  • I hope you enjoyed this new Toccata, based on the famous 'Westminster-Tune'! You can find the sheet music for this piece here: www.paulfeyorganist.com/produ...
    This piece was recorded using the Hauptwerk VI Software and the Goch Sampleset made by Piotr Grabowski. It was played on my Gloria Klassik 352 digital organ sponsored by Kisselbach Germany. Find more information about Kisselbach here:

    I really enjoyed listening to this ! One of the things I liked was the more intimate, liturgical feel it had compared to the Vierne Carillon de Westminster, which after all was written originally as a concert tour work.
    Another plus point is that it seems relatively accessible in a technical sense, so that a larger number of organists will be able to learn and enjoy playing it 😀

    This is a fabulous toccata on the Westminster Chimes, Paul, and your performance is spectacular: bravo!
    Did you know that the actual chimes see the quarter bells play a once-repeating, 20-note sequence of rounds with four changes in the key of E major? The original tune is that of the 'Cambridge Chimes', first used for the chimes of Great St Mary's church, Cambridge, and supposedly a variation, attributed to William Crotch, based on violin phrases from the air in Handel's 'Messiah' - "I know that my Redeemer liveth".
    The notional words of the chime, again derived from Great St Mary's, and in turn an allusion to Psalm 37:23-24, are:
    "All through this hour
    Lord be my guide
    And by Thy power
    No foot shall slide"
    These words are written on a plaque on the wall of the clock room!

    This is an interesting piece, Paul. Not quite as dramatic as the Vierne and the timing if the toll is different but it is dramatic and delightful. It is not to be compared to the Vierne because it stands on its own and should be considered that way.

    Excellent composition form and clarity of musical thought and motif Paul, but I want to pose a challenge and “up the ante”. I can recognize your outstanding abilities and your talent. I think it’s time for those of us under 45 wrest control of our instrument from the boomers and to deal the organ “back into the game”, as it were before it’s too late.
    Music psychology tells us that people love the Melodies that they know, but largely don’t care the form that they take. So with that as our guide, the challenge is to write some new organ works in the appropriate style of standard organ music, ie toccata, fugue, ricercare, etc etc etc, BUT using popular contemporary praise and worship songs from the past 20 years as the subject matter. I’m not sure how it is in Europe but in North America the organ is being pushed further and further into irrelevance in our churches, castigated as a boring lifeless instrument, thanks to boring lifeless organists who play them. If we can show that the organ, the king of instruments is versatile enough to not only play the popular garbage coming forth, but to take those songs, however tonally simplistic in original form, and reharmonize and play them in a style that sounds appropriate or even is an improvement on the organ.
    My goal as a pipe organ builder is to support composers/arrangers who have the talent and cojones to get past their egos and obedience to the useless dilettantes of the type who lurk on your comment threads or in darkened organ departments, to write relevant organ music that will create awe and inspiration for the average listener, and won’t frighten or confuse them with any “new school” gobbledygook (Messiaen need not apply). Based on what I’ve heard over the past 2 months that I’ve followed you, I think you’ve got what it takes, but are you up for the challenge? Or should I keep searching? (As an aside, I’m also looking for secular arrangements as well, such as a fugue in the style of Bach on the theme of Iron Butterfly’s In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. GenX concert goers would love it, and this late GenX organist would love playing it. Everyone knows the old adage: if you want your kids to eat vegetables, hide them inside muffins. This is the same approach.)

    • @PaulFey
      @PaulFey  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I‘m so happy to hear that, thank you! 😀 That’s a great approach to get the organ „back in the game“ - we are a bit slow making these adaptions in Germany, but I‘ve heard that the organ tends to dissapear from workship. I‘d definitely be up for the challenge - the problem might be, that these new hymn tunes are still covered by copyright, which would make it a lot harder to ‚process‘ them. Do you have an idea how to avoid this? 😀

    • @JB-td4ei
      @JB-td4ei ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, there are a few ways, the first being the doctrine of “fair use”. If you own the book in which you take the song from, there are several international common-law conventions that hold any interpretations/changes/arrangements in performance of purchased works do not violate copyright, but that could be interpreted as live performances only, however, in the case of improvisation artists like yourself, argument could be made that the creation of a score is just a form of recording your improvisation.
      The second is to contact the publisher for permission, outlining what you want to do. Most would be delighted that the music is going to have a life beyond its original purpose. Given the very focused, very niche environment that the arrangement is being written for they probably wouldn’t even charge a fee. If they did, that’s where a benefactor like myself or anyone else who wants to support comes in.
      Last is the most common approach taken by far: just do it and ask forgiveness IF caught. Again it goes back to the niche market argument: the chances of you ever coming across their radar are practically nil. Which is what makes the second option a little more dangerous: if you put yourself in the radar of these groups then you’re forever on their radar. There are 100’s of thousands of musicians on TH-cam who do full-on “covers” of popular music under copyright, and I can’t name one sensational copyright legal case stemming from it.
      I worked for Canada’s national music museum, part of my job was working on rights management, and it is honestly so messy and convoluted that even the industry professionals haven’t a clue. There are common practices when doing arrangements/interpretations that the original composers get credit. Where the publishers/Artists get particularly owlish is when someone uses their work without crediting them. You’re not selling millions of copies, and your views aren’t in the millions yet, are they? (I wish they were!) So that’s probably the saving grace in dealing with such a niche market. The amount of churches committing gross copyright violations during the pandemic would curl your hair, especially after rogue licensing groups “allowed” them to use music after they paid a fee, but weren’t told that those fees and “licenses” sold by 3rd party hooligans didn’t provide any real cover if the artist actually wanted to sue. BUT there have been zero lawsuits stemming from these infractions, so I honestly wouldn’t worry about it.
      Another option is that you calculate what you normally earn from a published work from a profit stand point, and that is covered by benefactors/crowd funding and you sell the music “at cost” ie: time and materials (or in the case of digits media, storage and back-up costs) that way one could argue that you’re not profiting from said works. But frankly, my opinion is to go with the 3rd option of just doing it, and fly under the radar.
