- Time to kick back and watch another 90s talk show gem that features alternative fashion. Today we have a fine assortment of goths, with the bonus feature of an older woman in the tattoo scene and a man with a 9 inch mohawk. The Ricki Lake show was popular in certain areas but for the most part wasn't as big as say, a Phil Donahue which would have come from the same area of daytime TV. These outfits are super iconic and VERY reminiscent of the 1996 industrial goth scene.
Hi! I'm The Stitchess! I'm an interdisciplinary artist and seamstress. I started sewing when I was 8 and loved it so much I made it the focus of my study in college. After a lifetime of battling severe mental health issues - I found healing in the radical softness and Japanese kawaii communities. As much as I love fashion and clothing, I also think it's important to consider how and where clothing is made. I went fast fashion free at the start of 2019 to voice my concerns over the rapid consumerism gripping the garment industry. By no means am I perfect, but I think it's important to show that change is a process. I believe it is always important to strive to be better, even if perfection is unattainable. Thank you so much for letting me share my art and process with you. I hope we can all grow together.

Apparently being a well oiled cog in the hyper capitalistic machine of America is more important than having a healthy relationship with your kids. That’s where their worth and importance comes from. Not just by existing and being a moral person. That’s what it comes down to.

She was like "who is he to say u can't get one." Then yrs later he was like you know what get one. Then my mom was dissappointed that i would tattoo my body. My mother also let my older sister dye her hair a lot cause it was brown but because i had gorgeous bright blonde hair and that "people pay hundreds of dollars to get hair like mine" i wasn't allowed to dye my hair. Did it anyways but like damn haha. But i love dying my hair. And i love my tattoos and plan on more. And my husband is happy with how I look. My mom also used to say that dying my hair would give people the wrong impression. That I'm a wild child who parties and drinks and does drugs and is irresponsible. But im a shy person who doesnt do any of those things. She would get embarrassed and worried what people at church would think if i had colored hair. Its just funny.

Critisizing adults for dying their hair unnatural colors is stupid because most kids aren't allowed to do it, so they can only do it in adulthood.
Ikr. I'm not allowed to do anything with my hair now as a teen (since I don't even have my own money or anything) so yeah I'm only gonna be able to do that when I become an adult and get a job.
Plus, what about the double standard, the adults with brown hair dye theirs blond, that's not their natural color, they are not trying to cover gray hairs, they want a different look, but when it's blond it's okay, when it's green it's not
I shaved my hair during the Skrillex fad and the worst thing that happened was my mom being a bitch about me being a human being capable of making decisions. Kids should have more freedom in terms of their appearance so they learn to take care of themselves.
One more year left for me until I can have that blue hair I wanted since I was 12. Mom doesn't let me right now and I wish she would.
When I was still in school I told my mom I wanted to color my hair bright red with some temporary dye. She didn't just love the idea, she helped me do it! Lol. It actually ended up looking pretty cool! Temporary dyes like Manic Panic usually only last a couple weeks, so it's not hard to go back to "normal" if you know when you need to look that way!

"50% of her body is covered in tattoos."
One strip down one leg and a smattering of tiny tats does not constitute for half the body, sweaty.
I know! I was jazzed to see a mom in the 90s with 2 leg sleeves and a full back piece. Still cool, though.
lmao you said "sweaty" instead of "sweetie" and somehow that works better
@@milkshake3923 😂
To be fair, for the time she would have been considered heavily tattooed, even if she was a man. It's wasn't like now, where you see sleeves on a pastor. ;) Women were still only getting small or medium sized pieces until around the mid 90's, because you were considered loose , trashy or wild. These kids were the front runners for the loosening of the social norms and the freedom to be able to have peacock colours in our hair and not have it held against you at your job.

