    In this video we take a look at the most recent version of these revolutionary couplings, checkout their efficiency with a rake of the notorious container wagons and also Graham Farish’s latest version mark 1 coaches with NEM pockets which haven’t featured on either of the previous two videos.
    I’ll show the successes and failings if or when they occur.

    Hi John, I have now seen all three of your videos on the Hunts couplings and although as you know, N Gauge is not for me (too small with my eyesight lol) but I really enjoyed everything you have shown us. I love your presentation and just wish I coult present my videos on Tram Junction as well as you do. I was really chuffed to see your Blue Peter performing, as you know steam is my preference when it comes to running trains. So thank you very much for taking the time to show these videos and I am sure that those who run N Gauge will have learned quite a lot about how well these Hunt couplings perform and all the different lengths of couplings can work with each other.
    Well done my friend. Looking forward to your next episode on your new 00 Piccadilly Sisings. Take care John and stay safe.
    Kindest regards
    Geoff

      Thanks Geoff, yes, many people have acknowledged that N gauge isn’t for them, and clearly we all model the scale, era, train type that suits each of us. There will be another video for Piccadilly Sidings either at.weekend or next week. Been making point rodding, lever frames and few other bits.

    Another good video and you certainly put the Hunt Couplings through their paces. My own Hunt couplings arrived today - so the HST has been converted. I'll run it after my evening meal. Had to refer to your earlier video as some of the pockets needed to have the body shell removed to put the pocket back in place - so thanks for showing how to do it. Cheers Euan

      @@piccadillymodelrailways Hi John - 99% successful - only issue the coupling between the motorised power car and first carriage. The corridors rub even on relatively gentle curves and I get a derailment. Swapped those back to rapido and no issues. The NEM pocket on the power car is set further back so the close coupling Hunts aren't quite long enough. That said all the other coaches are fine. Even tested on a first radius curve and no issues when being pushed by the motorised power car. Pretty pleased. Also had to fix a couple of carriges where the NEM pocket wasn't totally free - just followed what you did - so thanks. Euan

      Id put rapidos on both power cars Euan avoids all issues. Ive got standard couplings as you know, they would be too long for HST

    A very useful set of videos on these couplings. Could you do another short one on identifying the different coupling housings that exist. I would like to get my coaches closer together but I don’t know if it is possible.

    • @piccadillymodelrailways
      @piccadillymodelrailways  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi glad you liked the videos. Regarding the coupling housings there are just the two types, ie NEM pocket covered in the first and third video. The spring housing in the second. The methods used to mount each of these two housing varies dramatically. Although I do have a large I cannot possibly show every type, so regarding another video, sorry its wont be possible, as other projects need to get done. However if Chris does produce further couplings and sends some to me for review Ill then do that.
      Despite saying all that happy to help where I can. What sort of coaches do you have?

    • @MossdaleNGaugeRailway
      @MossdaleNGaugeRailway 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@piccadillymodelrailways I understand. I have a few wagons with broken couplings and didn't want to add to the list. My Farish coaches seem the easiest to do, so I will start with them, followed by Bachman as you have done these in your videos. I also have some Lima coaches that are not like the above but similar to Bachman but with a wider housing and another odd coach that I thought was Farish but isn't and shows no markings at all.

      Hi, perhaps if you message me on Facebook with pics and I’ll do my best.
      Must say I don’t work for Hunt couplings, they asked me to review their N gauge couplings. I’ve modelled in N gauge for about 4 years and have experienced a varied amount of stock and certainly not every model by quite a long way. I’ve never had Lima N gauge, but if you send some pics I’ll try to help you get them up and running again.

    Hi John - My Hunts arrived yesterday and have not given them a try yet a lot of my rolling stock are a mix of NEM and non NEM and I do have random uncoupling issues so if I can get improvements then I will be delighted and reducing the gaps would be a bonus .

