  • What IS the best charcoal for grilling? This week, Colin is going in for a second round of charcoal experimentation, testing no name brand briquettes, Tosa binchotan, Knifewear Ogatan, and Knifewear Shirozumi charcoals for heat, ease of use, and burn time.
    NOTE: We used a FLIR infrared thermometer that maxes out at 280C (shown in photos) but supplemented with a digital thermometer that goes up to 1500C.

    good idea to compare charcoals, but horrendous experimental design and execution. More time needed to spent thinking about the test before going straight to filming.

      This is what happens usually when you get right brain dominant people to do left brain dominant tasks, ie artists doing scientific work. 😅
      They were controlling for things that didn’t need to be controlled. The purpose of the test was, in my opinion, to compare the optimum usage of each type of charcoal to each other. It was never to test identical setup conditions of each charcoal. Yet, this is exactly what they did.
