Aiden Jones also where there’s no feminist involved. You know the ones where they say “oh they’re too sexy, they need to be plus sized.” Even girls I know love this anime
Kill la Kill was breathtaking in the animation/story department to be honest.... it is probably one of my favourite animation styles next to Flowers of Evil or Birdy: The Mighty. Also, the animation in Me!Me!Me! was pretty damn good.
The Wise Guy It's just such a different style, kind of like early web animation with the paper puppet movement during gag scenes. However, even though I didn't like it at first (everything else was just fine, other than animation for me),it grew on me. To the point that I watched Ep 8 -23 in one night, and only slept for an hour because the Battery on my phone ran out. Then I went to finish ep 24. I think I should watch it again, anyway.
I'm surprised that Kill la Kill doesn't get praise for its backgrounds. People complain about digital painting, and Kill La Kill has backgrounds that were painted by hand, very detailed ones at that if you've seen them by themselves.
To quote Futurama "When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all." Some of the background shots in KLK are absolutely gorgerous to look at, but they're not there to be viewed on their own.
GoingGh0st Some people just think digital art is somehow easier or lazier, and while ctrl-z and transform tool are handy, it's obviously still demanding to make a good piece digitally as much as traditionally. Though a much more valid complaint I could imagine is most background art, which is now done digitally, looks all very clean and a boaring gradient infront. In other words they look too samey and boring. However the Bakemonogatari series has very distinct digital backgrounds.
I agree with this 100% I ended up watching transformers armada and notice the lack of movement that is described in this video I'm now watching it's continued season energon but they switch to a hybrid cgi and 2d animation and movement is drastically improved
Yeah, Mako is funnier in the dub. Ryuko and Satsuki's voice in eng fits them better imo. Ira sounds what I expected him to be in the dub and I love it.
@@foxtrotgaming4684 Pretty much everyone's voices fit them perfectly. Especially Mako, Ryuko, Satsuki, Ira and the rest of the Elite Four. Also that rich kid (Takarada) who piloted that giant crab in Osaka.
Kill la Kill was the very first anime I watched and I absolutely loved the animation. No other anime has giving me that same feeling since then. Sure, the style isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but that doesn’t make it bad.
how could anything even feel as good when your entry is from klk oh man if its me itd be like im getting used to eating rly expensive rare food as a baby and finding out most meat doesnt taste the same
It's like people are taking anime too seriously, and base quality on how perfect and shiny it is. KLK is aware that it's a cartoon, and makes it an absolute joy to watch because it recognizes the sheer amount of expression you can make in animations.
Exactly. When I first started watching I got caught up in whether certain things made sense or not. By the time I had watched like 3 or 4 episodes I realized none of it NEEDS to make sense. Just take things for what they are, and to have fun watching, because its a wacky show.
People bash on kill la kill because they watched the first episode and said it was all about panties and fan service and then left because they only watch high class anime.
xx_ixcoy_xx Exactly and the characters are always worried about it like fanart of them being fully naked wasnt already being made 3 seconds after the first airing of the show.
I don't understand the notion that "fan service" in anime can't be used for: -Comedic effect -Narrative development -Character development (Ryuko's initial denial of using Senketsu because the outfit was revealing, while Satsuki was the complete opposite, but then Ryuko accepting her sexiness.) -Or simply, to give off a nice, goofy atmosphere (No Game No Life)
I don't know why so many people I talk to about KLK (and Trigger in general) dislike the animation? Why do people love when things stick strictly to model?
Because people like boring stuff. Compare early Simpsons, where they would go crazy with the animation, to later Simpsons, where everything is sterile because it's always 100% "on-model." A lot of people would say that they prefer later Simpsons animation.
People love boring stuff because nothing happens in boring stuff requires effort to understand. People don't feel like being outsmarted by artists. That's why stupid things can often get insanely popular. The viewers can get cheap reassurance from shit shows. And their tastes is reaffirmed when they enjoy the same thing as everyone else does, thus anything that enthusiastically signals itself as a piece of greatest-common-factor is gonna work for them.
If you ever wondered why people cried "Kill La Kill is saving anime!" this is the reason. It went into a genre that had got too complacent and accepted a lot of mediocrity, then showed everyone "THIS is how you can do it!" I love KLK, I love Imaishi, and I love Trigger. They are heroes of TV animation today.
I'll say. Kill La Kill showed just how easy it was to merge genres that seemingly could not be merged like hardcore shonuen and magical girl. It showed that how easily you could make a female oriented show and have it appeal to both men and women. It showed that fanservice wasn't just limited to women and that men can get just as or even more fanservice-y than women. And it showed that fanservice can have importance in a story, both plot wise and theme wise.
***** Maybe. Or maybe you have too little faith in the anime community as after the hype for SAO vanished, people began realizing the show's flaws and mistakes. Even after the hype has died down for Kill La Kill, people are still calling a great anime with a lot of people trying to pass off bullshit reasons to dislike Kill La Kill like "To much fanservice" or "Shitty animation" being the majority of it's critics.
How can you even say that? Do you personally know every single simpleton that liked SAO well enough to claim that positive KLK reactions came from the same people?
***** Obviously not every single person who uttered the phrase has such a clear understanding, but it took off because enough critics recognised KLK as something special. This is kind of a pedantic argument, I was just trying to supplement the video by helping people to understand why the show is so revered.
over the top and absurd? definitely Gurren Lagann, also Space Patrol Luluco, Inferno Cop, FLCL, or just about anything else from Gainax or Trigger, aside from those maybe check out Etotama for absurdity and shattered fourth walls, Flip Flappers also gave me a similar vibe to some of Trigger's series
I think kill la kill is looked down on cuz of the fan service, so people find excuses to find why they dislike it besides the point, which is a shame cuz no show should be criticized so easily because of fan service.