    • @piccadillymodelrailways

      Brilliant Kev, Im sure you’ll see a difference and at first it might man you have to have a mixture of couplings until you get each wagon sorted. Even on my small array of OO wagons probably ive got around 4-5 ways in which couplings are attached, def not all NEM

    thanks john. what do you think of appearance vs rapido or dapol knuckle?

    • @piccadillymodelrailways
      @piccadillymodelrailways  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tim, thank you for the question. They are what they are. Couplings always going to be dramatically over scale in N gauge if they are to work. I’ve got loads of the Dapol knuckle couplings but the simply don’t work. Dapol couplings sadly droop and it varies from vehicle to vehicle, so they constantly uncouple. They look the best by far, but if they don’t work? This is obviously just my opinion mind.

    • @piccadillymodelrailways
      @piccadillymodelrailways  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi thank you for the question, both have their advantages and disadvantages. In N I can run near full length trains at speed, but in OO its bigger and a greater feast for the eye with detail I wouldn’t attempt in N gauge.

    • @UKRailsandMore
      @UKRailsandMore 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John, thanks for your thoughts on this, I started off in 00 years ago with a bedroom and then loft layout as a progression from the train set as a kid and then went to N for the same reasons. Decided to go back to 00 this time but both are brilliant, may need a little bit more space to model something like Piccadilly in 00! All the best, Paul

    • @piccadillymodelrailways
      @piccadillymodelrailways  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes exactly, if I was just to model PICCADILLY station in OO I could just about get it into the room ive got, but it wouldnt have any lead in at all just station platforms and building, not worth it for me as trains wouldnt go anywhere

    Oh my whats happend to a class 50 haha i see a cab, im tempted to get them and try them on fixed sts like the old Farish 170s or 168, have you tried a magnet between the 150 ?? See if that copes with them

    • @piccadillymodelrailways
      @piccadillymodelrailways  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, the 50 is one of the really old Farish ones I tried to convert to DCC. It did work, but was so unreliable I scrapped it. 150, yes the close couplings are too close same as Mark 1s. I’ve put it to Chris about a couple half way between close and standard, but haven’t had a response yet. TBH, I’m gonna use the hunts on the Dapol stock that would normally separate whilst moving. The Farish couplings by enlarge are very stable, so I might just leave those for now.

    Can an automatic uncouple work with these couplings.

    • @piccadillymodelrailways
      @piccadillymodelrailways  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Patrick, thank you for the question. If you mean automatic uncoupling for shunting in the same way as Dapol easi-shunt or kaydees for OO, sadly not. They beauty of these though they don’t just randomly uncouple as some trains whilst going along and are easy to disconnect hand of god style.

    • @GWRailFan
      @GWRailFan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe in the near future there could be a panel in the track made that has some magnetic field that will force the magnets apart??

    • @piccadillymodelrailways
      @piccadillymodelrailways  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, I do like the idea, however Im not part of Hunt Couplings. Rather they asked me to produce video reviews of their recent products. I have, however, put this to Chris and he has given a definite ’no’ automatic uncoupling in N gauge.
      Being a teacher, and having taught magnetism if one magnet was mounted in the track say North pole. The north pole couple would repel and the South would attract. Having not tried it I think it would depend on the power of the coupled magnets and whether the one in the track is powerful enough to separate the wagons. BUT the coupling attracted to the track would not automatically release unless its an electro magnet.
      Suddenly it gets incredibly complex very quickly. Hope you see what I mean.
      Therefore the dapol easi-shunt are the only option atm.

    So with these couplings you need to limit yourself to fixed formations in roundy roundy layouts. So limited to modelling all the handful of railways that operate like this.
    Plenty seem to play with train like this.

    • @piccadillymodelrailways
      @piccadillymodelrailways  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John, I dont feel limited at all. Do understand I was asked to do these videos and am not part of the business.
      If you model railways John whether be in N gauge or OO you will know trains often uncouple whilst they go along. The person who created them realised magnets would stay together. Thats it, so yes they are designed for fixed rakes which is what many people run. I certainly do. We are all free to create layouts how we like. I have built in turn around a round facility meaning I can tun trains how and where I like
