    1. You should’ve tested out a Power A controller because there are 2 easily programmable buttons on the back and they are really comfortable (at least for me)

@@bobbyzeitgeist1842 I use a power-a wireless controller, though I don't play smash. It's pretty good imo; I play Super Metroid with it, PC games like Dark Souls, Hollow Knight, Ori 2, etc. So it's fine with precise movement, pairing up via bluetooth (unlike Gamecube I assume unless they changed that), feels comfortable, has programmable buttons, good layout, etc.
The thing I noticed about it when I got it was that it did feel a little light (especially without batteries), and I've never had a Pro or XBox or Playstation controller so dunno how different that is. I also have gamecube controllers and those feel lighter (when you have batteries inside the powera). I'd imagine if you used a wired power-a controller it would be too light, unless they build it differently to account for that.
Anyway, I've had it for quite a while and it's very good for me. The joysticks don't have notches if you're into that. They also have different art choices for colors or even prints from popular games, and it's just straight up cheaper than the Pro. Would highly recommend, though again, I don't play smash.

you should make another video on mastering the fighting game controller, that would be cool

  • @GumshoeClassic

I'm just gonna drop this here since Arcade Sticks are something I always liked to talk about, so in case anyone is wondering "why do people still use these", here's a little ted-talk:
One reason is of course nostalgia.
But the big one is that most combo systems in fighting game heavily rely on cancels, which require you to perform inputs in quick succession. Smash doesn't really use cancels outside of Ryu, Ken, and Terry. You don't cancel a move into another, you *link* them.
To do these quick button presses it's often simply way more comfortable to have your hand resting on the controller, enabling you to use more than just 2 or 3 fingers while you can dedicate your other hand entirely to stick movement, which also has to be precise and quick and makes use of unusual motions (like the legendary pretzel input).
Seriously, try this on a normal controller: Use your stick to draw a half circle from right to down to left, then immediately push right again and press A and B in quick succession. How fast? Ideally you want to press B one or two frames (aka 1 or 2 60ths of a second) after A.
This is the input for a Kara Potemkin Buster. And hell on a controller.
These control schemes have their roots way back in the past. Old arcade cabinet layouts influenced the way fighting games are played and in turn nowadays fighting games pass that influence on to the peripherals we use. Smash ain't different.
It's not all black and white of course, games or even specific characters/techniques can be more comfortable on a pad than on a stick and player preference is a thing. Some pro players even switch back and forth during a tournament. DBFZ explicitly avoided inputs not well-suited for a typical controller.
    So the tldr is:
Execution in fighting games was heavily influenced by old arcades. The techniques and conventions from this era are still around and can be uncomfortable to make use of on a pad. Since these games often can't really make use of an additional stick or dpad many players opt for a stick to make said inputs easier.
And now I slink back into my cave again.

8bitdo pro 2 controller would be literally the perfect controller if the dpad had a slightly better texture and shape, ive always liked the feel of the ds dpad and ive thought itd be amazing if someone could replicate the feel of it on a regular controller. Also the dpad sometimes makes a slight noise when pressed, although im pretty sure this is a result of the way they have designed it to not have the same issues as things like the switch pro controllers dpad.
Edit: btw, i bought the controller basically entirely for 2d platformers and tetris, which it is amazing for.

You have to remap your buttons to accommodate whichever controller you're using! Default uses two of the faces buttons to jump. That really takes away from most the controllers used like the Zero 2 and the fight stick. For the fight stick I would suggest mapping your main actions to the homerow the your fingers rest on so each finger has a dedicated action.

Regarding the official Pro Controller, I changed my bindings to simply have the "Y" button as a second "A" button (thus leaving "X" as my only option for jumping) and it just feels so, so much more natural to reach with my clumsy fingers.
Also, as far as the regular Joy-Cons go, it's not all that much help, but the wrist strap bar (or whatever it's actually called) does help slightly, if only for adding some minor bulk for gripping comfort.