I like KLK, and fully agree that its animation is leagues better than the generic crap that everybody seems to praise. However, I will admit that KLK is not without faults. The first half of the series is great. It's this silly, tongue-in-cheek sort of humor that is poking fun at generic, shonen/seinen anime and manga. They jammed it full of all these silly anime tropes and it's very clearly satirical. But then, it slowly transforms into the very thing it was making fun of. By the second half of the anime, the plot suddenly becomes super serious. These tropes and cliches that were previously satirical start feeling like they're taken very seriously. The anime became the very thing it was initially making fun of.
@@spartan456 What do you mean the show got serious? They were literally fighting a bunch of clothes that were attached to a large yarn barn that was going to cover the world and explode it. Tonally, it might appear to be serious. But its the same show, and I think it was even better because it added another layer of depth to by having such a silly and fun plot hidden underneath the facade of the serious mood. It's still a parody with that added satirical element of seriousness to contrast the absurd line of events. What better way to do this other than conjoining it with tropes and cliches, and making fun of it by demonstrating the ridiculousness of the plot in which it is attached to. It's very akin to deadpan humor. There are more than one way of maintaining its place as a parody, and the show would get very boring if it was just like the first half the whole way through. It's more subliminal than the first half, but it's still Kill La Kill.
+FierceCast isn't Kiznaiver a Trigger's attempt in making a story-centered anime ? i noticed that because most of their works always heavily depends on movements and creative sequences. Like Kill la Kill and Inferno Cop being silly over the top, even some of their anime that makes more sense like Witch Academia has that over the top influence on it.
FierceCast lol, i never said Kiznaiver is any better than the rest. Hell, it's probably one of the Trigger's show thatvi actually dropped for how boring it is (at least for me)
If there's one thing I got from Kill La Kill was exagerration. Not because it was over the top but due to the animators knew that not everyone viewing the anime was going to get subtle hints and they wanted everyone to be in the loop and not feel left out when something big was revealed. They could've easily dumbed it down so everyone could get it but they didn't and they did it spectacularly and in an enjoyable way. Kudos to Trigger.
I feel like Symphogear does a similar thing, if not quite to the same exaggerated level. The characters and scenes basically take all the best parts of the anime styles they come from and crank them up to eleven, but somehow it still works together. If you've never seen a lesbian magical girl scifi anime with surprisingly dark tones hidden under the unrelentingly optimistic protagonist, with everyone singing while they fight, you should really watch at least the first season. The second improves on the first in most aspects, and it escalates from there.
I thought the animation for Kill La Kill was incredible and I loved every second of it because it was either so fast, awesome and perfect looking that it gave you chills or so simple and stupid looking that it made you burst out laughing. In the entire series the only animation thing I didn't like was those 5 or so seconds of bad CG where it looks like Satsuki is ice skating or floating up the side of a building especially since the rest of that fight is so intense and well produced. (The scene I'm talking about is shown at 2:35)
Just watched Kill la Kill for the first time a few months ago, and holy shit people say that this has bad animation?! That is just nuts man, some of the best animation, and definitely the most creative animation I have ever seen.
the show seems good, but i really don't want to see any more of that red girl's tiny bras, that's for the pervs to enjoy, like seriously, why that small bras?
I love anime for it's story, not for _"Animation"_ all the time. I love how when (just by how something looks) you can tell a story. Not all the time we need to hear the charterers talk. _"Animation"_ can tell a *HECK* of a lot more for the story and how the charterers feel. Live action can't always do that. _"Animation"_ can play with the ideas of how you/the charterer on screen are supposed to be feeling at that time. But... unless you are a _"flawless actor,"_ it's going to be hard to do so. And it's not like a live action stores within a tv show are easy to do. Wait, there are people that don't like Kill la Kill's animation? That's strange to me since the only reason I want to watch it is the awesome visual style and animation... =|
1. They're wrong. 2. In addition to great visuals, there's a plethora of awesome characters, including one of anime's strongest female leads. And a bangin' soundtrack.

A lot of people were hesitant to admit they liked it because the fandom was massive and very intense (keeping in line with the themes of the show, it made the fans very hot-blooded). So it was quickly judged 'too mainstream' and slandered on sites like 4chan because they didn't like the fanbase around it. Same thing that happened with Undertale. Overexposure and overwhelming fans.
I am turning myself into a religious Studio Trigger follower because of this. I just love crazy animations like in TTGL, Panty and Stocking, Space Patrol Luluco, you name it. I aspire to animate like that in the future.
I absolutely LOVED the animation for Kill la Kill, and for the record, I first saw it in my ANIMATION CLASS, because my lecturer decided it was one of the best examples of modern animation to make it onto TV (alongside Madoka Magica but that's a whole other story). Like if you actually went and looked up all the animation styles used in this anime, you'd be blown away. From classic western to modern CGI to motion graphics, all combined into one style along with lovely background art which looks to be oil paintings? You literally have no idea how much work would have to be done. The timing in EVERY single scene was also on point, and believe me getting timing right in editing is HELL, especially with as many sounds and effects as they used. It was meant to be a nod to the humor of classic cartoons, as well as the style of modern anime. Also, in case some haven't noticed, there is a different set of animation for every single character in here. For example, Mako literally has multiple ridiculous, cartoonish sequences, but for Satsuki every scene she is in she's serious as heck. Go back and check out how everyone's animated. Because seriously, to call this animation lackluster and limited, you probably have never come near the study of animation.
You got to watch Kill la Kill... _and Madoka Magica... _*_in class?!_* The only way the class could have been better is if they included Rebellion, which while controversial for its ending, is praised for its art as much if not more than the show proper.
This anime is just top tier in general, its all good. Good story, good animation, good backgrounds, good characters, good character designs. Never have I ever experienced an anime where I had as much fun watching it as I did this one
KLK's character named Gamagori has one very interesting feature to his character: on every shot that he's in his size is always bigger than that of anyone else in the frame. He grows in size the more people they are in the shot, sometimes becoming a size of a house. It's supposed to be a metaphor to his strong-willed character when he's always stronger than anyone else, if not in power than at least in ego. I always loved that fact. People can criticize KLK all they want but i genuinely enjoyed the show, ESPECIALLY the awesome animation. It's a candy for eye, in all meanings of it.
