    Damn Brian you nailed it all with one line “small guys have to prove they can get over and big guys have to prove they can’t” it’s 1000% true in WWE.

    • @fattiger6957
      @fattiger6957 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That's why I naturally like the smaller wrestlers way more than the big guys. I know that if a wrestler isn't 6'5" 240lbs, he probably had to work his ass off to get there. It might not be fair, but I assume every big guy just got hired because of Vince's big man fetish.

    • @Torthrodhel
      @Torthrodhel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@fattiger6957 that's especially unfortunate (if completely understandable) because it's so much more difficult to do exactly the same stuff when you're even just a little bit heavier, never mind a lot. But Vince never seemed to understand that's not an excuse for mixing world class with no class and calling them the same. Ends up underrating the big wrestlers who can actually move in the eyes of the fans, just because they aren't doing flips to the outside. You throw a Khali in here and a Mabel in there and their inconsistency and hazard level... makes the next superheavy to come along seem like trash even if they aren't since the push is the same so you expect the same. I'm 330lbs myself. I have a reasonable cross body press and standing dropkick, takes a hell of an effort. It probably wouldn't quite be enough for WWE fans just because they've been fed this diet of overrated superheavies. I'd probably be seen the same way (and at my current standard I'd BE the same way but I would hope not to be put on TV until my standard was on par... but that's the problem, isn't it?). The smaller wrestler isn't allowed to be the big deal, and the bigger wrestler isn't allowed to be the appreciated worker. Either way whoever you are you're losing out on something. Really a rotten status quo they've cultivated whichever way you slice it.
      I like basic giant type moves, too! Quite old school tastes in that way. But that doesn't mean they can't be done sloppily and sadly that's what you usually see.
      I was still a fan of Mabel for that spinning wheel kick he did. Even though he botched it probably more than half the time. When he hit it well... just to appreciate the sheer power necessary to move 480lbs off the mat in that fashion. Why was that not his finisher? Plus, much less danger of injury than the hip drop. He shouldn't have been doing the hip drop if he was injuring people with it. If you can't do a move safely against a sandbag, don't do it at all. Good rule of thumb.

    • @fattiger6957
      @fattiger6957 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Torthrodhel If you're a big guy and you can do more than the standard WWE bodybuilder type, or tall guy or big fat guy worker, fantastic. You have my respect.
      I recently got back into watching wresting through AEW and I am blown away by the ring work. They all seem to be hired based off skill. There's even a few big guys who really impressed me.
      There's a very good chance my big guy prejudice is based off of slow, lumbering giants that dominated WWE and WCW's main event scene. I watched workers like Bret, Jericho, Daniel Bryan work their asses off to get where they are while big men like Nash, Big Show and Reigns got hotshotted to the top just based off their look.
      I'm probably going to look into Japanese wrestling now too since I've broken out of WWE's bubble.

    The best part of the Lex/Yokozuna match was that during the entire celebration for Lex's count-out victory, Bobby Heenan literally called out the stupidity of it all. Vince McMahon would cheer alongside everyone, touting how Lex managed to beat the odds, only for Heenan to constantly retort with "Why is everyone going crazy over this? HE DIDN'T WIN THE TITLE!!!!!". It's the kind of call you'd never hear nowadays, since Vince is in everyone's ear, and I love it.

    Vader vs Shawn Michaels - summer slam 96. Go listen to Jim Cornettes review from a few weeks back. He cleared it up well why this was bad.
    Sabu vs Big Show - Summerslam 2006. 😐..... moving on
    Bret Hart vs Doink - Summerslam 93. Lugers main event was much better than the earlier mess that was Bret vs Lawler which became Bret vs Doink with Lawler involved. This was 1 of the many matches Bret had during the mid 90’s that imo made him look bad.
    Honorable mention to a segment that took place at Summerslam 97 I believe where they ran a million dollar contest for months in wwf magazine to get a chance at the big prize. In the end it took up several minutes of the show for everyone to try to open a coffin of money but everyone picked the wrong key. Sable who was there for everyone to look at eventually grabbed the right key and opened the coffin to show everyone the money Vince would get to keep. Good thing too cause he would need it for mike Tyson in the coming months

    I have to disagree on the part about Sapphire. I can see how with the way people think about things today you can view it that way. But at the time the fact she was black was irrelevant. That wasn't the focus. She was for lack of a better term the every fan. She represented the audience and viewers at home. Blue collar, good morals, and passionate about Wrestling that was a reward for a hard weeks work. The one fan who got to step onto the other side of the blue barricade and be a part of it, which deep down in our heart of hearts is every Wrestling fans dream.
    So to see her become corrupted and betray not just Dusty but the fans was shocking and devastating. It would be like playing a Legend of Zelda game and in the middle Link becomes the villain and joins Ganon. You'd just stop and go "No way that just happened!" And that's what those of us watching at the time all said. Personally I think reading anything more into it is missing the point and anachronistic, but as stated I get why people would look at it that way.

    • @DaDitka
      @DaDitka 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      On several occasions, I have told people that the reason for the existence of some characters is because that character represents us?
      If you are a fan of the Three Stooges, for instance, Larry was the "everyman" of the group. You could kind of imagine yourself in one of their skits by putting yourself in Larry's spot.
      If you were a fan of The Transformers from the 1980s cartoon, Spike would have been the "everyman." If you were a young teen like me watching that show, you would have imagine yourself going on adventures with Optimus and the others through Spike (of course, no one asks why a young kid is going on dangerous missions with robotic warriors, but it was a 1980s cartoon, so there's that).
      I'm sure you could come up with hother examples, but Sapphire was definitely an example of what you are talking about. The common person getting to manage and even wrestle with a superstar like Dusty Rhodes was basically her. And for her to sell out to DiBiase was, on many levels, pretty crushing. How could the ordinary person like her do that with such an evil man?
      I like that take of yours. Thanks for sharing this.

      Some folk could have broken through. Justin Gabriel could have been a star.
      Sheffield was over as hell as Ryback until booking derailed him.
      Barrett as you mentioned would have broken through.
      Slater did have a solid career as a comedy act. But whose to say he couldn't have channelled that charisma into a serious face run. Main event? Probably not but a solid upper midcarder? I can see that.
      Tarver, Otunga and Young wouldn't have made it. But we still had the potential for 4 stars on various points of the card. Instead we got nothing unless you want to count former member Bryan who had no connection after summerslam.
      To make it worse this came during a period of creative stagnation where no new stars broke through and the matches in the main event were repetitive as hell and WWE were relying on guys like Bret Hart in the midcard. The Nexus looked like WWE were changing their ways and this killed all that hope in fans.
