Here's a tip, here in the UK when they have harvested a field, as far as I'm aware you are allowed to collect food that hasn't been harvested, it's called 'gleaning' I picked up 30KG yes 30 kilograms of onions out of a field that had been harvested a few weeks back , there were thousands of onions left over which will go to waste! I'm now keeping an eye out for harvested potato fields.
    It's FREE FOOD!

I advise folks to stock up on yarn. Wool yarn is not expensive and is naturally water resistant. Not to mention that it can be reused. I can't tell you how many times I have bought old afghans at a yard sale and unraveled it getting 6 skeins of yarn that I then turned into sweaters hats socks

1 skein of 100% wool yarn isn't expensive but if you need 30 skeins at $5/skein (for 55 yards so it might be A LOT more) for an afghan, well you get the idea. Acrylic yarn is cheap but it's no where near as warm. I had to close my Etsy shop because of only 9 sales in 4 years. I made something that took 21 days at 10 hours a day and no one would pay over $100. That's a dime an hour. I have lots of unsold items for barter and lots of yarn!!

A couple tips about common items found around the house. When you finish up a roll of plastic wrap or aluminum foil, take the cutting edge off the package, carefully roll up and place in an old medication bottle. If you put a couple of those together, it can be used as a saw. Save a few bread bags, can be used to keep feet dry. Used aluminum foil, can be used to build a small sun oven. Medication bottles can be used to store tacks, nails, matches, elastics, sewing kit, seeds etc. Don't throw out broken eye glasses, save the lens, may need it to start a fire There are so many things around the house that can be utilized for a simple bug out bag, it doesn't have to be expensive, top of the line as long as it works for you.

A good tip is to sell any stuff now you won't need in a survival situation, like your TV, PlayStation etc etc if you have anything like that.
    It'll all become worthless soon.
I sold my project car yesterday I've been working on for 6 years to fund preps, it was a hard thing to do as I was really attached to it but the survival of me and my family comes first.
With the small funds you can amass, look at the most important tools you will need and focus on those.
Also, get a job on a farm if you can, farmers will need protection and manpower so you're sure to be very valuable to them in a collapse.

If these were "normal" times, id store it and start my own biz eventually... It's actually become a real burden.. need to figure out where to sell it... and yeah, if I were homeless I'd be finding a farm to help out on.. cuz farmers are smart and cool and full of valuable info..and definitely need help!!

One hack I learned from a TH-cam prepper channel is to collect free phone books ( the ones that are about an inch thick ) from grocery stores, gas stations, convenience stores etc. They usually have them at the front of the store and they are free. The pages are thin and if rubbed back and forth on a table edge or even crumpled they become soft enough to use as toilet paper. They also take up much less space and are sterile at printing.

    • @monkeeblue
      @monkeeblue 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Aboslutely! Last year at the start of all this cOVidMess...I scavenged pepper seeds out of a yellow sweet pepper and started them, put them in the garden and got enough peppers to ferment some for longish term storage. You've got nothing to lose with free seeds and some potting soil. Also if you buy heirloom vegetables of any kind at the grocery store those will grow true to type and it's less expensive sometimes compared to ordering the seeds. I've done several types of squash both heirloom and hybrid that I got the seed from a store purchased squash and had good luck with those that were hybrid varieties for commercial farming too.
My advice to those considering this...look up how to save specific seeds, some need to be soaked to a ferment before saving for optimum germination later.

We lived so far under the poverty line that it looked impossible for almost the entirety of our marriage, and that’s also how I grew up. It’s the best thing for prepping skills, if you’re an industrious person with intent to create the most safe and stable environment for you and your family. Knowledge is free these days, as CP said! I learned about the nutritional value of food, and how to combine the least expensive food to create full nutritional needs with the least $$. We raised our boys without them feeling “poor” (usually!), as they lived a culturally and experientially rich life. My hubby was a student for so many years that learning was just what we did as a family! So much of “prepping” is the acquisition of knowledge.

Wildlife hack when on a hike: Coyotes are becoming more plentiful and the chance of an encounter is steadily increasing. Should you come across a coyote on your hike through the woods or walk on the beach, keep in mind there is likely more than one coyote around you that you do not see. To stay safe on you adventure, always walk with a hiking stick, a belt knife, a can of pepper spray, and other security items (where legal). If you are out after dark walking your dog, keep your dog on a leash and always bring a good Flashlight. Coyotes do not like flashing strobe lights, so purchase a flashlight with an annoying strobe.
Hope you have safe & happy hiking.