I never knew that people had issues with Kill la Kill's animation. I always absolutely loved it for how vibrant it was, and how insane every moment seemed to be in the show.
kill la kill was always one of those shows that was very popular but also very popular to hate on, for imo all the wrong reasons. the animation as explained in this video being one of the big three, the other two being the fanservice and the show being "edgy" I think the fanservice criticism is silly because it's clearly played for laughs at the beginning. later it becomes an actual important part of the story, and by the end it's become so much of a non-issue that it's more interesting to look at the tiny bits of skin that ARE covered than the huge swaths that aren't. when you get to the end and virtually the entire cast is lying in a giant pile completely nude i think the last thing you're expected to feel is titillated the edgy complaint I always found hilarious because it only looks edgy if you take one glance and then forget about it. oh, black and red, there's blood, a sword, a dead father. okay that sounds pretty edgy, if you turn it off right there and don't get to the blood spraying out in implausibly goofy fountains, or the power of friendship delivered in batshit insane visual puns, all the bits about adopted family, or satan incarnate with a fluffy pink dress and parasol. like the vid said, it seems like alot of the shows major detractors just seem to be missing the point. if you don't like what the show is trying to do, then cool, but i feel like alot of people who rag on it think it's trying to do something else entirely.
The KLK visualiser style is why I keep watching it from Time to time. It's clear the ''stutter style'' is here go amplify the goofy scenes. Reminds me Guren Lagan. Edit : same studio x)
John Stonik true, but still a different studio. They abandoned Gainax and most of them came together to create Trigger, hence the similar animation style.
Try Gurren Lagann, and Little Witch Academia. They all have this same style and composition, explosive and bright feel, sun blooms, etc. I believe they're all done by the same animation director as well.
Okay but we all gotta admit, they reuse that one shot of Satsuki's high heel hitting the ground and making a loud step noise like 50 times, but i always laughed so maybe that was also intended
I liked Kill La Kill because it was genuinely hilarious in parts, not just because of the script & story (which was funny in its own right) but because of the visual comedy that's packed into just about every scene. I honestly believe you could watch Kill La Kill without sound and, while you'd probably wonder what the fuck was going on and why everybody was always naked and why Ragyo is jilling her own daughter (though to be fair that scene is still confusing even with sound) there'd still be plenty on screen to keep you engaged and to get a laugh out of. I can't make any comments about where it stands compared to a lot of anime since I haven't seen a huge number to compare it to but personally I enjoyed it for what it was; a fun show that doesn't really take itself seriously. Then again, I've never heard anyone criticise the animation of KLK. Also I would say that as much as I agree with your points, your tone in this video comes off a little condescending? Your analysis is interesting to listen to but I found it a little cringy when you were saying anyone who thought otherwise must be an idiot.
Makes me so sad that SAO was my first. Oh well, at least I followed it up with FMA:B, Kill la Kill, Gurren Laggan, OHSHC, and realized SAO wasn't that great.
There are moments when Kill la Kill goes insanely detailed. You've probably noticed these as the moments where people joked "there goes the animation budget." So I guess the policy was to spend the budget in such a horribly unbalanced way such that key moments spare no expense, and regular moments, well... the animation director has to get a little creative. And some could argue that its this combination of both high budget value scenes and creatively-used cheap scenes that make this show a joy to watch.
Kôito [コイト] Nah studio bones FTW bro almost everything they make I love and when I watch their shows I love the animation and art... boku no hero mob physcho #amazing FMA I'm just saying story and everything they make is just wow cowboy beebop come on now
Man i agree so much, i had to constantly pause Kill la kill to see the detail of the artwork or I would rewind it after every 10 seconds so I can remember the words and this is from someone who can decently pick up on Japanese, there is just so much movement and funny expressions
In the intervening years I've come to appreciate Kill la Kill even more. Nothing has matched up to its sheer energy of presentation. I love how so many things are portrayed figuratively rather than literally. It is making the best use of the VISUAL medium. I've rewatched the show, like, five times and I'm still noticing little details that I hadn't before. I've been pleasantly surprised how the new fighting game "Kill la Kill -IF-" has captured the energy of the fight scenes in the anime. The alternate story mode was pretty good; it's excellent by fighting game story standards.
studio GAinax who made FCLC and Gurren Lagann is the same team, for the most part, that went on to work on the newly founded studio Trigger... same people different studio...
Thank you! I was waiting for somebody to say something like this. Another anime that's gone through a similar animation style is the new Pokemon series, Sun and Moon. Unlike the previous generations of the series, Sun and Moon's animation is always on the move like Kill la Kill's and I don't understand why people hate that. To me, it could only help the series as it not only makes the artwork more fluid, but more consistent as well.
Watching it in 2021, it's better than 90% of the anime out there and has more unique and interesting animation than 95% of anime. The idea of the show it's to turn everything to 11 and watch it go boom and after 25 episodes, it was a great experience. It's not you FMA B somewhat easy to understand and appreciate anime, it has a lot of metaphors and character work behind that ecchi look, it has some deep themes. Till the end it's about letting go of the past, but appreciating that it existed, to feel good in your skin and to dare make your dreams come true. If you see its look and think it's a superficial TV show, you will lose one of the pieces of art in this genre. If this is what a passionate and independent animation studio can, we need more like Trigger and less generic isekai.
I completely sympathize with digi here. After taking traditional 2d animation about a year ago, i realized all the short cuts a lot of anime shows take to get away with less animation, the most noticeable being when the majority of the composition is taken up by the mouth of a character so that only the lip movement only has to be animated wich is one of the easiest and cheapest things to animate, especially since the majority of the time nothing dynamic is done with this. So now is irritates me to no end when I'm watching nothing but two characters standing completely still talking to each other for eternity. I'm looking at you, Fate/Stay Night! God that show was fucking boring as shit! The only reason i watched the entire thing was because i had enjoyed Fate/Zero so much but stay night had nowhere nearly as entertaining characters and engaging conversation to make up for it. Coincidentally i watch Little Witch Academia right after stay night and had this moment when i was watching it saying to myself, "Gods remember when anime was actually ANIMATED?!?!" It was such a cathartic experience it made me remember why i love anime and animation as a whole.