(I like to believe parents can’t believe the freedom their kids have in society, while the parents growing up was restricted)
We gotta understand that some parents could care less about “ individuality,” as well. Parents,(I mean the show) understandably have a warped reaction on what’s right, so they negatively strain their kids as the result. They believe only in control.(I dunno if I said this right lol, use your own opinion on what you think)

Does the mother of the caped queen realize her child has a tat of 'Mom' in a heart?
i know, it's so heart breaking. She probably covered it up after this.
It looks like it's marker ink but nonetheless beautiful
That's just sad. The way she seems so happy and energetic as well.
Bleh Bleh Sadly i dont think she realizes anything at all.. She is so whacked about how she is dressing and focused on trivial bullshit that she probably don't really even know who her child REALLY is.. 😥
So the dude thats grades are down, he doesn’t need to change his appearance, he needs help in school. Maybe he needs some homework help from his dad. Or an after school tutor. He doesn’t need to be berated on television and told that the reason he’s doing bad is that he’s dressing a certain way. Because if he did change to dressing “normal” he would still be having trouble in school. I hate that whenever a kid is having trouble in school they blame trivial things instead of trying to get their kids actual help. It hurts every time I see parents doing that.
It's like when I was told in school that I had to cut my hair and have a "normal haircut", my hair was just shorter on the right side than the left side, that was it, and I was a straight A student, it's as if, and bear with me, your look does not affect your learning curve
Exactly! A student getting consistent Ds and Fs in all subjects means that he needs support, not ridicule. He likely felt unmotivated in school, especially if he was being bullied, and struggled to put in the effort to excel.
Learning disorders also tend to go undiagnosed and written off as laziness or bad behavior; I was written off as lazy until a teacher suggested I might be dyslexic, then suddenly everything made sense! I had a student similarly written off as just not trying, until I happened to notice he couldn't match up the colors from an example with the correct crayon- he was actually a very bright student but he was just struggling because he was colorblind!
Sometimes the school itself could suck, that is a thing that happens sometimes.
If your child is ashamed enough to hide his report card from you, it means he knows he will get no assistance from you and only receive blame for not getting different grades. That’s a judgment on the parent not the child. Listen to your child. Don’t judge them on external appearance.
Some parents remind me of that "No, it is the children who are wrong Simpsons meme.
"Hrm. My child has poor grades or depression! Is this related to an issue they might need my love and support for? No, it is the fashion/hobby/music that is to blame!!"
Taking away eyeliner and clothing/video games/CDs/whatever is an appetizing quick fix compared to something that might require time and work.
“Doesn’t that hurt?” Like how you pluck your eyebrows and wax your whole body for what you yourself think is beautiful?
Saying to that mother she shouldn't wear a crop top because she had children and it shows on her body reinforces the tought that women are only to be desired when they are yound and free, and only a mom and no longer an woman once they have children. It's sad how this hasn't changed much since the 90s.
Also the idea that women can only wear crop tops for the purpose of being desired by men
Its like.. who says I want to be desired at all? If anything I want the girls to want me 😳
bacon thing Oh I’m sure if they don’t accept some drawings on your body and some color on your dead skin cells they absolutely wont accept you for being interested in other women. This type of stuff is always just shying away from condemning people for other things if you know what I mean. It’s bigotry lite. Literally all that was said to the alternative people on this show has been said to people before it’s just this time it’s targeting people’s appearance choices. 🤷🏻♀️
Not to mention it’s just classic fatphobia/misogyny.
Lauren
It’s not just the fat phobia tho, it’s like stretch marks and loose skin are a bad thing. But, they aren’t. They’re natural.

“it’s almost like alternative fashions can help a person regain their sense of bodily autonomy and a relationship with their body.” This hit me so hard. Having piercings and dyeing my hair has made me feel so much freer and more creative than before and even helped me regain confidence in my outward appearance when I can look at myself in a different way
Edit: both the girls are absolutely gorgeous! I love both their looks!
For years my mother wouldn't let me cut my hair short even though I begged. Finally she gave in and told me she didn't care if I cried afterwards. My hair was down to my armpits and I cut it down to a pixie. I felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders and became so confident. I'm growing it back out again but I don't regret doing that at all.
Dark Fantasy/Strega goth here. When I finally decided to start dressing the way I do I thought for sure I was going to think I looked ridiculous. Turns out, up this sort of thing suited me to an unearthly level, and has given me so much confidence as well as opened my eyes as to what really matters in a lot of dilemmas I'd been struggling with for way too long. I've also learned that the vast majority of people don't assume you will act like an evil witch just because you dress like one; they'll just ask where you buy your clothes.💚
Before I used to wear anything without thought, but once I started having my own style I felt way better!( I wear skirts, trench coats, whatever looks good) :>
As someone who i trans, that resonated in my BONES. I may not be able to change everything about my physical body that makes me uncomfortable, but I can at least do small things that make me feel good, like dye my hair purple or wear earrings that I have made. Next step when the plague is over is snakebites!! I just want to be able to look in the mirror and love the person that I see
As a nonbinary individual who has struggled with every form of body issues, this absolutely resonates with me.
Wearing alternative fashion has let me claim myself-let me _be_ myself. Crop tops have let me both fall in love with my imperfect stomach and helped balance out my long torso. Showing a little more skin in general helps me feel more confident than hiding behind baggy, modest clothing. Plus, with the way my gender shifts, I can actually dress in ways that better match my gender without it being obvious. I absolutely _love_ myself and my body now.

