He had an entertaining character and at the moment that is extremely rare in current WWE. Wrestlers who can put on great matches but can’t talk on the mic makes for a boring homogeneous product.

The Last Man Standing match between John Cena vs Umaga was all but Cena “Smoking” Umaga. Umaga came in looking good and arguably came out looking better.
I haven’t watched the match, but just looking at the still shots that Brian showed, yeah Cena did not beat Umaga easily. Hell, Cena having to choke Umaga in order to win shows just how hard the match was.
I quit watching wrestling on a regular basis in 2010. The reason is because the Nexus storyline had so much potential and was botched so horribly. John Cena was a big part of this...
WWE completely fucked that up. Nexus was fresh & captivating. Their merch even sold well. And, they just had to have Cena go over the entire faction within two months.

That same night, Vinny Mac tells Rey that Cena wanted his rematch. This was IMMEDIATELY after Rey already had a hell of a match. That is SUCH a heel move! So Cena wins (lol), and Rey never even sniffed the WWE championship afterward.

Its that Cena has a big ego, Nexus were meant to go over at Summerslam and Cena flat out refused and buried them alive. Then there was Alex Riley, who was buried because he stepped up against Cena. In his prime refused to put over ANYONE, from 2006 to 2010 he rarely lossed clean.
I remember when Raw had that tournament to crown a new WWE champion back in 2011. Then the winner had to face John Cena that night, which pretty much told us fans that Cena was leaving Raw with the belt. Rey Mysterio won the tournament, then sure enough, lost the belt to Cena shortly after. I believe that was most likely crap booking though (I wondered why Cena wasn’t in the tournament in the first place, and why does he get to challenge for the belt after Rey had already wrestled that night) but it seemed to put a damper on Rey’s big night of winning the tournament and title.

Another obscure honorable mention is Tyler Reks who was repackaged as a monster and had a very short dominant run until (reportedly) he was told to stop using the (WWE reinterpretation of the) Burning Hammer as his finisher because it was similar to (and looked miles better than) Attitude Adjustment. Then he was rapidly buried in lower midcard before a couple of weird backstage episodes led him to walk away from the company altogether.
If I recall correctly, Corbin got buried because he couldn't keep his mouth shut on social media. It was Vince who punished him or someone else in the higher ups. At this point, Cena was just an executioner. If it wasn't Cena, it would have been someone else, but Corbin was getting punished no matter what.
The actual reason was Corbin speaking out against a doctor who was downplaying the effects of concussions, the guy is an ex NFL player so knows all about the effects of CTE so didn't take kindly to a doctor spreading misinformation. Corbin was seen as being out of line for interrupting the doctor so was buried on wwe tv.

To his credit, he did put over CM Punk repeatedly, he put over Dolph Ziggler and elevated AJ at the same time, he put over Daniel Bryan, he was destroyed by Brock Lesnar, he lost the WWE title to Bray Wyatt, he put over Seth Rollins when he lost the US title to him and he also put over Roman Reigns big time. He also put over Alberto Del Río a couple of times and Del Rio only has good words about Cena these days. I think this has always happened with every mega star. Bruno Sanmartino, Billy Graham, Hulk Hogan, Brett Hart, Stone Cold, The Rock, Triple H, Cena, Batista, Orton, Goldberg...they were all overprotective of their pushes and they all buried people along the way.
It doesn't really change the fact he decided to fuck over a ton of people. The Nexus thing was even mentioned to have been HIS call and that everyone else was against it.

Calling Umaga a Cena victim feels like a stretch. Just being the chosen guy for the Trump feud was huge and the only reason he endend up leaving was all to do with his personal struggles. It's really hard to say the loss to Cena hurt him that much in even the medium term. Sandow being 1-12 before the Cena match is very telling as well. And it's weird that Bray is #2 when Dykstra and Riley are honorable mentions. Nexus was always going to be number 1 ahah.

John Cena made WWE unwatchable for period of 6-7 years. And it directly followed the HHH reign of terror. He was just EVERYWHERE and it suffocated a lot of talent.