Mariana Mora I feel the same way about FSN. Fate Zero had so much more to offer than the main story it was a prequel to. There was a good amount of talking in FZ as well, but it felt much more warranted in that show where in FSN and UBW it just feels like cheap filler.
***** I understand what you're saying and yes it would be ridiculous for a character to be flailing all the damn time, but that's not what i have a problem with. As for checking my animation logic, I suggest you check yours as well. Animation is the illusion of movement. While it isn't always necessary to animate to convey movement, essentially what you're trying to create the illusion of is life itself and last I checked humans can make a wide array of various movement with various dynamic in their movements to portray that they are alive. I'm fully aware that Little Witch definitely had a lot less to accomplish than UBW but I still stand by my critique. I'm not saying that UBW is an anime with no animation, I'm saying is that after watching it it made me realize just how accustomed I've become as a view to see so little animation in anime as a whole. What I long to see more in anime is that for every character to be animated in such a way that gives them life. You don't need a character to be failing around and making erratic movements if that's not what the situation calls for. When characters talk as they often do in anime, they can be animated adjusting their posture, averting their eyes, their face can be grimacing or smiling, reacting in some way to the conversation going on. Heck even just blinking or a hair slightly moving is the minimum that can be done to show yes this character here is still alive and breathing. And these movements are small but they can add so much more personality and life into a moment like this instead of just having a static image that we're use to seeing most of the time in anime. Heck even just blinking can be enough. My quarrel is anime today places making the medium look amazingly pretty as possible but at the cost of having less actual animation. Because it would take so much more longer and more staff and overall more money to make an anime with the asthetic of UWB as fully animated as Little Witch Academia. And honestly the aesthetic of a show is not what makes a show great. Of course I'm not saying that its not important. But because of the technology we have now its easier than ever to make a show look beautiful so why instead of focusing on making the look of a show out of this world we focus on making the feel of a show out of this world. Does that make sense?
ew275x Absolutely, the animation of back then can't even come to compare with what can be done now. But its clearly evident that today the industry places aesthetic on this gaint pedestal like its the most important thing that matters in a show. When in reality as long as a show looks "nice" (not even beautiful just nice) I'll watch it.
Nui being 2d is also an allusion to her role as grand couturier. Dressmakers and fashion designers often use paper designs of clothing and overlay them onto a human sketch to come up with outfits or layers on a dress / suit. See 3:53 and.... damn i cant find it again but theres a shot where nui literally just turns into a 2d paper dress ala substitution jutsu
So much about kill la kill was done so right, it's baffling. They tell an interesting story with compelling themes with an amazing soundtrack and beautiful animation as well as amazing voice acting (for both the original jp version and the dub) and it was all done on a shoestring budget.
I have grown up watching anime in the early 90s, and Kill la Kill was one of the first anime in a long time that I was just blown away by the animation style and just watching it. Between all of the visual gags that make fun of other things other anime have done that have become popular, some of their own gags that wouldn't be as dramatic if they didn't do them the way they had, the over all fact that the show doesn't take itself seriously, and their ability to also do absolute eye candy moments as well made this one of the most fun series I have seen in years. The only other animes I can think of right now that impressed me as much with it's ability for true movement and stand out animation style were Cowboy Bebop, and even playing on it more, Samurai Champloo. And they were both by the same studio. But even they had moments where the characters stand still doing nothing but talk.
The animation style is what drew me to Kill la Kill in the first place, I took a break from watching it for a few weeks and watched other anime, but even after that time had passed the animation style is so unique and iconic, making it one of the many things I loved about the show
Dig, thank you for making this video cause I feel the EXACT same way, and I was planning on bringing this up in some way shape or form. I ADORE the shot of the teacher just moving horizontally, then vertically and then falling so lamely like that! It made laugh so hard. NO WAY was that not done on purpose, as you said, it's a joke that was executed really well. All of the animation presses all the emotional buttons and is animated deliberately and inventively. So thank you. This video was great
While it's easy to get sucked into judging something for aesthetic, it's flatout ignorant to conclude a show's worth because of it. I don't even really like the show, but from what I've watched it seemed like a tremendously fun show. Besides, NOTHING beats little animation tricks and visual gags for the sake of a joke. That's usually when I laugh the hardest.
Same here. From the opening scene in the first episode, I noticed how cartoonish the animation was and its style way different than any anime I watched. I couldn't help but laugh at most of these scenes and fell in love with this show because of this.
I distinctly remember now one episode that had comedically limited animation, it's the one where the entire thing is just them trying to get to school, and there's barely any . . . Movement in the episode, and it's played up to such a ridiculous amount that it doesn't even matter. This show is great.
Yeah, why don't we all just agree with Digi, like mindless sheep and i'm sure this fanbase will become a good old circlejerk because that's always fun isn't it?
samturret I wasn't talking about fair discussion - I was talking about people who are so offended by the fact that Digi said everyone who can't appreciate the graphic in Kill la Kill are stupid. Your world and self esteem should not break that easily just because of that. Chill out. Just take the joke and move on.
samturret Well that's your problem - I'm immune for that stuff and I can laugh to that like many others. If I would be offended and pissed off every time I see and hear stuff like that I would be freakin' bald - I don't have time to worry about this kind of bullshit.
No problem, should you really want to get into Davoo, there is a three hour long video, of Digibro interviewing him on the podcast channel "The Pro Crastinators".
I wouldn't really call that 2D object flipping inventive, if even all that original. You might barely see it in animation, but merely due to the fact that it rarely fits the style of humor. The idea itself is quite simple, and extensively used in Paper Mario for example, which is all about the "2D Paper Figure Theatre" metaphor.
I haven't seen it applied in the way KLK does it to make a character menacing. This technique is right at home in a comedic scene, but the way Nui uses it in serious contexts helps to emphasize how weird and off-putting she is.
