  • This video shows popular prepper and survival gear that you should avoid. Some of it is just a little outdated, while others are so bad that they could get you killed if you depended on them in a survival situation.

I'll add my 'amen' to the cheap knives section. When my boys were getting old enough to have a knife, I gave them each a chance to pick out what they thought would be a good one. As predicted, they picked out hollow-handle, no tang knives made of cheap material that wouldn't hold an edge, etc. They were bought b/c there was a dragon carved into the plastic handle, cheap spine saw, stuff like that. When the knives failed, chipped, hilt became a see-saw, cheap plastic broke, I bought them each a Ka-Bar...which, they are still using today. Actually, I'm still using my Ka-Bar that my Uncle Sam got for me in the late '70s.

K-bars are good & all, but not very practical to carry around in a city. I carry 2 pocket knives, simply because I want to, & I make 1 of them my “work” knife & the other my “personal” knife.
My work knife is a 4” D2 steel folder. That D2 steel takes longer to sharpen, but the 1.5% carbon makes it hold a very sharp edge for a very long time. My personal knife is a 3.25” switchblade, the blade made of 8Cr13MoV steel. It’s got almost half the carbon of the D2, but it still holds a good edge.

@@bostontracy5151I'm a big fan of carrying two knives on me for edc, maybe more if I'm camping. A folder for light duty, and a small fixed blade for harder use.

A good quality knife is a one of those "buy once cry once" situations. Never sacrifice aesthetics for quality, and a knife, arguably the most basic tool of any survival kit, is a tool that should never be bought on the cheap.

I had a "Rambo" knife in the 80s. Not only did I have the same issues you did, but the metal was made out of pot metal and would not take an edge.

There are two hollow handle knives I have seen that don't suffer from the inherent weakness of such knives.
One was fashioned from a single piece of metal where the handle was drilled out of a solid piece of metal that was the same piece of metal that the blade itself was made from. So it was a single piece of metal except for the cap on the handle.
The other knife had an oversized tang that was folded over to form a tube. Again the whole knife including the handle was a single piece of steel. A disadvantage of this knife was that the handle was off center.

That good compass you showed looks like my Silva that I got from the Boy Scouts. Except mine is a little melted on one corner. (grin) Silva, Brunton, and Suunto all make good compasses. A liquid filled one is definitely the way to go. They settle quickly and they survive bumps that would knock a non-liquid filled compass needle off its pivot.

With regards to the hexy stoves, this is yet again a case of
"They took the good stuff out".
Just like Savlon antiseptic cream, jeyes fluid and modern "Creosote"
The original hexy blocks had a simple ratio ... 1 Block = 1 pint of water boiled or 1 Block = 1 regular can of soup/ beef stew/ cooked chicken in sauce etc.
Buuttttt..... They changed the chemical formula of the blocks to make them "Eco- Friendly" ???
So now, the blocks are random in their performance.
IF you still use a hexy stove... try and get military surplus blocks of fuel, or keep the ones found in eastern european MRE's

The credit card while not the best makes for a small stuff cutter. Think fishing line, thin materials (tape, tarp, maybe small game/fish) but isnt particular ergonomic. The rest of the cutouts are for small nuts to be loosened/tightened, map tool(includes stamped ruler). Again, its major downside is the lack of ergonomics. The magnesium firestarter i agree. Just get a stout ferro rod and learn how to create fire under different circumstances. I would suggest every survival kit includes a pencil sharpener. Pencil sharpers create shavings that light fast from twigs you randomly find.

I still have my credit card multitool and yeah I can confirm that the most common use is to open beer or soda bottles. Sometimes to slice up open a package, measure something or tight a loose screw. Usually I have a better multitool at hand, but it never hurts to have a backup.
Never underestimate the upsides of having a cheap knockoff swiss army multitool. If you lose it or it breaks you wont miss it. This will be the first kind of multitiool I will give my daughter when she gets old enough. And if she shows me that she is interested in this kind of stuff and takes cares of her gear I will gift her better tools down the road.