If one is humble one can live very well off the fat of the land. One of my tips would be to dip match tips in hot wax so that even if you get wet the matches will light. Collect mylar bags, they are often thrown away cause a product was sold in one. Lots of products these days, even candybars. They can be reused, just trimmed smaller cause was opened before. Example I realized I had a large mylar bag given to me with spent free coffee grounds for gardening laying in my garage. Bulk coffee beans often come in large mylar bags. Wash thoroughly and dry. all you need is to cut off the ragged edges and any zip top and you can seal true dry goods in them with a clothes iron or hair flat iron. Things like dried beans, rice, oatmeal, split peas, lentils, sugar, salt, etc. Also good for saving seeds long term. I have since seen mylar in many places. As a lark I took an Emergen-C single serving mylar bag, cut it open neatly to use its contents, filled it with some garden seed I saved and sealed it closed. I have a snack bag next, croutons came in it, also mylar. The Provident Prepper also on TH-cam is excellent for storing in mylar info. also heavy plastic FOOD bags cut, clean, fill, and seal by folding a say 3-4 inch strip of aluminum foil in half lengthwise and put it tucked over and under the open lip and iron on the foil, not on the plastic and it reseals. Reuse the foil over and over. I have 5 pounds of rice in a heavy, shrimp freezer bag with just the zip close being used. Just remember to date them, and perhaps include cut out cooking instructions.

I have been very poor in the past. luckily my situation has improved a great deal. but I will never forget the lessons I learned. First Knowledge is always going to be important. Look for videos on how to make what you need. then dont just watch them. take what you learned and go make it. it helps you remember what you learned. Knowledge and experience are easier to carry than a library of books in your back pack!
As for stocking up, First most situations will be a temporary condition. like a bad storm or a short pay check etc. Get enough ramen noodles for one meal per day per person (for a weeks worth of dinners) and then get canned mixed veggies. one can per pack of noodles. is it health food? NO! Its survival food! and its supper cheap and self stable! Also get as much parsley as you can. Yes Parsley. I happen to be a certified herbalist and parsley is one of the most under valued herbs out there. why do you think food companies put it in so much stuff. so they can boost the nutrition content for super cheap. Now that you have that out of the way, every time you go shopping (where ever your able) by one more of what you need every time. Need one jar of peanut butter get 2. etc. Its a slow process but it works! Need 7 dinners for the week get 8. It really adds up over time with out breaking the bank! Also get off brand where ever you can.
I also strongly urge people to get mineralized salt when they can. it will help keep your minerals up in a SHTF situation. As your pantry starts to get fuller you can then start to selectively choose to buy better preps. Another thing I have done is figure out a basic menu that we are willing to eat. I go through our favorite meals and then figure out how much we need for that meal. then I times those items by 52 weeks. and that tells you how much you need for that one meal for a year. you pick 6 other meals and do the same. then start stocking up on those items. Be sure to keep an eye out for deals. like my store will have 10 for 10 deals. and I jump on those! I hope these ideas help others.

Pick them up as part of your walking game. You may also find any number of other things. Sometimes people put stuff out for free and sometimes you just find other useful things or pass by a yard sale. I always find money. It may only be a few cents, or sometimes much more. Don't forget garage sales. I recently picked up a bunch of MRE's for $2 each, they normally sell for $12+ each. I also found CAT Tourniquets, brand new still sealed, for $ 0.50 each. And water hydration packs for $2 that fit inside any back pack that has a back pocket (a large pocket that sits along your back). Plus canteens for $ 0.50 each. A back-packing back pack for $ 10. Don't forget, you can haggle at garage sales to get an even lower price if the seller is open to it, and most are.

I find that you can learn a lot from a squirrel. They eat constantly, but every time they find a food source, they "squirrel away" a portion of the food they find. Even if it's a tablespoon of rice for every cup you cook, it adds up. Another way is to buy $1, or 1 item extra each time you shop. Something small that you can put in a special place to start your prepping. One can of food, a small bag of rice, a muffin mix, a small knife, a laundry bag, a flashlight, a couple of batteries, a tea candle . . . it can be done $1 at a time, one item at a time. If you buy 1 extra item for your prepping each time you shop, you will be surprised how quickly you have most of the items you need, and it won't hit your pocket book nearly as hard as if you go all out in one shot.

I make my own firestarters for camping and emgx use and stick the vaselined cotton balls in each section of a paper egg carton, add other flammable material such as pet bedding or sawdust, maybe add a match and pour melted wax from other used up candles/crayons/canning wax/beeswax pellets over it all filling all the sections. Once dry/set I cut up the carton sections with a knife.
Some people add dryer lint, but that adds microplastics to the whole deal which I avoid as a preference.

