- Finally here. A Pair of Stihl Ms 881 chainsaws pully ported hit the dyno.
On this video will be a quick teardown, full machine work, squishband and base. Port layout, porting, and reassembly. Then they get on the dyno.
See just how much more power can be found from the most powerful production saw already. Tree service, Fallers, Loggers, Arborist can all use some more power!

I’m with you Will… I want all the information that I can get. They tell these guys to make short videos to hold peoples attention but it kinda seems to me that the chainsaw world guys don’t fit that mold…if they like how a guy teaches and shows his work we’ll watch everything to the end to see what tips and tricks we can learn. I also love to find a great guy to watch do tear downs …because if I’ve got to rebuild a model that I’m not familiar with…I can watch him tear down a saw and repeat his procedures and save myself a lot of time and effort! 👍😁

Paveen that’s what I’m saying also! He does it the right way…or basically the way that I’m now going to aspire to be able to provide a client. The clean and concise before and after data showing the gains made over the RPM range is very professional… he’s definitely one of the most professional porter’s that I’ve been able to see. I’m definitely convinced that providing the dyno information for your clients is a huge part of doing this business properly and professionally. There’s a lot of us guys who can get gains from an engine…this guy can include your printed out document showing your power curve … high lighting your gains on paper on a graph!!! Dyno Joe is my new porter hero!! 😂😂😂😂. He also doesn’t go way overboard ripping the exhaust port out without any intake enlargement like several popular guys do… in my exhaust most exhaust ports are too big to start and definitely don’t need to get enlarged more…! 😂😂😂😂. Saw one of those oem 288’s that you sent over… very neat!!!

Outstanding work sir! As an Echo repair specialist I can state with certainy that even though this is a Stihl saw you have a solid understanding of every aspect of two stroke theory and operation not to mention your experience is very obvious. There's another channel (Tinmans) that is a cool channel but he is more along the lines of having fun by experimenting BUT he has made inaccurate statements and claims. You are in a class by yourself sir! There's a Chinese proverb that states, "without no data your chatter don't matter". This is where you shine! You have the data to back your claims. I would even go as far as saying that your work could be classified as a scientific setting like in a research facility. Would love to hear your backstory and your experience. Keep up the outstanding work and thanks for sharing! Your skill level and understanding is on another level. ✌
Personally, I like the long format videos where you take the time to explain as much of the process as you can within reason, of course. Also, I like how the cinematography is progressing and you seem to be getting more comfortable with the camera. Keep ‘em coming brother!

Jokes aside, having the dyno is a Godsend man, the numbers don’t lie. And when you’re gaining 1.5+ cutting torque, that’s money well spent for this tree company. It’ll save them time and money. It’s an investment!
100 hp and 30lbs would be very wild....

You don't need to speed things up, the pace of the video is fine. Maybe figure out how to get good closeups of chamfers etc. Those saws should be able to pull long bars in big wood. Love the digital degree wheel.

I am still trying to learn video/lighting/editing. I plan to step up those areas each time. Trying to gather all the lighting and film gear still. These saws were built with that long bar pull in mind. Heavy piston and limited rpm coil. No reason to try and push power up high.

I see you take the time for your mods and work accurately! love to see you working on the lathe as beiing myself a professional cnc machinist. A lot of people don't know how much you can destroy on durabilty when your bore is'nt perfect in line. The video was not to long, some things could get a bit more of explanation. I think it is good to make video's with one mod at the time, because porting a saw is to difficult to show in one video

Feel free to reach out "before" you get in over your head porting. Little things can go a long way. Muffler mod, gasket delete, and a little bit of widening is a great first step.