Maybe Alan Jr is failing school because his home life is absolute trash because of how his father treats him... ever think of that Alan Sr?
I hate when parents pass THEIR name onto their child. Expecting them to be your follow up, that dad set me off as soon as I heard the sons name and the dads just a controlling prick.
@@jodiesmith1991 the practice of passing on names has been done for centuries. It's why surnames like Jameson, Jackson, Samson etc exist. They literally mean Son of James etc.
In earlier times it was an easy way to follow family lineage.
Moving forward to the 1900's common names were handed down through family lines to keep the name a tradition in the family. Names like Mary, Margaret, David etc were often switched between middle and first names for alternate generations.
And then you have the most degrading, manipulative and downright self obsessed naming convention that is for some reason quite predominant in America; Senior and Junior.
How self important must you feel to name your child directly after you. What have you done that is so great and notable that you feel the need to cement your greatness by robbing your child of their own individuality.

All the body-shaming the mother gets makes me angry. I think the people who say they support the looks except for her only accept it bc it's a phase in their minds
Yea, they get so mad about it bc her presence is a direct 'attack' on their opinion that's it's "just a phase". If she's still dressing like that at 'her age' then they suddenly have to consider maybe it's not a phase, some people just want to dress like that 🙄
The whole " you're too old to wear that" mentality of people is ridiculous. Her children obviously know that they dont wanna wear short shorts, so it's not taht shes setting a bad example. And almost everyone has cellulite and stretch Marks so why is that an issue for them. If you dont wanna see her tummy , look at her face. ( now if it's a 8 year old wearing that, ok get concerned because it can get her /him in danger, but a grown woman with a grown mind, can wear what she wants)
It's one of those things you "aren't suposed to talk about" but I have had people I know tell me about the "death of self" they have experienced while parenting.
Like, obviously you can't live the way you did before when there is a kid to raise but they feel like they stopped being themselves and became only "Mommy" or "Daddy". A 24/7 pressure to "be a good parent", whether the child is present or not, and not have anything for themselves.
This woman? Has something for herself. She is expressing herself and keeping a sense of identity. As long as she is doing right by her kids, she is just fine and shouldn't be shamed for not cramming herself into a "Good Mommy" mold.
For me it's just that she's a mother. Idk, if my mom or dad were dressing provocatively when I was a little kid and kept doing it that would be a little inappropriate I think. I don't care if you're 63 and want to dress like that, but if you're a parent I think you need to set good examples, at least for younger kids because you know little kids are going to want to dress that way, too.
I hope I dress alternatively when I'm 63!

I've dyed my hair every color of the rainbow and wear alternative fashion. I have a 3.9 GPA studying to be a teacher. Only thing holding us back are bigots. The only reason why I stop dying my hair was because I got tired of bleaching my hair.
I was told that children would not take me seriously, especially girls, because I am a tomboy. Guess what, I made a lot of friends among kids, especially girls. They like me because I was listening to them and helped to resolve their conflicts as well as teached them important lessons about their bodies and relationships with boys. I was respected among children, they trusted me. Yeah, they weren't afraid of me, this is what I assume that person meant by 'respect'. So, go for it!