Not my personal favorite, but certainly one of the very best both in terms of narrative, animation and HYPE! (Though i gotta say i'm even more partial to their 1st encounter, on the ground that Satsuki basically spells the whole show out and some people still didn't get many of it's themes).
I'm a person who has a hectic college schedule but still somehow finds time to watch anime. And since there are a lot of them, I usually don't have time to rewatch any. Except for Kill La Kill. I've never rewatched any anime before. But rewatching Kill La Kill was the best feeling ever. Every scene has meaning that you probably wouldn't have noticed when you watched the first time. Kill La Kill was already one of my most favorite anime. Rewatching it only strengthened the feeling.
+Vijay RAjasekar I'm in high school. Once I finish the currently airing anime, I'm gonna start finishing an entire anime series every week, watching 3 episodes every day, probably at night.
Animator here, actually fun info, the way that paper scene is done is using mesh and free transform effects on on pre drawn frames. You can actually see this used in other shows for quick paper effects, take the paper expression change effects in the blend S opening. It’s also how I learned to do this effect for transitions. It’s pretty fun to do actually!
i 100% agree. especially the parts about the limited animation being great and deliberate, and that most TV anime kind of looks boring and samey. i fell in love with Hiroyuki Imaishi's work after watching Gurren Lagann, because how unique and visually interesting they are. it seriously blew my mind when i first saw people saying Kill la Kill has bad animation. like did we even watch the same show? i couldn't ask for a more interesting TV anime to just look at.
I wholeheartedly agree in this feeling of confusion when people bring up limited animation as bad animation. Did it convey the feeling it was supposed to? Then by my definition it was great animation. No matter how many frames per second was drawn. An even better example for me was when I watched His and Her Circumstances. I realised many times that for the past several episodes I had been literally been watching a slideshow of stills and still I wasn't bored. Compare that with many works by Katsuhiro Otomo or Rintaro. Many times their fixation with how many fps are produced gets in the way of immersion. It gets distracting and almost lands in a kind of uncanny valley for me. By the way, a couple of months ago I stumbled over a big behind the scenes video for Kill La Kill and was shocked to see it reveal how many shots used 3D cgi models for the animation. But since the style of limited animation was so much what they were going for they seemingly haphazardly bent the rendered footage to seemlessly fit the intended style. So when people bring up CGI in anime I will make points about the CGI in Kill La Kill. Because while in most shows it sticks out like a sore thumb, chances are that you didn't even expect some scenes in KlK to be entirely CGI.
I just finally watched Kill La Kill a few days ago and tbh the animation ain’t rlly my taste but I got use to it and I learned to actually rlly like it. I absolutely love this show it was absolutely amazing
Maybe it's just me or maybe I'm a cheap casual pleb, but I don't think that moving all the time means it looks better. Sure, it is great for the team to do what they want, but personally I feel that the show is a bit too fast and noisy for being able to enjoy anything.
It depends on the show. The inventive and wacky style of Kill La Kill works because it is a fast, noisy and ridiculous show. It has no place being animated in a more still and traditional manner. While a drama or an uncomedic action show has no place being animated like Kill La Kill.
put it this way... trigger is a studio that mixes the wackyness and movement of classic american cartoon, down to its trippy physics, and combines it with modern day japanese anime character design... to create an unique style signature animation style that goes well with the over the top and insane plots and situations Trigger's anime are written as... pushing the boundaries of moe and non-moe anime... (moe in this instance is referring to the signature big eyes, gorgeous looking art-style prevalent in modern day anime)... sure there are bound to be people that dislike it, but i see it as refreshing and i welcome similar shows in the future...
I would argue that Kill la Kill's animation is inconsistent. But it is also extremely stylized and, when it isn't extremely high quality, it has a tendency to look pretty low quality. Intentionally, mind you, and in a very stylized way, but it is still there.
Trigger isn't alien to working under budgetting constrictions. Kill La Kill was definitely that, but they developed a series in mind to work with that limitation. So, I wouldn't say people who think Kill la Kill has bad animation is wrong, because they aren't. Likewise, people who think it's good aren't wrong either. This is the intention and the flavour of the series.
I gotta say thanks for pointing out how poorly tv anime is animated . I feel that a lot of anime fans dont notice these things. I'm huge animation fan and it's always uncomfortable for me to explain to my friends when i dont like their favorite anime show. It's been hard for me to explain to them in a way that actually makes sense. Most of the time they just think i'm being snooty or trying to make them seem like they have bad taste. To each their own honestly, but all those things you mentioned about TV anime drives me nuts. I find it so boring to watch. Inventive animation is where it's at for me and the reason why i love watching cartoons in the first place. If an anime is more about the story than the animation then that just seems lazy to me. I can read the manga and enjoy the frames at my own pace. To me animation is about the delivery/performance in same way that comedy and acting is.
Kill la Kill is hilarious to me because it went from being hyped as the saviour of anime to being overhyped garbage to being actually amazing and have artistic value
This was enlightening, thank you! I read as well that their animation doesnt have as many between frames as regular anime, same as the Showa era anime who couldnt afford so many, but they did it as a stylistic choice. very cool to learn about their inspirations
Ok, after just finishing the a night ago, I had my doubts every episode or two about the animation, but your explanation, combined with the splicing in of some really lackluster animation in this video, I am utterly convinced that Kill la Kill's animation is one of the best I've ever seen, like you said, not entirely in the professional quality that some shows have, but in the sense of direction and filmmaking skill that is so clearly presented in this show.
I really do think that people don’t understand what animation is “for.” They really do believe that anime should strive to be a series of context-optional sakuga WEBMs strung together by static conversational scenes.
YOUVE NEVER WATCHED KILL LA KILL D:!!!!!! OMFGGGGG, but seriously go watch it , ive watched over 80 anime and kill la kill which was one of the first , is still my favorite to this day. and the plot....oh the plot D:
Okay, while i agree with you on most of this video, the comment that One punch is just crammed with boring static scenes i think is incorrect. The reason there are only sparks of awesome animation is to show his character, and how mundane he sees everything when not met with a worthy opponent. Though I agree other animes are just filled with static scenes and filler, One punch has a reason for it. Other than that great video!
