I just found an Optimus 99 in a box I haven't opened in 25 years. It needs some TLC. Thanks for the disasembly instructions; I won't tear it down as far as you did, but they're helpful.

Methylated spirit to preheat. Then no soot all over pre heater.

You put the concave washer in the wrong side of the graphite packing, it goes in first with the concave side facing the graphite and the wick gets pushed as far as it’ll go and then pulled back slightly, roughly 3mm. Thats why your flame wasn’t totally blue.
    My favourite little stove.

Excellent, I own a Russian Clone of Optimus 8R. The only drawback of this stove is that you can do this cleaning after each run :)

Thanks for this video. I have my old 99 I bought brand new back in ‘76. I was literally just a kid. Now I need to do some refurbishment to it. But I know nothing. I have a repair kit on the way. I fix my bicycles all the time. So no problem. What solution are you using to clean the brass? I don’t need to clean much on mine. Just replace some gaskets and check the wick.

I normally just use a strong degreaser and hot water.
The high gloss finish comes from using a polishing mop and paste.

On the spindle you put first the metal o-ring (flat side ahead and concave towards graphite), second the graphite packing and third the stuffing box

Yep, that is a very basic Jet engine, even Airbus and Boeing runs of Paraffin they call it Jet A1, but all it is is paraffin the cheapest fuel you can buy, all Africans houses have at least one of those, you smell a jet engine, I smell a kitchen in Africa.