    Use what you already have.
You can create your own water storage, by saving one gallon plastic containers, instead of throwing them away. Quit thinking you need 500 liter bladders to do the job.
Empty Gatorade type bottles make fantastic canteens.
Make your own rocket stoves from metal cans or find a dilapidated brick building and rescue the bricks, to make your own wood stove for free.
You know you're going to need fuel, so every time you see a cut up tree someone is tossing, then help yourself. Also, go after dead wood in your area and remember to inspect wood for insects; especially termites and carpenter ant type species. Just remember to keep wood stockpiles away from your dwelling, to avoid insect invasion.
Invest in a good bicycle and a way to keep it from getting stolen.
If you have no money for a weapon, upon the announcement of an EOTWAWKI event, you can obviously loan one from a relative or fashion a spear. Have something that you know will work to guarantee that you can stand your ground.
Everybody can afford dried beans. A cola cost about the same as a small bag of beans that could feed you for days. So, if you aren't buying beans, then you must be planning to fail.
Most so called Survival Food has little nutritional value. Their main functions are to fill your gut and give you calories. In the long run, depending on survival food to survive, is a fools game. That stated, invest every chance you can, to buy multi vitamins or grow and harvest your own Moringa trees. You can get those seeds at TreeSeeds . Com. Moringa requires tropical conditions, so this will require a greenhouse to achieve.
Save your seeds: every time you eat fruits and don't eat all your unshelled nuts. During your nature hike, plant them beneath the soil just before the first freeze sets in. When Spring arrives, they should spring forth and begin the process of growing a forest of food.
Recover all the Romance Novels and old magazines, that are often discarded at thrift stores or garage sales. They are worthless for reading, but great for burning and if bug free, can be stored efficiently in your dwelling. Often times, old, abandoned buildings have rooms, crammed with boxes of old sales and tax records, which can be repurposed for heating fuel.
Worn out car tires can be used as large flower pots, or if you have access to a lot of them, they can be stacked to create a hooch. You can pack mud or materials in the cracks to block the wind and rain. Tires have many repurposing possibilities, as does cardboard, so spend time researching their hacks.
You know your shoes and cloths are going to wear out, so securing replacements, is wisdom in action.

You have to clean them up and refill them every so often b/c milk jugs and plastic containers can grow bacteria inside. They're not the best to use, but they work if in a pinch and you take care of them and put fresh water in them from time to time. When you DO refill them, don't dump the water down the sink, use it to water a garden OR do like I do and fill up old used jugs like cat litter containers, wiper fluid containers, etc.. and store them under your sink to flush your toilets. :)

This is a good video for those newly-broke or on the verge thereof, who finally see the handwriting on the wall. A few things IMHO: the Dollar Tree stores have found it necessary to start raising their prices slightly, but they're still a good resource if you have a really tight budget and some imagination. Learn how to construct essentials such as stoves and utensils out of empty food cans, and get creative with materials you come across to get the most use out of them. I would n't count on TH-cam anymore for income, unless your topic is completely neutral (until the 'cancel" crowd finds it), is totally PC, or you're willing to sell your soul.
One thing for newbies and experienced preppers need to know is that the more desperate times are, the more likely you are to get ripped off, assaulted or worse for even your meager supplies. If you consider taking someone new on board, make sure they won't burn you while you're sleeping. And if you find a way to make sure, let me know.

You missed a big one: tag sales. People sell literally anything at tag sales, and some things that may be blocked from sale online like knives. When you find an estate sale, you will definitely find a pile of tools and almost anything else you can think of for pennies on the dollar. Great for finding prepping items that you might not otherwise use in your daily life. And look for items that have an alternative use than what they are intended for. Old storage totes could be great for storing water, for example. Also, if your city offers curbside bulk pick up, your neighbors will be putting all sorts of great stuff out on the curb as trash. It's NOT trash. I found an $80 plastic stock tank on the side of the road, and it's perfect to hold the bathtub water storage bladder since I don't trust my floor to hols a bathtub full of water. People put wood on the curb as well.

I really appreciate the rawness in this video. Anyone, including myself, who has once had to survive the streets, learns to fight in ways that most do not consider otherwise (mentally and physically). When one who has lived as such finally finds themselves on their feet and, perhaps, even gaining the upper hand in life (financially), one takes those skills learnt elsewhere and puts them into life - hides them where needed, yet keeps them and trains on them to use as their hidden 'shock card'. Brilliant piece.

Than harvesting pallets from many large volume stores for nails and lumber, sure not the best but can build a little chicken coop or rabbit hutch from the materials. Great suggestions. Thanks CP. Save fastfood napkins, keep a few used soda cans, water bottles, milk jugs, soup cans, pickle jars. Multitude of uses. 2 liter bottles fill with water. Yard sales, pawn shops.