Rewatch the sequence, after one punch man (i forgot his true name lmao) shot you can see genos talking. And this is where digi was going, genos' face is entirely still, except for the lips. But yeah criticizing one punch man's lack of facial expression or fluidity is just as stupid as critizing klk for it's wacky animation.
I was waiting for you to talk about those little mako scenes where she raises her hands and the freaking animators just animated her doing random things, those mako scenes always gets me

Wait, people had a problem with Kill La Kill's animation?
I always thought it was amazing
It is amazing. The people who complain probably only watch A1 or Kyoani - the sparkly side of anime.
People cant get the jokes and think they did the animation like that becouse the studio lacked funds..
Kill la Kill was breathtaking in the animation/story department to be honest.... it is probably one of my favourite animation styles next to Flowers of Evil or Birdy: The Mighty.
Also, the animation in Me!Me!Me! was pretty damn good.
Same.... I kinda like it because it's different than other animes.
The Wise Guy
It's just such a different style, kind of like early web animation with the paper puppet movement during gag scenes.
CornishCreamtea07 Kill La Kill has some of the best backgrounds I've seen in anime, they're gorgeous.
To quote Futurama "When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all."
Some of the background shots in KLK are absolutely gorgerous to look at, but they're not there to be viewed on their own.
CornishCreamtea07 wait. Why do people complain about digital painting?
Are we all gonna ignore the fact that kill la kill had an amazing dub
Sariol hell nah, it’s godly!
Dude the dub fucking rips. Its awesome.
Yeah, Mako is funnier in the dub. Ryuko and Satsuki's voice in eng fits them better imo. Ira sounds what I expected him to be in the dub and I love it.
Some of nonon's lines hit better in the subbed version, but overall dub is best
@@foxtrotgaming4684 Pretty much everyone's voices fit them perfectly. Especially Mako, Ryuko, Satsuki, Ira and the rest of the Elite Four. Also that rich kid (Takarada) who piloted that giant crab in Osaka.

What? Huh?
It's like people are taking anime too seriously, and base quality on how perfect and shiny it is. KLK is aware that it's a cartoon, and makes it an absolute joy to watch because it recognizes the sheer amount of expression you can make in animations.
Dwok The Rayne Jonsohn This ^ couldn't have put it better myself!
Exactly. When I first started watching I got caught up in whether certain things made sense or not. By the time I had watched like 3 or 4 episodes I realized none of it NEEDS to make sense. Just take things for what they are, and to have fun watching, because its a wacky show.
People bash on kill la kill because they watched the first episode and said it was all about panties and fan service and then left because they only watch high class anime.
high class anime that only shows panties and fan service 90% of the time*
xx_ixcoy_xx Exactly and the characters are always worried about it like fanart of them being fully naked wasnt already being made 3 seconds after the first airing of the show.
KingCreepa yea , some people just cant appreciate good animes like kill la kill
totaly agree.
I don't understand the notion that "fan service" in anime can't be used for:
-Comedic effect
-Narrative development
-Character development (Ryuko's initial denial of using Senketsu because the outfit was revealing, while Satsuki was the complete opposite, but then Ryuko accepting her sexiness.)
-Or simply, to give off a nice, goofy atmosphere (No Game No Life)
I don't know why so many people I talk to about KLK (and Trigger in general) dislike the animation? Why do people love when things stick strictly to model?
Sheeple
They are just there to spark controversy
or you know people can have different opinions that’s a possibility
If you ever wondered why people cried "Kill La Kill is saving anime!" this is the reason. It went into a genre that had got too complacent and accepted a lot of mediocrity, then showed everyone "THIS is how you can do it!"
I love KLK, I love Imaishi, and I love Trigger.
*****
Maybe.
Do you personally know every single simpleton that liked SAO well enough to claim that positive KLK reactions came from the same people?
good point , i dont think he knows everyone who liked sao i think you might have got him there
***** Obviously not every single person who uttered the phrase has such a clear understanding, but it took off because enough critics recognised KLK as something special. This is kind of a pedantic argument, I was just trying to supplement the video by helping people to understand why the show is so revered.
I loved Kill La Kill's over-the-top absurd nature. The animation pairs perfectly with that.

definitely Gurren Lagann, also Space Patrol Luluco, Inferno Cop, FLCL, or just about anything else from Gainax or Trigger, aside from those maybe check out Etotama for absurdity and shattered fourth walls, Flip Flappers also gave me a similar vibe to some of Trigger's series
I think kill la kill is looked down on cuz of the fan service, so people find excuses to find why they dislike it besides the point, which is a shame cuz no show should be criticized so easily because of fan service.
Shaded Oscar highschool dxd gets a lot of praise even though it shows BARE BOOBS, why isn’t this show praised I wonder?
John Stonik so is Kill la kill, so it’s a moot point
@@spartan456
What do you mean the show got serious?
The fan service is nice tho.

WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF IT!?
Trigger have made the best anime for me!
The lesson I learnt was trigger always saves anime
Kiznaiver wasn't anything special tho
They will with Little Witch Academia tho
+FierceCast isn't Kiznaiver a Trigger's attempt in making a story-centered anime ? i noticed that because most of their works always heavily depends on movements and creative sequences. Like Kill la Kill and Inferno Cop being silly over the top, even some of their anime that makes more sense like Witch Academia has that over the top influence on it.
+harits andhika I get what you mean. I just stated that while Kiznaiver was good, it wasn't anything like their big hits
Ya know, somehow, it has been a year and 2 months, I have yet to watch the very last episode.

@@yog-sothoth7718 LMAO he is def missing tf
KLK's character named Gamagori has one very interesting feature to his character:
on every shot that he's in his size is always bigger than that of anyone else in the frame.
