I'm from Asia. Having to spend my childhood quite entirely based around this lore and story. Watching, playing and experiencing all this is what my childhood considers as heaven for sure!

As an Asian my uncle always told me this Journey to The West story everytime we have a chance, he always into fantasy novel and love every mythology story. I always follow Wukong story in every media like in TV Series, Movies, and Comics. But now finally playing it its so nostalgic.

The monkey we play as a player is the next generation of new Monkey King to meet real Wukong who got trapped by Erlang Shen. In the game we also get some flashbacks scene of Journey to The West important event when Monk help Wukong and meet his crew.
You remember the tight hoop that appeared on Wukong's head in the prologue, right? In the novel, the tight hoop disappeared after Sun Wukong became a Buddha, but in the game it's ostensibly disappeared while it actually still exists, and Sun Wukong directed his own death in order to truly get rid of this tight hoop to gain his freedom, and even though he's dead, the six roots are still there, and as long as a Heavenly Ordained Person has taken all six of them, he'll be the Sun Wukong again, including reacquiring his consciousness, but the difference is that this new Monkey King is the Monkey King without the tight hoop. So once you hit this ending it's a real success, while the other failed ending is that the Heavenly Ordained Man ends up with the tight hoop again, thus starting another cycle of reincarnation.

Because this is just a test. Erlang is as powerful as Wukong, they can't defeat each other in the lore one on one. Erlang here (in the game) is just to test Destined One, he's not really for winning. Even if Destined One stab him in the end, he still can't die. He's just a bit tired after the fight, we can see him stand up and talk afterward like nothing ever happened. 🙂

Plus, the Four Heavenly Kings are big deals, they are the protectors of heaven and the four cardinal directions, so the true boss battle wouldn't have been so... short, and the build up was poor.
Close Wukong was challenged by Buddha to jump out of his hand if he did he would win take over the heavens and be the next Buddha (I think I'm a little off) so Wukong jumped to the edge of the universe in a single jump made a x and peed because he could expect he never left Buddha's had so losing the bet he was punished for causing trouble in the heavens by being sealed under a mountain (I forgot the name) for 500 years until journey to the west where he was freed

The 4 heaven kings have their own origin story in a different novel Fengshen. I like it that the game preserved their holy artifacts and their power faithful. Though they didn't show the special ability of the sword which is a windstorm full of blades.