I'll never understand what possessed Cena to think that him--a seasoned veteran who'd become a part-timer 6 years later going over a group of young talent that could've had a bright future was a good thing. While I agree with & won't deny some of these like Rusev & the Nexus but 1.) when It comes to guys like Renee Dupree, Kenny Dykstra, Damien Sandow etc. Do you seriously think these guys could've went any further than the midcard even if they did get over on Cena?? 2.) Based of what Brian is say a lot of these like Zack Ryder, Bray Wyatt & Umaga seem like more of the fault of Creative not knowing what do to rather than losing to Cena
1.) Not everybody can be a main eventer, but a win over Cena at those points could've done them better. Sandow in particular was quite over and had a big chance, as for Dykstra it could've made a good storyline, a bitter young talent taking revenge on his years of mistreatment stuck on that Spirit Squad gimmick, and so on. 2.) Yes and no, both are correlated. One thing is losing to somebody looking strong, other is losing to John Cena.
Jinder Mahal got the world heavyweight title in a company that Damien sandow got Mizdow over with and sandow was a far better gimmick promo and character then baron Corbin so yes I do think shadow would be a top heel if they wouldve gave him 1 run with the title
Daveyboy11 getting a win over the top guy at the right time and the right storyline works wonders even better if you can wrestle and hold your own if given the shot too, CM Puni was ready for the spot and when his time came he rolled with it. Just determines if they could hang. Which if given more experience, they could’ve potentially been big.
I'm surprised Riley only got an honorable mention. I know wrestlers beef with each other all the time, but no one backstage, including Riley himself, had any idea why Cena didn't like him, but he paid the price for it anyway
Looking back at it now, it’s scary to hear you talk about wrestling Goldberg in Saudia Arabia hurting Cena’s legacy during the Bray segment, when that literally just happened to Wyatt himself.
Looking back at this from the future in 2022, it's good to see Zach Ryder/Matt Cardona has had a career resurgence and is doing some awesome stuff on the indies and other places away from WWE.
Re: the Umaga/Joe comparison, I think the rumor was that Joe went to TNA because during his talks w/ WWE they were gonna book him as a stereotypical savage a la what we eventually got with Umaga. Also, I’d probably put somebody like Kevin Owens over Umaga. I’ve never understood what people were expecting out of Umaga. He was a one note monster heel who had steamrolled the whole roster, and unlike someone like Brock wasn’t a big draw in and of itself. There would’ve been nowhere else for him to go if he beat Cena. Meanwhile, John was the bigger star, but less than a year from it being stressed that he wasn’t on par with the HHH’s, etc, he still needed wins to establish himself. And he made Umaga look like a beast a Rumble 07. Cena winning is a no brainer if you ask me. With Owens in 14 though, Owens actually had a buzz coming from the indies and NXT, and by this point Cena was the establishment rather than the budding franchise. The first win by Owens was huge, but they negated it by letting Cena get his win back with two successive rematches. These completely killed his momentum, and he never really regained that buzz.
As someone who started watching during Cena's first reign of terror all of these hurt. Even as a child I knew Cena won too much. Nobody should win more matches than Undertaker.

I quit watching wrestling on a regular basis in 2010. The reason is because the Nexus storyline had so much potential and was botched so horribly. John Cena was a big part of this...

That same night, Vinny Mac tells Rey that Cena wanted his rematch. This was IMMEDIATELY after Rey already had a hell of a match. That is SUCH a heel move! So Cena wins (lol), and Rey never even sniffed the WWE championship afterward.

I remember when Raw had that tournament to crown a new WWE champion back in 2011. Then the winner had to face John Cena that night, which pretty much told us fans that Cena was leaving Raw with the belt. Rey Mysterio won the tournament, then sure enough, lost the belt to Cena shortly after. I believe that was most likely crap booking though (I wondered why Cena wasn’t in the tournament in the first place, and why does he get to challenge for the belt after Rey had already wrestled that night) but it seemed to put a damper on Rey’s big night of winning the tournament and title.

For those curious, today's video was not meant to be framed as explicitly anti-Cena, or a condemnation of his run on top, or an attack on backstage politics. It was just meant to be a list of folks who had the biggest falls from grace after feuding with him. Not trying to place blame here, in fact I actually like most of Cena's work. Another obscure honorable mention is Tyler Reks who was repackaged as a monster and had a very short dominant run until (reportedly) he was told to stop using the (WWE reinterpretation of the) Burning Hammer as his finisher because it was similar to (and looked miles better than) Attitude Adjustment. Then he was rapidly buried in lower midcard before a couple of weird backstage episodes led him to walk away from the company altogether.

If I recall correctly, Corbin got buried because he couldn't keep his mouth shut on social media. It was Vince who punished him or someone else in the higher ups. At this point, Cena was just an executioner. If it wasn't Cena, it would have been someone else, but Corbin was getting punished no matter what.
The actual reason was Corbin speaking out against a doctor who was downplaying the effects of concussions, the guy is an ex NFL player so knows all about the effects of CTE so didn't take kindly to a doctor spreading misinformation.
Corbin was seen as being out of line for interrupting the doctor so was buried on wwe tv.
How was Punk not on the list. His entire time as WWE champion, he played second fiddle to Cena’s antics in 2012.