I always absolutely loved it for how vibrant it was, and how insane every moment seemed to be in the show.
kill la kill was always one of those shows that was very popular but also very popular to hate on, for imo all the wrong reasons. the animation as explained in this video being one of the big three, the other two being the fanservice and the show being "edgy"
I think the fanservice criticism is silly because it's clearly played for laughs at the beginning. later it becomes an actual important part of the story, and by the end it's become so much of a non-issue that it's more interesting to look at the tiny bits of skin that ARE covered than the huge swaths that aren't. when you get to the end and virtually the entire cast is lying in a giant pile completely nude i think the last thing you're expected to feel is titillated
the edgy complaint I always found hilarious because it only looks edgy if you take one glance and then forget about it. oh, black and red, there's blood, a sword, a dead father. okay that sounds pretty edgy, if you turn it off right there and don't get to the blood spraying out in implausibly goofy fountains, or the power of friendship delivered in batshit insane visual puns, all the bits about adopted family, or satan incarnate with a fluffy pink dress and parasol.
like the vid said, it seems like alot of the shows major detractors just seem to be missing the point. if you don't like what the show is trying to do, then cool, but i feel like alot of people who rag on it think it's trying to do something else entirely.
Wraith lol people thought kill la kill was trying to be edgy.😂😂
The KLK visualiser style is why I keep watching it from Time to time. It's clear the ''stutter style'' is here go amplify the goofy scenes.

Okay but we all gotta admit, they reuse that one shot of Satsuki's high heel hitting the ground and making a loud step noise like 50 times, but i always laughed so maybe that was also intended
I think it was probably intentional, just like Mako's thing she always does with her hands and pose. It's a trope of the characters.

Understandable have a nice day.
As an animator this show makes me so happy for exactly the reasons you've stated. You can tell when the animators are having a blast.
Kill La Kill has a special place in my heart. It was one of the first animes I have ever watched (along with Devil is a Part Timer).
Glue Although I'm not new to anime, those two shows among the first on my netflex saturday line-up.
Glue Same! Great firsts!
Glue ikr
Makes me so sad that SAO was my first. Oh well, at least I followed it up with FMA:B, Kill la Kill, Gurren Laggan, OHSHC, and realized SAO wasn't that great.
BlueRiging, it means you can only go up! :))
If one thing Kill La Kill is good at was animation, look at those ridicolous fast fighting scene and explosion.
Trigger is literally the best
Kôito [コイト] lol....no
Shadowtechnik lol. Yes. Their animation style is outstanding & the most distinctive.
inb4 "little witch academia is the show that saved anime!1!!!"
Kôito [コイト] Nah studio bones FTW bro almost everything they make I love and when I watch their shows I love the animation and art... boku no hero mob physcho #amazing FMA I'm just saying story and everything they make is just wow cowboy beebop come on now
Kôito [コイト] 3hz has been far more interesting
Man i agree so much, i had to constantly pause Kill la kill to see the detail of the artwork or I would rewind it after every 10 seconds so I can remember the words and this is from someone who can decently pick up on Japanese, there is just so much movement and funny expressions
i have about a bajillion screenshots and meme images saved from when it was airing... good times.
"Yeah, that's why I chopped em off, dipshit."
FLCL is the OG of wacky animation from the same guys.
FLCL, Gurren Lagann, and KLK, Gainax+Trigger know how to make things exciting n wacky.
studio GAinax who made FCLC and Gurren Lagann is the same team, for the most part, that went on to work on the newly founded studio Trigger... same people different studio...
Tora Hibiki That's why I grouped em together with a + sign.
ArceusDX oh I wasn't referencing to you m8.. but the OP.. sorry
Tora Hibiki Oh that's okay
I love you.
Kill la Kill is love
+shotglassanhero And life.
KLK is everything
+Константин Матвеев The beginning and the end, the question and the answer.
Still not as good as TTGL, but then again most things don't even come close to that show.
Mariana Mora
It's a good thing we're getting more Little Witch Academia from Trigger in 2017. :3

Kill la Kill might be many things, but lazily animated is NOT one of them.
You ate, without a doubt, one of my favorite anime critics :'3 keep up the good work
I normally don't point out spelling and grammar errors, but this is hilarious.
I realize the "r" and "t" keys are right next to each other, but this is still hilarious. :D
Okay, I have to reply to this just to stay subscribed to the comments chain.
I'm sorry, I've been drinking X'D
Drinking makes you a vore!? How do most of your dates end? Are you a Preying Mantis?
Try watching Redline.
ARandomGuy Okies! ^.^ I'll add it to my list of show to watch! Thanks!

This video was great
oh fuck i accidentally clicked on a anime video rip my homepage
Studio Trigger is definitely my favorite anime studio
While it's easy to get sucked into judging something for aesthetic, it's flatout ignorant to conclude a show's worth because of it. I don't even really like the show, but from what I've watched it seemed like a tremendously fun show. Besides, NOTHING beats little animation tricks and visual gags for the sake of a joke. That's usually when I laugh the hardest.
illitero HOLY JESUS GUYS! I FOUND SOMEONE WHO'S *NOT* A BUTTHURT LITTLE BRAT! You, mister, give me hope
I thought kill la kills animation was great, I loved how colourful and quirky it was.
Stands out completely from other anime, to a point where I find it hard to fully immerse myself into.
*Read some of the comments* Wow, people surely take everything way too seriously than they should have... Good video Digi.
Chill out. Just take the joke and move on.
ladywithpinkglasses I fail to see how that's a joke.
samturret Well that's your problem - I'm immune for that stuff and I can laugh to that like many others. If I would be offended and pissed off every time I see and hear stuff like that I would be freakin' bald - I don't have time to worry about this kind of bullshit.
samturret Wow, you're sad person. And yeah, I laughed my ass off!
I already thought Trigger made the best-looking Stuff but now it makes even more sense
I adored this show's animation all the way through- maybe not quite because of the super-detailed logic you gave, but more shallow versions of that.
its amazing by just looking on Davoos MAL you can kinda guess what video they might release next xD
TheChristakisdx who's Davoo ?