@@dynojoemods2764 I was really inspecting your porting work in these couple of videos. I know that you’re very conscious about the saw’s longevity being that we are building serious work saw’s here that need to start and idle perfectly all day every day firstly and get a decent power gain without sacrificing longevity. I live the way that you’re careful with your exhaust port window’s and that you don’t blow them out too far. I see a lot of porter’s who expand their exhaust ports a little too much…I haven’t seen any real gains from that so I’m usually good with the exhaust port volume… I compare the intake volume and the exhaust volume and take it from there. Of all the porting work I’ve seen done over the past 10 years if I was going to pay someone else to do port work on one of my saw’s I’d be sending them to you. Your grinding is solid and good quality and you have the dyno to show your before and after data…it’s not “it feels stronger” there’s cold hard facts involved. I’ve got a couple saw’s that I’d like to get put on the old dyno myself at some point…. I’m seriously thinking about trying that tachometer….

To answer your question about speeding it up during indicating, I'm hoping you make a lot more videos, you could make a dedicated video for some of the lengthy setups like indicating and tear down and when it gets to the time laps you could add a link if anyone wants to see the detailed version.

Wow the stock numbers on the 881 (120cc I believe) are nearly the same HP wise and identical torque wise to the 92cc 592xp stock as far as the peak numbers go. The 592 is pretty hot from the factory though so I doubt you can gain much from porting one of them

Great video. Also, regarding Dominator. Not a fan. If you cut in even slightly humid conditions, its inevitable to get crank rust after awhile since this thing is one of the few oils with literally ZERO rust inhibitors. Every time I opened a saw that used this for over a year or so had rusted crank, and not just spots here and there, the entire thing was brown. Other builders confirm similar things on arboristsite.

I've used it the last 3 years in Michigan we get pretty humid. Have not seen any rust. But I will keep a look out for it. Maybe they changed the formula, or something to do with ethanol in the fuel.

I have a new ms 881. Haven’t made a cut yet. It will be used for slabbing and bucking. I’d love to have this done to my saw. Already ordered a bark box. What does this cost to port and dyno? Thanks and great video

EBay. It is just a generic mandrel. They have a couple different sizes and shapes.

No kits, would have to ship the entire saw.
Being you just put these together, I'm assuming both saws will wake up a little once those rings seat and they start getting broken in? Or are the rings already seated from running them stock, and being that you just modified existing cylinder head there is no seat time? Sorry I don't know much about the stuff.
I would expect another 2-5% once fully broken in. Everything still needs time to seat. Normally 8-12 tanks of use.

A little bit of both. Power takes fuel to make. Stock does a good job retaining the excess inside. Once modified efficiency goes up to make power from the same displacement. But I'm not sure how much fuel is also wasted doing so.
Once i hear back from the owners I will know for sure some models are harder on fuel after mods, but also make more power and production too. I would say 90% use more fuel than stock. Most love the extra power, before ever mentioning the amount of fuel used.

The big Echo isnt quite in the same league as these modern work saws.
Need to get pretty wild with the big Echo for it to run above the 10hp level. But I bet it can run all day for the next 20 years...

Yes, that is normally what I do. I am currently booked until the end of April. So I am not taking any new work at this time.

I am not currently taking new port work. Maybe spring/summer.
Why don't the saw come like this from the factory? Any major drawback? 25% is pretty huge.
Factory has to meet emissions, and a bunch of other little hoops.
The first 20-40% is generally pretty safe for saw life span. 50%+ is getting pretty radical for something you plan to work every day.

More power equals much less engine life

These exhausts are way to loud for normal use. No hearing protection can bring you back to safe levels…. Not sure if more power is worth being deaf :)
Awesome content, but as far as the different mufflers - your comparison is worthless. You've compared two different mufflers on two different saws that are "similar". Now swap the mufflers to the opposing saws and run it again...3 times each way...then compare. You could take two new saws out of their boxes and they'll have a 3% difference if you compare them with ONE run.
I had zero intentions to compare mufflers. Those happened to be what the customers wanted. Hard telling what actually made the small difference.
On stock saws those covers are so close to each other. Whichever a person prefers is the better cover.