I also like SAK's- and the suunto compass is a a good one !
The esbit stove you show is still in use in the German Army . I used it there 40 years ago and still have a couple. They do what they are supposed to do.
They were never meant for cooking a large meal or boiling more than water for a big cup of coffee/tea or heating up a small can of soup. That they do.
They are good, small, simple and cheap. They work in the cold ,independed of altitudes, have no fuel leaking, no need for collecting dry burning materials.
I keep one in them in the car and one in our get home bags to have a couple times the possibility to warm up some food or to get a hot drink.
Once ignited the cubes work as a backup fire starter too.
They also make small alkohol burners which you can use instead of esbit.
Once you run out of esbit you can toss the stove if you feel its a burden - or you can still use it. Place it in a fire as a stand for your pot / canteen.
Short - i like them and believe they are more useful than many think.

For a good inexpensive knife I recommend Gerber - available everywhere. Another decent brand is Spydor. If you want to step up look at Benchmade. I have owned and used all three without regret. My EDC is a Benchmade Griptilian folder.

The sugar based fuel tabs are non toxic but Esbit fuel has hexamine and will produce small quantities of toxic gases so you need to have ventilation. Alcohol produces only water vapor and CO2, better in a confined space like a tent.

About hollow handle knives, schrade makes one with blade and handle drop forged from one piece of steel, so it should be quite durable. I never owned it thoug, so I can not attest to its quality - just putting it out there for anyone who might still be interested in the concept and searching for more viable options.

Regarding hexamine fuel tablets, I think the Coghlans round tablets are a better option than the Esbit ones. They are half the size of the small Esbit ones (7 g vs. 14 g) so they give better granularity allowing you to use only as much as you need. They aren’t separately packaged so they take up less space allowing you to carry more.

My buddy put the round gun cleaning patches cotton I guess in an aspirin bottle and sprayed them down with WD40 these things light with one strict of a rod and burn about 60 seconds. Put the lid on tight so WD40 doesn’t evaporate and they stay good about a year.

I used to cook over real hurricane lanterns using homemade tomato cages. My hollow handle knives are made from one solid piece of steel like Chris Reeves were but beefed up and carried by a lot of elite forces and professionals. I've never had one returned.

Unfortunately for the magnesium bars the market is flooded with cheap and such a low quality no matter the size the pile of shavings, they may not even ignite.
If inclined to get one try and find a actual U.S. military issue.
If you can find them, they should have NSN and pertinent information stamped in to it and should be kind of a flat grey and shave with moderate effort. This is due to the magnesium content which makes it softer. Getting a good quality mag bar is no different than a good quality Ferro rod. You get what you pay.
I still have mine from the time it was issued.

Good evening. Nothing beats an outdoor fire for cooking. As for lighting, that same fire at close range will do it. Anyways, you want to get up naturally, so go to bed. As for knives, I like Gerber multi-tool knives. Fire starter, I invested in coconut husk. Great vid, JR. Folks, stay vigilant and informed. Thank you, J R.

I highly recommend a Kelly Kettle as a camping stove. Operating on the same principle as the rocket stove, it boils water at the same time as heating food. You start your fire with small kindling in the tray provided, then add larger sticks from the top. It can come with several useful accessories, depending on your anticipated needs. It weighs almost nothing to carry in a backpack...

      @highloughsdrifter1629 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Kelly Kettles are brilliant. I don't find the top mounted pan holder works though, the pan seems to block the draught. What I do is get the fire going with the kettle on, get my cup of tea, then switch to the hobo stove converter for cooking.

    • @Joe_Goofball

@@highloughsdrifter1629 I ordinarily use it to heat meals in a can--Dinty Moore Beef Stew or Chicken and Dumplings, Wolf Chile con carne etc. I open the lid 80% of the way, bending the rest of the lid into a crude "handle" for removal of the food once it's hot...