Digis editor and close friend, he also has his own channel named TheDavoo.
Max Mustermann ow thanks
No problem, should you really want to get into Davoo, there is a three hour long video, of Digibro interviewing him on the podcast channel "The Pro Crastinators".
Link to his mal?
I wouldn't really call that 2D object flipping inventive, if even all that original.
You might barely see it in animation, but merely due to the fact that it rarely fits the style of humor.
The idea itself is quite simple, and extensively used in Paper Mario for example, which is all about the "2D Paper Figure Theatre" metaphor.
LinkEX adding to your comment, flash animators were using this method since 2005~ or something.
I think that the point is that it is inventive for anime. Specifically TV anime.
+Sir Chuckles That IS the point, and it is hilarious how certain people did not understand it. Digi clearly stated it in the video.
I haven't seen it applied in the way KLK does it to make a character menacing. This technique is right at home in a comedic scene, but the way Nui uses it in serious contexts helps to emphasize how weird and off-putting she is.
i had no idea that people *didn't* like trigger's animation on KLK, i loved that anime.
1:13 That soldier face in the back though
Dont make fun of Biggus Dickus's cousin Flaccidus Dickus.
Ryuko vs. Satuski 2 is my favorite scene of animation.
The first 3 episodes are possible one of the greatest introductions to an anime.
shotglassanhero oh they are.
Not my personal favorite, but certainly one of the very best both in terms of narrative, animation and HYPE! (Though i gotta say i'm even more partial to their 1st encounter, on the ground that Satsuki basically spells the whole show out and some people still didn't get many of it's themes).
KLK may be a top 10 show.
tfw your top 10 is mostly pre 2000 anime shows
Trigger never fails when it comes to animation
"Fun things are fun". Yui's wisdom never fails to amaze me.
Damn I need to watch this show again
Insomniac64 you should
I'm a person who has a hectic college schedule but still somehow finds time to watch anime.
It’s pretty fun to do actually!
klk has the one of the best action scenes ever in anime.
i 100% agree. especially the parts about the limited animation being great and deliberate, and that most TV anime kind of looks boring and samey. i fell in love with Hiroyuki Imaishi's work after watching Gurren Lagann, because how unique and visually interesting they are. it seriously blew my mind when i first saw people saying Kill la Kill has bad animation. like did we even watch the same show? i couldn't ask for a more interesting TV anime to just look at.
you've just convinced me to watch kill la kill
Good
And Digi continues to spread the great gospel of the practical perfection that is Kill la Kill and studio Trigger.
Well, I mean, the Monogatari series is 95% a slideshow with amazing and creative artwork and directing choices.
How can anyone hate this!? This anime is awesome!
NUUUUDDDIIISSSTTT BEEEEEAAAAAACCCCHHHH
TRUEEEEE
Just seeing these clips from Kill la Kill makes me happy and want to re-watch it.
I knew I loved Kill la Kill for a reason. Remember kids: there's a difference between limitations and deliberate artistic intent.
But that's fine if people world like to spend a shit-tun of money just to make a tv show with a grate story. _Ya..._ I get that not all shows with great stories have a shit-tun of money in the budget and still they have in the show a great story. _But..._ some of the shows are daytime tv shows. (not all) _"Animation"_ does not have to be good to tell a good story. It's just that I would rather prefer _"Animation"_ over live action shows any day.
_And animated movies not made by Pixar/Disney, I'm just not going to add Pixar/Disney to the mix of movies that are good, just cuz there mostly all good._
I just finally watched Kill La Kill a few days ago and tbh the animation ain’t rlly my taste but I got use to it and I learned to actually rlly like it. I absolutely love this show it was absolutely amazing
Sure it is inventive, but I'd doubt it for looking/ visually pleasing
Incubator QB So it's more of a personal preference thing for you then, because I happen to find it pleasing and awesome.
...What?
Yeah... and "inconsistency" adds a lot to the kinetic nature of the show.
6 years later and your defense still hold up.
To me animation is about the delivery/performance in same way that comedy and acting is.
kyro youie i know this too, animation fan brother
Kill la Kill is hilarious to me because it went from being hyped as the saviour of anime to being overhyped garbage to being actually amazing and have artistic value
This was enlightening, thank you!
I read as well that their animation doesnt have as many between frames as regular anime, same as the Showa era anime who couldnt afford so many, but they did it as a stylistic choice.
very cool to learn about their inspirations
This is ONE of the reasons why Kill la Kill is my favourite anime of all time, and I've watched and finished over 400 series.
I really love the shot of ryuko pushing mako out of frame with the scissor.
OKAY THAT'S IT! I'm going to watch Kill la Kill NOW.
This is my favorite anime and the animation style only backs that up.
I really do think that people don’t understand what animation is “for.” They really do believe that anime should strive to be a series of context-optional sakuga WEBMs strung together by static conversational scenes.
Alright...... Maybe I should watch this.
I say give it a shot. The "fan service" really just exists to show characters' view on it, and add to the insanity.
YOUVE NEVER WATCHED KILL LA KILL D:!!!!!! OMFGGGGG, but seriously go watch it , ive watched over 80 anime and kill la kill which was one of the first , is still my favorite to this day. and the plot....oh the plot D:
xx_ixcoy_xx Over 80 anime?
Nothing to boast about with such a low power level. ;)
Cruz Gonzalez lol yea ik , just wanted to say it though, imagine if ive only watched like 10? xD
Yup, you should. It's excellent. :)
Other than that great video!
rather an excuse for it,a s other characters don't have a reason and still look static
Mako Mankanshoku: The greatest "best friend" character ever made!
Kill LA Kill is a super funny show when I'm sad this show makes my happy.
Preach. Kill la kill is a masterpiece in so many ways.
I was waiting for you to talk about those little mako scenes where she raises her hands and the freaking animators just animated her doing random things, those mako scenes always gets me
kill la kill was awesome. One of the best shows ever.
kill la kill is the shit... such a good show.
