Hey! I left a comment on my original reaction vid but just in case I’ll say it here too:
I will not be sharing anything in regards to an update on Lexa. From what I was able to find on old EGL posts, she DID return to lolita fashion and I wouldn’t be surprised if she still wore it in 2020. HOWEVER, she has asked for privacy and I would like to respect that. It would seem that she doesn’t appreciate how they edited what she had to say and does not want to be associated with the show and I don’t blame her for that.
Hope everyone understands. Have a nice day!

Not surprised. Things like Goth and Lolita fashion are more about a specific personal style preference. It's less about a style that fits your body etc and more about being into a specific type of lifestyle and the fashion that goes with it.

I'm glad she went private and spent all that money on lolita dresses. I respect her privacy hopefully the show does too.

I think tlc really pushed for "mean girl" hosts. It was a popular trope back then. They wanted dRaMa and there were really only two archetypes for women, girl nextdoor and mean girl, and just one for gay men. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if they insisted she and Kelly be as catty as possible. The 2000's was the bully renaissance and they should apologize to Lexa with Angelic Pretty.
Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

The UK version had Trinny and Susannah as hosts - two posh women who took the piss out of each other and their clients. They weren't quite as mean as their American hosts, but meanness is such a mid-2000s trend in makeover shows, it dates them more than the clothes and makeup

eh, I don’t really think she has a problem with Japan though I feel like she was just using stereotypes to A) say the type of things a “normal” dresser would say or think about dressing that way
      and(or)
      B) shield herself from the problem with in by putting stereotypes and how she felt about herself on others.
So not rly a problem with japan, she just used that as a way to insult the Lolita.

Stacy's attitude got more aggressive as What Not to Wear went on. She was genuinely helpful and supportive at first within the confines of having to send contestants to specific stores in NYC. Like, contestants originally could say things like "I don't like that color" when the rules were explained, and then Stacy would explain why they picked the color, what other colors they thought would work for the contestant, and how the rules were inspiration, not requirements. Season 1 feels like an entirely different show. It was a slow transformation to the more cruel elements of reality TV when the show had to stick to the formula that made them successful. She's grown a lot since then and expanded her understanding of fashion, but I really think it was the machine of reality TV that brought out her bad side.

    • @HickaruFire
      @HickaruFire 4 ปีที่แล้ว +107

I heard(or read) somewhere that they were actually doing all that behind the scenes in later seassons. They had to do the sassy-mean parts that were kind of scripted for the show. You can tell those aren't real interactions since the contestants rarely comment or react on anything they say.

Yeah I was surprised when I watched the Lolita video. I watched a lot of what not to wear as a kid and I never remembered them being so mean or unhelpful. It made me sure that the producers were going for a specific angle with that episode (and it sounds like later seasons) that just made it so much more 'reality TV drama' and not 'fluffy, inoffensive content' that TLC was originally known for. Like it did always seem to be quite narrow in it's recommendations but yeah more in line with what Stacy said in the podcast - that easy, quick and inoffensive wardrobe.

LynnMelo yeah! I think the show was originally meant for people who had no idea how to look for work/insecure with their body and so wore clothes that swamped them. For them, basic shapes and such would be super helpful to learn about. There were some people who really seemed to feel better about themselves. But American reality tv is all about drama and tension 😒

I think the lesson to learn from this as a whole is that, when people shit on other people's artistry in order to tone them down, it's because they're insecure themselves. She couldn't even comprehend that somebody could be happy or beautiful being different because *she* was so insecure with herself that it was just unfathomable. That's something I've faced in my own life a lot as I've dealt with people who would shit on me for being different, and then much later on come to me and say, "no, I really did love what you did, but I couldn't imagine ever doing it," and it's like, ya, obviously, that's why I didn't listen to you. People who just insult other people for no reason, especially when they're happy with themselves and showing off their creativity, are really just insecure with themselves and seeing someone who can express themselves beautifully in a unique way reminds them of that, reminds them of the fact that *they* couldn't do it, and it scares and intimidates them. I learned at an early age to not take it personally when people didn't understand because it wasn't my job to educate them, it wasn't my job to make them understand, my job was to be *me* and I was damn good at it.

There's something real about age. The concept of "my time will be up someday" might be what sets someone off to dress how they want.
It's exciting to wonder who will I be at 30, 50, or 70 (I'm 21 currently). Will I keep up on cute style or how will it change? A lot of us might even wear colors we never wanted to wear before. It's fun to think about age and fashion.

I don’t see any thing that I associate w/a trend. I don’t see drastic changes (maybe there are) but it’s just an evolution . I also have clothes from over 15+ years ago I still wear. She admits she was wrong, she identified what was wrong and how she got there, identified how and why she needed to make changes and proceeded to make those changes. Self reflection is extremely important for personal growth and so many lack this. I admire her growth and I wish more people could go through this kind of transformation. I started having white hair at 13 or 14, it became noticeable at 15. At this time, apart from my mother I didn't have a white hair role model. I started to watch tlc because I had become fluent in english(2nd langage). I noticed quickly that there were a lot of toxicity on there (like the freak show type exploitation of this little people family and those poor teenage conjoined twins), the only show I could stomach was what not to wear. I've seen more the earlier seasons, they were a bit more wholesome and personalised to the client than the episode you reviewed. When I saw your review, I couldn't believe how such garbage could have made me feel good. I think my main reason for liking the show was that there was this cool lady that was unapologetic about her white hair and a cool dude that was openly gay, two things that spoke to me a lot. I also liked that they convinced people that were not cookie cutter that they could shop for beautiful clothes and they had the right to enjoy their appearance. This is something I'm just starting to experience at 30 years old because I was bullied my entire youth for being fat and the offer in plus size clothes is getting better. It is just sad that these good things were wrapped in a load of crap. Teenagers and 20 somethings, no these are not the best years of your life, keep hanging on, time does make some things better and aging is a gift!

