Just for little context, if football had been viewed that way all along, Maradona, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Best, R9 and Zizou would have absolutely no business being great players. Cr7 was ahead of Messi before 2009. But since then, although he came closer to Messi at times, there was never really any question about who was the greatest to any honest football watcher.
This video has many flaws in it, and I'll explain:
First, it describes the debate as closed where it has been decided that Messi is the goat of football, which is far from being true. Such a strong debate about the most popular sport on the planet is likely to never be concluded, unlike other sports, for example - basketball with Michael Jordan. .
Secondly, my other problem with this video is the reasons the author decided that Messi was the goat by: Team & Personal titles. I will start with the latter: On personal titles, there are dozens of videos that discuss that Messi (and also Ronaldo, by the way) did not deserve all of Ballon D'Ors he won. For example, the 2010 (Sjneider, trebel with Inter and a WC finalist),2019 (Lewandowski Champions league winner and top scorer) and 2023 (Haaland, trebel winner and a top score) could easily argued to be denied. Ronaldo, on the other hand, has only one case (2013, Ribery, trebel winner) but also has the case to claim that he should've won the 2018 one (vs. Modric). To conclude, personal titles are far from being justified as GOAT indicators on Messi's case. Unlike Ronaldo's.
Now to team achievements: This is actually a much longer debate, as the careers of Ronaldo and Messi are not compared in the right way, as those ignore the challenges that the two of those phased, which are completely different. I will be gentle by saying that Messi was grown into one of the best teams in club history, while Ronaldo was grown into dominating the best league in the world as the main player. Moreover, Messi never truly faces a real challenge, unlike Ronaldo, who dominated the top 3 toughest leagues and won titles in all, Messi failed in the French league(!). His career challenges were by far smaller than Ronaldo's and yet, he performed much less on the club level than Cristiano. When Messi did not have Xaxi and Iniesta, his team lost 8-2 to Bayern, and kept dropping the ball against Liverpool and Rome in Ramontadas. Come on people.
Finally, and my favorite topic, is the international "success". Yes, winning the world cup is amazing. But out of 9 games, Argentina got 7(!) penalties. There was not an ever tournament where the entire world wanted one team to win so badly like the one in Qatar. Additionally, we need to remember that Messi plays in...Argentina! It is a top 5 all-time countries in the world! That fact that it took him 5 finals to win a trophy against Peru and Columbia, is almost a disgrace. Who did Ronaldo have to compete against? European countries! Enough said.