I remember watching clips of this when I was 13 and in my baby-bat phase.
My mom was convinced that my bad grades came from my desire to wear black.
She even took them all and hid them at my aunt's house in a laundry basket.
Truth was, she was a narcissist, a child abuser, and wanted nothing to do with me. I never got help with homework when I asked. And most of the time I couldn't even count on food being in the house.
And no one ever asked me why I dressed goth. One sentence: "It helped me feel powerful in a life I had no power in."
I'm so sorry u had to go through that! I hope you're doing okay
I'm so sorry!!
Wow we must all love our mothers...not this one though well I’m just glad you were able to overcome that and feel above your mother 😼
Yes... My mom controlled every aspect of my life and took advantage of me financially for years. She’d tell people it was to build my credit. Granted she did take care of me but that came hand-in-hand with the beatings and control when I was younger because when she had a bad day; I had a bad day. I stood up to her at 23. I went out one time when I was 16 with a friend and she screamed at me for 2 hours. When my grandma asked her why she was so angry, she said “she thinks she’s going to grow wings, I’ll cut them.” Today she waits till family parties to belittle me. All of my family members had a hand in my abuse. I was the little pig that everyone in the family loved kicking to the ground including their friends. Fun! I’m glad you got your power through that form of self-expression. Oh, and I hope today you are all right and you’ve healed.
@@samieD22 so sorry they treated you like a scapegoated daughter. hope you are already or can go No Contact with all of them - believe me, it's wonderful ;) you don't owe these narcissists anything. there is a lot of content on youtube and books on narcissistic mothers and parents nowadays. it's really helpful
I love the last mom. She is wearing the most conservative outfit of any of them, yet she is the most understanding parent onstage. That's what a mom should be. I would wager that she has had the least trouble maintaining a healthy relationship with her son as he transitioned from childhood and adolescence into living as an independent adult.
She has the most Conservative outfit? Wtf? Are you sure you know what Conservative means?
I was referring to the mom in the long skirt and, if I recall correctly, sweater top who looked like she would fit right into a Sunday school class. I'd have to rewatch the video to remember exactly what her son looked like, but she was the most loving and accepting parent (at least on camera/stage) out of the lot.

I am 47, and I shaved my head and dyed it mermaid colors for the first time at 42. I finally had the confidence to wear what I want. I had so many little girls come up to me and say my hair was beautiful. I hope I showed those little girls they could look however they choose and to be proud of their style. It is part of who they are. If it makes them happy, it is a good thing.

"he just sounds like he has a tiktok" we did it yall, we found the original eboy
Yeah eboys are definitely a weird blend of the original goth/emo/scene kids I used to hang out with in 2002. Of course back then we listened to hardcore bands with real instruments and went to concerts instead of posting weird clips. Back then fashion was directly correlated to the music you listened to for some reason. Although it still is to some extent.

If you want some deeper cultural context for her saying she “has to rebel” being from a conservative state watch the movie SLC Punk. Salt Lake City in the 80s and 90s was a stifling place to live for those who didn’t fit into it and it was excruciating to live here. Alternative people faced real dangers like domestic violence and harassment for wearing what they liked. Furthermore Utah culture is not kind to those who are not or decide to leave the dominant religion of LDS, and it was even worse back then. Alternative culture was heavily stigmatized (like seriously we got the shit kicked out of us like real beatings, violence and hate crimes) until this past decade.
1. Almost everyone here seems very young, and they definitely don't know what it was like to be alternative in the 90s.

“Your daughters 7 years old and wants a belly piercing” when I was 7 I picked out my own tattoo 10 years later I got it I’ve had it for 4 years and I’m still loving it, just because you want something when you’re younger doesn’t mean you’ll regret it in the future!
Exactly! By 10 I knew I wanted a tattoo, had an idea of what I wanted, and knew where I wanted it. At 19, a family friend (who was like a brother to me) designed and inked it. Nearly 5 years later and I still get giddy looking at it.

yeah uh, i think 7yo is still too young although i’m glad you ended up doing the tattoo! i’m glad kids aren’t allowed tattoos or else we would see a lot of those damn moustaches from 2012 😭
And if you really want something it doesn't hurt to wait.
When I was like 8 or 9 I told my grandmother I wanted a tattoo because my aunt had some and I thought it was so neat, she proceeded to give me a lecture on why “I don’t” want to get a tattoo referencing the pain, the regret, and you know the normal reasons people give against tattoos, last year I decided I still wanted a tattoo so I got one and I love it so much! I have always had body image issues and my tattoo and piercings make me feel so much better about my body and appearance, others can only see the piercings and the tattoo but only the person who has them knows the true meaning and how happy it makes them.

Our youth is a time to find ourselves through expression. It could be a phase, or it could be their true face. Children are not dolls, they are people with their own likes and opinions.