When I was on disability and needed food, one of the churches gave me 4 huge boxes of food. I did share with neighbors as some of the food is on its last day or two. But is it is a great resource.

I can’t stress thrift stores enough. It’s more than just a bunch of junk. You’d be amazed at what people give away. I found a 200 dollar respirator mask for 10 bucks. A 120 dollar drone for 6 bucks. Backpack for 5 bucks. And then clothes too... you really can’t beat the thrift stores.

Start indoor FOOD garden - Buy seeds prices vary. Buy a tote $10.00. - in the lid cut 2" holes (size holes for yogurt cups or similar sized plastic cups to set in water & top edge is just above lid) - Holes about 3" apart. - punch about 20 good sized holes in cups with large screwdriver for roots. You'll need something to support the plants as they grow - rock wool, clay pellets, in a pinch paper towels. Start your seeds on paper towel & cover with 1 paper towel resting on a waterproof tray or bake sheet - don't let them dry out - add water or mist throughout the day. When they're about 1 1/2 to 2" " long, carefully place in center of cup ON 1/4" growing medium in cup & add additional grow medium around seedlings. (IF USING ROCK WOOL - slice the rock wool cube length wise 1/2 way through to the center & place seedling in it then place in cup), put cup in hole in lid. fill tote with enough water to reach 1/4 way up plant cup. turn on aquarium pump & heater to warm & circulate water. follow miracle grow fertilizer directions (sizes & prices vary) - buy enough for 3 years.(or learn to make compost tea). use support for tall plants. use a grow light $6.-$15 for 12 hours on /12 off, if not producing well then try 16 hours on & 8 off. This may cost up to $30-$50 but will feed you for years.

I am just really getting my indoor garden going. In a sunroom addition I have taken 5 windows and put 2 shelves each in them (they are wide silled, so it gives me 3 shelves each window). We can still open them the way the shelves are installed. Then I found on Amazon self watering planters that fit the shelves - 3 per shelf for a total of 9 per window. We are eating on the regular herbs and salads now from those planters and have installed an 8’ planked bench (lying on top of bulk food buckets) that I have tomatoes, onion, peppers, radish, strawberry plants, and even lemon and pineapple trees going. I use grow lights to help. There is a wood burning stove plus a split air unit in the sunroom so I should be able to keep the temperatures moderated regardless the weather conditions. I have 5 more windows that are looking empty right now. 😉😂

You can regrow lettus bases, celery, onion, leeks etc even on window sill or balconies start by bases just touching water using toothpicks then transfer to small pots of soil when roots appear. I grew up snagging bunnies, pigeons, brother caught fish. Bottle hunted and got cash for box foods. We had powder milk and oatmeal very simple life. Ditch apple tree. Glean from harvested fields and collect what the big farm trucks lost at every turn.

you can reuse mylar bags as many food products come in them. The outside pictures just ignore. cut to clean edge, clean and close with iron. Label what is in them good for true dry goods. Good youtube videos to learn how and what food is safe to do that way.

You don't really need a lot of space to grow food. Look into tower gardens, structured like a pyramid, build out of old pallet wood. You can get up to around 75 plants into 1m2 and even grow it indoors. Learn how to grow food from things you already buy to eat like spring onions or spinach for example. One of my spinach plants gave me new leaves every week for almost 2 years already. You can do a lot with just some basic knowledge.

I would not recommend pallet wood for anything in close contact with food or body (yes, i know palletwood furniture is "in"). Some (most?) of pallets are heavily treated with chemicals to prevent rot an pests.

Using coupons helps... dumpster diving can really help. I have done both... I didn't dive for preps but it is possible. (Before you get all freaked out about dumpster diving... THAT is how I got my bosch universal mixer worth over $500! Many nights I came up empty... but that night I got a bosch and a vacuum... both needed and it was worth more than my monthly income. (I did this a couple years before the 19 stuff.) After that, I quit because I don't need stuff... I had hit my dream list. Some dumpster dive for food.... successfully. Is it legal? Depends on where you are... I risked getting a fine... but never had any encounter that would cause that to happen. Never break into a locked dumpster... never go into a compactor... and yes... that is for the people you have to tell not to eat the silicone packs in a box.

Our local forestry does a gear swap 2X year including winter gear. Basically you bring one piece of useable gear you don't want any longer and so does everyone else and you get to go shopping through camping, hiking, snowshoeing, etc. supplies. People grow out of things. People buy new gear. I have bought something after reading reviews only to find it's not for "me". Everything goes into the big building at the front entrance and everyone gets to pick gear they will actually use themselves. It's a good way to find things you may be missing and get rid of things that you do not like or may be cheap to you.