My aunt had the same thing, her hair started going white when she was a teen. She just had an excuse to start dying it earlier x3

my mom was so ashamed of her white hair for so long. she got her first gray hair at 16, and by her mid 20s she was fully grey. she dyed her hair for 10-15 years, and then she slowly started to dye her hair closer and closer to white and eventually she just stopped dying it. she was so ashamed of it that she hated people mentioning it or anything like that. My dad started calling her "his silver haired beauty" and would tell her it didnt matter what she looked like and that he loved her, and eventually she got to the point where she loves her grey hair and regrets that she ever dyed it. she is so beautiful and im so proud of her for actually liking that part of herself now.

No denial, you deserve all the success after so much effort and I'm so happy and proud of seeing all this grow^^ Ah yes, I remember when Stacy advised Safiya Nygaard she was already way more chilled and more open to everyone's personal styles and I remember she mentioned that she didn't felt the same as the one shows from back then and how she really didn't like how fashion tries to make people into fruit shapes ahahah ^^. I think it is a good example of how people can change, learn, and by knowing themselves a lot more, they become a lot more open to the rest of the world's different tastes.

I really enjoyed your reaction to the WNTW episode, and thought you had some interesting and insightful comments about fashion, the industry, and about how to treat people both in general, and for those who are searching for their sense of self through fashion. This follow-up to it is great as well. I appreciate how much Stacy London has changed, and I appreciate how you're so happy to celebrate the positive change after giving such a (deservedly) negative review before. Unfortunately, a lot of people are far too happy ripping people up with criticism, and ignoring anything else. I love her personal growth, from what I'm seeing. I've always been that 'alternative' dresser, the person who wore blue socks and a pink dress, and I actually loved watching What Not to Wear as a kid. But I wouldn't take their advice so much as I would just love to see the outcome.......
That just because you're considered by some unhappy people to be frumpy or "ugly" doesn't mean you are. That means they feel frumpy ugly on the inside when they see someone living their life differently, more happily, than others. I've always known myself and my style reflected me knowing who I am. Always.

Speaking of the algorithm, I was recommended the one with “bad stylists are bad” in the thumbnail. I’m a hairstylist so at first I assumed it was about hair, but I do know that fashion stylists are a thing. I stayed even though it wasn’t about what I originally thought, because your content was so interesting. I think a lot of people have watched WNTW and said WTF why are they doing this?!? Also, side note, I worked for Trade Secret salons when Nick Arrojo launched his line, and I met him in a product knowledge class. (He’s the first hairstylist from WNTW) That was pretty cool, but I wasn’t crazy about his line. Ok tangent over, Just thought I’d share how I found your channel. Ok I’m gonna go subscribe now. It does not surprise me that your subscribers have doubled. I loved the way you encouraged the self expression in wardrobe while not bashing the hosts. It speaks of you maturity and kindness. I watched your video about you reacting to Alexa's Lolita style on WNTW. I have been a fan of Lolita for a while but I would not know what pieces to buy to start. I have found myself more drawn to the 1950's housewife look, with long flowered dress and I just got a spring straw hat to wear with my dresses. My grandmother almost always wore a hat to church and she had many beautiful hats and dresses. My grandmother passed 2 years ago and I want to dress in that style of the 50's to honor her. She always had a big breakfast when we slept overnight and they had a big garden that we could pick the vegtables we were going to have for lunch just minutes after they had been picked. Thank you for your videos I have enjoyed watching the two I have just seen and look forward to watch more of your content. I am a new subscriber.

Hi have always loved Stacey and wntw, and I did watch your vid of the Lolita makeover and I loved your reaction to the show and the hosts. You’re so right about them not always listening enough to the guest and really just bullying them into dressing to more mainstream taste. I feel like if you watch multiple seasons of wntw you get a better sense of Stacey and Clinton actually caring about helping people, but it’s so nice to see Stacey speaking out against the way the show forced people to give up their personal preferences in favor of a bland generic mall shopping type style.

I love that Stacy London has changed her attitude and style! As a woman in my 40s, it warms my heart to see this TV host I looked up to back in the day grow into someone I can respect now. "What Not To Wear" deserves plenty of criticism, to be sure, but what I think has been left out of the discussion is that the early 2000s were a weird time for fashion. Many offices still had dress codes, and "business casual" was a relatively new concept. The change from the polished looks of the 80s to the grunge of the 90s had left many people with style whiplash :-) Many of the guests on the show were either dressing in clothes from a previous decade (and not in an interesting, put-together vintage way) or in clothes that were far too sloppy for the job or lifestyle they wanted. That doesn't excuse bullying people dressed in counterculture fashion, of course, but it might explain where the hosts were coming from. (Personally, I fell out of love with the show when they made fun of a young woman who loved LARPing and Renaissance fairs. Only the makeup artist was sympathetic and created a "fairy princess" look for her.)

In fact depending on how I pair them and what accessories I wear many of my clothes can crossover into the other parts of my style. I have loved dress vests for a long time and more adult clothes; even though I still do I have another more cute geeky nerd girl style I like to wear. Along with subtle steam punk in my everyday outfits! Plus my little clothes. Lol.
