early, leaving the "Stupid D" (a GWR term BTW) to soldier on.

    Know I love the idea of having the pistons under the chassis and have just rods on outside but it just looks ugly on an engine with 8 driving wheels
    Good thing America only did the under piston thing with just one class