To his credit, he did put over CM Punk repeatedly, he put over Dolph Ziggler and elevated AJ at the same time, he put over Daniel Bryan, he was destroyed by Brock Lesnar, he lost the WWE title to Bray Wyatt, he put over Seth Rollins when he lost the US title to him and he also put over Roman Reigns big time. He also put over Alberto Del Río a couple of times and Del Rio only has good words about Cena these days.
I think this has always happened with every mega star. Bruno Sanmartino, Billy Graham, Hulk Hogan, Brett Hart, Stone Cold, The Rock, Triple H, Cena, Batista, Orton, Goldberg...they were all overprotective of their pushes and they all buried people along the way.
It doesn't really change the fact he decided to fuck over a ton of people. The Nexus thing was even mentioned to have been HIS call and that everyone else was against it.
He should’ve put Wade Barrett over. Barrett should’ve been the one to be pushed to the moon those next few years.

Calling Umaga a Cena victim feels like a stretch. Just being the chosen guy for the Trump feud was huge and the only reason he endend up leaving was all to do with his personal struggles. It's really hard to say the loss to Cena hurt him that much in even the medium term.
Sandow being 1-12 before the Cena match is very telling as well. And it's weird that Bray is #2 when Dykstra and Riley are honorable mentions. Nexus was always going to be number 1 ahah.

John Cena made WWE unwatchable for period of 6-7 years. And it directly followed the HHH reign of terror. He was just EVERYWHERE and it suffocated a lot of talent.

1.) when It comes to guys like Renee Dupree, Kenny Dykstra, Damien Sandow etc. Do you seriously think these guys could've went any further than the midcard even if they did get over on Cena??
2.) Based of what Brian is say a lot of these like Zack Ryder, Bray Wyatt & Umaga seem like more of the fault of Creative not knowing what do to rather than losing to Cena

1.) Not everybody can be a main eventer, but a win over Cena at those points could've done them better. Sandow in particular was quite over and had a big chance, as for Dykstra it could've made a good storyline, a bitter young talent taking revenge on his years of mistreatment stuck on that Spirit Squad gimmick, and so on.
2.) Yes and no, both are correlated. One thing is losing to somebody looking strong, other is losing to John Cena.
Jinder Mahal got the world heavyweight title in a company that Damien sandow got Mizdow over with and sandow was a far better gimmick promo and character then baron Corbin so yes I do think shadow would be a top heel if they wouldve gave him 1 run with the title

Looking back at it now, it’s scary to hear you talk about wrestling Goldberg in Saudia Arabia hurting Cena’s legacy during the Bray segment, when that literally just happened to Wyatt himself.
Looking back at this from the future in 2022, it's good to see Zach Ryder/Matt Cardona has had a career resurgence and is doing some awesome stuff on the indies and other places away from WWE.

Re: the Umaga/Joe comparison, I think the rumor was that Joe went to TNA because during his talks w/ WWE they were gonna book him as a stereotypical savage a la what we eventually got with Umaga.
Also, I’d probably put somebody like Kevin Owens over Umaga. I’ve never understood what people were expecting out of Umaga. He was a one note monster heel who had steamrolled the whole roster, and unlike someone like Brock wasn’t a big draw in and of itself. There would’ve been nowhere else for him to go if he beat Cena. Meanwhile, John was the bigger star, but less than a year from it being stressed that he wasn’t on par with the HHH’s, etc, he still needed wins to establish himself. And he made Umaga look like a beast a Rumble 07. Cena winning is a no brainer if you ask me.
With Owens in 14 though, Owens actually had a buzz coming from the indies and NXT, and by this point Cena was the establishment rather than the budding franchise. The first win by Owens was huge, but they negated it by letting Cena get his win back with two successive rematches. These completely killed his momentum, and he never really regained that buzz.
God, I feel bad for Alex Riley. He was pretty good and had a catchy theme.
As I started to get back into wwe in early to mid 09, Cena beating Nexus is still probably the most upset I've ever been about a Cena win.
As someone who started watching during Cena's first reign of terror all of these hurt. Even as a child I knew Cena won too much. Nobody should win more matches than Undertaker.
Let's just be glad Umaga was the person who suggested Rikishi to bring his two sons into WWE Being the Uso's
